Classical Hamiltonian mechanics is realized by the action of a Poisson bracket on a Hamiltonian function. The Hamiltonian function is a constant of motion (the energy) of the system. The properties of the Poisson bracket are encapsulated in the symplectic 2-form, a closed second order differential form. Due to closure, the symplectic 2-form is preserved by the Hamiltonian flow, and it assigns an invariant (Liouville) measure on the phase space through the Lie-Darboux theorem. In this paper we propose a generalization of classical Hamiltonian mechanics to a three-dimensional phase space: the classical Poisson bracket is replaced with a generalized Poisson bracket acting on a pair of Hamiltonian functions, while the symplectic 2-form is replaced by a symplectic 3-form. We show that, using the closure of the symplectic 3-form, a result analogous to the classical Lie-Darboux theorem holds: locally, there exist smooth coordinates such that the components of the symplectic 3-form are constants, and the phase space is endowed with a preserved volume element. Furthermore, as in the classical theory, the Jacobi identity for the generalized Poisson bracket mathematically expresses the closure of the associated symplectic form. As a consequence, constant skew-symmetric third order contravariant tensors always define generalized Poisson brackets. This is in contrast with generalizations of Hamiltonian mechanics postulating the fundamental identity as replacement for the Jacobi identity. In particular, we find that the fundamental identity represents a stronger requirement than the closure of the symplectic 3-form.
In this paper, we derive a "hamiltonian formalism" for a wide class of mechanical systems, including classical hamiltonian systems, nonholonomic systems, some classes of servomechanism... This construction strongly relies in the geometry characterizing the different systems. In particular, we obtain that the class of the so-called algebroids covers a great variety of mechanical systems. Finally, as the main result, a hamiltonian symplectic realization of systems defined on algebroids is obtained.
Non-autonomous non-relativistic mechanics is formulated as Lagrangian and Hamiltonian theory on fibre bundles over the time axis R. Hamiltonian mechanics herewith can be reformulated as particular Lagrangian theory on a momentum phase space. This facts enable one to apply Noether's first theorem both to Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics. By virtue of Noether's first theorem, any symmetry defines a symmetry current which is an integral of motion in Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics. The converse is not true in Lagrangian mechanics where integrals of motion need not come from symmetries. W…
In Hamiltonian time-dependent mechanics, the Poisson bracket does not define dynamic equations, that implies the corresponding peculiarities of describing time-dependent holonomic constraints. As in conservative mechanics, one can consider the Poisson bracket of constraints, separate them in first and second class constraints, construct the Koszul-Tate resolution and a BRST complex. However, the Poisson bracket of constraints and a Hamiltonian makes no sense. Hamiltonian vector fields for first class constraints are not generators of gauge transformations. In the case of Lagrangian constraints…
The goal of this study is to present quaternion Kaehler analogue of Hamiltonian mechanics. Finally, the some results related to quaternion Kaehler dynamical systems were also given.
This study introduces standard Cliffordian Kaehler analogue of Hamiltonian mechanic systems. In the end, the some results related to standard Cliffordian Kaehler dynamical systems are also discussed.
In this paper, we present a relation between Jacobi-Reeb dynamics and the dynamics associated with a mechanical Hamiltonian system with respect to a linear Poisson structure on a vector bundle. For this purpose, we will use the so-called Jacobi bundle metrics induced by the mechanical Hamiltonian system. These constructions extend classical results on the relation between standard mechanical Hamiltonian systems on cotangent bundles and Reeb dynamics.
We consider a general approach to the theory of continuous media starting from Lagrangian formalism. This formalism which uses the trajectories if constituents of media is very convenient for taking into account different types of interaction between particles typical for different media. Building the Hamiltonian formalism we discuss some issues which is not very well known, such as relation of famous Thompson theorem with the symmetry with respect to volume preserving diffeomorphisms. We also discuss the relation between Euler and Lagrange description and present similar to Euler $C^2$ formul…
Jacobi fields of classical solutions of a Hamiltonian mechanical system are quantized in the framework of vertical-extended Hamiltonian formalism. Quantum Jacobi fields characterize quantum transitions between classical solutions.
