The classical Weyl problem (solved by Lewy, Alexandrov, Pogorelov, and others) asks whether any metric of curvature $K\geq 0$ on the sphere is induced on the boundary of a unique convex body in $\R^3$. The answer was extended to surfaces in hyperbolic space by Alexandrov in the 1950s, and a ``dual'' statement, describing convex bodies in terms of the third fundamental form of their boundary (e.g. their dihedral angles, for an ideal polyhedron) was later proved.
We describe three conjectural generalizations of the Weyl problem in $\HH^3$ and its dual to unbounded convex subsets and convex surfaces, in ways that are relevant to contemporary geometry since a number of recent results and well-known open problems can be considered as special cases. One focus is on convex domain having a ``thin'' asymptotic boundary, for instance a quasicircle -- this part of the problem is strongly related to the theory of Kleinian groups. A second direction is towards convex subsets with a ``thick'' ideal boundary, for instance a disjoint union of disks -- here one find connections to problems in complex analysis, such as the Koebe circle domain conjecture. A third direction is towards complete, convex disks of infinite area in $\HH^3$ and surfaces in hyperbolic ends -- with connections to questions on circle packings or grafting on the hyperbolic disk. Similar statements are proposed in anti-de Sitter geometry, a Lorentzian cousin of hyperbolic geometry where interesting new phenomena can occur, and in Minkowski and Half-pipe geometry. We also collect some partial new results mostly based on recent works.
We study the isometric spacelike embedding problem in scaled de Sitter space, and obtain Weyl-type estimates and the corresponding closedness in the space of embeddings.
We introduce a geometric transition between two homogeneous three-dimensional geometries: hyperbolic geometry and anti de Sitter (AdS) geometry. Given a path of three-dimensional hyperbolic structures that collapse down onto a hyperbolic plane, we describe a method for constructing a natural continuation of this path into AdS structures. In particular, when hyperbolic cone manifolds collapse, the AdS manifolds generated on the "other side" of the transition have tachyon singularities. The method involves the study of a new transitional geometry called half-pipe geometry. We demonstrate these m…
Let $Σ$ be a connected, oriented surface with punctures and negative Euler characteristic. We introduce wild globally hyperbolic anti-de Sitter structures on $Σ\times \mathbb{R}$ and provide two parameterisations of their deformation space: as a quotient of the product of two copies of the Teichmüller space of crowned hyperbolic surfaces and as the bundle over the Teichmüller space of $Σ$ of meromorphic quadratic differentials with poles of order at least $3$ at the punctures.
Let $Σ$ be a connected, oriented surface with punctures and negative Euler characteristic. We introduce regular globally hyperbolic anti-de Sitter structures on $Σ\times \mathbb{R}$ and provide two parameterisations of their deformation space: as an enhanced product of two copies of the Fricke space of $Σ$ and as the bundle over the Teichmüller space of $Σ$ whose fibre consists of meromorphic quadratic differentials with poles of order at most $2$ at the punctures.
We provide the first examples of geometric transition from hyperbolic to anti-de Sitter structures in dimension four, in a fashion similar to Danciger's three-dimensional examples. The main ingredient is a deformation of hyperbolic 4-polytopes, discovered by Kerckhoff and Storm, eventually collapsing to a 3-dimensional ideal cuboctahedron. We show the existence of a similar family of collapsing anti-de Sitter polytopes, and join the two deformations by means of an opportune half-pipe orbifold structure. The desired examples of geometric transition are then obtained by gluing copies of the poly…
We compute the differential geometric invariants of cuspidal edges on flat surfaces in hyperbolic $3$-space and in de Sitter space. Several dualities of invariants are pointed out.
