We analyse the Cauchy problem on a characteristic cone, including its vertex, for the Einstein equations in arbitrary dimensions. We use a wave map gauge, solve the obtained constraints and show gauge conservation.
We prove that analytic initial data on a light cone arising from a metric satisfying a "near-roundness" condition near the vertex lead to a solution of the vacuum Einstein equations to the future of the light-cone.
We derive explicit formulae for a set of constraints for the Einstein equations on a null hypersurface, in arbitrary dimensions. We solve these constraints and show that they provide necessary and sufficient conditions so that a spacetime solution of the Cauchy problem on a characteristic cone for the hyperbolic system of the reduced Einstein equations in wave-map gauge also satisfies the full Einstein equations. We prove a geometric uniqueness theorem for this Cauchy problem in the vacuum case.
Recently an explicit resolution of the Calabi-Yau cone over the inhomogeneous five-dimensional Einstein-Sasaki space Y^{2,1} was obtained. It was constructed by specialising the parameters in the BPS limit of recently-discovered Kerr-NUT-AdS metrics in higher dimensions. We study the occurrence of such non-singular resolutions of Calabi-Yau cones in a more general context. Although no further six-dimensional examples arise as resolutions of cones over the L^{pqr} Einstein-Sasaki spaces, we find general classes of non-singular cohomogeneity-2 resolutions of higher-dimensional Einstein-Sasaki sp…
Perturbations of the linearized vacuum Einstein equations on a null cone in the Bondi-Sachs formulation of General Relativity can be derived from a single master function with spin weight two, which is related to the Weyl scalar Ψ_0, and which is determined by a simple wave equation. Utilizing a standard spin representation of the tensors on a sphere and two different approaches to solve the master equation, we are able to determine two simple and explicitly time-dependent solutions. Both solutions, of which one is asymptotically flat, comply with the regularity conditions at the vertex of the…
We define the stretched future light cone, a timelike hypersurface composed of the worldlines of radially accelerating observers with constant and uniform proper acceleration. By attributing temperature and entropy to this hypersurface, we derive Einstein's equations from the Clausius relation. Moreover, we show that the gravitational equations of motion for a broad class of diffeomorphism-invariant theories of gravity can be obtained from thermodynamics on the stretched future light cone, provided the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is replaced by the Wald entropy.
We investigate the properties of the condensates of cold atoms at zero temperature in the tunable binary Bose-Einstein condensate system with a Rabi transition between atomic hyperfine states. We use this system to examine the effect of quantum fluctuations in a tunable quantum gas on phonon propagation. We show that the system can be represented by a coupled two-field model of a gapless phonon and a gapped mode, which are analogous to the Goldstone and Higgs particles in particle physics. We then further trace out the gapped modes to give an effective purely phononic theory using closed-time-…
If Einstein's equations are to describe a field theory of gravity in Minkowski spacetime, then causality requires that the effective curved metric must respect the flat background metric's null cone. The kinematical problem is solved using a generalized eigenvector formalism based on the Segré classification of symmetric rank 2 tensors with respect to a Lorentzian metric. Securing the correct relationship between the two null cones dynamically plausibly is achieved using the naive gauge freedom. New variables tied to the generalized eigenvector formalism reduce the configuration space to the c…
The main goal of this work consists in showing that the analytic solutions for a class of characteristic problems for the Einstein vacuum equations have an existence region larger than the one provided by the Cauchy-Kowalevski theorem, due to the intrinsic hyperbolicity of the Einstein equations. The magnitude of this region depends only on suitable $H_s$ Sobolev norms of the initial data for a fixed $s\leq 7$ and if the initial data are sufficiently small the analytic solution is global. In a previous paper, hereafter "I", we have described a geometric way of writing the vacuum Einstein equat…
Recently the neglected issue of the causal structure in the flat spacetime approach to Einstein's theory of gravity has been substantially resolved. Consistency requires that the flat metric's null cone be respected by the null cone of the effective curved metric. While consistency is not automatic, thoughtful use of the naive gauge freedom resolves the problem. After briefly recapitulating how consistent causality is achieved, we consider the flat Robertson-Walker Big Bang model. The Big Bang singularity in the spatially flat Robertson-Walker cosmological model is banished to past infinity in…
In analogy with the standard derivation of the Schwarzschild solution, we find all static, cylindrically symmetric solutions of the Einstein field equations for vacuum. These include not only the well known cone solution, which is locally flat, but others in which the metric coefficients are powers of the radial coordinate and the space-time is curved. These solutions appear in the literature, but in different forms, corresponding to different definitions of the radial coordinate. Because all the vacuum solutions are singular on the axis, we attempt to match them to "interior" solutions with n…
The Einstein equations in wave map gauge are a geometric second order system for a Lorentzian metric. To study existence of solutions of this hyperbolic quasi diagonal system with initial data on a characteristic cone which are not zero in a neighbourhood of the vertex one can appeal to theorems due to Cagnac and Dossa, proved for a scalar wave equation, for initial data in functional spaces relevant for their proofs. It is difficult to check that the initial data that we have constructed as solutions of the Einstein wave-map gauge constraints satisfy the more general of the Cagnac-Dossa hypot…
We show how to assign initial data for the characteristic Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs system on two intersecting smooth null hypersurfaces. We successfully adapt the hierarchical method set up by A. D. Rendall to solve the same problem for the Einstein equations in vacuum and with perfect fluid source. Unlike the work of Rendall, many delicate calculations and expressions are given in details so as to address, in a forthcoming work, the issue of global resolution of the characteristic initial value problem for the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs system. The method obviously applies to the Einstein-Max…