Time dependent quadratic Hamiltonians are well known as well in classical mechanics and in quantum mechanics. In particular for them the correspondance between classical and quantum mechanics is exact. But explicit formulas are non trivial (like the Mehler formula). Moreover, a good knowlege of quadratic Hamiltonians is very useful in the study of more general quantum Hamiltonians and associated Schrödinger equations in the semiclassical regime. Our goal here is to give our own presentation of this important subject. We put emphasis on computations with Gaussian coherent states. Our main motiv…
In this work we introduce contact Hamiltonian mechanics, an extension of symplectic Hamiltonian mechanics, and show that it is a natural candidate for a geometric description of non-dissipative and dissipative systems. For this purpose we review in detail the major features of standard symplectic Hamiltonian dynamics and show that all of them can be generalized to the contact case.
The aim of the present text is twofold: to provide a compendium of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian geometries and to introduce and investigate new analytical Mechanics: Finslerian, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian. The fundamental equations (or evolution equations) of these Mechanics are derived from the variational calculus applied to the integral of action and these can be studied by using the methods of Lagrangian or Hamiltonian geometries. More general, the notions of higher order Lagrange or Hamilton spaces have been introduced and developed by the present author. The applications led to the notions…
In Lagrangian mechanics, Noether conservation laws including the energy one are obtained similarly to those in field theory. In Hamiltonian mechanics, Noether conservation laws are issued from the invariance of the Poincare-Cartan integral invariant under one-parameter groups of diffeomorphisms of a configuration space. Lagrangian and Hamiltonian conservation laws need not be equivalent.
We show that non-relativistic and relativistic mechanical systems on a configuration space Q can be seen as the conservative Dirac constraint systems with zero Hamiltonians on different subbundles of the same cotangent bundle T^*Q. The geometric quantization of this cotangent bundle under the vertical polarization leads to compatible covariant quantizations of non-relativistic and relativistic Hamiltonian mechanics.
The direct hamiltonization procedure applied to Nambu mechanical systems proves that the Nambu mechanics is an usual mechanics described by only one Hamiltonian. Thus a particular case of Hamiltonian mechanics. It is also proved that any mechanical system described by the equation d{\bf r}/dt={\bf A(r)} is a Nambu system.
In this paper we aim at presenting a concise but also comprehensive study of time-dependent (tdependent) Hamiltonian dynamics on a locally conformal symplectic (lcs) manifold. We present a generalized geometric theory of canonical transformations and formulate a time-dependent geometric Hamilton-Jacobi theory on lcs manifolds. In contrast to previous papers concerning locally conformal symplectic manifolds, here the introduction of the time dependency brings out interesting geometric properties, as it is the introduction of contact geometry in locally symplectic patches. To conclude, we show e…
In some previous papers, a Legendre duality between Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics has been developed. The (ρ,η)-tangent application of the Legendre bundle morphism associated to a Lagrangian L or Hamiltonian H is presented. Using that, a Legendre description of Lagrangian Mechanics and Hamiltonian Mechanics is developed. Duality between Lie algebroids structure, adapted (ρ,η)-basis, distinguished linear (ρ,η)-connections and mechanical (ρ,η)-systems is the scope of this paper. In the particular case of Lie algebroids, new results are presented. In the particular case of the usual Lie al…
A relativistic Hamiltonian mechanical system is seen as a conservative Dirac constraint system on the cotangent bundle of a pseudo-Riemannian manifold. We provide geometric quantization of this cotangent bundle where the quantum constraint serves as a relativistic quantum equation.
We consider Noether symmetries within Hamiltonian setting as transformations that preserve Poincaré-Cartan form, i.e., as symmetries of characteristic line bundles of nondegenerate 1-forms. In the case when the Poincaré-Cartan form is contact, the explicit expression for the symmetries in the inverse Noether theorem is given. As examples, we consider natural mechanical systems, in particular the Kepler problem. Finally, we prove a variant of the theorem on complete (non-commutative) integrability in terms of Noether symmetries of time-dependent Hamiltonian systems.
A new description, different by the classical theory of Hamiltonian Mechanics, in the general framework of generalized Lie algebroids is presented. In the particular case of Lie algebroids, new and important results are obtained. We present the \emph{dual mechanical systems} called by use, \emph{dual mechanical}$(ρ,η) $\emph{-systems, Hamilton mechanical}$(ρ,η) $\emph{-systems} or \emph{% Cartan mechanical}$(ρ,η) $\emph{-systems.} and we develop their geometries. We obtain the canonical $(ρ,η) $\emph{-}semi(spray) associated to a dual mechanical $(ρ,η) $-system. The Hamilton mechanical $(ρ,η)$…
The probablity current for a quantum spinless relativistic particle is introduced based on the Hamiltonian dynamics approach utilizing the Salpeter equation as an alternative of the Klein-Gordon equation. The correctness of the presented formalism is illustrated by examples of exact solutions to the Salpeter equation including the new ones introduced in this work.
