We consider the complex hyperbolic quadric ${Q^*}^n$ as a complex hypersurface of complex anti-de Sitter space. Shape operators of this submanifold give rise to a family of local almost product structures on ${Q^*}^n$, which are then used to define local angle functions on any Lagrangian submanifold of ${Q^*}^n$. We prove that a Lagrangian immersion into ${Q^*}^n$ can be seen as the Gauss map of a spacelike hypersurface of (real) anti-de Sitter space and relate the angle functions to the principal curvatures of this hypersurface. We also give a formula relating the mean curvature of the Lagrangian immersion to these principal curvatures. The theorems are illustrated with several examples of spacelike hypersurfaces of anti-de Sitter space and their Gauss maps. Finally, we classify some families of minimal Lagrangian submanifolds of ${Q^*}^n$: those with parallel second fundamental form and those for which the induced sectional curvature is constant. In both cases, the Lagrangian submanifold is forced to be totally geodesic.
In this article, relations between the root space decomposition of a Riemannian symmetric space of compact type and the root space decompositions of its totally geodesic submanifolds (symmetric subspaces) are described. These relations provide an approach to the classification of totally geodesic submanifolds in Riemannian symmetric spaces. In this way a classification of the totally geodesic submanifolds in the complex quadric $Q^m := \SO(m+2)/(\SO(2) \times \SO(m))$ is obtained. It turns out that the earlier classification of totally geodesic submanifolds of $Q^m$ by Chen and Nagano is incom…
The Gauss map of a hypersurface of a unit sphere $S^{n+1}(1)$ is a Lagrangian immersion into the complex quadric $Q^n$ and, conversely, every Lagrangian submanifold of $Q^n$ is locally the image under the Gauss map of several hypersurfaces of $S^{n+1}(1)$. In this paper, we give explicit constructions for these correspondences and we prove a relation between the principal curvatures of a hypersurface of $S^{n+1}(1)$ and the local angle functions of the corresponding Lagrangian submanifold of $Q^n$. The existence of such a relation is remarkable since the definition of the angle functions depen…
We introduce the notion of Reeb parallel structure Jacobi operator for real hypersurfaces in the complex hyperbolic quadric ${Q^*}^m=SO^0_{2,m}/SO_2 SO_m$, $m \geq 3$, and give a classification theory for real hypersurfaces in ${{Q^*}^m}$, $m \geq 3$, with Reeb parallel structure Jacobi operator.
We classify real hypersurfaces with isometric Reeb flow in the complex hyperbolic quadrics ${Q^*}^{m} = SO^{o}_{2,m}/SO_mSO_2$, $m \geq 3$. We show that $m$ is even, say $m = 2k$, and any such hypersurface becomes an open part of a tube around a $k$-dimensional complex hyperbolic space ${\mathbb C}H^k$ which is embedded canonically in ${Q^*}^{2k}$ as a totally geodesic complex submanifold or a horosphere whose center at infinity is $\frak A$-isotropic singular. As a consequence of the result, we get the non-existence of real hypersurfaces with isometric Reeb flow in odd-dimensional complex qua…
We use the Cartan representations of $SO(3)$ and $SU(3)$, and an irreducible 14-dimensional representation of $Sp(3)$ to construct certain totally geodesic submanifolds in "skew" position in the complex quadrics, the complex 2-Grassmannians and the quaternionic 2-Grassmannians.
We give a new proof of the classification of contact real hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature in the complex hyperbolic quadric ${Q^m}^* = SO_{m,2}^o/SO_mSO_2$, where $m\geq 3$. We show that a contact real hypersurface $M$ in ${Q^m}^*$ for $m\geq 3$ is locally congruent to a tube of radius $r{\in}{\mathbb R}^+$ around the complex hyperbolic quadric ${Q^{m-1}}^*$, or to a tube of radius $r\in\mathbb{R}^+$ around the $\mathfrak A$-principal $m$-dimensional real hyperbolic space ${\mathbb R}H^m$ in ${Q^m}^* = SO_{m,2}^o/SO_mSO_2$, or to a horosphere in ${Q^{m-1}}^*$ induced by a class of $…
We classify real hypersurfaces with isometric Reeb flow in the complex quadrics Q^m for m > 2. We show that m is even, say m = 2k, and any such hypersurface is an open part of a tube around a k-dimensional complex projective space CP^k which is embedded canonically in Q^{2k} as a totally geodesic complex submanifold. As a consequence we get the non-existence of real hypersurfaces with isometric Reeb flow in odd-dimensional complex quadrics.