In this paper, the numerical investigation of a Bondi-Hoyle accretion around a non-rotating black hole in a novel four dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity is investigated by solving the general relativistic hydrodynamical equations using the high resolution shock capturing scheme. For this purpose, the accreated matter from the wind-accreating X-ray binaries falls towards the black hole from the far upstream side of the domain, suphersonically. We study the effects of Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α$ in 4D EGB gravity on the accreated matter and shock cones created in the downstream re…
We derive, in 3+1 spacetime dimensions, two alternative systems of quasi-linear wave equations, based on Friedrich's conformal field equations. We analyse their equivalence to Einstein's vacuum field equations when appropriate constraint equations are satisfied by the initial data. As an application, the characteristic initial value problem for the Einstein equations with data on past null infinity is reduced to a characteristic initial value problem for wave equations with data on an ordinary light-cone.
We show some characteristics of three exact solutions to the Einstein's gravity minimally coupled to a Quintessence field. Besides eternal inflation, several other interesting inflationary processes, such as transitory inflation, are attained in these solutions. Singularity is avoided in some special cases.
Given a truncated incoming null cone and a truncated outgoing null cone intersecting at a two sphere $S$ with smooth characteristic initial data, a theorem of Rendall shows that the vacuum Einstein equations can be solved in a small neighborhood of $S$ in the future of $S$. We show that in fact the vacuum Einstein equations can be solved in a neighborhood in the future of the cones, as long as the constraint equations are initially satisfied on the null cones. The proof is based on energy type estimates and relies heavily on the null structure of the Einstein equations in the double null folia…
A choice of first-order variables for the characteristic problem of the linearized Einstein equations is found which casts the system into manifestly well-posed form. The concept of well-posedness for characteristic problems invoked is that there exists an \textit{a priori} estimate of the solution of the characteristic problem in terms of the data. The notion of manifest well-posedness consists of an algebraic criterion sufficient for the existence of the estimates, and is to characteristic problems as symmetric hyperbolicity is to Cauchy problems. Both notions have been made precise elsewere…
This paper studies the spatially homogeneous Einstein-de Sitter cosmological model in the context of a relativistic hierarchical (fractal) cosmology as developed in paper I (0807.0866). The Einstein-de Sitter model is treated as a special case of Lemaitre-Tolman's spacetime, obtained by the appropriate choice of the latter's three arbitrary functions. The observational relations along the past light cone of the model under consideration are calculated, and an investigation of whether or not it has fractal behaviour is performed. It was found that the Einstein-de Sitter model does not seem to r…
This is the second part of our result on a class of global characteristic problems for the Einstein vacuum equations with small initial data. In the previous work denoted by (I), our attention was focused on prescribing the initial data satisfying the costraints imposed by the characteristic problem. Here we show how the global existence result can be achieved. This part is heavily based on the global results of D.Christodoulou, S.Klainerman and S.Klainerman, F.Nicolo`.
Studies of new hyperbolic systems for the Einstein evolution equations show that the ``slicing density'' $α(t,x)$ can be freely specified while the lapse $N = αg^{1/2}$ cannot. Implementation of this small change in the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner action principle leads to canonical equations that agree with the Einstein equations whether or not the constraints are satisfied. The constraint functions, independently of their values, then propagate according to a first order symmetric hyperbolic system whose characteristic cone is the light cone. This result follows from the twice-contracted Bianchi i…
It is well known that Einstein General Relativity can be expressed covariantly in bi-metric spacetime, without the uncertainties which arise from the effects of gravitational energy-momentum pseudo-tensors. However the effect that the Strong Principle of Equivalence (SPOE) has on the curved and flat bi-metric spacetime tetrad structure has not been fully explored. In the context of bi-metric General Relativity the (SPOE) requires that: a) in the absence of gravitation due to spacetime curvature a Global Inertial Cartesian Minkowski (GICM) spacetime frame exists in which Special Relativity is v…
We study the local well-posedness of the Einstein-Yang-Mills equations in constant mean extrinsic curvature spatial harmonic generalized Coulomb gauge (CMCSHGC). In this choice of gauge, the complete Einstein-Yang-Mills equations reduce to a coupled elliptic-hyperbolic system. Utilizing the method developed by Andersson and Moncrief \cite{andersson2003elliptic}, we establish the existence of a unique, local, continuous-in-time solution of this coupled system. This yields an `in time' continuation criteria of the solutions which is to be used in the potential future proof of an improved continu…
We adapt Luk's analysis of the characteristic initial value problem in General Relativity to the asymptotic characteristic problem for the conformal Einstein field equations to demonstrate the local existence of solutions in a neighbourhood of the set on which the data are given. In particular, we obtain existence of solutions along a narrow rectangle along null infinity which, in turn, corresponds to an infinite domain in the asymptotic region of the physical spacetime. This result generalises work by Kánnár on the local existence of solutions to the characteristic initial value problem by me…
This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to an error in the use of the Cauchy-Kowalevski theorem in section 4., theorem 4.1 which does not allow to prove the final result. When (and if) this error will be cured it will be replaced by a corrected version of the result.
