In this paper, the numerical investigation of a Bondi-Hoyle accretion around a non-rotating black hole in a novel four dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity is investigated by solving the general relativistic hydrodynamical equations using the high resolution shock capturing scheme. For this purpose, the accreated matter from the wind-accreating X-ray binaries falls towards the black hole from the far upstream side of the domain, suphersonically. We study the effects of Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α$ in 4D EGB gravity on the accreated matter and shock cones created in the downstream region in detail. The required time having the shock cone in downstream region is getting smaller for alpha > 0 while it is increasing for alpha < 0. It is found that increases in alpha leads violent oscillations inside the shock cone and increases the accretion efficiency. The violent oscillations would cause increase in the energy flux, temperature, and spectrum of X- rays. So the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are naturally produced inside the shock cone when -5 \leq alpha \leq 0.8. It is also confirmed that EGB black hole solution converges to the Schwarzschild one in general relativity when alpha \rightarrow 0. Besides, the negative coupling constants also give reasonable physical solutions and increase of alpha in negative directions suppresses the possible oscillation observed in the shock cone.
Understanding the physical structures of the accreated matter very close to the black hole in quasars and active galactic nucleus (AGNs) is an important milestone to constrain the activities occurring in their centers. In this paper, we numerically investigate the effects of the asymptotic velocities on the physical structures of the accretion disk around the Kerr and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) rapidly rotating black holes. The Bondi-Hoyle accretion is considered with a falling gas towards the black hole in upstream region of the computational domain. The shock cones are naturally produced in…
The numerical investigation of Bondi-Hoyle accretion onto a moving black hole has a long history, both in Newtonian and in general-relativistic physics. By performing new two-dimensional and general-relativistic simulations onto a rotating black hole, we point out a novel feature, namely, that quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are naturally produced in the shock cone that develops in the downstream part of the flow. Because the shock cone in the downstream part of the flow acts as a cavity trapping pressure perturbations, modes with frequencies in the integer ratios 2:1 and 3:1 are easily pro…
We present a new code for performing general-relativistic radiation-hydrodynamics simulations of accretion flows onto black holes. The radiation field is treated in the optically-thick approximation, with the opacity contributed by Thomson scattering and thermal bremsstrahlung. Our analysis is concentrated on a detailed numerical investigation of hot two-dimensional, Bondi-Hoyle accretion flows with various Mach numbers. We find significant differences with respect to purely hydrodynamical evolutions. In particular, once the system relaxes to a radiation-pressure dominated regime, the accretio…
We study the relativistic Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion onto a Schwarzschild black hole (BH), which is surrounded by rigid and small, randomly distributed, bodies. These bodies are idealized representations of substructure like stars passing close to the BH, bubbles created by stellar winds or cold clumps. We explore cases where the filling factor of these bodies is small. The flow is assumed to be adiabatic and move supersonically towards the black hole. The interaction with these rigid obstacles transforms ram pressure of the flow into thermal pressure through bow shocks, slowing down the f…
Merging supermassive black hole-black hole (BHBH) binaries produced in galaxy mergers are promising sources of detectable gravitational waves. If such a merger takes place in a gaseous environment, there is a possibility of a simultaneous detection of electromagnetic and gravitational radiation, as the stirring, shock heating and accretion of the gas may produce variability and enhancements in the electromagnetic flux. Such a simultaneous detection can provide a wealth of opportunities to study gravitational physics, accretion physics, and cosmology. We investigate this scenario by performing …
We present the results of an exhaustive numerical study of fully relativistic non-axisymmetric Bondi-Hoyle accretion onto a moving Schwarzschild black hole. We have solved the equations of general relativistic hydrodynamics with a high-resolution shock-capturing numerical scheme based on a linearized Riemann solver. The numerical code was previously used to study axisymmetric flow configurations past a Schwarzschild hole. We have analyzed and discussed the flow morphology for a sample of asymptotically high Mach number models. The results of this work reveal that initially asymptotic uniform f…
In our program of studying numerically the so-called Bondi-Hoyle accretion in the fully relativistic regime, we present here first results concerning the evolution of matter accreting supersonically onto a rotating (Kerr) black hole. These computations generalize previous results where the non-rotating (Schwarzschild) case was extensively considered. We parametrize our initial data by the asymptotic conditions for the fluid and explore the dependence of the solution on the angular momentum of the black hole. Towards quantifying the robustness of our numerical results, we use two different geom…

In this paper, we study light rays in a Kazakov-Solodukhin black hole. To this end, we use the optical geometry of the Kazakov-Solodukhin black hole within the Gauss-bonnet theorem. We first show the effect of the deformation parameter $a$ on the Gaussian optical curvature, and then we use the modern method popularized by Gibbons and Werner to calculate the weak deflection angle of light. Our calculations of deflection angle show how gravitational lensing is affected by the deformation parameter $a$. Moreover, we demonstrate the effect of a plasma medium on weak gravitational lensing by the Ka…
We consider a Lemaitre - Tolman - Bondi type space-time in Einstein gravity with the Gauss-Bonnet combination of quadratic curvature terms, and present exact solution in closed form. It turns out that the presence of the coupling constant of the Gauss-Bonnet terms alpha > 0 completely changes the causal structure of the singularities from the analogous general relativistic case. The gravitational collapse of inhomogeneous dust in the five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet extended Einstein equations leads to formation of a massive, but weak, timelike singularity which is forbidden in general relativity…
The Einstein Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity is the low energy limit of heterotic super-symmetric string theory. This paper deals gravitational collapse of perfect fluid in Einstein Gauss-Bonnet gravity by considering the Lemaitre - Tolman - Bondi metric. For this purpose, the closed form of exact solution of equations of motion has been determined by using the conservation of stress-energy tensor and the condition of marginally bound shells. It has been investigated that the presence of Gauss-Bonnet coupling term $α>0$ and pressure of the fluid modifies the structure and time formation of sing…
This paper is devoted to study the stability/instability of the expansionfree self gravitating source in the framework of Einstein Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The source has been taken as Tolman-Bondi model which is homogenous in nature. The field equations as dynamical equations have been evaluated in Gauss-Bonnet gravity in five dimensions. The junction conditions as well as cavity evaluations equations have been explored in detail. The perturbation scheme of first order has been applied to dynamical as Einstein Gauss-Bonnet field equations. The concept of Newtonian as well post Newtonian approxim…
We model self-gravitating disks in Keplerian motion around the primary black hole, in the binary black hole system OJ 287 with a torus, employing a consistently general-relativistic approach. They satisfy geometric and/or mass density requirements found by Sillanpaa, Valtonen, Lehto and their coworkers. It is plausible that essential observational features of OJ 287 can be obtained via the general-relativistic description of the Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton transits through these tori, within the framework of radiation hydrodynamics.