This paper deals with a limiting case motivated by contact geometry. The limiting case of a tensorial characterization of contact hypersurfaces in Kahler manifolds leads to Hopf hypersurfaces whose maximal complex subbundle of the tangent bundle is integrable. It is known that in non-flat complex space forms and in complex quadrics such real hypersurfaces do not exist, but the existence problem in other irreducible Kahler manifolds is open. In this paper we construct explicitly a one-parameter family of homogeneous Hopf hypersurfaces, whose maximal complex subbundle of the tangent bundle is in…
We classify homogeneous CR submanifolds in complex hyperbolic spaces arising as orbits of a subgroup of the solvable part of the Iwasawa decomposition of the isometry group of the ambient space.
We prove that if an $n$-dimensional complete minimal submanifold $M$ in hyperbolic space has sufficiently small total scalar curvature then $M$ has only one end. We also prove that for such $M$ there exist no nontrivial $L^2$ harmonic 1-forms on $M$.
In this paper, we prove the nonexistence of $L^2$ harmonic 1-forms on a complete super stable minimal submanifold $M$ in hyperbolic space under the assumption that the first eigenvalue $λ_1 (M)$ for the Laplace operator on $M$ is bounded below by $(2n-1)(n-1)$. Moreover, we provide sufficient conditions for minimal submanifolds in hyperbolic space to be super stable.
We study the topology of Hamiltonian-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds N in C^m constructed from intersections of real quadrics in a work of the first author. This construction is linked via an embedding criterion to the well-known Delzant construction of Hamiltonian toric manifolds. We establish the following topological properties of N: every N embeds as a submanifold in the corresponding moment-angle manifold Z, and every N is the total space of two different fibrations, one over the torus T^{m-n} with fibre a real moment-angle manifold R, and another over a quotient of R by a finite group wi…
We investigate complete minimal submanifolds $f\colon M^3\to\Hy^n$ in hyperbolic space with index of relative nullity at least one at any point. The case when the ambient space is either the Euclidean space or the round sphere was already studied in \cite{dksv1} and \cite{dksv2}, respectively. If the scalar curvature is bounded from below we conclude that the submanifold has to be either totally geodesic or a generalized cone over a complete minimal surface lying in an equidistant submanifold of $\Hy^n$.
We propose a general procedure to construct noncommutative deformations of an algebraic submanifold $M$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$, specializing the procedure [G. Fiore, T. Weber, Twisted submanifolds of $\mathbb{R}^n$, arXiv:2003.03854] valid for smooth submanifolds. We use the framework of twisted differential geometry of Aschieri et al. (Class. Quantum Grav. 23, 1883-1911, 2006), whereby the commutative pointwise product is replaced by the $\star$-product determined by a Drinfel'd twist. We actually simultaneously construct noncommutative deformations of all the algebraic submanifolds $M_c$ that are…
This is the second in a series of papers constructing explicit examples of special Lagrangian submanifolds in C^m. The first paper was math.DG/0008021, which studied special Lagrangian m-folds with large symmetry groups. The third is math.DG/0010036, which uses ideas from this paper to construct families of special Lagrangian 3-folds in C^3. This paper describes a construction of special Lagrangian m-folds in C^m which are fibred by (m-1)-submanifolds which are quadrics in Lagrangian planes R^m in C^m. Generically they have only discrete symmetry groups. Some of our examples have been previous…
In this paper we establish conditions on the length of the second fundamental form of a complete minimal submanifold $M^n$ in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{n+m}$ in order to show that $M^n$ is totally geodesic. We also obtain sharp upper bounds estimates for the first eigenvalue of the super stability operator in the case of $M$ is a surface in $\mathbb{H}^{4}$.
In this paper we construct new examples of minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in the complex hyperbolic space with large symmetry groups, obtaining three 1-parameter families with cohomegeneity one. We characterize them as the only minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in CH^n foliated by umbilical hypersurfaces of Lagrangian subspaces RH^n of CH^n. Several suitable generalizations of the above construction allow us to get new families of minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in CH^n from curves in CH^1 and (n-1)-dimensional minimal Lagrangian submanifolds of the complex space forms CP^n-1, CH^n-1 and C^n-1.…
Minimal Submanifolds of The Complex and Quaternionic Projective and Hyperbolic Spaces $\cn P^{2n-1}$, $\hn P^{2n-1}$, $\cn H^{2n-1}$, $\hn H^{2n-1}$ via Harmonic Morphisms
We present several local and global results on isometric immersions of Kaehler manifolds $M^{2n}$ into hyperbolic space $\Hy^{2n+p}$. For instance, a classification is given in the case of dimension $n\geq 4$ and codimension $p=2$. Moreover, as corollaries of general results, we conclude that there are no isometric immersion in codimension $p\leq n-2$ if the Kaehler manifold is of dimension $n\geq 4$ and either has a point of positive holomorphic sectional curvature or is compact.
