We show the existence of a $2$-parameter family of properly Alexandrov-embedded surfaces with constant mean curvature $0\leq H\leq\frac{1}{2}$ in ${\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}}$. They are symmetric with respect to a horizontal slice and a $k$ vertical planes disposed symmetrically, and extend the so called minimal saddle towers and $k$-noids. We show that the orientation plays a fundamental role when $H>0$ by analyzing their conjugate minimal surfaces in $\widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}_2(\mathbb{R})$ or $\mathrm{Nil}_3$. We also discover new complete examples that we call $(H,k)$-nodoids, whose $k$ ends are asymptotic to vertical cylinders over curves of geodesic curvature $2H$ from the convex side, often giving rise to non-embedded examples if $H>0$.
In the discussion of embeddedness of the constructed examples, we prove that the Krust property does not hold for any $H>0$, i.e., there are minimal graphs over convex domains in $\widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}_2(\mathbb{R})$, $\mathrm{Nil}_3$ or the Berger spheres, whose conjugate surfaces with constant mean curvature $H$ in $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ are not graphs.
We obtain area growth estimates for constant mean curvature graphs in $\mathbb{E}(κ,τ)$-spaces with $κ\leq 0$, by finding sharp upper bounds for the volume of geodesic balls in $\mathbb{E}(κ,τ)$. We focus on complete graphs and graphs with zero boundary values. For instance, we prove that entire graphs in $\mathbb{E}(κ,τ)$ with critical mean curvature have at most cubic intrinsic area growth. We also obtain sharp upper bounds for the extrinsic area growth of graphs with zero boundary values, and study distinguished examples in detail such as invariant surfaces, $k$-noids and ideal Scherk graph…
Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold and $S$ a subvariety of $X$ with higher co-dimension. The aim is to study complete constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics on non-compact Kähler manifold $X-S$ with Poincaré--Mok--Yau asymptotic property (see Definition \ref{def}). In this paper, the methods of Calabi's ansatz and the moment construction are used to provide some special examples of such metrics.
We prove that for combinatorial graphs with non-negative Ollivier curvature, one has \[ \|P_t μ- P_t ν\|_1 \leq \frac{W_1(μ,ν)}{\sqrt{t}} \] for all probability measures $μ,ν$ where $P_t$ is the heat semigroup and $W_1$ is the $\ell_1$-Wasserstein distance. This turns out to be an equivalent formulation of a version of reverse Poincaré inequality. Furthermore, this estimate allows us to prove Buser inequality, Liouville property and the the eigenvalue estimate $λ_1 \geq \log(2)/\operatorname{diam}^2$.
In this article, we prove a Liouville property of holomorphic maps from a complete Kahler manifold with nonnegative holomorphic bisectional curvature to a complete simply connected Kahler manifold with a certain assumption on the sectional curvature.
Measure contraction properties $MCP(K,N)$ are synthetic Ricci curvature lower bounds for metric measure spaces which do not necessarily have smooth structures. It is known that if a Riemannian manifold has dimension $N$, then $MCP(K,N)$ is equivalent to Ricci curvature bounded below by $K$. On the other hand, it was observed in \cite{Ri} that there is a family of left invariant metrics on the three dimensional Heisenberg group for which the Ricci curvature is not bounded below. Though this family of metric spaces equipped with the Harr measure satisfy $MCP(0,5)$. In this paper, we give suffici…
We establish a nice orthonormal frame field on a closed surface minimally immersed in a unit sphere $S^{n}$, under which the shape operators take very simple forms. Using this frame field, we obtain an interesting property $K+K^{N}=1$ for the Gauss curvature $K$ and the normal curvature $K^{N}$ if the Gauss curvature is positive. Moreover, using this property we obtain the pinching on the intrinsic curvature and normal curvature, the pinching on the normal curvature, respectively.
It is known that an isometric action of a Lie group on a compact symmetric space gives rise to a proper Fredholm action of a path group on a path space via the gauge transformations. In this paper, supposing that the isometric action is a Hermann action (i.e. an isometric action of a symmetric subgroup of the isometry group) we give an explicit formula for the principal curvatures of orbits of the path group action and study the condition for those orbits to be austere, that is, the set of principal curvatures in the direction of each normal vector is invariant under the multiplication by minu…
Measure contraction property is a synthetic Ricci curvature lower bound for metric measure spaces. We consider Sasakian manifolds with non-negative Tanaka-Webster Ricci curvature equipped with the metric measure space structure defined by the sub-Riemannian metric and the Popp measure. We show that these spaces satisfy the measure contraction property $MCP(0,N)$ for some positive integer $N$. We also show that the same result holds when the Sasakian manifold is equipped with a family of Riemannian metrics extending the sub-Riemannian one.