In this paper, we determine the type numbers of the pseudo-hyperbolic Gauss maps of all oriented Lorentzian surfaces of constant mean and Gaussian curvatures and non-diagonalizable shape operator in the $3$-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. Also, we investigate the behavior of type numbers of the pseudo-hyperbolic Gauss map along the parallel family of such oriented Lorentzian surfaces in the $3$-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. Furthermore, we investigate the type number of the pseudo-hyperbolic Gauss map of one of Lorentzian hypersurfaces of B-scroll type in a general dimensional anti-de Si…
In this paper we describe trigonometry on the de Sitter surface. For that a characterization of geodesics is given, leading to various types of triangles. We define lengths and angles of these. Then, transferring the concept of polar triangles from spherical geometry into the Minkowski space, we relate hyperbolic with de Sitter triangles such that the proof of the hyperbolic law of cosines for angles becomes much clearer and easier than it is traditionally. Furthermore, polar triangles turn out to be a powerful tool for describing de Sitter trigonometry.
We show existence of constant mean curvature 1 surfaces in both hyperbolic 3-space and de Sitter 3-space with two complete embedded ends and any positive genus up to genus twenty. We also find another such family of surfaces in de Sitter 3-space, but with a different non-embedded end behavior.
Let $S$ be a closed oriented surface of genus at least $2$. Using the parameterisation of the deformation space of globally hyperbolic maximal anti-de Sitter structures on $S \times \mathbb{R}$ by the cotangent bundle over the Teichmüller space of $S$, we study the behaviour of these geometric structures along pinching sequences. We show, in particular, that the regular globally hyperbolic anti-de Sitter structures introduced in arXiv:1806.08176 naturally appear as limiting points.
We study the volume of maximal globally hyperbolic Anti-de Sitter manifolds containing a closed orientable Cauchy surface $S$, in relation to some geometric invariants depending only on the two points in Teichmüller space of $S$ provided by Mess' parameterization - namely on two isotopy classes of hyperbolic metrics $h$ and $h'$ on $S$. The main result of the paper is that the volume coarsely behaves like the minima of the $L^1$-energy of maps from $(S,h)$ to $(S,h')$. The study of $L^p$-type energies had been suggested by Thurston, in contrast with the well-studied Lipschitz distance. A corol…
In this paper we combine our recent work on regular globally hyperbolic maximal anti-de Sitter structures with the classical theory of globally hyperbolic maximal Cauchy-compact anti-de Sitter manifolds in order to define an augmented moduli space. Moreover, we introduce a coordinate system in this space that resembles the complex Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates for hyperbolic quasi-Fuchsian manifolds.
In a recent paper Jorge and Mercuri proved that the image of Gauss map of a complete non flat minimal surfaces in R3 with finite total curvature omits at most 2 points. In this work we follow their idea and prove 3a similar result for CMC-1 with finite total curvature in H and CMC-1 faces with finite type and regular ends in S31.
Let $M$ be a globally hyperbolic maximal compact $3$-dimensional spacetime locally modelled on Minkowski, anti-de Sitter or de Sitter space. It is well known that $M$ admits a unique foliation by constant mean curvature surfaces. In this paper we extend this result to singular spacetimes with particles (cone singularities of angles less than $π$ along time-like geodesics).
We construct minimal surfaces in hyperbolic and anti-de Sitter 3-space with the topology of a $n$-punctured sphere by loop group factorization methods. The end behavior of the surfaces is based on the asymptotics of Delaunay-type surfaces, i.e., rotational symmetric minimal cylinders. The minimal surfaces in $\mathrm{H}^3$ extend to Willmore surfaces in the conformal 3-sphere $\mathrm{S}^3=\mathrm{H}^3\cup\mathrm{S}^2\cup\mathrm{H}^3$.
We consider globally hyperbolic maximal anti de Sitter 3-manifolds $M$ with a closed Cauchy surface $S$ of genus greater than one and prove that any pair of hyperbolic metrics on $S$ can be realized as the boundary metrics of the convex core of a maximal globally hyperbolic anti de Sitter 3-manifold structure on $M$. This answers the existence part of a question of Mess about the unique realization of such metrics. Our theorem has a nice formulation purely in terms of 2-dimensional Teichmüller theory and earthquakes.