In this paper we introduce a generalization of Hamiltonian mechanics that replaces configuration spaces, conventionally regarded simply as smooth manifolds, with line bundles over smooth manifolds. Classical observables are then identified with the sections of these (generically non-trivial) line bundles. This generalization, mathematically articulated with theory of Jacobi manifolds, is motivated by a conceptual revision of the mathematical foundations of the notion of measurand and unit of measurement in practical science. We prove several technical results for the contact structures present…
Considered is the Schrödinger equation in a finite-dimensional space as an equation of mathematical physics derivable from the variational principle and treatable in terms of the Lagrange-Hamilton formalism. It provides an interesting example of "mechanics" with singular Lagrangians, effectively treatable within the framework of Dirac formalism. We discuss also some modified "Schrödinger" equations involving second-order time derivatives and introduce a kind of non-direct, non-perturbative, geometrically-motivated nonlinearity based on making the scalar product a dynamical quantity. There are …
The general aim of this paper is to extend the Modal-Hamiltonian interpretation of quantum mechanics to the case of relativistic quantum mechanics with gauge U(1) elds. In this case we propose that the actual- valued observables are the Casimir operators of the Poincaré group and of the group U(1) of the internal symmetry of the theory. Moreover, we also show that the magnitudes that acquire actual values in the relativistic and in the non-relativistic cases are correctly related through the adequate limit.
It is shown that the action for Hamiltonian equations of motion can be brought into invariant symplectic form. In other words, it can be formulated directly in terms of the symplectic structure $ω$ without any need to choose some 1-form $γ$, such that $ω= d γ$, which is not unique and does not even generally exist in a global sense.
Continuum mechanics can be formulated in the Lagrangian frame (addressing motion of individual continuum particles) or in the Eulerian frame (addressing evolution of fields in an inertial frame). There is a canonical Hamiltonian structure in the Lagrangian frame. By transformation to the Eulerian frame we find the Poisson bracket for Eulerian continuum mechanics with deformation gradient (or the related distortion matrix). Both Lagrangian and Eulerian Hamiltonian structures are then discussed from the perspective of space-time variational formulation and by means of semidirect products and Lie…
Higher-derivative analogues of multidimensional conformal particle and many-body conformal mechanics are constructed. Their Newton-Hooke counterparts are derived by applying appropriate coordinate transformations.
We show that the supersymmetric algebra of Witten's quantum mechanics is invariant under a given point canonical transformation. It is shown that Witten's supersymmetric quantum mechanics can be isospectral or not to the seed Hamiltonian depending on the space coordinate you work on. We illustrate our results by generating a new class of exactly solvable supersymmetric partner Hamiltonians which are not isospectral to the seed Hamiltonian.
We propose a variant formulation of Hamiltonian systems by the use of variables including redundant degrees of freedom. We show that Hamiltonian systems can be described by extended dynamics whose master equation is the Nambu equation or its generalization. Partition functions associated with the extended dynamics in many degrees of freedom systems are given. Our formulation can also be applied to Hamiltonian systems with first class constraints.
We show how to find the physical Langevin equation describing the trajectories of particles undergoing collisionless stochastic acceleration. These stochastic differential equations retain not only one-, but two-particle statistics, and inherit the Hamiltonian nature of the underlying microscopic equations. This opens the door to using stochastic variational integrators to perform simulations of stochastic interactions such as Fermi acceleration. We illustrate the theory by applying it to two example problems.
The purpose of this paper is to describe geometrically discrete Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics on Lie groupoids. From a variational principle we derive the discrete Euler-Lagrange equations and we introduce a symplectic 2-section, which is preserved by the Lagrange evolution operator. In terms of the discrete Legendre transformations we define the Hamiltonian evolution operator which is a symplectic map with respect to the canonical symplectic 2-section on the prolongation of the dual of the Lie algebroid of the given groupoid. The equations we get include as particular cases the classic…
We give a generalization of the Nambu mechanics based on vector Hamiltonians theory. It is shown that any divergence-free phase flow in $\mathbb{R}^n$ can be represented as a generalized Nambu mechanics with $n-1$ integral invariants. For the case when the phase flow in $\mathbb{R}^n$ has $n-3$ or less first integrals, we introduce the Cartan concept of mechanics. As an example we give the fifth integral invariant of Euler top.
