Let $\mathbb{M}$ be a smooth connected manifold endowed with a smooth measure $μ$ and a smooth locally subelliptic diffusion operator $L$ satisfying $L1=0$, and which is symmetric with respect to $μ$. We show that if $L$ satisfies, with a non negative curvature parameter, the generalized curvature inequality introduced by the first and third named authors in \cite{BG}, then the following properties hold:
1 The volume doubling property; 2 The Poincaré inequality; 3 The parabolic Harnack inequality.
The key ingredient is the study of dimensional reverse log-Sobolev inequalities for the heat semigroup and corresponding non-linear reverse Harnack type inequalities. Our results apply in particular to all Sasakian manifolds whose horizontal Webster-Tanaka-Ricci curvature is non negative, all Carnot groups with step two, and to wide subclasses of principal bundles over Riemannian manifolds whose Ricci curvature is non negative.
The purpose of this work is to study some monotone functionals of the heat kernel on a complete Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature. In particular, we show that on these manifolds, the gradient estimate of Li and Yau, the gradient estimate of Ni, the monotonicity of the Perelman's entropy and the volume doubling property are all consequences of an entropy inequality recently discovered by Baudoin-Garofalo. The latter is a linearized version of a logarithmic Sobolev inequality that is due to D. Bakry and M. Ledoux.
We prove an existence result for the Poisson equation on non-compact Riemannian manifolds satisfying weighted Poincaré inequalities outside compact sets. Our result applies to a large class of manifolds including, for instance, all non-parabolic manifolds with minimal positive Green's function vanishing at infinity. On the source function we assume a sharp pointwise decay depending on the weight appearing in the Poincaré inequality and on the behavior of the Ricci curvature at infinity. We do not require any curvature or spectral assumptions on the manifold.
We prove that complete Riemannian manifolds with polynomial growth and Ricci curvature bounded from below, admit uniform Poincaré inequalities. A global, uniform Poincaré inequality for horospheres in the universal cover of a closed, $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with pinched negative sectional curvature follows as a corollary.
By studying the heat semigroup, we prove Li-Yau type estimates for bounded and positive solutions of the heat equation on graphs, under the assumption of the curvature-dimension inequality $CDE'(n,0)$, which can be consider as a notion of curvature for graphs. Furthermore, we derive that if a graph has non-negative curvature then it has the volume doubling property, from this we can prove the Gaussian estimate for heat kernel, and then Poincaré inequality and Harnack inequality. As a consequence, we obtain that the dimension of space of harmonic functions on graphs with polynomial growth is fi…
On a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary, the absolute and relative cohomology groups appear as certain subspaces of harmonic forms. DeTurck and Gluck showed that these concrete realizations of the cohomology groups decompose into orthogonal subspaces corresponding to cohomology coming from the interior and boundary of the manifold. The principal angles between these interior subspaces are all acute and are called Poincare duality angles. This paper determines the Poincare duality angles of a collection of interesting manifolds with boundary derived from complex projective spaces and fro…
In this paper we prove the Poincaré lemma on some $n$-dimensional corank 1 sub-Riemannian structures, formulating the $\frac{(n-1)n(n^2+3n-2)}{8}$ necessarily and sufficiently 'curl-vanishing' compatibility conditions. In particular, this result solves partially an open problem formulated by Calin and Chang. Our proof is based on a Poincaré lemma stated on Riemannian manifolds and a suitable Cesàro-Volterra path integral formula established in local coordinates. As a byproduct, a Saint-Venant lemma is also provided on generic Riemannian manifolds. Some examples are presented on the hyperbolic …
Building on previous works of H. L. Bray, of P. Miao, and of S. Almaraz, E. Barbosa, and L. L. de Lima, we develop a doubling procedure for asymptotically flat half-spaces $(M,g)$ with horizon boundary $Σ\subset M$ and mass $m\in\mathbb{R}$. If $3\leq \dim(M)\leq 7$, $(M,g)$ has non-negative scalar curvature, and the boundary $\partial M$ is mean-convex, we obtain the Riemannian Penrose-type inequality $$ m\geq\left(\frac{1}{2}\right)^{\frac{n}{n-1}}\,\left(\frac{|Σ|}{ω_{n-1}}\right)^{\frac{n-2}{n-1}} $$ as a corollary. Moreover, in the case where $\partial M$ is not totally geodesic, we show …
We study the validity of the $L^p$ inequality for the Riesz transform when $p>2$ and of its reverse inequality when $p<2$ on complete Riemannian manifolds under the doubling property and some Poincaré inequalities.