Let $Σ$ be a $k$-dimensional complete proper minimal submanifold in the Poincaré ball model $B^n$ of hyperbolic geometry. If we consider $Σ$ as a subset of the unit ball $B^n$ in Euclidean space, we can measure the Euclidean volumes of the given minimal submanifold $Σ$ and the ideal boundary $\partial_\infty Σ$, say $\rvol(Σ)$ and $\rvol(\partial_\infty Σ)$, respectively. Using this concept, we prove an optimal linear isoperimetric inequality. We also prove that if $\rvol(\partial_\infty Σ) \geq \rvol(\mathbb{S}^{k-1})$, then $Σ$ satisfies the classical isoperimetric inequality. By proving the…
Wintgen ideal submanifolds in space forms are those ones attaining equality pointwise in the so-called DDVV inequality which relates the scalar curvature, the mean curvature and the scalar normal curvature. Using the framework of Moebius geometry, we show that in the codimension two case, the mean curvature sphere of the Wintgen ideal submanifold corresponds to an 1-isotropic holomorphic curve in a complex quadric Q. Conversely, any 1-isotropic complex curve in Q describes a 2-parameter family of m-dimensional spheres whose envelope is always a m-dimensional Wintgen ideal submanifold at the re…
We show that an isoparametric submanifold of a complex hyperbolic plane, according to the definition of Heintze, Liu and Olmos', is an open part of a principal orbit of a polar action. We also show that there exists a non-isoparametric submanifold of the complex hyperbolic plane that is isoparametric according to the definition of Terng's. Finally, we classify Terng-isoparametric submanifolds of two-dimensional complex space forms.
In this paper, we prove that if the initial submanifold $M_0$ of dimension $n(\ge6)$ satisfies an optimal pinching condition, then the mean curvature flow of arbitrary codimension in hyperbolic spaces converges to a round point in finite time. In particular, we obtain the optimal differentiable sphere theorem for submanifolds in hyperbolic spaces. It should be emphasized that our pinching condition implies that the Ricci curvature of the initial submanifold is positive, but does not imply positivity of the sectional curvature of $M_0$.
We give a set of sufficient and necessary conditions for parabolicity and hyperbolicity of a submanifold with controlled mean curvature in a Riemannian manifold with a pole and with sectional curvatures bounded from above or from below.
In this paper we investigate the convergence for the mean curvature flow of closed submanifolds with arbitrary codimension in space forms. Particularly, we prove that the mean curvature flow deforms a closed submanifold satisfying a pinching condition in a hyperbolic space form to a round point in finite time.
We use drifted Brownian motion in warped product model spaces as comparison constructions to show $p$-hyperbolicity of a large class of submanifolds for $p\ge 2$. The condition for $p$-hyperbolicity is expressed in terms of upper support functions for the radial sectional curvatures of the ambient space and for the radial convexity of the submanifold. In the process of showing $p$-hyperbolicity we also obtain explicit lower bounds on the $p$-capacity of finite annular domains of the submanifolds in terms of the drifted 2-capacity of the corresponding annuli in the respective comparison spaces.
We use techniques based on the splitting tensor to explicitly integrate the Codazzi equation along the relative nullity distribution and express the second fundamental form in terms of the Jacobi tensor of the ambient space. This approach allows us to easily recover several important results in the literature on complete submanifolds with relative nullity of the sphere as well as derive new strong consequences in hyperbolic and Euclidean spaces. Among the consequences of our main theorem are results on submanifolds with sufficiently high index of relative nullity, submanifolds with nonpositive…
Using Legendrian immersions and, in particular, Legendre curves in odd dimensional spheres and anti De Sitter spaces, we provide a method of construction of new examples of Hamiltonian-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in complex projective and hyperbolic spaces, including explicit one parameter families of embeddings of quotients of certain product manifolds. In addition, new examples of minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in complex projective and hyperbolic spaces also appear. Making use of all of them, we get Hamiltonian-minimal and special Lagrangian cones in complex Euclidean space too.
