Building on the work of Giulini and Holzegel (2005), a new numerical approach is developed for computing Cauchy data for Einstein's equations by gluing a Schwarzschild end to a Brill-Lindquist metric via a Corvino-type construction. In contrast to, and in extension of, the numerical strategy of Doulis and Rinne (2016), the overdetermined Poisson problem resulting from the Brill wave ansatz is decomposed to obtain two uniquely solvable problems. A pseudospectral method and Newton-Krylov root finder are utilized to perform the gluing. The convergence analysis strongly indicates that the numerical strategy developed here is able to produce highly accurate results. It is observed that Schwarzschild ends of various ADM masses can be glued to the same interior configuration using the same gluing radius.
For two-black-hole time-symmetric initial data we consider the Corvino construction of gluing an exact Schwarzschild end. We propose to do this by using Brill waves. We address the question of whether this method can be used to reduce the overall energy, which seems to relate to the question of whether it can reduce the amount of `spurious' gravitational radiation. We find a positive answer at first order in the inverse gluing radius.
We construct numerically time-symmetric initial data that are Schwarzschildean at spatial infinity and Brill-Lindquist in the interior. The transition between these two data sets takes place along a finite gluing region equipped with an axisymmetric Brill wave metric. The construction is based on an application of Corvino's gluing method using Brill waves due to Giulini and Holzegel. Here, we use a gluing function that includes a simple angular dependence. We also investigate the dependence of the ADM mass of our construction on the details of the gluing procedure.
For binary black holes the lapse function corresponding to the Brill-Lindquist initial value solution for uncharged black holes is given in analytic form under the maximal slicing condition. In the limiting case of very small ratio of mass to separation between the black holes the surface defined by the zero value of the lapse function coincides with the minimal surfaces around the singularities.
The Misner initial value solution for two momentarily stationary black holes has been the focus of much numerical study. We report here analytic results for an astrophysically similar initial solution, that of Brill and Lindquist (BL). Results are given from perturbation theory for initially close holes and are compared with available numerical results. A comparison is made of the radiation generated from the BL and the Misner initial values, and the physical meaning is discussed.
This article commences a study of convergence of discretized point-object configurations, which we call Brill-Lindquist-Riemann sums, towards a charged dust continuum from the perspective of relativistic initial data. We are motivated by the interpretation of Brill-Lindquist-Riemann sums as collections of relatively isolated astrophysical bodies such as stars and galaxies in the universe, and the interpretation of the dust continuum as the universe itself. Our work begins by establishing the existence and the uniqueness of horizons/minimal surfaces of Brill-Lindquist metrics in the vicinity of…
Motivated by the TeV-scale gravity scenarios, we study gravitational radiation in the head-on collision of two black holes in higher dimensional spacetimes using a close-limit approximation. We prepare time-symmetric initial data sets for two black holes (the so-called Brill-Lindquist initial data) and numerically evolve the spacetime in terms of a gauge invariant formulation for the perturbation around the higher-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes. The waveform and radiated energy of gravitational waves emitted in the head-on collision are clarified. Also, the complex frequencies of fundam…
The Brill-Lindquist time-symmetric initial-value solution for two uncharged black holes is rederived using the Hamiltonian constraint equation with Dirac delta distributions as a source for the binary black-hole field. The bare masses of the Brill-Lindquist black holes are introduced in a way which is applied, after straightforward modification, to the Misner-Linquist binary black-hole solution.
We describe a numerical method to construct Cauchy data extending to space-like infinity based on Corvino's (2000) gluing method. Adopting the setting of Giulini and Holzegel (2005), we restrict ourselves here to vacuum axisymmetric spacetimes and glue a Schwarzschildean end to Brill-Lindquist data describing two non-rotating black holes. Our numerical implementation is based on pseudo-spectral methods, and we carry out extensive convergence tests to check the validity of our numerical results. We also investigate the dependence of the total ADM mass on the details of the gluing construction.
An approximate analytical and non-linear solution of the Einstein field equations is derived for a system of multiple non-rotating black holes. The associated space-time has the same asymptotic structure as the Brill-Lindquist initial data solution for multiple black holes. The system admits an Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) Hamiltonian that can particularly evolve the Brill-Lindquist solution over finite time intervals. The gravitational field of this model may properly be referred to as a skeleton approximate solution of the Einstein field equations. The approximation is based on a conformally …
In this work a new numerical technique to prepare Cauchy data for the initial value problem (IVP) formulation of Einstein's field equations is presented. Directly inspired by the exterior asymptotic gluing (EAG) result of Corvino (2000) our (pseudo)-spectral scheme is demonstrated under the assumption of axisymmetry so as to fashion composite Hamiltonian constraint satisfying initial data featuring internal binary black holes (BBH) as glued to exterior Schwarzschild initial data in isotropic form. The generality of the method is illustrated in a comparison of the ADM mass of EAG initial data s…
The Newman-Penrose constants of the spacetime corresponding to the development of the Brill-Lindquist initial data are calculated by making use of a particular representation of spatial infinity due to H. Friedrich. The Brill-Lindquist initial data set represents the head-on collision of two non-rotating black holes. In this case one non-zero constant is obtained. Its value is given in terms of the product of the individual masses of the black holes and the square of a distance parameter separating the two black holes. This constant retains its value all along null infinity, and therefore it p…
We look for physically realistic initial data in numerical relativity which are in agreement with post-Newtonian approximations. We propose a particular solution of the time-symmetric constraint equation, appropriate to two momentarily static black holes, in the form of a conformal decomposition of the spatial metric. This solution is isometric to the post-Newtonian metric up to the 2PN order. It represents a non-linear deformation of the solution of Brill and Lindquist, i.e. an asymptotically flat region is connected to two asymptotically flat (in a certain weak sense) sheets, that are the im…
Post-Newtonian expansions of the Brill-Lindquist and Misner-Lindquist solutions of the time-symmetric two-black-hole initial value problem are derived. The static Hamiltonians related to the expanded solutions, after identifying the bare masses in both solutions, are found to differ from each other at the third post-Newtonian approximation. By shifting the position variables of the black holes the post-Newtonian expansions of the three metrics can be made to coincide up to the fifth post-Newtonian order resulting in identical static Hamiltonians up the third post-Newtonian approximation. The c…
We discuss possible origins for discrepancies observed in the radiated energies in head-on collisions of non-spinning binaries starting from Brill-Lindquist and superposed Kerr-Schild data. For this purpose, we discuss the impact of different choices of gauge parameters and a small initial boost of the black holes.
