We establish the existence and find some qualitative properties of open sets that minimize functionals of the form $ F(λ_1(Ω;β),\dots,λ_k(Ω;β))$ under measure constraint on $Ω$, where $λ_i(Ω;β)$ designates the $i$-th eigenvalue of the Laplace operator on $Ω$ with Robin boundary conditions of parameter $β>0$. Moreover, we show that minimizers of $λ_k(Ω;β)$ for $k\geq 2$ verify the conjecture $λ_k(Ω;β)=λ_{k-1}(Ω;β)$ in dimension three and more.
In this paper, we study the full regularity and well-posedness of classical solutions to the nonlinear unsteady Prandtl equations with Robin or Dirichlet boundary condition in half space. Under Oleinik's monotonicity assumption, we prove the large time existence of classical solutions to the nonlinear Prandtl equations with Robin or Dirichlet boundary condition, when both initial vorticity and the general Euler flow are sufficiently small. For the general Euler flow, the vertical velocity of the Prandtl flow is unbounded. We prove that the Prandtl solutions preserve the full regularities in ou…

We consider a non-autonomous Cauchy problem involving linear operators associated with time-dependent forms $a(t;.,.):V\times V\to {\mathbb{C}}$ where $V$ and $H$ are Hilbert spaces such that $V$ is continuously embedded in $H$. We prove $H$-maximal regularity under a new regularity condition on the form $a$ with respect to time; namely H{ö}lder continuity with values in an interpolation space. This result is best suited to treat Robin boundary conditions. The maximal regularity allows one to use fixed point arguments to some non linear parabolic problems with Robin boundary conditions.
For a linear, strictly elliptic second order differential operator in divergence form with bounded, measurable coefficients on a Lipschitz domain $Ω$ we show that solutions of the corresponding elliptic problem with Robin and thus in particular with Neumann boundary conditions are Hoelder continuous for sufficiently $L^p$-regular right-hand sides. From this we deduce that the parabolic problem with Robin or Wentzell-Robin boundary conditions are well-posed on $\mathrm{C}(\barΩ)$.
We formulate and study a variational two-phase free boundary problem with Robin condition on the interface between the two phases, and we prove existence and regularity of solutions in dimension two
In this paper, we consider the exact boundary controllability and the exact boundary synchronization (by groups) for a coupled system of wave equations with coupled Robin boundary controls. Owing to the difficulty coming from the lack of regularity of the solution, we confront a bigger challenge than that in the case with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary controls. In order to overcome this difficulty, we use the regularity results of solutions to the mixed problem with Neumann boundary conditions by Lasiecka and Triggiani to get the regularity of solutions to the mixed problem with coupled Robin …
In this paper, the existence of smooth positive solutions to a Robin boundary-value problem with non-homogeneous differential operator and reaction given by a nonlinear convection term plus a singular one is established. Proofs chiefly exploit sub-super-solution and truncation techniques, set-valued analysis, recursive methods, nonlinear regularity theory, as well as fixed point arguments. A uniqueness result is also presented.
We show that the incompressible 3D Navier-Stokes system in a C 1;1 bounded domain or a bounded convex domain with a non penetration condition u = 0 at the boundary @ together with a time-dependent Robin boundary condition of the type curl u = (t)u on @ admits a solution with enough regularity provided the initial condition is small enough in an appropriate functional space.
Let $n\ge2$ and $Ω$ be a bounded Lipschitz domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In this article, the authors investigate global (weighted) estimates for the gradient of solutions to Robin boundary value problems of second order elliptic equations of divergence form with real-valued, bounded, measurable coefficients in $Ω$. More precisely, let $p\in(n/(n-1),\infty)$. Using a real-variable argument, the authors obtain two necessary and sufficient conditions for $W^{1,p}$ estimates of solutions to Robin boundary value problems, respectively, in terms of a weak reverse Hölder inequality with exponent $p$ or …
We study for the first time a two-phase free boundary problem in which the solution satisfies a Robin boundary condition. We consider the case in which the solution is continuous across the free boundary and we prove an existence and a regularity result for minimizers of the associated variational problem. Finally, in the appendix, we give an example of a class of Steiner symmetric minimizers.
For smooth bounded open sets in euclidean space, we construct corresponding contractive linear extension operators for the space of continuous functions which preserve regularity of functions in the domain of the Robin Laplacian. We also prove a Trotter-like approximation for the semigroup generated by the Laplacian subject to Robin boundary conditions in terms of these extension operators. The limiting case of Dirichlet boundary conditions is treated separately.