In a 2013 paper, Gromov proves that if smooth Riemannian metrics $g_i$ converge to a smooth Riemannian metric $g$ uniformly, and $g_i$ have scalar curvature uniformly bounded below, then $g$ shares the same scalar curvature lower bound. In some places in the paper, the proofs are only sketched. In this paper we explain one of those sketched steps in detail. Specifically, we prove that a cube (the product $[0,1]^n$) cannot have a Riemannian metric with positive scalar curvature, such that the faces are mean convex, and such that the dihedral angles along the edges are all acute. The proof is ac…
In the first part of this paper we prove some new Poincaré inequalities, with explicit constants, for domains of any hypersurface of a Riemannian manifold with sectional curvatures bounded from above. This inequalities involve the first and the second symmetric functions of the eigenvalues of the second fundamental form of such hypersurface. We apply these inequalities to derive some isoperimetric inequalities and to estimate the volume of domains enclosed by compact self-shrinkers in terms of its scalar curvature. In the second part of the paper we prove some mean value inequalities and as co…
Let $(M,g)$ be an open, oriented and incomplete riemannian manifold of dimension $m$. Under some general conditions we show that it is possible to build a Hilbert complex $(L^2Ω^i(M,g),d_{\mathfrak{M},i})$ such that its cohomology groups, labeled with $H^i_{2,\mathfrak{M}}(M,g)$, satisfy the following properties: \begin{itemize} \item $H^i_{2,\mathfrak{M}}(M,g)=ker(d_{max,i})/\im(d_{min,i})$ \item $H^i_{2,\mathfrak{M}}(M,g)\cong H^{m-i}_{2,\mathfrak{M}}(M,g)$ (Poincaré duality holds) \end{itemize} Finally in the rest of the paper we study some properties of this complex with particular attenti…
After analyzing renormalization schemes on a Poincaré-Einstein manifold, we study the renormalized integrals of scalar Riemannian invariants. The behavior of the renormalized volume is well-known, and we show any scalar Riemannian invariant renormalizes similarly. We consider characteristic forms and their behavior under a variation of the Poincaré-Einstein structure, and obtain, from the renormalized integral of the Pfaffian, an extension of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem.
By adapting some ideas of M. Ledoux \cite{ledoux2}, \cite{ledoux-stflour} and \cite{Led} to a sub-Riemannian framework we study Sobolev, Poincaré and isoperimetric inequalities associated to subelliptic diffusion operators that satisfy the generalized curvature dimension inequality that was introduced by F. Baudoin and N. Garofalo in \cite{Bau2}. Our results apply in particular on all CR Sasakian manifolds whose horizontal Webster-Tanaka-Ricci curvature is non negative, all Carnot groups with step two, and wide subclasses of principal bundles over Riemannian manifolds whose Ricci curvature is …
We study a Riemannian manifold equipped with a density which satisfies the Bakry--Émery Curvature-Dimension condition (combining a lower bound on its generalized Ricci curvature and an upper bound on its generalized dimension). We first obtain a Poincaré-type inequality on its boundary assuming that the latter is locally-convex; this generalizes a purely Euclidean inequality of Colesanti, originally derived as an infinitesimal form of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality, thereby precluding any extensions beyond the Euclidean setting. A dual version for generalized mean-convex boundaries is also obt…

In this paper we study global Poincare inequalities on balls in a large class of sub-Riemannian manifolds satisfying the generalized curvature dimension inequality introduced by F.Baudoin and N.Garofalo. As a corollary, we prove the uniqueness of solutions for the subelliptic heat equation. Our results apply in particular to CR Sasakian manifolds with Tanaka-Webster-Ricci curvature bounded from below and Carnot groups of step two.
A carpet is a metric space homeomorphic to the Sierpinski carpet. We characterize, within a certain class of examples, non-self-similar carpets supporting curve families of nontrivial modulus and supporting Poincaré inequalities. Our results yield new examples of compact doubling metric measure spaces supporting Poincaré inequalities: these examples have no manifold points, yet embed isometrically as subsets of Euclidean space.
