In this paper we introduce the characteristic gluing problem for the Einstein vacuum equations. We present a codimension-$10$ gluing construction for characteristic initial data which are close to the Minkowski data and we show that the $10$-dimensional obstruction space consists of gauge-invariant charges which are conserved by the linearized null constraint equations. By relating these $10$ charges to the ADM energy, linear momentum, angular momentum and the center-of-mass we prove that asymptotically flat data can be characteristically glued (including the $10$ charges) to the data of a suitably chosen Kerr spacetime, obtaining as a corollary an alternative proof of the Corvino--Schoen spacelike gluing construction. Moreover, we derive a localized version of our construction where the given data restricted on an angular sector is characteristically glued to the Minkowski data restricted on another angular sector. As a corollary we obtain an alternative proof of the Carlotto-Schoen localized spacelike gluing construction. Our method yields no loss of decay in the transition region, resolving an open problem. We also discuss a number of other applications.
This is the second paper in a series of papers adressing the characteristic gluing problem for the Einstein vacuum equations. We solve the codimension-$10$ characteristic gluing problem for characteristic data which are close to the Minkowski data. We derive an infinite-dimensional space of gauge-dependent charges and a $10$-dimensional space of gauge-invariant charges that are conserved by the linearized null constraint equations and act as obstructions to the gluing problem. The gauge-dependent charges can be matched by applying angular and transversal gauge transformations of the characteri…
This is the third paper in a series of papers adressing the characteristic gluing problem for the Einstein vacuum equations. We provide full details of our characteristic gluing (including the $10$ charges) of strongly asymptotically flat data to the data of a suitably chosen Kerr spacetime. The choice of the Kerr spacetime crucially relies on relating the $10$ charges to the ADM energy, linear momentum, angular momentum and the center-of-mass. As a corollary, we obtain an alternative proof of the Corvino-Schoen spacelike gluing construction for strongly asymptotically flat spacelike initial d…
In this paper we develop a new approach to the gluing problem in General Relativity, that is, the problem of matching two solutions of the Einstein equations along a spacelike or characteristic (null) hypersurface. In contrast to the previous constructions, the new perspective actively utilizes the nonlinearity of the constraint equations. As a result, we are able to remove the $10$-dimensional spaces of obstructions to the null and spacelike (asymptotically flat) gluing problems, previously known in the literature. In particular, we show that any asymptotically flat spacelike initial data can…
We construct dynamical many-black-hole spacetimes with well-controlled asymptotic behavior as solutions of the Einstein vacuum equation with positive cosmological constant. We accomplish this by gluing Schwarzschild-de Sitter or Kerr-de Sitter black hole metrics into neighborhoods of points on the future conformal boundary of de Sitter space, under certain balance conditions on the black hole parameters. We give a self-contained treatment of solving the Einstein equation directly for the metric, given the scattering data we encounter at the future conformal boundary. The main step in the const…
We show that asymptotically hyperbolic solutions of the Einstein constraint equations with constant mean curvature can be glued in such a way that their asymptotic regions are connected.
We extend the conformal gluing construction of Isenberg-Mazzeo-Pollack [18] by establishing an analogous gluing result for field theories obtained by minimally coupling Einstein's gravitational theory with matter fields. We treat classical fields such as perfect fluids and the Yang-Mills equations as well as the Einstein-Vlasov system, which is an important example coming from kinetic theory. In carrying out these extensions, we extend the conformal gluing technique to higher dimensions and codify it in such a way as to make more transparent where it can, and can not, be applied. In particular…
We establish a general gluing theorem for constant mean curvature solutions of the vacuum Einstein constraint equations. This allows one to take connected sums of solutions or to glue a handle (wormhole) onto any given solution. Away from this handle region, the initial data sets we produce can be made as close as desired to the original initial data sets. These constructions can be made either when the initial manifold is compact or asymptotically Euclidean or asymptotically hyperbolic, with suitable corresponding conditions on the extrinsic curvature. In the compact setting a mild nondegener…
We develop a gluing construction which adds scaled and truncated asymptotically Euclidean solutions of the Einstein constraint equations to compact solutions with potentially non-trivial cosmological constants. The result is a one-parameter family of initial data which has ordinary and scaled "point-particle" limits analogous to those of Gralla and Wald ("A rigorous derivation of gravitational self-force," Class. Quantum Grav. 2008). In particular, we produce examples of initial data which generalize Schwarzschild - de Sitter initial data and gluing theorems of IMP-type.