We consider a volume maximization program to construct hyperbolic structures on triangulated 3-manifolds, for which previous progress has lead to consider angle assignments which do not correspond to a hyperbolic metric on each simplex. We show that critical points of the generalized volume are associated to geometric structures modeled on the extended hyperbolic space -- the natural extension of hyperbolic space by the de Sitter space -- except for the degenerate case where all simplices are Euclidean in a generalized sense. Those extended hyperbolic structures can realize geometrically a dec…
In this paper, we discuss the isometric embedding problem in hyperbolic space with nonnegative extrinsic curvature. We prove a priori bounds for the trace of the second fundamental form H and extend the result to n-dimensions. We also obtain an estimate for the gradient of the smaller principal curvature in 2 dimensions.
In this paper, we study the regularity of asymptotically hyperbolic metrics with Einstein condition near boundary and Weyl curvature smooth enough in arbitrary dimension. Following Michael Anderson's method, we show that $C^{m,α}$ conformally compact Riemannian metrics with Einstein equation vanishing to finite order near boundary have conformal compactifications that are $C^{m+2,α}$ up to the boundary when Weyl curvature is in $C^{m,α}$ and the boundary metric is in $C^{m+2,α}$ where $m\geq 3.$
Starting from a real analytic conformal Cartan connection on a real analytic surface $S$, we construct a complex surface $T$ containing a family of pairs of projective lines. Using the structure on $S$ we also construct a complex $3$-space $Z$, such that $Z$ is a twistor space of a self-dual conformal $4$-fold and $T$ is a quotient of $Z$ by a holomorphic local $\mathbb{C}^*$ action. We prove that $T$ is a minitwistor space of an asymptotically hyperbolic Einstein-Weyl space with $S$ as an asymptotic boundary.
We consider contracting flows in $(n+1)$-dimensional hyperbolic space and expanding flows in $(n+1)$-dimensional de Sitter space. When the flow hypersurfaces are strictly convex we relate the contracting hypersurfaces and the expanding hypersurfaces by the Gauss map. The contracting hypersurfaces shrink to a point $x_0$ in finite time while the expanding hypersurfaces converge to the maximal slice $\{ τ=0\}$. After rescaling, by the same scale factor, the resclaed contracting hypersurfaces converge to a unit geodesic sphere, while the rescaled expanding hypersufaces converge to slice $\{ τ= -1…
We show that a properly convex projective structure $\mathfrak{p}$ on a closed oriented surface of negative Euler characteristic arises from a Weyl connection if and only if $\mathfrak{p}$ is hyperbolic. We phrase the problem as a non-linear PDE for a Beltrami differential by using that $\mathfrak{p}$ admits a compatible Weyl connection if and only if a certain holomorphic curve exists. Turning this non-linear PDE into a transport equation, we obtain our result by applying methods from geometric inverse problems. In particular, we use an extension of a remarkable $L^2$-energy identity known as…
Let $λ_-$ and $λ_+$ be two bounded measured laminations on the hyperbolic disk $\mathbb H^2$, which "strongly fill" (definition below). We consider the left earthquakes along $λ_-$ and $λ_+$, considered as maps from the universal Teichmüller space $\mathcal T$ to itself, and we prove that the composition of those left earthquakes has a fixed point. The proof uses anti-de Sitter geometry. Given a quasi-symmetric homeomorphism $u:{\mathbb RP}^1\to {\mathbb RP}^1$, the boundary of the convex hull in $AdS^3$ of its graph in ${\mathbb RP}^1\times{\mathbb RP}^1\simeq \partial AdS^3$ is the disjoint …
A survey on the recent work of Danciger, Guéritaud and Kassel on Margulis space-times and complete anti-de Sitter space-times. Margulis space-times are quotients of the 3-dimensional Minkowski space by (non-abelian) free groups acting propertly discontinuously. Goldman, Labourie and Margulis have shown that they are determined by a convex co-compact hyperbolic surface $S$ along with a first-order deformation of the metric which uniformly decreases the lengths of closed geodesics. Danciger, Guéritaud and Kassel show that those space-times are principal $\mathbb R$-bundles over $S$ with time-lik…
It is shown that timelike surfaces of constant mean curvature 1 in anti-de Sitter 3-space can be constructed from a pair of Lorentz holomorphic and Lorentz antiholomorphic null curves in PSL(2,R) via Bryant type representation formulae. These formulae are used to investigate an explicit one-to-one correspondence, the so-called Lawson correspondence, between timelike surfaces of constant mean curvature 1 in anti-de Sitter 3-space and timelike minimal surfaces in Minkowski 3-space. The hyperbolic Gauss map of timelike surfaces in anti-de Sitter 3-space, which is a close analogue of the classical…
We prove the existence of a unique maximal surface in each anti-de Sitter (AdS) convex Globally Hyperbolic Maximal (GHM) manifold with particles (that is, with conical singularities along time-like lines) for cone angles less than $π$. We interpret this result in terms of Teichmüller theory, and prove the existence of a unique minimal Lagrangian diffeomorphism isotopic to the identity between two hyperbolic surfaces with cone singularities when the cone angles are the same for both surfaces and are less than $π$.