In the recent studies of four-dimensional Einstein-Hilbert action, quite a few interesting results such as the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) relations, MHV-Lagrangian and quadratic forms have been reported. These results naturally raise an important question: Whether these results are valid for the modified theories of gravity in 4-dimensions? In this work, we consider $R+α\,R^2$ gravity and derive the complete quartic interaction vertex in light-cone gauge. We then discuss the implications of the results for KLT relations, and computing MHV amplitudes.
We investigate quasi-free Hadamard states defined via characteristic initial data on null cones centred at the axis of symmetry in spherically symmetric space-times. We characterize the necessary singular behaviour of null boundary two-point functions such that one can define non-linear observables at this null boundary and give formulas for the calculation of these observables. These results extend earlier characterizations of null boundary states defining Hadamard states in the bulk of the null cone. As an application of our derived formulas, we consider their implications for the semi-class…
On arbitrary spacetimes, we study the characteristic Cauchy problem for Dirac fields on a light-cone. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions in the future of the light-cone inside a geodesically convex neighbourhood of the vertex. This is done for data in $L^2$ and we give an explicit definition of the space of data on the light-cone producing a solution in $H^1$. The method is based on energy estimates following L. Hörmander (J.F.A. 1990). The data for the characteristic Cauchy problem are only a half of the field, the other half is recovered from the characteristic data by integr…
We present new numerical algorithms for the coupled Einstein-perfect fluid system in axisymmetry. Our framework uses a foliation based on a family of light cones, emanating from a regular center, and terminating at future null infinity. This coordinate system is well adapted to the study of the dynamical spacetimes associated with isolated relativistic compact objects such as neutron stars. In particular, the approach allows the unambiguous extraction of gravitational waves at future null infinity and avoids spurious outer boundary reflections. The code can accurately maintain long-term stabil…
We consider a characteristic initial value problem for a class of symmetric hyperbolic systems with initial data given on two smooth null intersecting characteristic surfaces. We prove existence of solutions on a future neighborhood of the initial surfaces. The general result is applied to general semilinear wave equations, as well as the Einstein equations with or without sources, and conformal variations thereof.
We consider a characteristic initial value problem, with initial data given on a future null cone, for the Einstein (massless) scalar field system with a positive cosmological constant, in Bondi coordinates. We prove that, for small data, this system has a unique global classical solution which is causally geodesically complete to the future and decays polynomially in radius and exponentially in Bondi time, approaching the de Sitter solution.
This work investigates how a conical singularity can affect the specific heat of systems. A free nonrelativistic particle confined to the lateral surface of a cone -- conical box -- is taken as a toy model. Its specific heat is determined as a function of the deficit angle and the temperature. For a vanishing deficit angle, the specific heat is that of a particle in a flat disk where a characteristic temperature separates quantum and classical behaviors, as usual. By increasing the deficit angle the characteristic temperature increases also, and eventually another characteristic temperature (w…
Characteristic methods show excellent promise in the evolution of single black hole spacetimes. The effective coupling with matter fields may help the numerical exploration of important astrophysical systems such as neutron star black hole binaries. To this end we investigate formalisms for numerical relativistic hydrodynamics which can be adaptable to null (characteristic) foliations of the spacetime. The feasibility of the procedure is demonstrated with one-dimensional results on the evolution of self-gravitating matter accreting onto a dynamical black hole.
The two-point correlation function for the dust distribution in the unperturbed Einstein-de Sitter cosmological model is studied along the past light cone. It was found that this function seems unable to represent the theoretical distribution of dust along the backward null cone of this unperturbed model, which has already been determined in a previous paper as being apparently inhomogeneous at ranges usually considered as local. Such result was revisited in order to determine more precisely the quantitative limits where, in theory, we can detect apparent homogeneity, and it was found that thi…