We study Lagrangian systems with a finite number of degrees of freedom that are non-local in time. We obtain an extension of Noether theorem and Noether identities to this kind of Lagrangians. A Hamiltonian formalism is then set up for this systems. $n$-order local Lagrangians can be treated as a particular case and the standard results for them are recovered. The method is then applied to several other cases, namely two examples of non-local oscillators and the p-adic particle.
We show a constrained Hamiltonian system and a gauged sigma model have a structure of a momentum section and a Hamiltonian Lie algebroid theory recently introduced by Blohmann and Weinstein. We propose a generalization of a momentum section on a pre-multisymplectic manifold by considering gauged sigma models on a higher dimensional manifold.
The book can be divided in three parts: the Lagrange geometry of order $k$, presented in the first three chapters, the geometrical theory of the dual manifolds $T^{*k}M$ - chapters 4-7 and the geometry of Hamilton spaces of order $k$ and their subspaces, contained in the last four chapters. They are studied directly and as 'dual' geometry, via Legendre transformation.
We propose a generalization of the momentum map on a symplectic manifold with a Lie algebra action to a Courant algebroid structure. The theory of a momentum section on a Lie algebroid is generalized to the theory compatible with a Courant algebroid. As an example, we identify the momentum section in a constrained Hamiltonian mechanics with Courant algebroid symmetry. Moreover, we construct cohomological formulations by considering the BFV and BV formalism of this Hamiltonian system. The Weil algebra for this structure is constructed.
Riemannian geometry is a particular case of Hamiltonian mechanics: the orbits of the hamiltonian $H=\frac{1}{2}g^{ij}p_{i}p_{j}$ are the geodesics. Given a symplectic manifold (Γ,ω), a hamiltonian $H:Γ\to\mathbb{R}$ and a Lagrangian sub-manifold $M\subsetΓ$ we find a generalization of the notion of curvature. The particular case $H=\frac{1}{2}g^{ij}\left[p_{i}-A_{i}\right]\left[p_{j}-A_{j}\right]+ϕ$ of a particle moving in a gravitational, electromagnetic and scalar fields is studied in more detail. The integral of the generalized Ricci tensor w.r.t. the Boltzmann weight reduces to the action …
The elements of the contrained dynamics algorithm in the De Donder-Weyl (DW) Hamiltonian theory for degenerate Lagrangian theories are discussed. A generalization of the Dirac bracket to the DW Hamiltonian theory with second class constraints (defined in the text) is presented.
In this letter, we present the general form of equations that generate a volume-preserving flow on a symplectic manifold (M, ω). It is shown that every volume-preserving flow has some 2-forms acting the role of the Hamiltonian functions in the Hamiltonian mechanics and the ordinary Hamilton equations are included as a special case with a 2-form \frac{1}{n-1} H ωwhere H is the corresponding Hamiltonian.
In this paper, we discuss time evolution and adiabatic approximation in $PT$-symmetric quantum mechanics. we give the time evolving equation for a class of $PT$-symmetric Hamiltonians and some conditions of the adiabatic approximation for the class of $PT$-symmetric Hamiltonians.
We provide geometric quantization of the vertical cotangent bundle V^*Q equipped with the canonical Poisson structure. This is a momentum phase space of non-relativistic mechanics with the configuration bundle Q -> R. The goal is the Schrodinger representation of V^*Q. We show that this quantization is equivalent to the fibrewise quantization of symplectic fibres of V^*Q -> R, that makes the quantum algebra of non-relativistic mechanics an instantwise algebra. Quantization of the classical evolution equation defines a connection on this instantwise algebra, which provides quantum evolution in …
Standandard Hamiltonian mechanics in its homogeneous formulation is applied to the study of discontinuities representing rapid changes of Hamiltonians. Different formulations of Hamiltonian mechanics are reviewed. An original representation of a positive homogeneous Hamiltonian system by an outer oriented coisotropic submanifold of the phase space is proposed.
We show that a large class of dissipative systems can be brought to a canonical form by introducing complex co-ordinates in phase space and a complex-valued hamiltonian. A naive canonical quantization of these systems lead to non-hermitean hamiltonian operators. The excited states are unstable and decay to the ground state . We also compute the tunneling amplitude across a potential barrier.
The constraint reaction force of ideal nonholonomic constraints in time-dependent mechanics on a configuration bundle $Q\to R$ is obtained. Using the vertical extension of Hamiltonian formalism to the vertical tangent bundle $VQ$ of $Q\to R$, the Hamiltonian of a nonholonomic constrained system is constructed.