We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of "conservation laws" on null hypersurfaces for the wave equation on general four-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds. Examples of null hypersurfaces exhibiting such conservation laws include the standard null cones of Minkowski spacetime and the degenerate horizons of extremal black holes. Another (limiting) example of such a conservation law is that which gives rise to the well-known Newman-Penrose constants along the null infinity of asymptotically flat spacetimes. The existence of such conservation laws can be viewed as an obstr…
We present a procedure for asymptotic gluing of hyperboloidal initial data sets that preserves the shear-free condition. Our construction is modeled on a previous gluing construction by the last three named authors, but with significant modifications that incorporate the shear-free condition. We rely on the special Hölder spaces, and the corresponding theory for elliptic operators on weakly asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds, introduced by the authors and applied to the Einstein constraint equations in two previous papers.
Building on the work of Giulini and Holzegel (2005), a new numerical approach is developed for computing Cauchy data for Einstein's equations by gluing a Schwarzschild end to a Brill-Lindquist metric via a Corvino-type construction. In contrast to, and in extension of, the numerical strategy of Doulis and Rinne (2016), the overdetermined Poisson problem resulting from the Brill wave ansatz is decomposed to obtain two uniquely solvable problems. A pseudospectral method and Newton-Krylov root finder are utilized to perform the gluing. The convergence analysis strongly indicates that the numerica…
We describe a numerical method to construct Cauchy data extending to space-like infinity based on Corvino's (2000) gluing method. Adopting the setting of Giulini and Holzegel (2005), we restrict ourselves here to vacuum axisymmetric spacetimes and glue a Schwarzschildean end to Brill-Lindquist data describing two non-rotating black holes. Our numerical implementation is based on pseudo-spectral methods, and we carry out extensive convergence tests to check the validity of our numerical results. We also investigate the dependence of the total ADM mass on the details of the gluing construction.
In this work a new numerical technique to prepare Cauchy data for the initial value problem (IVP) formulation of Einstein's field equations is presented. Directly inspired by the exterior asymptotic gluing (EAG) result of Corvino (2000) our (pseudo)-spectral scheme is demonstrated under the assumption of axisymmetry so as to fashion composite Hamiltonian constraint satisfying initial data featuring internal binary black holes (BBH) as glued to exterior Schwarzschild initial data in isotropic form. The generality of the method is illustrated in a comparison of the ADM mass of EAG initial data s…
We survey some results on scalar curvature and properties of solutions to the Einstein constraint equations. Topics include an extended discussion of asymptotically flat solutions to the constraint equations, including recent results on the geometry of the center of mass of such solutions. We also review methods to construct solutions to the constraint equations, including the conformal method, as well as gluing techniques for which it is important to understand both conformal and non-conformal deformations of the scalar curvature.

The first step in the building of a spacetime solution of Einstein's gravitational field equations via the initial value formulation is finding a solution of the Einstein constraint equations. We recall the conformal method for constructing solutions of the constraints and we recall what it tells us about the parameterization of the space of such solutions. One would like to know how to construct solutions which model particular physical phenomena. One useful step towards this goal is learning how to glue together known solutions of the constraint equations. We discuss recent results concernin…
We construct a class of time-symmetric initial data sets for the Einstein vacuum equation modeling elementary configurations of multiple ``almost isolated" systems. Each such initial data set consists of a collection of several localized sources of gravitational radiation, and lies in a family of data sets which is closed under scaling out the distances between the systems by arbitrarily large amounts. This class contains data sets which are not asymptotically flat, but to which nonetheless a finite ADM mass can be ascribed. The construction proceeds by a gluing scheme using the Brill--Lindqui…
Approximations are commonly employed to find approximate solutions to the Einstein equations. These solutions, however, are usually only valid in some specific spacetime region. A global solution can be constructed by gluing approximate solutions together, but this procedure is difficult because discontinuities can arise, leading to large violations of the Einstein equations. In this paper, we provide an attempt to formalize this gluing scheme by studying transition functions that join approximate solutions together. In particular, we propose certain sufficient conditions on these functions an…
We present a gluing construction which adds, via a localized deformation, exactly Delaunay ends to generic metrics with constant positive scalar curvature. This provides time-symmetric initial data sets for the vacuum Einstein equations with positive cosmological constant with exactly Kottler-Schwarzschild-de Sitter ends, extending the results in arXiv:0710.3365 [gr-qc].
