We study the distribution of the Frobenius traces on $K3$ surfaces. We compare experimental data with the predictions made by the Sato--Tate conjecture, i.e. with the theoretical distributions derived from the theory of Lie groups assuming equidistribution. Our sample consists of generic $K3$ surfaces, as well as of such having real and complex multiplication. Each time, the theoretical density and the histogram obtained by counting points match in the range of visible accuracy. Thus, we report evidence for the Sato-Tate conjecture for the surfaces considered.
In a previous article, we obtained data on the distribution of traces of Frobenius of non-hyperelliptic genus $3$ curves over small finite fields. In the present one, we give a heuristic explanation of these data, by extrapolating from results on the distribution of traces of Frobenius for plane curves whose degree is small with respect to the cardinality of their finite base field. In particular, our methods shed some new light on the asymmetry of the distribution around its mean value, which is related to the Serre obstruction.
We prove that the trace of the Frobenius endofunctor of the category of automorphic sheaves with nilpotent singular support maps isomorphically to the space of unramified automorphic functions, settling a conjecture from [AGKRRV1]. More generally, we show that traces of Frobenius-Hecke functors produce shtuka cohomologies.
The purpose of this article is to study the distribution of the trace on the unitary symplectic group. We recall its relevance to equidistribution results for the eigenvalues of the Frobenius in families of abelian varieties over finite fields, and to the limiting distribution of the number of points of curves. We give four expressions of the trace distribution if g = 2, in terms of special functions, and also an expression of the distribution of the trace in terms of elementary symmetric functions. In an appendix, we prove a formula for the trace of the exterior power of the identity represen…
We examine the relationship between the notion of Frobenius splitting and ordinarity for varieties. We show the following: a) The de Rham-Witt cohomology groups $H^i(X, W({\mathcal O}_X))$ of a smooth projective Frobenius split variety are finitely generated over $W(k)$. b) we provide counterexamples to a question of V. B. Mehta that Frobenius split varieties are ordinary or even Hodge-Witt. c) a Kummer $K3$ surface associated to an Abelian surface is $F$-split (ordinary) if and only if the associated Abelian surface is $F$-split (ordinary). d) for a $K3$-surface defined over a number field, t…
Let C be a smooth irreducible projective curve defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ of q elements of characteristic p>3 and $K=\mathbb{F}_{q}(C)$ its function field and $ϕ_{\mathcal{E}}:\mathcal{E}\to C$ the minimal regular model of $\mathbf{E}/K$. For each $P\in C$ denote $\mathcal{E}_P=ϕ^{-1}_{\mathcal{E}}(P)$. The elliptic curve $E/K$ has good reduction at $P\in C$ if and only if $\mathcal{E}_P$ is an elliptic curve defined over the residue field $κ_P$ of $P$. This field is a finite extension of $\mathbb{F}_q$ of degree $°(P)$. Let $t(\mathcal{E}_P)=q^{°(P)}+1-#\mathcal{E}_P(κ_P)$ b…
This is an informal note that explains that the classical Langlands theory over function fields can be obtained from the geometric one by taking the trace of Frobenius. The operation of taking the trace of Frobenius takes place at the categorical level, and this we deduce that the space of automorphic functions is the trace of the Frobenius on the category of automorphic sheaves.
Let E and E' be two elliptic curves over a number field. We prove that the reductions of E and E' at a finite place p are geometrically isogenous for infinitely many p, and draw consequences for the existence of supersingular primes. This result is an analogue for distributions of Frobenius traces of known results on the density of Noether-Lefschetz loci in Hodge theory. The proof relies on dynamical properties of the Hecke correspondences on the modular curve.
We express the Frobenius-Hecke traces on the compactly supported cohomology of a Shimura variety of abelian type in terms of elliptic parts of stable Arthur-Selberg trace formulas for the endoscopic groups. This confirms predictions of Langlands and Kottwitz at primes where the level is hyperspecial.
We completely decide which minimal algebraic surfaces in positive characteristics allow a lifting of their Frobenius over the trucated witt rings of lengh 2.
Let X be a quasiprojective smooth surface defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. We show that if X is Frobenius split then so is the Hilbert scheme Hilb^n(X) of n points in X. In particular, we get the higher cohomology vanishing for ample line bundles on Hilb^n(X) when X is projective and Frobenius split.
In this article, a sequel to "Global Frobenius Liftability I" (math:1708:03777v2), we continue the development of a comprehensive theory of Frobenius liftings modulo $p^2$. We study compatibility of divisors and closed subschemes with Frobenius liftings, Frobenius liftings of blow-ups, descent under quotients by some group actions, stability under base change, and the properties of associated F-splittings. Consequently, we characterise Frobenius liftable surfaces and Fano threefolds, confirming the conjecture stated in our previous paper.

For a K3 surface over an algebraically closed field of odd characteristic, the representation of the automorphism group on the global two forms is finite. If the K3 surface is supersingular, it is isomorphic to the representation on the discriminant group of the Neron-Severi group. If the K3 surface is of finite height, the representation on the (etale or crystalline) transcendental cycles is also finite and there is a canonical projection from the representation on the transcendental cycles to the representation on the two forms. We prove that, if the base field is an algebraic closure of a f…
A standard observation in algebraic geometry and number theory is that a ramified cover of an algebraic variety $\widetilde{X}\rightarrow X$ over a finite field $F_q$ furnishes the rational points $x\in X(F_q)$ with additional arithmetic structure: the Frobenius action on the fiber over $x$. For example, in the case of the Vieta cover of polynomials over $F_q$ this structure describes a polynomial's irreducible decomposition type. Furthermore, the distribution of these Frobenius actions is encoded in the cohomology of $\widetilde{X}$ via the Grothendieck-Lefschetz trace formula. This note pres…
In this paper we give an upper bound on the number of rational points on an irreducible curve $C$ of degree $δ$ defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ lying on a Frobenius classical surface $S$ embedded in $\mathbb{P}^3$. This leads us to investigate arithmetic properties of curves lying on surfaces. In a certain range of $δ$ and $q$, our result improves all other known bounds in the context of space curves.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective surface over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p> 0$ with $Ω_{X}^{1}$ semistable and $μ(Ω_{X}^{1})>0$. For any semistable (resp. stable) bundle $W$ of rank $r$, we prove that $F_*W$ is semistable (resp. stable) when $p\geq r(r-1)^2+1$.
