Algebraic topological methods have been used successfully in concurrency theory, the domain of theoretical computer science that deals with distributed computing. L. Fajstrup, E. Goubault, and M. Raussen have introduced partially ordered spaces (pospaces) as a model for concurrent systems. In this paper it is shown that the category of pospaces under a fixed pospace is both a fibration and a cofibration category in the sense of H. Baues. The homotopy notion in this fibration and cofibration category is relative directed homotopy. It is also shown that the category of pospaces is a closed model category such that the homotopy notion is directed homotopy.

We study topological spaces with a distinguished set of paths, called directed paths. Since these directed paths are generally not reversible, the directed homotopy classes of directed paths do not assemble into a groupoid, and there is no direct analog of the fundamental group. However, they do assemble into a category, called the fundamental category. We define models of the fundamental category, such as the fundamental bipartite graph, and minimal extremal models which are shown to generalize the fundamental group. In addition, we prove van Kampen theorems for subcategories, retracts, and m…
Combinatorially and stochastically defined simplicial complexes often have the homotopy type of a wedge of spheres. A prominent conjecture of Kahle quantifies this precisely for the case of random flag complexes. We explore whether such properties might extend to graphs arising from nature. We consider the brain network (as reconstructed by Varshney & al.) of the Caenorhabditis elegans nematode, an important model organism in biology. Using an iterative computational procedure based on elementary methods of algebraic topology, namely homology, simplicial collapses and coning operations, we sho…
In a previous paper [21] the author studied the homotopy lifting property in the category dTop of directed spaces in the sense of M. Grandis [12], [13], [14]. The present paper, which is a continuation of aforementioned article, introduces and studies the directed weak homotopy property (dWCHP) and directed weak fibrations, extending to the category dTop the well known Dold's (or weak) - fibrations [6]. The dWCHP is characterized in several ways. Then the notion of a directed fibre homotopy equivalence (dFHE) between directed weak fibrations is studied. Some examples and counterexamples are gi…
The notion of a homotopy flow on a directed space was introduced in \cite{Raussen:07} as a coherent tool for comparing spaces of directed paths between pairs of points in that space with each other. If all parameter directed maps preserve the homotopy type of path spaces, such a flow (and these parameter maps) are called inessential. For a directed space, one may consider various categories whose objects are pairs of reachable points and whose morphisms may be induced by these inessential d-maps. Localization with respect to subcategories with these inessential d-maps as morphisms can be combi…
In this paper we show that both the homotopy category of strict $n$-categories, $1\leqslant n \leqslant \infty$, and the homotopy category of Steiner's augmented directed complexes are equivalent to the category of homotopy types. In order to do so, we first prove an abstract result, based on a strategy of Fritsch and Latch, giving sufficient conditions for a nerve functor with values in simplicial sets to induce an equivalence at the level of homotopy categories. We then apply this result to strict $n$-categories and augmented directed complexes, for which the hypothesis of our theorem were e…
Directed Algebraic Topology is beginning to emerge from various applications. The basic structure we shall use for such a theory, a 'd-space', is a topological space equipped with a family of 'directed paths', closed under some operations. This allows for 'directed homotopies', generally non reversible, represented by a cylinder and cocylinder functors. The existence of 'pastings' (colimits) yields a geometric realisation of cubical sets as d-spaces, together with homotopy constructs which will be developed in a sequel. Here, the 'fundamental category' of a d-space is introduced and a 'Seifert…
The main goal of this paper is to prove that the space of directed loops on the final precubical set is homotopy equivalent to the "total" configuration space of points on the plane; by "total" we mean that any finite number of points in a configuration is allowed. We also provide several applications: we define new invariants of precubical sets, prove that directed path spaces on any precubical complex have the homotopy types of CW-complexes and construct certain presentations of configuration spaces of points on the plane as nerves of categories.
We prove that the loop space of the directed suspension of a directed space is homotopy equivalent to the James construction. In particular, it does not depend on the directed structure of a given directed space.
We describe various path homology theories constructed for a directed hypergraph. We introduce the category of directed hypergraphs and the notion of a homotopy in this category. Also, we investigate the functoriality and the homotopy invariance of the introduced path homology groups. We provide examples of computation of these homology groups.
For a given pre-cubical set ($\square$--set) $K$ with two distinguished vertices $\bO$, $\bI$, we prove that the space $\vP(K)_\bO^\bI$ of d-paths on the geometric realization of $K$ with source $\bO$ and target $\bI$ is homotopy equivalent to its subspace $\vP^t(K)_\bO^\bI$ of tame d-paths. When $K$ is the underlying $\square$--set of a Higher Dimensional Automaton $A$, tame d-paths on $K$ represent step executions of $A$. Then, we define the cube chain category of $K$ and prove that its nerve is weakly homotopy equivalent to $\vP(K)_\bO^\bI$.