This article, written to appear as a chapter in "The Springer Handbook of Spacetime", is a review of the initial value problem for Einstein's gravitational field theory in general relativity. Designed to be accessible to graduate students who have taken a first course in general relativity, the article first discusses how to reformulate the spacetime fields and spacetime covariant field equations of Einstein's theory in terms of fields and field equations compatible with a 3+1 foliation of spacetime with spacelike hypersurfaces. It proceeds to discuss the arguments which show that the initial …
We prove that there are no restrictions on the spatial topology of asymptotically flat solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations in (n+1)-dimensions. We do this by gluing a solution of the vacuum constraint equations on an arbitrary compact manifold to an asymptotically Euclidean solution of the constraints on R^n. For any compact manifold which does not admit a metric of positive scalar curvature, this provides for the existence of asymptotically flat vacuum spacetimes with no maximal slices. Our main theorem is a special case of a more general gluing construction for nondegenerate solutions…
We construct large families of initial data sets for the vacuum Einstein equations with positive cosmological constant which contain exactly Delaunay ends; these are non-trivial initial data sets which coincide with those for the Kottler-Schwarzschild-de Sitter metrics in regions of infinite extent. From the purely Riemannian geometric point of view, this produces complete, constant positive scalar curvature metrics with exact Delaunay ends which are not globally Delaunay. The ends can be used to construct new compact initial data sets via gluing constructions. The construction provided applie…
Given a truncated incoming null cone and a truncated outgoing null cone intersecting at a two sphere $S$ with smooth characteristic initial data, a theorem of Rendall shows that the vacuum Einstein equations can be solved in a small neighborhood of $S$ in the future of $S$. We show that in fact the vacuum Einstein equations can be solved in a neighborhood in the future of the cones, as long as the constraint equations are initially satisfied on the null cones. The proof is based on energy type estimates and relies heavily on the null structure of the Einstein equations in the double null folia…
We consider a characteristic initial value problem for a class of symmetric hyperbolic systems with initial data given on two smooth null intersecting characteristic surfaces. We prove existence of solutions on a future neighborhood of the initial surfaces. The general result is applied to general semilinear wave equations, as well as the Einstein equations with or without sources, and conformal variations thereof.
The main goal of this work consists in showing that the analytic solutions for a class of characteristic problems for the Einstein vacuum equations have an existence region larger than the one provided by the Cauchy-Kowalevski theorem due to the intrinsic hyperbolicity of the Einstein equations. To prove this result we first describe a geometric way of writing the vacuum Einstein equations for the characteristic problems we are considering, in a gauge characterized by the introduction of a double null cone foliation of the spacetime. Then we prove that the existence region for the analytic sol…
We investigate quasi-free Hadamard states defined via characteristic initial data on null cones centred at the axis of symmetry in spherically symmetric space-times. We characterize the necessary singular behaviour of null boundary two-point functions such that one can define non-linear observables at this null boundary and give formulas for the calculation of these observables. These results extend earlier characterizations of null boundary states defining Hadamard states in the bulk of the null cone. As an application of our derived formulas, we consider their implications for the semi-class…
We show how to assign initial data for the characteristic Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs system on two intersecting smooth null hypersurfaces. We successfully adapt the hierarchical method set up by A. D. Rendall to solve the same problem for the Einstein equations in vacuum and with perfect fluid source. Unlike the work of Rendall, many delicate calculations and expressions are given in details so as to address, in a forthcoming work, the issue of global resolution of the characteristic initial value problem for the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs system. The method obviously applies to the Einstein-Max…
In this work we give a complete picture of how to in a direct simple way define the mass at null infinity in harmonic coordinates in three different ways that we show satisfy the Bondi mass loss law. The first and second way involve only the limit of metric (Trautman mass) respectively the null second fundamental forms along asymptotically characteristic surfaces (asymptotic Hawking mass) that only depend on the ADM mass. The last in an original way involves construction of special characteristic coordinates at null infinity (Bondi mass). The results here rely on asymptotics of the metric deri…
We show some characteristics of three exact solutions to the Einstein's gravity minimally coupled to a Quintessence field. Besides eternal inflation, several other interesting inflationary processes, such as transitory inflation, are attained in these solutions. Singularity is avoided in some special cases.