We present a systematic treatment of line bundle geometry and Jacobi manifolds with an application to geometric mechanics that has not been noted in the literature. We precisely identify categories that generalise the ordinary categories of smooth manifolds and vector bundles to account for a lack of choice of a preferred unit, which in standard differential geometry is always given by the global constant function $1$. This is what we call the `unit-free' approach. After giving a characterisation of local Lie brackets via their symbol maps we apply our novel categorical language to review Jaco…
A description of time-dependent Mechanics in terms of Lagrangian submanifolds of Dirac manifolds (in particular, presymplectic and Poisson manifolds) is presented. Two new Tulczyjew triples are discussed. The first one is adapted to the restricted Hamiltonian formalism and the second one is adapted to the extended Hamiltonian formalism.
Interpolation of two adjacent Hamiltonians in SUSY quantum mechanics $H_s=(1-s)A^{\dagger}A + sAA^{\dagger}$, $0\le s\le 1$ is discussed together with related operators. For a wide variety of shape-invariant degree one quantum mechanics and their `discrete' counterparts, the interpolation Hamiltonian is also shape-invariant, that is it takes the same form as the original Hamiltonian with shifted coupling constant(s).
This series of papers is devoted to an open-ended project aimed at the solution of Hilbert's sixth problem (concerning joint axiomatization of physics and probability theory) proposed to be constructed in the framework of an all-embracing mechanics. In this first paper, the bare skeleton of such a mechanics is constructed in the form of noncommutative Hamiltonian mechanics (NHM) which combines elements of noncommutative symplectic geometry and noncommutative probability in the framework of topological superalgebras; it includes, besides NHM basics, a treatment of Lie group actions in NHM and n…
A harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian augmented by a non-Hermitian \pt-symmetric part and its su(1,1) generalizations, for which a family of positive-definite metric operators was recently constructed, are re-examined in a supersymmetric context. Quasi-Hermitian supersymmetric extensions of such Hamiltonians are proposed by enlarging su(1,1) to a ${\rm su}(1,1/1) \sim {\rm osp}(2/2, \R)$ superalgebra. This allows the construction of new non-Hermitian Hamiltonians related by similarity to Hermitian ones. Some examples of them are reviewed.
A general algebraic condition for the functional independence of 2n-1 constants of motion of an n-dimensional maximal superintegrable Hamiltonian system has been proved for an arbitrary finite n. This makes it possible to construct, in a well-defined generic way, a normalized Nambu bracket which produces the correct Hamiltonian time evolution. Existence and explicit forms of pairwise compatible multi-Hamiltonian structures for any maximal superintegrable system have been established. The Calogero-Moser system, motion of a charged particle in a uniform perpendicular magnetic field and Smorodins…
We propose a discretization of vector fields that are Hamiltonian up to multiplication by a positive function on the phase space that may be interpreted as a time reparametrization. We prove that our method is structure preserving in the sense that the discrete flow is interpolated to arbitrary order by the flow of a continuous system possessing the same structure. In particular, our discretization preserves a smooth measure on the phase space to arbitrary order. We present applications to a remarkable class of nonholonomic mechanical systems that allow Hamiltonization. To our best knowledge, …
Nonrelativistic Hamiltonians with large, even infinite, ground-state degeneracy are studied by connecting the degeneracy to the property of a Dirac operator. We then identify a special class of Hamiltonians, for which the full space of degenerate ground states in any spatial dimension can be exhibited explicitly. The two-dimensional version of the latter coincides with the Pauli Hamiltonian, and recently-discussed models leading to higher-dimensional Landau levels are obtained as special cases of the higher-dimensional version of this Hamiltonian. But, in our framework, it is only the asymptot…
We derive out a complete series expression of Hamiltonian eigenvalues without any approximation and cut in the general quantum systems based on Wang's formal framework \cite{wang1}. In particular, we then propose a calculating approach of eigenvalues of arbitrary Hamiltonian via solving an algebra equation satisfied by a kernal function, which involves the contributions from all order perturbations. In order to verify the validity of our expressions and reveal the power of our approach, we calculate the ground state energy of a quartic anharmonic oscillator and have obtained good enough result…
In this paper an approach is proposed to represent a class of dissipative mechanical systems by corresponding infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems. This approach is based upon the following structure: for any non-conservative classical mechanical system and arbitrary initial conditions, there exists a conservative system; both systems share one and only one common phase curve; and, the value of the Hamiltonian of the conservative system is, up to an additive constant, equal to the total energy of the non-conservative system on the aforementioned phase curve, the constant depending on the i…