We show that the Brill-Lindquist initial data provides a counterexample to a Riemannian Penrose inequality with charge conjectured by G. Gibbons. The observation illustrates a sub-additive characteristic of the area radii for the individual connected components of an outermost horizon as a lower bound of the ADM mass.
We construct initial data for several black holes with arbitrary momenta and spins by a new method that is based on a compactification of Brill-Lindquist wormholes. When treated numerically, the method leads to a significant simplification over the conventional approach which is based on throats and an isometry condition.
We present a new numerical code developed for the evolution of binary black-hole spacetimes using different initial data and evolution techniques. The code is demonstrated to produce state-of-the-art simulations of orbiting and inspiralling black-hole binaries with convergent waveforms. We also present the first detailed study of the dependence of gravitational waveforms resulting from three-dimensional evolutions of different types of initial data. For this purpose we compare the waveforms generated by head-on collisions of superposed Kerr-Schild, Misner and Brill-Lindquist data over a wide r…
Using a representation of spatial infinity based in the properties of conformal geodesics, the first terms of an expansion for the Bondi mass for the development of time symmetric, conformally flat initial data are calculated. As it is to be expected, the Bondi mass agrees with the ADM at the sets where null infinity ``touches'' spatial infinity. The second term in the expansion is proportional to the sum of the squared norms of the Newman-Penrose constants of the spacetime. In base of this result it is argued that these constants may provide a measure of the incoming radiation contained in th…
We review the problem of finding an apparent horizon in Cauchy data (Sigma, g_ab, K_ab) in three space dimensions without symmetries. We describe a family of algorithms which includes the pseudo-spectral apparent horizon finder of Nakamura et al. and the curvature flow method proposed by Tod as special cases. We suggest that other algorithms in the family may combine the speed of the former with the robustness of the latter. A numerical implementation for Cauchy data given on a grid in Cartesian coordinates is described, and tested on Brill-Lindquist and Kerr initial data. The new algorithm ap…
COCAL is a code for computing equilibriums or quasiequilibrium initial data of single or binary compact objects based on finite difference methods. We present the results of supplementary convergence tests of COCAL code using time symmetric binary black hole data (Brill-Lindquist solution). Then, we compare the initial data of binary black holes on the conformally flat spatial slice obtained from COCAL and KADATH, where KADATH is a library for solving a wide class of problems in theoretical physics including relativistic compact objects with spectral methods. Data calculated from the two codes…
We construct and evolve non-rotating vacuum initial data with a ring singularity, based on a simple extension of the standard Brill-Lindquist multiple black-hole initial data, and search for event horizons with spatial slices that are toroidal when the ring radius is sufficiently large. While evolutions of the ring singularity are not numerically feasible for large radii, we find some evidence, based on configurations of multiple BHs arranged in a ring, that this configuration leads to singular limit where the horizon width has zero size, possibly indicating the presence of a naked singularity…
We study the head-on collision of black holes starting from unsymmetrized, Brill--Lindquist type data for black holes with non-vanishing initial linear momentum. Evolution of the initial data is carried out with the ``close limit approximation,'' in which small initial separation and momentum are assumed, and second-order perturbation theory is used. We find agreement that is remarkably good, and that in some ways improves with increasing momentum. This work extends a previous study in which second order perturbation calculations were used for momentarily stationary initial data, and another s…
We construct a class of time-symmetric initial data sets for the Einstein vacuum equation modeling elementary configurations of multiple ``almost isolated" systems. Each such initial data set consists of a collection of several localized sources of gravitational radiation, and lies in a family of data sets which is closed under scaling out the distances between the systems by arbitrarily large amounts. This class contains data sets which are not asymptotically flat, but to which nonetheless a finite ADM mass can be ascribed. The construction proceeds by a gluing scheme using the Brill--Lindqui…
We extract the Weyl scalars $Ψ_0$ and $Ψ_4$ in the quasi-Kinnersley tetrad by finding initially the (gauge--, tetrad--, and background--independent) transverse quasi-Kinnersley frame. This step still leaves two undetermined degrees of freedom: the ratio $|Ψ_0|/|Ψ_4|$, and one of the phases (the product $|Ψ_0|\cdot |Ψ_4|$ and the {\em sum} of the phases are determined by the so-called BB radiation scalar). The residual symmetry ("spin/boost") can be removed by gauge fixing of spin coefficients in two steps: First, we break the boost symmetry by requiring that $ρ$ corresponds to a global constan…