We analyse the Cauchy problem on a characteristic cone, including its vertex, for the Einstein equations in arbitrary dimensions. We use a wave map gauge, solve the obtained constraints and show gauge conservation.
We derive explicit formulae for a set of constraints for the Einstein equations on a null hypersurface, in arbitrary dimensions. We solve these constraints and show that they provide necessary and sufficient conditions so that a spacetime solution of the Cauchy problem on a characteristic cone for the hyperbolic system of the reduced Einstein equations in wave-map gauge also satisfies the full Einstein equations. We prove a geometric uniqueness theorem for this Cauchy problem in the vacuum case.
In any dimension $D$, the Euclidean Einstein-Hilbert action, which describes gravity in the absence of matter, can be discretized over random discrete spaces obtained by gluing families of polytopes together in all possible ways. In the physical limit of small Newton constant, only the spaces which maximize the mean curvature survive. In two dimensions, this results in a theory of random discrete spheres, which converge in the continuum limit towards the Brownian sphere, a random fractal space interpreted as a quantum random space-time. In this limit, the continuous Liouville theory of $D=2$ q…
A choice of first-order variables for the characteristic problem of the linearized Einstein equations is found which casts the system into manifestly well-posed form. The concept of well-posedness for characteristic problems invoked is that there exists an \textit{a priori} estimate of the solution of the characteristic problem in terms of the data. The notion of manifest well-posedness consists of an algebraic criterion sufficient for the existence of the estimates, and is to characteristic problems as symmetric hyperbolicity is to Cauchy problems. Both notions have been made precise elsewere…
This is the second part of our result on a class of global characteristic problems for the Einstein vacuum equations with small initial data. In the previous work denoted by (I), our attention was focused on prescribing the initial data satisfying the costraints imposed by the characteristic problem. Here we show how the global existence result can be achieved. This part is heavily based on the global results of D.Christodoulou, S.Klainerman and S.Klainerman, F.Nicolo`.
We adapt Luk's analysis of the characteristic initial value problem in General Relativity to the asymptotic characteristic problem for the conformal Einstein field equations to demonstrate the local existence of solutions in a neighbourhood of the set on which the data are given. In particular, we obtain existence of solutions along a narrow rectangle along null infinity which, in turn, corresponds to an infinite domain in the asymptotic region of the physical spacetime. This result generalises work by Kánnár on the local existence of solutions to the characteristic initial value problem by me…
In this paper, we initiate the study of the asymptotically AdS initial-boundary value problem for the Einstein-massless Vlasov system with $Λ<0$ in spherical symmetry. We will establish the existence and uniqueness of a maximal future development for the characteristic initial-boundary value problem in the case when smooth initial data are prescribed on a future light cone $\mathcal{C}^{+}$ emanating from a point at $\{r=0\}$ and a reflecting boundary condition is imposed on conformal infinity $\mathcal{I}$. We will then prove a number of continuation criteria for smooth solutions of the spher…
The main goal of this work consists in showing that the analytic solutions for a class of characteristic problems for the Einstein vacuum equations have an existence region larger than the one provided by the Cauchy-Kowalevski theorem, due to the intrinsic hyperbolicity of the Einstein equations. The magnitude of this region depends only on suitable $H_s$ Sobolev norms of the initial data for a fixed $s\leq 7$ and if the initial data are sufficiently small the analytic solution is global. In a previous paper, hereafter "I", we have described a geometric way of writing the vacuum Einstein equat…
This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to an error in the use of the Cauchy-Kowalevski theorem in section 4., theorem 4.1 which does not allow to prove the final result. When (and if) this error will be cured it will be replaced by a corrected version of the result.
We show how to prescribe the initial data of a characteristic problem satisfying the costraints, the smallness, the regularity and the asymptotic decay suitable to prove a global existence result. In this paper, the first of two, we show in detail the construction of the initial data and give a sketch of the existence result. This proof, which mimicks the analogous one for the non characteristic problem in [Kl-Ni], will be the content of a subsequent paper.