We give a mathematical foundation for, and numerical demonstration of, the existence of mean curvature 1 surfaces of genus 1 with either two elliptic ends or two hyperbolic ends in de Sitter 3-space. An end of a mean curvature 1 surface is an ``elliptic end'' (resp. a ``hyperbolic end'') if the monodromy matrix at the end is diagonalizable with eigenvalues in the unit circle (resp. in the reals). Although the existence of the surfaces is numerical, the types of ends are mathematically determined.
We prove that any weakly acausal curve $Γ$ in the boundary of Anti-de Sitter (2+1)-space is the asymptotic boundary of two spacelike $K$-surfaces, one of which is past-convex and the other future-convex, for every $K\in(-\infty,-1)$. The curve $Γ$ is the graph of a quasisymmetric homeomorphism of the circle if and only if the $K$-surfaces have bounded principal curvatures. Moreover in this case a uniqueness result holds. The proofs rely on a well-known correspondence between spacelike surfaces in Anti-de Sitter space and area-preserving diffeomorphisms of the hyperbolic plane. In fact, an impo…
We prove that any hyperbolic end with particles (cone singularities along infinite curves of angles less than $π$) admits a unique foliation by constant Gauss curvature surfaces. Using a form of duality between hyperbolic ends with particles and convex globally hyperbolic maximal (GHM) de Sitter spacetime with particles, it follows that any convex GHM de Sitter spacetime with particles also admits a unique foliation by constant Gauss curvature surfaces. We prove that the grafting map from the product of Teichmüller space with the space of measured laminations to the space of complex projective…
We consider the Anti-de Sitter space $\mathbb{H}^3_1$ equipped with Berger-like metrics, that deform the standard metric of $\mathbb{H}^3_1$ in the direction of the hyperbolic Hopf vector field. Helix surfaces are the ones forming a constant angle with such vector field. After proving that these surfaces have (any) constant Gaussian curvature, we achieve their explicit local description in terms of a one-parameter family of isometries of the space and some suitable curves. These curves turn out to be general helices, which meet at a constant angle the fibers of the hyperbolic Hopf fibration.
We consider the complex hyperbolic quadric ${Q^*}^n$ as a complex hypersurface of complex anti-de Sitter space. Shape operators of this submanifold give rise to a family of local almost product structures on ${Q^*}^n$, which are then used to define local angle functions on any Lagrangian submanifold of ${Q^*}^n$. We prove that a Lagrangian immersion into ${Q^*}^n$ can be seen as the Gauss map of a spacelike hypersurface of (real) anti-de Sitter space and relate the angle functions to the principal curvatures of this hypersurface. We also give a formula relating the mean curvature of the Lagran…
We show that for a very general and natural class of curvature functions (for example the curvature quotients $(σ_n/σ_l)^{\frac{1}{n-l}}$) the problem of finding a complete spacelike strictly convex hypersurface in de Sitter space satisfying $f(κ) = σ\in (1,\infty)$ with a prescribed compact future asymptotic boundary $Γ$ at infinity has at least one smooth solution (if l = 1 or l = 2 there is uniqueness). This is the exact analogue of the asymptotic plateau problem in Hyperbolic space and is in fact a precise dual problem. By using this duality we obtain for free the existence of strictly con…
A geometrical correspondence between maximal surfaces in anti-De Sitter space-time and minimal surfaces in the Riemannian product of the hyperbolic plane and the real line is established. New examples of maximal surfaces in anti-De Sitter space-time are obtained in order to illustrate this correspondence.