In this paper we study some properties of the torsion function with Robin boundary conditions. Here we write the shape derivative of the $L^{\infty}$ and $L^p$ norms, for $p\ge 1$, of the torsion function, seen as a functional on a bounded simply connected open set $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, and prove that the balls are critical shapes for these functionals, when the volume of $Ω$ is preserved.
We prove two bounds for the first Robin eigenvalue of the Finsler Laplacian with negative boundary parameter in the planar case. In the constant area problem, we show that the Wulff shape is the maximizer only for values which are close to 0 of the boundary parameter and, in the fixed perimeter case, that the Wulff shape maximizes the first eigenvalue for all values of the parameter.
We study some properties of Laplacian eigenvalues with negative Robin boundary conditions. We will show some monotonicity properties on annuli of the first eigenvalue by means of shape optimization techniques.
We prove existence, uniqueness, and regularity for a reaction-diffusion system of coupled bulk-surface equations on a moving domain modelling receptor-ligand dynamics in cells. The nonlinear coupling between the three unknowns is through the Robin boundary condition for the bulk quantity and the right hand sides of the two surface equations. Our results are new even in the non-moving setting, and in this case we also show exponential convergence to a steady state. The primary complications in the analysis are indeed the nonlinear coupling and the Robin boundary condition. For the well posednes…
In this paper, we study the well-posedness of classical solutions to the nonlinear unsteady Prandtl equations with Robin boundary condition in half space in weighted Sobolev spaces. We firstly investigate the monotonic shear flow with Robin boundary condition and the linearized Prandtl-type equations with Robin boundary condition in weighted Sobolev spaces. Due to the degeneracy of the Prandtl equations and the loss of regularity, we apply the Nash-Moser-Hormander iteration scheme to prove the existence of classical solutions to the nonlinear Prandtl equations with Robin boundary condition whe…
We compute the sum and number of eigenvalues for a certain class of magnetic Schrodinger operators in a domain with boundary. Functions in the domain of the operator satisfy a (magnetic) Robin condition. The calculations are valid in the semi-classical asymptotic limit and the eigenvalues concerned correspond to eigenstates localized near the boundary of the domain. The formulas we derive display the influence of the boundary and the boundary condition and are valid under a weak regularity assumption of the boundary function. Our approach relies on three main points: reduction to the boundary;…
We prove the existence of an optimal partition for the multiphase shape optimization problem which consists in minimizing the sum of the first Robin Laplacian eigenvalue of $k$ mutually disjoint {\it open} sets which have a $\mathcal H ^ {d-1}$-countably rectifiable boundary and are contained into a given box $D$ in $R^d$
In this paper we revisit an approach pioneered by Auchmuty to approximate solutions of the Laplace- Robin boundary value problem. We demonstrate the efficacy of this approach on a large class of non-tensorial domains, in contrast with other spectral approaches for such problems. We establish a spectral approximation theorem showing an exponential fast numerical evaluation with regards to the number of Steklov eigenfunctions used, for smooth domains and smooth boundary data. A polynomial fast numerical evaluation is observed for either non-smooth domains or non-smooth boundary data. We addition…
We prove resolvent $L_p$ estimates and maximal $L_p$-$L_q$ regularity estimates for the Stokes equations with Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions in the half space. Each solution is constructed by a Fourier multiplier of $x'$-direction and an integral of $x_N$-direction. We decompose the solution such that the symbols of the Fourier multipliers are bounded and holomorphic. We see that the operator norms are dominated by a homogeneous function of order $-1$ for $x_N$-direction. The basis are Weis's operator-valued Fourier multiplier theorem and a boundedness of a kernel operator. W…
We prove a robustness of regularity result for the $3$D convective Brinkman-Forchheimer equations $$ \partial_tu -μΔu + (u \cdot \nabla)u + \nabla p + αu + β\abs{u}^{r - 1}u = f, $$ for the range of the absorption exponent $r \in [1, 3]$ (for $r > 3$ there exist global-in-time regular solutions), i.e. we show that strong solutions of these equations remain strong under small enough changes of the initial condition and forcing function. We provide a smallness condition which is similar to the robustness conditions given for the $3$D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations by Chernyshenko et al. …
In this paper, we study second-order and fourth-order elliptic problems which include not only a Poisson equation in the bulk but also an inhomogeneous Laplace--Beltrami equation on the boundary of the domain. The bulk and the surface PDE are coupled by a boundary condition that is either of Dirichlet or Robin type. We point out that both the Dirichlet and the Robin type boundary condition can be handled simultaneously through our formalism without having to change the framework. Moreover, we investigate the eigenvalue problems associated with these second-order and fourth-order elliptic syste…
For a class of quasilinear parabolic systems with nonlinear Robin boundary conditions we construct a compact local solution semiflow in a nonlinear phase space of high regularity. We further show that a priori estimates in lower norms are sufficient for the existence of a global attractor in this phase space. The approach relies on maximal $L_p$-regularity with temporal weights for the linearized problem. An inherent smoothing effect due to the weights is employed for gradient estimates. In several applications we can improve the convergence to an attractor by one regularity level.