In a previous paper [22] the author studied the directed weak covering homotopy property (dWCHP)and directed weak fibrations in the category dTop of directed spaces in the sense of M. Grandis [12], [13], [14]. This type of maps extend to the category dTop the well known Dold's (or weak)fibrations [6]. In this paper the transition from local to global of the dFHE (directed fiber homotopy equivalence) and the dWCHP are studied by proving two Dold type theorems and respectively a tom Dieck-Kamps-Puppe type theorem [3]. Some new notions of directed topology are defined: d-halo, d-SEP, d-numerable …
A multipath in a directed graph is a disjoint union of paths. The multipath complex of a directed graph ${\tt G}$ is the simplicial complex whose faces are the multipaths of ${\tt G}$. We compute the Euler characteristic, and associated generating function, of the multipath complex for some families of graphs, including transitive tournaments and complete bipartite graphs. Then, we compute the homotopy type of multipath complexes of linear graphs, polygons, small grids and transitive tournaments. We show that they are all contractible or wedges of spheres. We introduce a new technique for deco…
We construct a q-model structure, a h-model structure and a m-model structure on multipointed $d$-spaces and on flows. The two q-model structures are combinatorial and coincide with the combinatorial model structures already known on these categories. The four other model structures (the two m-model structures and the two h-model structures) are accessible. We give an example of multipointed $d$-space and of flow which are not cofibrant in any of the model structures. We explain why the m-model structures, Quillen equivalent to the q-model structure of the same category, are better behaved tha…
In this paper, we investigate the Quillen model structure defined by Bisson and Tsemo in the category of directed graphs Gph. In particular, we give a precise description of the homotopy category of graphs associated to this model structure. We endow the categories of N-sets and Z-sets with related model structures, and show that their homotopy categories are Quillen equivalent to the homotopy category Ho(Gph). This enables us to show that Ho(Gph) is equivalent to the category cZSet of periodic Z-sets, and to show that two finite directed graphs are almost-isospectral if and only if they are h…
Let $K$ be an arbitrary semi-cubical set that can be embedded in a standard cube. Using Discrete Morse Theory, we construct a CW-complex that is homotopy equivalent to the space $\vec{P}(K)_v^w$ of directed paths between two given vertices $v,w$ of $K$. In many cases, this construction is minimal: the cells of the constructed CW-complex are in 1--1 correspondence with the generators of the homology of $\vec{P}(K)_v^w$.
In this paper, we introduce the notions of stable future, past and total component systems on a directed space with no loops. Then, we associate the stable component category to a stable (future, past or total) component system. Stable component categories are enriched in some monoidal category, eg. the homotopy category of spaces, and carry information about the spaces of directed paths between particular points. It is shown that the geometric realizations of finite pre-cubical sets with no loops admit the unique minimal stable (future/past/total) component systems. These constructions provid…
This paper starts with an observation that two infinite series of simplicial complexes, which a priori do not seem to have anything to do with each other, have the same homotopy type. One series consists of the complexes of directed forests on a double directed string, while the other one consists of Shapiro-Welker models for the spaces of hyperbolic polynomials with a triple root. We explain this coincidence in the more general context by finding an explicit homotopy equivalence between complexes of directed forests on a double directed tree, and doubly disconnecting complexes of a tree.
The spaces of directed paths on the geometric realizations of pre-cubical sets, called also $\square$--sets, can be interpreted as the spaces of possible executions of Higher Dimensional Automata, which are models for concurrent computations. In this paper we construct, for a sufficiently good pre-cubical set $K$, a CW-complex $W(K)_v^w$ that is homotopy equivalent to the space of directed paths between given vertices $v$, $w$ of $K$. This construction is functorial with respect to $K$, and minimal among all functorial constructions. Furthermore, explicit formulas for incidence numbers of the …
We introduce the weighted path homology on the category of weigh\-ted directed hypergraphs and describe conditions of homotopy invariance of weighted path homology groups. We give several examples that explain the nontriviality of the introduced notions.
In this paper we study the homotopy type of the partially ordered set of left cosets of abelian subgroups in an extraspecial $p$-group. We prove that the universal cover of its nerve is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of $r$-spheres where $2r \geq 4$ is the rank of its Frattini quotient. This determines the homotopy type of the universal cover of the classifying space of transitionally commutative bundles.
Using the ordered analogue of Farley-Sabalka's discrete gradient field on the configuration space of a graph, we unravel a levelwise behavior of the generators of the pure braid group on a tree. This allows us to generalize Farber's equivariant description of the homotopy type of the configuration space on a tree on two particles. The results are applied to the calculation of all the higher topological complexities of ordered configuration spaces on trees on any number of particles.