We prove that the Chow motives of twisted derived equivalent K3 surfaces are isomorphic, not only as Chow motives (due to Huybrechts), but also as Frobenius algebra objects. Combined with a recent result of Huybrechts, we conclude that two complex projective K3 surfaces are isogenous (i.e. their second rational cohomology groups are Hodge isometric) if and only if their Chow motives are isomorphic as Frobenius algebra objects; this can be regarded as a motivic Torelli-type theorem. We ask whether, more generally, twisted derived equivalent hyper-Kaehler varieties have isomorphic Chow motives a…
We give sufficient conditions for a Frobenius category to be equivalent to the category of Gorenstein projective modules over an Iwanaga-Gorenstein ring. We then apply this result to the Frobenius category of special Cohen-Macaulay modules over a rational surface singularity, where we show that the associated stable category is triangle equivalent to the singularity category of a certain discrepant partial resolution of the given rational singularity. In particular, this produces uncountably many Iwanaga-Gorenstein rings of finite GP type. We also apply our method to representation theory, obt…
Let X be a smooth projective curve of genus g>1 defined over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic p>0. Let M_X(r) be the moduli space of semi-stable rank r vector bundles with fixed trivial determinant. The relative Frobenius map F : X \to X_1 induces by pull-back a rational map V: M_{X_1}(r) \to M_X(r). We determine the equations of V in the following two cases (1) (g,r,p) = (2,2,2) and X non-ordinary with Hasse-Witt invariant equal to 1 (see math.AG/0005044 for the case X ordinary), and (2) (g,r,p) = (2,2,3). We also show, for any triple (g,r,p), the existence of base points of …
To any graded Frobenius algebra A we associate a sequence of graded Frobenius algebras A^[n] in such a way that for any smooth projective surface X with trivial canonical divisor there is a canonical isomorphism of rings between (H*X)^[n] and the cohomology H*(X^[n]) of the n-th Hilbert scheme of X.
The goal of this paper is to calculate the trace of the composition of a Hecke correspondence and a (high enough) power of the Frobenius at a good place on the intersection cohomology of the Satake-Baily-Borel compactification of certain Shimura varieties, to stabilize the result for Shimura varieties associated to unitary groups over $\mathbb{Q}$ and to give applications of this calculations using base change from these unitary groups to $GL_n$. ----- Le but de ce texte est de calculer la trace d'une correspondance de Hecke composee avec une puissance (assez grande) du Frobenius en une bonne …
Cubic surfaces in characteristic two are investigated from the point of view of prime characteristic commutative algebra. In particular, we prove that, the non-Frobenius split cubic surfaces form a linear subspace of codimension four in the 19-dimensional space of all cubics, and that up to projective equivalence, there are finitely many non-Frobenius split cubic surfaces. We explicitly describe defining equations for each and characterize them as extremal in terms of configurations of lines on them. In particular, a (possibly singular) cubic surface in characteristic two fails to be Frobenius…
Classical Serre-Tate theory describes deformations of ordinary abelian varieties. It implies that every such variety has a canonical lift to characteristic zero and equips its local moduli space with a Frobenius lifting and canonical multiplicative coordinates. A variant of this theory has been obtained for ordinary K3 surfaces by Nygaard and Ogus. In this paper, we construct canonical liftings modulo $p^2$ of varieties with trivial canonical class which are ordinary in the weak sense that the Frobenius acts bijectively on the top cohomology of the structure sheaf. Consequently, we obtain a Fr…
We review the role played by tau functions of special type - called {\it Bergman} tau functions in various areas: theory of isomonodromic deformations, solutions of Einstein's equations, theory of Dubrovin-Frobenius manifolds, geometry of moduli spaces and spectral theory of Riemann surfaces. These tau functions are natural generalizations of Dedekind's eta-function to higher genus. Study of their properties allows to get an explicit form of Einstein's metrics, obtain new relations in Picard groups of various moduli spaces and derive holomorphic factorization formulas of determinants of Laplac…
This paper describes how, in the case of algebraic surfaces, the well-known theorem of Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau can be proved in a framework of generalized 'multiplier ideal sheaves', following the ideas of Siu. The key concept is that the destabilizing sheaf satisfies a differential inclusion relation. This relation is used, together with a complex Frobenius theorem for locally finitely generated subsheaves, to imply coherence of the destabilizing subsheaf.
I conjecture that index formulas for $K$-theory classes on the moduli of holomorphic $G$-bundles over a compact Riemann surface $Σ$ are controlled, in a precise way, by Frobenius algebra deformations of the Verlinde algebra of $G$. The Frobenius algebras in question are twisted $K$-theories of $G$, equivariant under the conjugation action, and the controlling device is the equivariant Gysin map along the "product of commutators" from $G^{2g}$ to $G$. The conjecture is compatible with naive virtual localization of holomorphic bundles, from $G$ to its maximal torus; this follows by localization …