This paper concerns complete noncompact manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. Roughly, we say that M has the loops to infinity property if given any noncontractible closed curve, C, and given any compact set, K, there exists a closed curve contained in M\K which is homotopic to C. The main theorems in this paper are the following. Theorem I: If M has positive Ricci curvature then it has the loops to infinity property. Theorem II: If M has nonnegative Ricci curvature then it either has the loops to infinity property or it is isometric to a flat normal bundle over a compact totally geodesi…
We prove the regularity of solutions to the strain tensor equation on a region $S$ with the Gauss curvature changing sign. Furthermore, we obtain the density property that smooth infinitesimal isometries are dense in the $W^{2,2}(S,\mathbb{R}^3)$ infinitesimal isometries. Finally, the matching property is established. Those results are important tools in obtaining recovery sequences ($Γ$-lim sup inequality) for dimensionally-reduced shell theories in elasticity.
Unique continuation results are proved for metrics with prescribed Ricci curvature in the setting of bounded metrics on compact manifolds with boundary, and in the setting of complete, conformally compact metrics. Related to this issue, an isometry extension property is proved: continuous groups of isometries at conformal infinity extend into the bulk of any complete conformally compact Einstein metric. Relations of this property with the invariance of the Gauss-Codazzi constraint equations under deformations are also discussed.
In this paper, we prove a half-space theorem with respect to constant mean curvature $1/2$ entire graphs in $\mathbb{E(-1,τ)}$. If $Σ$ is such an entire graph and $Σ'$ is a properly immersed constant mean curvature $1/2$ surface included in the mean convex side of $Σ$ then $Σ'$ is a vertical translate of $Σ$. We also have an equivalent statement for the non mean convex side of $Σ$.
In the study manifolds of Ricci curvature bounded below, a stumbling obstruction is the lack of links between large-scale geometry and small-scale geometry at a fixed reference point. There have been few links (volume, dimension) when the unit ball at the point is not collapsed, that is, $\mathrm{vol}(B_1(p))\ge v>0$. In this paper, we conjecture a new link in terms of isometries: if the maximal displacement of an isometry $f$ on $B_1(p)$ is at least $δ>0$, then the maximal displacement of $f$ on the rescaled unit ball $r^{-1}B_r(p)$ is at least $Φ(δ,n,v)>0$ for all $r\in(0,1)$. We call this s…
We observe that the maximal open set of constant curvature k in a Riemannian manifold with curvature bounded below or above by k has a convexity type property, which we call "two-convexity". This statement is used to prove a number of rigidity statements in comparison geometry.
In this paper we investigate two important properties of metric measure spaces satisfying the reduced curvature-dimension condition for negative values of the dimension parameter: the existence of a transport map between two suitable marginals and the so-called local-to-global property.
We demonstrate that the property of being Alexandrov immersed is preserved along mean curvature flow. Furthermore, we demonstrate that mean curvature flow techniques for mean convex embedded flows such as noncollapsing and gradient estimates also hold in this setting. We also indicate the necessary modifications to the work of Brendle--Huisken to allow for mean curvature flow with surgery for the Alexandrov immersed, $2$-dimensional setting.
In this paper we prove that a nonflat Kähler-Ricci soliton of the Ricci flow on a complex two-dimensional Kähler manifold with nonnegative holomorphic bisectional curvature can not be of maximal volume growth.
Measure contraction property is one of the possible generalizations of Ricci curvature bound to more general metric measure spaces. In this paper, we discover sufficient conditions for a three dimensional contact subriemannian manifold to satisfy this property.
We study the mean curvature flow of complete space-like submanifolds in pseudo-Euclidean space with bounded Gauss image, as well as that of complete submanifolds in Euclidean space with convex Gauss image. By using the confinable property of the Gauss image under the mean curvature flow we prove the long time existence results in both cases. We also study the asymptotic behavior of these solutions when $t\to\infty$.
In this paper, we prove a classification for complete embedded constant weighted mean curvature hypersurfaces $Σ\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. We characterize the hyperplanes and generalized round cylinders by using an intrinsic property on the norm of the second fundamental form. Furthermore, we prove an equivalence of properness, finite weighted volume and exponential volume growth for submanifolds with weighted mean curvature of at most linear growth.
In this short note, we study the asymptotic property of Huisken's functional for mean curvature flow on the minimal submanifolds of Euclidean space. We prove that the limit of Huisken's functional equals to the extrinsic asymptotic volume ratio on the minimal submanifold of Euclidean space.
As a means to better understanding manifolds with positive curvature, there has been much recent interest in the study of non-negatively curved manifolds which contain points at which all 2-planes have positive curvature. We show that there are generalisations of the well-known Eschenburg spaces and quotients of $\sph^7 \x \sph^7$ which admit metrics with this property.