Given a probability measure $μ$ supported on a convex subset $Ω$ of Euclidean space $(\mathbb{R}^d,g_0)$, we are interested in obtaining Poincaré and log-Sobolev type inequalities on $(Ω,g_0,μ)$. To this end, we change the metric $g_0$ to a more general Riemannian one $g$, adapted in a certain sense to $μ$, and perform our analysis on $(Ω,g,μ)$. The types of metrics we consider are Hessian metrics (intimately related to associated optimal-transport problems), product metrics (which are very useful when $μ$ is unconditional, i.e. invariant under reflection with respect to the principle hyperpla…
We carry out calculations of Orlicz cohomology for some basic Riemannian manifolds (the real line, the hyperbolic plane, the ball). Relationship between Orlicz cohomology and Poincaré--Sobolev--Orlicz-type inequalities is discussed.
An almost Einstein manifold satisfies equations which are a slight weakening of the Einstein equations; Einstein metrics, Poincare-Einstein metrics, and compactifications of certain Ricci-flat asymptotically locally Euclidean structures are special cases. The governing equation is a conformally invariant overdetermined PDE on a function. Away from the zeros of this the almost Einstein structure is Einstein, while the zero set gives a scale singularity set which may be viewed as a conformal infinity for the Einstein metric. In this article we give a classification of the possible scale singular…
For a Morse function on a closed orientable Riemannian manifold one introduces the {\it virtually small spectral package} an analytic object consisting of a finite number of analytic quantities derived from the pair, {\it Riemannian metric, Morse function\} which, in principle, can be calculated. One shows that they determine the {\it Torsion } of the underlying space, a parallel to the result that the dimensions of the spaces of harmonic forms calculate the {\it Euler-Poincaré characteristic} of the underlying space and extends the {\it Poincaré Duality} between harmonic forms and between Bet…
Let $M$ be a complete connected Riemannian manifold. Assuming that the Riemannian measure is doubling, we define Hardy spaces $H^p$ of differential forms on $M$ and give various characterizations of them, including an atomic decomposition. As a consequence, we derive the $H^p$-boundedness for Riesz transforms on $M$, generalizing previously known results. Further applications, in particular to $H^{\infty}$ functional calculus and Hodge decomposition, are given.
We prove a Poincaré, and a general Sobolev type inequalities for functions with compact support defined on a $k$-rectifiable varifold $V$ defined on a complete Riemannian manifold with positive injectivity radius and sectional curvature bounded above. Our techniques allow us to consider Riemannian manifolds $(M^n,g)$ with $g$ of class $C^2$ or more regular, avoiding the use of Nash's isometric embedding theorem. Our analysis permits to do some quite important fragments of geometric measure theory also for those Riemannian manifolds carrying a $C^2$ metric $g$, that is not $C^{k+α}$ with $k+α>2…
These notes are the basis of a course given at the Institut Henri Poincare in September 2014. We survey some recent results related to the geometric analysis of hypoelliptic diffusion operators on totally geodesic Riemannian foliations. We also give new applications to the study of hypocoercive estimates for Kolmogorov type operators.
We consider complete Riemannian manifolds which satisfy a weighted Poincarè inequality and have the Ricci curvature bounded below in terms of the weight function. When the weight function has a non-zero limit at infinity, the structure of this class of manifolds at infinity are studied and certain splitting result is obtained. Our result can be viewed as an improvement of Li-Wang's result in \cite{LW3}.
Consider a proper geodesic metric space $(X,d)$ equipped with a Borel measure $μ.$ We establish a family of uniform Poincaré inequalities on $(X,d,μ)$ if it satisfies a local Poincaré inequality ($P_{loc}$) and a condition on growth of volume. Consequently if $μ$ is doubling and supports $(P_{loc})$ then it satisfies a $(σ,β,σ)$-Poincaré inequality. If $(X,d,μ)$ is a $δ$-hyperbolic space then using the volume comparison theorem in \cite{BCS} we obtain a uniform Poincaré inequality with exponential growth of the Poincaré constant. If $X$ is the universal cover of a compact $CD(K,\infty)$ space …
In those lecture notes, we review some applications of heat semigroups methods in Riemannian and sub-Riemannian geometry. The notes contain parts of courses taught at Purdue University, Institut Henri Poincaré, Levico Summer School and Tata Institute.