We show that any metric on $S^2$ with Gauss curvature $K \geq -κ$ admits a $C^{1,1}$-isometric embedding into the hyperbolic space with sectional curvature $-κ$. We also give a sufficient condition for a metric on $S^2$ to be isometrically embedded into anti-de Sitter spacetime with the prescribed cosmological time function.
We establish a type of positive energy theorem for asymptotically anti-de Sitter Einstein-Maxwell initial data sets by using Witten's spinoral techniques.
In this paper, we prove the existence of maximal slices in anti-de Sitter spaces (ADS spaces) with small boundary data at spatial infinity. The main arguments is implicit function theorem. We also get a necessary and sufficient condition for boundary behavior of totally geodesic slice in ADS space. Moreover, we show that any isometric and maximal embedding of hyperbolic spaces into ADS space must be totally geodesic. Together with this, we see that most of maximal slices we get in this paper are not isometric to hyperbolic spaces, which implies that the Bernstein Theorem in ADS space fails.
Let $Γ$ be a discrete group acting properly discontinuously and isometrically on the three-dimensional anti-de Sitter space $\mathrm{AdS}^{3}$, and $\square$ the Laplacian which is a second-order hyperbolic differential operator. We study linear independence of a family of generalized Poincaré series introduced by Kassel-Kobayashi [Adv. Math. 287 (2016), 123-236, arXiv:1209.4075], which are defined by the $Γ$-average of certain eigenfunctions on $\mathrm{AdS}^{3}$. We prove that the multiplicities of $L^{2}$-eigenvalues of the hyperbolic Laplacian $\square$ on $Γ\backslash\mathrm{AdS}^{3}…
We study an asymptotic Dirichlet problem for Weyl structures on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. By the bulk-boundary correspondence, or more precisely by the Fefferman-Graham theorem on Poincaré metrics, this leads to a natural extension of the notion of Branson's $Q$-curvature to Weyl structures on even-dimensional conformal manifolds.
This paper proves a positive energy-momentum theorem for oriented Riemannian 3-manifolds that are asymptotic to a standard hyperbolic slice in anti de Sitter space-time. Analogously to the original Witten's proof in the asymptotically flat case, this result relies on spinorial methods. We also give a rigidity theorem: if the energy-momentum is degenerate (in a certain sense) then our 3-manifold can be isometrically embedded in anti de Sitter.
In this paper we consider the geometric behavior near infinity of some Einstein manifolds $(X^n, g)$ with Weyl curvature belonging to a certain $L^p$ space. Namely, we show that if $(X^n, g)$, $n \geq 7$, admits an essential set and has its Weyl curvature in $L^p$ for some $1<p<\frac{n-1}{2}$, then $(X^n, g)$ must be asymptotically locally hyperbolic. One interesting application of this theorem is to show a rigidity result for the hyperbolic space under an integral condition for the curvature.
Starting from a real analytic surface $\mathcal{M}$ with a real analytic conformal Cartan connection A. Borówka constructed a minitwistor space of an asymptotically hyperbolic Einstein-Weyl manifold with $\mathcal{M}$ being the boundary. In this article, starting from a symmetry of conformal Cartan connection, we prove that symmetries of conformal Cartan connection on $\mathcal{M}$ can be extended to symmetries of the obtained Einstein-Weyl manifold.
Let $S$ be a closed surface of hyperbolic type. We show that, for every pair $(g_+,g_-)$ of negatively curved metrics over $S$ there exists a unique GHMC Minkowski spacetime $X$ into which $(S,g_+)$ and $(S,g_-)$ isometrically embed as Cauchy surfaces in the future and past components respectively.