We show that a properly immersed minimal hypersurface in M x R_+ equals some M x {c} when M is a complete, recurrent n-dimensional Riemannian manifold with bounded curvature. If on the other hand, M has nonnegative Ricci curvature with curvature bounded below, the same result holds for any positive entire minimal graph over M.
We find examples of cohomogeneity one metrics on $S^4$ and $\mathbb C P^2$ with positive sectional curvature that lose this property when evolved via Ricci flow. These metrics are arbitrarily small perturbations of Grove--Ziller metrics with flat planes that become instantly negatively curved under Ricci flow.
In this work, we propose a new evolving geometric flow (called translating mean curvature flow) for the translating solitons of hypersurfaces in $R^{n+1}$. We study the basic properties, such as positivity preserving property, of the translating mean curvature flow. The Dirichlet problem for the graphical translating mean curvature flow is studied and the global existence of the flow and the convergence property are also considered.
We study properties of non-minimal biharmonic hypersurfaces of spheres. The main result is a CMC Unique Continuation Theorem for biharmonic hypersurfaces of spheres. We then deduce new rigidity theorems to support the Conjecture that biharmonic submanifolds of Euclidean spheres must be of constant mean curvature.
We prove that Delaunay surfaces, except the plane and the catenoid, are the only surfaces in Euclidean space with nonzero constant mean curvature that can be expressed as an implicit equation of type $f(x)+g(y)+h(z)=0$, where $f$, $g$ and $h$ are smooth real functions of one variable.
We study the constant mean curvature (CMC) hypersurfaces in hyperbolic space whose asymptotic boundaries are closed codimension-1 submanifolds in sphere at infinity. We consider CMC hypersurfaces as generalizations of minimal hypersurfaces. We naturally generalize some notions of minimal hypersurfaces like being area minimizing, convex hull property, exchange roundoff trick to the CMC hypersurface context. We also give a generic uniqueness result for CMC hypersurfaces in hyperbolic space.
We classify the Lagrangian orientable surfaces in complex space forms with the property that the ellipse of curvature is always a circle. As a consequence, we obtain new characterizations of the Clifford torus of the complex projective plane and of the Whitney spheres in the complex projective, complex Euclidean and complex hyperbolic planes.
In this paper, we show that the constant property of the Gaussian curvature of surfaces of revolution in both $\mathbb R^4$ and $\mathbb R_1^4$ depend only on the radius of rotation. We then give necessary and sufficient conditions for the Gaussian curvature of the general rotational surfaces whose meridians lie in two dimensional planes in $\mathbb R^4$ to be constant, and define the parametrization of the meridians when both the Gaussian curvature is constant and the rates of rotation are equal.
We consider a quadratic form defined on the surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector of an any dimensional complex space form and prove that its $(2,0)$-part is holomorphic. When the complex dimension of the ambient space is equal to $2$ we define a second quadratic form with the same property and then determine those surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector on which the $(2,0)$-parts of both of them vanish. We also provide a reduction of codimension theorem and prove a non-existence result for $2$-spheres with parallel mean curvature vector.
We consider the graphical mean curvature flow of strictly area decreasing maps $f:M\to N$, where $M$ is a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $m>1$ and $N$ a complete Riemannian surface of bounded geometry. We prove long-time existence of the flow and that the strictly area decreasing property is preserved, when the bi-Ricci curvature $BRic_M$ of $M$ is bounded from below by the sectional curvature $σ_N$ of $N$. In addition, we obtain smooth convergence to a minimal map if $Ric_M\ge\sup\{0,{\sup}_Nσ_N\}$. These results significantly improve known results on the graphical mean curvature fl…
Let $\mathbb{M}$ be a smooth connected manifold endowed with a smooth measure $μ$ and a smooth locally subelliptic diffusion operator $L$ satisfying $L1=0$, and which is symmetric with respect to $μ$. We show that if $L$ satisfies, with a non negative curvature parameter, the generalized curvature inequality introduced by the first and third named authors in \cite{BG}, then the following properties hold: 1 The volume doubling property; 2 The Poincaré inequality; 3 The parabolic Harnack inequality. The key ingredient is the study of dimensional reverse log-Sobolev inequalities for the heat semi…
We consider a family of embedded, mean convex hypersurfaces in a Riemannian manifold which evolve by the mean curvature flow. We show that, given any number $T>0$ and any $δ>0$, we can find a constant $C_0$ with the following property: if $t \in [0,T)$ and $p$ is a point on $M_t$ where the curvature is greater than $C_0$, then the inscribed radius is at least $\frac{1}{(1+δ) \, H}$ at the point $p$. The constant $C_0$ depends only on $δ$, $T$, and the initial data.