Recently, an action principle for the $D\rightarrow4$ limit of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity has been proposed. It is a special scalar-tensor theory that belongs to the family of Horndeski gravity. It also has a well defined $D\rightarrow3$ and $D\rightarrow2$ limit. In this work, we examine this theory in three and four dimensions in Bondi-Sachs framework. In both three and four dimensions, we find that there is no news function associated to the scalar field, which means that there is no scalar propagating degree of freedom in the theory. In four dimensions, the mass-loss formula is not …
In the present work we have investigated a new anisotropic solution for polytropic star in the framework of $4D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity. The possibility of determining the masses and radii of compact stars which puts some limitations on equation of state (EoS) above the nuclear saturation density. For this purpose, the $4D$ EGB field equations are solved by taking a generalized polytropic equation of state (EoS) with Finch-Skea ansatz. The generalized solution for anisotropic model has been tested for different values of Gauss-Bonnet constant $α$ which satisfies all the physical c…
We present a novel analytic model of relativistic wind accretion on to a Schwarzschild black hole. This model constitutes a general relativistic extension of the classical model of wind accretion by Bondi, Hoyle, and Lyttleton (BHL). As in BHL, this model is based on the assumptions of steady state, axisymmetry, and ballistic motion. Analytic expressions are provided for the wind streamlines while simple numerical schemes are presented for calculating the corresponding accretion rate and density field. The resulting accretion rate is greater in the relativistic model when compared to the Newto…
We present a new geometrical approach to the study of accretion flows onto rotating (Kerr) black holes. Instead of Boyer-Lindquist coordinates, the standard choice in all existing numerical simulations in the literature, we employ the simplest example of a horizon adapted coordinate system, the Kerr-Schild coordinates. This choice eliminates boundary ambiguities and unphysical divergent behavior at the event horizon. Computations of Bondi-Hoyle accretion onto extreme Kerr black holes, performed here for the first time, demonstrate the key advantages of this procedure. We argue it offers the be…
We derive an exact, axially symmetric solution representing stationary accretion of the relativistic, collisionless Vlasov gas onto a moving Schwarzschild black hole. The gas is assumed to be in thermal equilibrium at infinity, where it obeys the Maxwell-Jüttner distribution. The Vlasov equation is solved analytically in terms of suitable action-angle variables. We provide explicit expressions for the particle current density and accretion rates. In the limit of infinite asymptotic temperature of the gas, we recover the qualitative picture known form the relativistic Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accr…
Scalar fields pervade theoretical physics and are a fundamental ingredient to solve the dark matter problem, to realize the Peccei-Quinn mechanism in QCD or the string-axiverse scenario. They are also a useful proxy for more complex matter interactions, such as accretion disks or matter in extreme conditions. Here, we study the collision between scalar "clouds" and rotating black holes. For the first time we are able to compare analytic estimates and strong field, nonlinear numerical calculations for this problem. As the black hole pierces through the cloud it accretes according to the Bondi-H…
With the goal of providing more accurate and realistic estimates of the secular behavior of the mass accretion and drag rates in the "common-envelope" scenario encountered when a black hole or a neutron star moves in the stellar envelope of a red supergiant star, we have carried out the first general relativistic simulations of the accretion flow onto a nonrotating black hole moving supersonically in a medium with regular but different density gradients. The simulations reveal that the supersonic motion always rapidly reaches a stationary state and it produces a shock cone in the downstream pa…
We describe the concept of a shallow-water setup for simulation of gas accretion onto a black hole in the mode of a quasi-spherical accretion. The bottom for the shallow-water container must have the funnel-shaped curvilinear concavo-convex shape. We calculate the configuration surface of the properly shaped bottom that simulates precisely the Newtonian or pseudo-Newtonian gravitational potentials. Like the spatial part of the Schwarzchild metric, the funnel's surface metric has a (removable) singularity at the finite distance from the funnel's center and places the certain funnel's depth whic…
Affine gravity and the Palatini formalism contribute both to produce a simple and unique formula for calculating charges at spatial and null infinity for Lovelock type Lagrangians whose variational derivatives do not depend on second-order derivatives of the field components. The method is based on the covariant generalization due to Julia and Silva of the Regge-Teitelboim procedure that was used to define properly the mass in the classical formulation of Einstein's theory of gravity. Numerous applications reproduce standard results obtained by other secure but mostly specialized methods. As a…