The first part of this article is devoted to the study families of totally real intersecting $n$-submanifolds of $(\Bbb C^n,0)$. We give some conditions which allow to straighten holomorphically the family. If this is not possible to do it formally, we construct a germ of complex analytic set at the origin which interesection with the family can be holomorphically staightened. The second part is devoted to the study real analytic $(n+r)$-submanifolds of $(\Bbb C^n,0)$ having a CR-singularity at the origin ($r$ is a nonnegative integer). We consider deformations of quadrics and we define genera…
In hyperbolic space $H^n$ we set a geodesic ball of radius $ρ$. Consider a $k$ dimensional minimal submanifold passing through the origin of the geodesic ball with boundary lies on the boundary of that geodesic ball. We prove that its area is no less than the totally geodesic $k$ dimensional submanifold passing through the origin in that geodesic ball. This is a partial generalization of the corresponding problem in $R^n$.
Motivated by spectral asymptotics for orbital integrals in a relative trace formula, we generalize a number of geometric properties of geodesics in the hyperbolic plane, to maximal flat submanifolds of symmetric spaces of non-compact type.
Hamiltonian minimality (H-minimality) for Lagrangian submanifolds is a symplectic analogue of Riemannian minimality. A Lagrangian submanifold is called H-minimal if the variations of its volume along all Hamiltonian vector fields are zero. This notion was introduced in the work of Y.-G. Oh in connection with the celebrated Arnold conjecture on the number of fixed points of a Hamiltonian symplectomorphism. In the previous works the authors defined and studied a family of H-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in complex space arising from intersections of Hermitian quadrics. Here we extend this cons…
Given a complete isometric immersion $ϕ: P^m \longrightarrow N^n$ in an ambient Riemannian manifold $N^n$ with a pole and with radial sectional curvatures bounded from above by the corresponding radial sectional curvatures of a radially symmetric space $M^n_w$, we determine a set of conditions on the extrinsic curvatures of $P$ that guarantees that the immersion is proper and that $P$ has finite topology, in the line of the paper "On Submanifolds With Tamed Second Fundamental Form", (Glasgow Mathematical Journal, 51, 2009), authored by G. Pacelli Bessa and M. Silvana Costa. When the ambient ma…
We describe several families of Lagrangian submanifolds in the complex Euclidean space which are H-minimal, i.e. critical points of the volume functional restricted to Hamiltonian variations. We make use of various constructions involving planar, spherical and hyperbolic curves, as well as Legendrian submanifolds of the odd-dimensional unit sphere.
Let H be the hyperbolic space of dimension n+1. A geodesic foliation of H is given by a smooth unit vector field on H all of whose integral curves are geodesics. Each geodesic foliation of H determines an n-dimensional submanifold M of the 2n-dimensional manifold L of all the oriented geodesics of H (up to orientation preserving reparametrizations). The space L has a canonical split semi-Riemannian metric induced by the Killing form of the isometry group of H. Using a split special Lagrangian calibration, we study the volume maximization problem for a certain class of geometrically distinguish…
Motivated by Gray's work on tube formulae for complex submanifolds of complex projective space equipped with the Fubini-Study metric, Riemannian foliations of projective space are studied. We prove that there are no complex Riemannian foliations of any open subset of $\mathbb{P}^n$ of codimension one. As a consequence there is no Riemannian foliation of the projective plane by Riemann surfaces, even locally. We determine how a complex submanifold may arise as an exceptional leaf of a non-trivial singular Riemannian foliation of maximal dimension. Gray's tube formula is applied to obtain a volu…
In this paper, we investigate submanifolds with locally bounded mean curvature in Hadamard manifolds, product manifolds $N\times\mathbb{R}$, submanifolds with bounded $φ$-mean curvature in the hyperbolic space, and successfully give lower bounds for the weighted fundamental tone and the first eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian.
A submanifold in space forms satisfies the well-known DDVV inequality due to De Smet, Dillen, Verstraelen and Vrancken. The submanifold attaining equality in the DDVV inequality at every point is called Wintgen ideal submanifold. As conformal invariant objects, Wintgen ideal submanifolds are studied in this paper using the framework of Möbius geometry. We classify Wintgen ideal submanfiolds of dimension $m>2$ and arbitrary codimension when a canonically defined 2-dimensional distribution $\mathbb{D}$ is integrable. Such examples come from cones, cylinders, or rotational submanifolds over super…
We prove a sharp area estimate for minimal submanifolds that pass through a prescribed point in a geodesic ball in hyperbolic space, in any dimension and codimension. In certain cases, we also prove the corresponding estimate in the sphere. Our estimates are analogous to those of Brendle and Hung in the Euclidean setting.
This note introduces a notion of entropy for submanifolds of hyperbolic space analogous to the one introduced by Colding and Minicozzi for submanifolds of Euclidean space. Several properties are proved for this quantity including monotonicity along mean curvature flow in low dimensions and a connection with the conformal volume.