On some specified convex supporting sets of spheres, we find a generalized longitude function whose level sets are totally geodesic. Given an arbitrary (weakly) harmonic map into spheres, the composition of the generalized longitude function and harmonic map satisfies an elliptic equation of divergence type. With the aid of corresponding Harnack inequality, we establish image shrinking property and then the regularity results are followed. Applying such results to study the Gauss image of minimal hypersurfaces in Euclidean spaces, we obtain curvature estimates and corresponding Bernstein theor…
Solutions to scalar curvature equations have the property that all possible blow-up points are isolated, at least in low dimensions. This property is commonly used as the first step in the proofs of compactness. We show that this result becomes false for some arbitrarily small, smooth perturbations of the potential.
In this paper, we study the Ricci flow on a closed manifold of dimension $n \ge 4$ and finite time interval $[0,T)~(T < \infty)$ on which the scalar curvature are uniformly bounded. We prove that if such flow of dimension $4 \le n \le 7$ has finite time singularities, then every blow-up sequence of a locally Type I singularity has certain property. Here, locally Type I singularity is what Buzano and Di-Matteo defined.
Inspired by the work of Z. Lu and G. Tian \cite{lutian}, in this paper we address the problem of studying those \K\ manifolds satisfying the $Δ$-property, i.e. such that on a neighborhood of each of its points the $k$-th power of the \K Laplacian is a polynomial function of the complex Euclidean Laplacian, for all positive integer $k$ (see below for its definition). We prove two results: 1. if a \K\ manifold satisfies the $Δ$-property then its curvature tensor is parallel; 2. if an Hermitian symmetric space of classical type satisfies the $Δ$-property then it is a complex space form (namely it…
Let $M$ be a Riemannian manifold and $Ω$ a compact domain of $M$ with smooth boundary. We study the solution of the heat equation on $Ω$ having constant unit initial conditions and Dirichlet boundary conditions. The purpose of this paper is to study the geometry of domains for which, at any fixed value of time, the normal derivative of the solution (heat flow) is a constant function on the boundary. We express this fact by saying that such domains have the constant flow property. In constant curvature spaces known examples of such domains are given by geodesic balls and, more generally, by dom…
We define a Weyl-type curvature tensor that provides a characterisation for Finsler metrics of constant flag curvature. When the Finsler metric reduces to a Riemannian metric, the Weyl-type curvature tensor reduces to the classic projective Weyl tensor. In the general case, the Weyl-type curvature tensor differs from the Weyl projective curvature, it is not a projective invariant, and hence Beltrami Theorem does not work in Finsler geometry. We provide the relation between the Weyl-type curvature tensors of two projectively related Finsler metrics. Using this formula we show that a projective …
We study constant mean curvature 1/2 surfaces in H2xR that admit a compactification of the mean curvature operator. We show that a particular family of complete entire graphs over H2 admits a structure of infinite dimensional manifold with local control on the behaviors at infinity. These graphs also appear to have a half-space property and we deduce a uniqueness result at infinity. Deforming non degenerate constant mean curvature 1/2 annuli, we provide a large class of (non rotational) examples and construct (possibly embedded) annuli without axis, i.e. with two vertical, asymptotically rotat…
We study the behavior of minimal hypersurfaces in the Schwarzschild $n$-manifolds that intersect the horizon orthogonally along the boundary. We show that a free boundary minimal hypersurface and a totally geodesic hyperplane must intersect when the distance between them is achieved in a bounded region. We also discuss when the Schwarzschild metric is perturbed in a way that its scalar curvature is no longer positive.
In this paper, we prove that the infimum of the mean curvature is zero for a translating solitons of hypersurface in $\re^{n+k}$. We give some conditions under which a complete hypersurface translating soliton is stable. We show that if the norm of its mean curvature is less than one, then the weighted volume may have exponent growth. We also study the Dirichlet problem for graphic translating solitons in higher codimensions.
In this note, we concentrate on the sub-Laplace on the nilpotent Lie group of rank two, which is the infinitesimal generator of the diffusion generated by $n$ Brownian motions and their $\frac{n(n-1)}2$ Lévy area processes, which is the simple extension of the sub-Laplace on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}$. In order to study contraction properties of the heat kernel, we show that, as in the cases of the Heisenberg group and the three Brownian motion model, the restriction of the sub-Laplace acting on radial functions (see Definition \ref{radial fun}) satisfies a positive Ricci curvature cond…
We propose a new two-component geodesic equation with the unusual property that the underlying space has constant positive curvature. In the special case of one space dimension, the equation reduces to the two-component Hunter-Saxton equation.
In this paper we adapt work of Z.-D. Liu to prove a ball covering property for non-branching $\mathsf{CD}$ spaces with nonnegative curvature outside a compact set. As a consequence we obtain uniform bounds on the number of ends of such spaces.