We use novel integral representations developed by the second author to prove certain rigorous results concerning elliptic boundary value problems in convex polygons. Central to this approach is the so-called global relation, which is a non-local equation in the Fourier space that relates the known boundary data to the unknown boundary values. Assuming that the global relation is satisfied in the weakest possible sense, i.e. in a distributional sense, we prove there exist solutions to Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary value problems with distributional boundary data. We also show that the …
We prove some regularity results for a class of two dimensional non-Newtonian fluids. By applying results from [Dashti and Robinson, Nonlinearity, 22 (2009), 735-746] we can then show uniqueness of particle trajectories.
We consider a transmission problem on a polygonal partition for the two-dimensional conductivity equation. For suitable classes of partitions we establish the exact behaviour of the gradient of solutions in a neighbourhood of the vertexes of the partition. This allows to prove shape differentiability of solutions and to establish an explicit formula for the shape derivative.
Well-Posedness of the Cauchy Problem for One-Dimensional Nonlinear Diffusion Equations with Dynamic and Fourth-Type Boundary Conditions in the Lp Lq Maximal Regularity Setting
We consider electrodiffusion of ions in fluids, described by the Nernst-Planck-Navier-Stokes system, in three dimensional bounded domains, with mixed blocking (no-flux) and selective (Dirichlet) boundary conditions for the ionic concentrations and Robin boundary conditions for the electric potential, representing the presence of an electrical double layer. We prove global existence of strong solutions for large initial data in the case of two oppositely charged ionic species. The result hold unconditionally in the case where fluid flow is described by the Stokes equations. In the case of Navie…
In this paper we prove a $C^{1,α}$ regularity result in dimension two for almost-minimizers of the constrained one-phase Alt-Caffarelli and the two-phase Alt-Caffarelli-Friedman functionals for an energy with variable coefficients. As a consequence, we deduce the complete regularity of solutions of a multiphase shape optimization problem for the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet-Laplacian up to the fixed boundary. One of the main ingredient is a new application of the epiperimetric-inequality of Spolaor-Velichkov [CPAM, 2018] up to the boundary. While the framework that leads to this applicati…
We consider minimizers of \[ F(λ_1(Ω),\ldots,λ_N(Ω)) + |Ω|, \] where $F$ is a function strictly increasing in each parameter, and $λ_k(Ω)$ is the $k$-th Dirichlet eigenvalue of $Ω$. Our main result is that the reduced boundary of the minimizer is composed of $C^{1,α}$ graphs, and exhausts the topological boundary except for a set of Hausdorff dimension at most $n-3$. We also obtain a new regularity result for vector-valued Bernoulli type free boundary problems.
In this paper we present some very recent results regarding existence, uniqueness, and multiplicity of solutions for quasilinear elliptic equations and systems, exhibiting both singular and convective reaction terms. The importance of boundary conditions (Dirichlet, Neumann, or Robin) is also discussed. Existence is achieved via sub-supersolution and truncation techniques, fixed point theory, nonlinear regularity, and set-valued analysis, while uniqueness and multiplicity are obtained by monotonicity arguments.
We introduce Robin boundary conditions for biharmonic operators, which are a model for elastically supported plates and are closely related to the study of spaces of traces of Sobolev functions. We study the dependence of the operator, its eigenvalues, and eigenfunctions on the Robin parameters. We show in particular that when the parameters go to plus infinity the Robin problem converges to other biharmonic problems, and obtain estimates on the rate of divergence when the parameters go to minus infinity. We also analyse the dependence of the operator on smooth perturbations of the domain, com…
The first two eigenvalues of the Robin Laplacian are investigated along with their gap and ratio. Conjectures by various authors for arbitrary domains are supported here by new results for rectangular boxes. Results for rectangular domains include that: the square minimizes the first eigenvalue among rectangles under area normalization, when the Robin parameter $α\in \mathbb{R}$ is scaled by perimeter; that the square maximizes the second eigenvalue for a sharp range of $α$-values; that the line segment minimizes the Robin spectral gap under diameter normalization for each $α\in \mathbb{R}$; a…