For sub-Riemannian manifolds with a chosen complement, we first establish the derivative formula and integration by parts formula on path space with respect to a natural gradient operator. By using these formulae, we then show that upper and lower bounds of the horizontal Ricci curvature correspond to functional inequalities on path space analogous to what has been established in Riemannian geometry by Aaron Naber, such as gradient inequalities, log-Sobolev and Poincaré inequalities.
In this paper we shall study smooth submanifolds immersed in a k-step Carnot group G of homogeneous dimension Q. Among other results, we shall prove an isoperimetric inequality for the case of a $C^2$-smooth compact hypersurface S with - or without - boundary $\partial S$; S and $\partial S$ are endowed with their homogeneous measures, actually equivalent to the intrinsic (Q-1)-dimensional and (Q-2)-dimensional Hausdorff measures with respect to some homogeneous metric $\varrho$ on G; see Section 5. This generalizes a classical inequality, involving the mean curvature of the hypersurface, prov…
Given a closed Riemannian manifold $(M, g_M)$ of dimension $n \geq 3$, we prove the existence of a conformally compact Einstein metric $g_{+}$ defined on a collar neighborhood $M \times (0,1]$ whose conformal infinity is $[g_M]$.
We study conformal $Spin$-subgeometry of submanifolds in a semi-Riemannian $Spin$-manifold, focusing on conformal $Spin$-manifolds $(M,[h])$ and their Poincaré-Einstein metrics $(X,g_+)$. Our approach is based on the spectral theory of Dirac operator in the ambient $Spin$-manifold, and associated spinor valued meromorphic family of distributions with residues given by the residue family operators $\slashed{D}_N^{res}(h;λ)$ on spinors. We develop basic aspects and properties of $\slashed{D}_N^{res}(h;λ)$ including conformal covariance, factorization properties by conformally covariant operators…
Here we show existence of numerous subsets of Euclidean and metric spaces that, despite having empty interior, still support Poincaré inequalities. Most importantly, our methods do not depend on any rectilinear or self-similar structure of the underlying space. We instead employ the notion of uniform domain of Martio and Sarvas. Our condition relies on the measure density of such subsets, as well as the regularity and relative separation of their boundary components. In doing so, our results hold true for metric spaces equipped with doubling measures and Poincaré inequalities in general, and f…
We derive weighted log-Sobolev inequalities from a class of super Poincaré inequalities. As an application, the Talagrand inequality with larger distances are obtained. In particular, on a complete connected Riemannian manifold, we prove that the $\log^\dd$-Sobolev inequality with $\dd\in (1,2)$ implies the $L^{2/(2-\dd)}$-transportation cost inequality $$W^\rr_{2/(2-\dd)}(fμ,μ)^{2/(2-\dd)}\le Cμ(f\log f), μ(f)=1, f\ge 0$$ for some constant $C>0$, and they are equivalent if the curvature of the corresponding generator is bounded below. Weighted log-Sobolev and entropy-cost inequalities are als…
In this paper, we obtain results on rigidity of complete Riemannian manifolds with weighted Poincaré inequality. As an application, we prove that if $M$ is a complete $\frac{n-2}{n}$-stable minimal hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with $n\geq 3$ and has bounded norm of the second fundamental form, then $M$ must either have only one end or be a catenoid.
This paper contains some vanishing theorems for $L^2$ harmonic forms on complete Riemannian manifolds with a weighted Poincaré inequality and a certain lower bound of the curvature. The results are in the spirit of Li-Wang and Lam, but without assumptions of sign and growth rate of the weight function, so they can be applied to complete stable hypersurfaces.
We give a notion of BV function on an oriented manifold where a volume form and a family of lower semicontinuous quadratic forms $G_p: T_pM \to [0,\infty]$ are given. When we consider sub-Riemannian manifolds, our definition coincide with the one given in the more general context of metric measure spaces which are doubling and support a Poincaré inequality. We then focus on finite perimeter sets, i.e., sets whose characteristic function is BV, in sub-Riemannian manifolds. Under an assumption on the nilpotent approximation, we prove a blowup theorem, generalizing the one obtained for step-2 Car…
Using the curvature-dimension inequality proved in Part~I, we look at consequences of this inequality in terms of the interaction between the sub-Riemannian geometry and the heat semigroup $P_t$ corresponding to the sub-Laplacian. We give bounds for the gradient, entropy, a Poincaré inequality and a Li-Yau type inequality. These results require that the gradient of $P_t f$ remains uniformly bounded whenever the gradient of $f$ is bounded and we give several sufficient conditions for this to hold.