In the directed setting, the spaces of directed paths between fixed initial and terminal points are the defining feature for distinguishing different directed spaces. The simplest case is when the space of directed paths is homotopy equivalent to that of a single path; we call this the trivial space of directed paths. Directed spaces that are topologically trivial may have non-trivial spaces of directed paths, which means that information is lost when the direction of these topological spaces is ignored. We define a notion of directed collapsibility in the setting of a directed Euclidean cubic…
We want to investigate 'spaces' where paths have a 'weight', or 'cost', expressing length, duration, price, energy, etc. The weight function is not assumed to be invariant up to path-reversion. Thus, 'weighted algebraic topology' can be developed as an enriched version of directed algebraic topology, where illicit paths are penalised with an infinite cost, and the licit ones are measured. Its algebraic counterpart will be 'weighted algebraic structures', equipped with a sort of directed seminorm. In the fundamental weighted category of a generalised metric space, introduced here, each homotopy…
By analogy with methods of Spivak, there is a realization functor which takes a persistence diagram $Y$ in simplicial sets to an extended pseudo-metric space (or ep-metric space) $Re(Y)$. The functor $Re$ has a right adjoint, called the singular functor, which takes an ep-metric space $Z$ to a persistence diagram $S(Z)$. We give an explicit description of $Re(Y)$, and show that it depends only on the $1$-skeleton $sk_{1}Y$ of $Y$. If $X$ is a totally ordered ep-metric space, then there is an isomorphism $Re(V_{\ast}(X)) \cong X$, between the realization of the Vietoris-Rips diagram $V_{\ast}(X…
For $X$ a connected finite simplicial complex we consider $Δ^d(X,n)$ the space of configurations of $n$ ordered points of $X$ such that no $d+1$ of them are equal, and $B^d(X,n)$ the analogous space of configurations of unordered points. These reduce to the standard configuration spaces of distinct points when $d=1$. We describe the homotopy groups of $Δ^d(X,n)$ (resp. $B^d(X,n)$) in terms of the homotopy (resp. homology) groups of $X$ through a range which is generally sharp. It is noteworthy that the fundamental group of the configuration space $B^d(X,n)$ abelianizes as soon as we allow poin…
We study the homotopy theory of locally ordered spaces, that is manifolds with boundary whose charts are partially ordered in a compatible way. Their category is not particularly well-behaved with respect to colimits. However, this category turns out to be a certain full subcategory of a topos of sheaves over a simpler site. A precise characterisation of this subcategory is provided. The ambient topos makes available some general homotopical machinery.
This paper concerns the study of the homotopy type of the ordered configuration space for manifolds with boundary and as an application we will study the collision free motion planning problem on manifolds with boundary.
For a closed PL manifold M, we consider the configuration space F(M,k) of ordered k-tuples of distinct points in M. We show that a suitable iterated suspension of F(M,k) is a homotopy invariant of M. The number of suspensions we require depends on three parameters: the number of points k, the dimension of M and the connectivity of M. Our proof uses a mixture of Poincare embedding theory and fiberwise algebraic topology.
We give combinatorial models for the homotopy type of complements of elliptic arrangements (i.e., certain sets of abelian subvarieties in a product of elliptic curves). We give a presentation of the fundamental group of such spaces and, as an application, we treat the case of ordered configuration spaces of elliptic curves. Our models are finite polyhedral CW complexes, and our combinatorial tools of choice are acyclic categories (small categories without loops). As a stepping stone, we give a characterization of which acyclic categories arise as face categories of polyhedral CW complexes.
Many categories have been used to model concurrency. Using any of these, the challenge is to reduce a given model to a smaller representation which nevertheless preserves the relevant computer-scientific information. That is, one wants to replace a given model with a simpler model with the same directed homotopy-type. Unfortunately, the obvious definition of directed homotopy equivalence is too coarse. This paper introduces the notion of context to refine this definition.
This paper constructs an h-model structure for diagrams of streams, locally preordered spaces. Along the way, the paper extends some classical characterizations of Hurewicz fibrations and closed Hurewicz cofibrations. The usual characterization of classical closed Hurewicz cofibrations as inclusions of neighborhood deformation retracts extends. A characterization of classical Hurewicz fibrations as algebras over a pointed Moore cocylinder endofunctor also extends. An immediate consequence is a long exact sequence for directed homotopy monoids, with applications to safety verifications for data…
For a smooth manifold A, we consider the ordered configuration space F_k(AxR) of k distinct points in AxR. We obtain an explicit homotopy construction of the configuration space F_k(AxR) and of the (k-2)-fold suspension of F_k(A). Under certain conditions, we then show that the homotopy types of these two spaces depend only on the homotopy type of A. ----- Pour une variete lisse A, on considere F_k(AxR) l'espace des configurations ordonnees de k particules distinctes dans AxR. On effectue une construction explicite de l'espace de configurations F_k(AxR) et de la suspension (k-2)-ieme de F_k(A)…
Koschorke introduced a map from the space of closed $n$-component links to the ordered configuration space of $n$-tuples of points in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and conjectured that this map separates homotopy links. The purpose of this paper is to construct an analogous map for string links, and to prove (1) this map in fact separates homotopy string links, and (2) Koschorke's original map factors through the map constructed here together with an analogue of Markov's closure map defined on the level of certain function spaces.
This text develops a homotopy theory of 2-categories analogous to Grothendieck's homotopy theory of categories developed in "Pursuing Stacks". We define the notion of "basic localizer of 2-Cat", 2-categorical generalization of Grothendieck's notion of basic localizer, and we show that the homotopy theories of $Cat$ and 2-$Cat$ are equivalent in a remarkably strong sense: there is an isomorphism, compatible with localization, between the ordered classes of basic localizers of $Cat$ and 2-$Cat$. It follows that weak homotopy equivalences in 2-$Cat$ can be characterised in an internal way, withou…