It is known that a simply connected Riemann surface satisfies the isoperimetric equality if and only if it has constant Gaussian curvature. In this article, we show that Randers Poincaré disc satisfies the isoperimetric equality with respect to different volume forms. These metrics do not necessarily have constant (negative) flag curvature. Thus we show that the Osserman's result \cite{RO} in the Riemannian case can not be extended to the corresponding Finslerian case.
In this paper we provide two new characterizations of real hyperbolic $n$-space using the Poincaré exponent of a discrete group and the volume growth entropy. The first characterization is in the space of Hilbert metrics and generalizes a result of Crampon. The second is in the space of Riemannian metrics with Ricci curvature bounded below and generalizes a result of Ledrappier and Wang.
Let $Σ$ be a complete Riemannian manifold with the volume doubling property and the uniform Neumann-Poincar$\mathrm{\acute{e}}$ inequality. We show that any positive minimal graphic function on $Σ$ is a constant.
We present a definition of Riemannian manifold in noncommutative geometry. Using products of unbounded Kasparov modules, we show one can obtain such Riemannian manifolds from noncommutative spin^c manifolds; and conversely, in the presence of a spin^c structure. We also show how to obtain an analogue of Kasparov's fundamental class for a Riemannian manifold, and the associated notion of Poincaré duality. Along the way we clarify the bimodule and first-order conditions for spectral triples.
We give a differential-geometric construction of Calabi-Yau fourfolds by the `doubling' method, which was introduced in \cite{DY14} to construct Calabi-Yau threefolds. We also give examples of Calabi-Yau fourfolds from toric Fano fourfolds. Ingredients in our construction are \emph{admissible pairs}, which were first dealt with by Kovalev in \cite{K03}. Here in this paper an admissible pair $(\overline{X},D)$ consists of a compact Kähler manifold $\overline{X}$ and a smooth anticanonical divisor $D$ on $\overline{X}$. If two admissible pairs $(\overline{X}_1,D_1)$ and $(\overline{X}_2,D_2)$ wi…
Given a smooth positive function $f$ defined on the unit circle satisfying a simple condition, we obtain a Poincaré-type inequality for an arbitrary function $u$ whose weighted average with respect to $f$ is zero. The proof uses Fenchel's theorem about the total curvature of closed space curves in an essential way. Next we consider the generalization of this result to higher dimensional closed Riemannian manifold and reduce it to an eigenvalue problem. Finally, we point out that even though such Poincaré-type inequality still holds, the best constant $λ_1(f)$ might be different from the first …
In this paper, we show several vanishing type theorems for $p$-harmonic $\ell$-forms on Riemannian manifolds ($p\geq2$). First of all, we consider complete non-compact immersed submanifolds $M^n$ of ${N}^{n+m}$ with flat normal bundle, we prove that any $p$-harmonic $\ell$-forms on $M$ is trivial if $N$ has pure curvature tensor and $M$ satisfies some geometric condition. Then, we obtain a vanishing theorem on Riemannian manifolds with weighted Poincaré inequality. Final, we investigate complete simply connected, locally conformally flat Riemannian manifolds $M$ and point out that there is no …
We prove a sharp Poincaré inequality for subsets $Ω$ of (essentially non-branching) metric measure spaces satisfying the Measure Contraction Property $\textrm{MCP}(K,N)$, whose diameter is bounded above by $D$. This is achieved by identifying the corresponding one-dimensional model densities and a localization argument, ensuring that the Poincaré constant we obtain is best possible as a function of $K$, $N$ and $D$. Another new feature of our work is that we do not need to assume that $Ω$ is geodesically convex, by employing the geodesic hull of $Ω$ on the energy side of the Poincaré inequalit…
We establish various $L^{p}$ estimates for the Schrödinger operator $-Δ+V$ on Riemannian manifolds satisfying the doubling property and a Poincaré inequality, where $Δ$ is the Laplace-Beltrami operator and $V$ belongs to a reverse Hölder class. At the end of this paper we apply our result on Lie groups with polynomial growth.
