In this paper, we prove that the infimum of the mean curvature is zero for a translating solitons of hypersurface in $\re^{n+k}$. We give some conditions under which a complete hypersurface translating soliton is stable. We show that if the norm of its mean curvature is less than one, then the weighted volume may have exponent growth. We also study the Dirichlet problem for graphic translating solitons in higher codimensions.
In the present article we obtain classification results and topological obstructions for the existence of translating solitons of the mean curvature flow.
In this paper, we prove a monotonicity formula and some Bernstein type results for translating solitons of hypersurfaces in $\re^{n+1}$, giving some conditions under which a trantranslating soliton is a hyperplane. We also show a gap theorem for the translating soliton of hypersurfaces in $R^{n+k}$, namely, if the $L^n$ norm of the second fundamental form of the soliton is small enough, then it is a hyperplane.
In this paper, we study the existence, uniqueness and asymptotic behavior of rotationally symmetric translating solitons of the mean curvature flow in Minkowski space. We also study the asymptotic behavior and the strict convexity of general solitons of such flows.
We study new examples of translating solitons of the mean curvature flow, especially in Minkowski space. We consider for this purpose manifolds admitting submersions and cohomegeneity one actions by isometries on suitable open subsets. This general setting also covers the classical Euclidean examples. As an application, we completely classify timelike, invariant translating solitons by rotations and boosts in Minkowski space.
In this work, we propose a new evolving geometric flow (called translating mean curvature flow) for the translating solitons of hypersurfaces in $R^{n+1}$. We study the basic properties, such as positivity preserving property, of the translating mean curvature flow. The Dirichlet problem for the graphical translating mean curvature flow is studied and the global existence of the flow and the convergence property are also considered.
In this paper, we study the properties of potential function of the translating soliton $M$ in $R^{n+1}$ and the volume growth of the intersection of Euclidean balls with $M$. We give a condition to obtain the Bernstein theorem for the translating solitons. We also give an outline of a simple proof of the Bernstein theorem due to Bombieri-De Giorgi-Miranda.
In this short note we study Bernstein's type theorem of translating solitons whose images of their Gauss maps are contained in compact subsets in an open hemisphere of the standard $\mathbf{S}^n$ (see Theorem 1.1). As a special case we get a classical Bernstein's type theorem in minimal submanifolds in $\mathbf{R}^{n+1}$ (see Corollary 1.2).
We address the asymptotic behavior of the $α$-Gauss curvature flow, for $α>1/2$, with initial data a complete non-compact convex hypersurface which is contained in a cylinder of bounded cross section. We show that the flow converges, as $t \to +\infty$, locally smoothly to a translating soliton which is uniquely determined by the asymptotic cylinder of the initial hypersurface.
We prove interior gradient estimate and second order estimate for the $Q_k$-flow and $Q_k$-translators in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. In addition, we show that $Q_k$-translator which are asymptotic to $o(|x|)$ cannot exist.
In this work we show that $2$-dimensional, simply connected, translating solitons of the mean curvature flow embedded in a slab of $\mathbb{R}^3$ with entropy strictly less than $3$ must be mean convex and thus, thanks to a result by J. Spruck and L. Xiao, are convex. Recently, such $2$-dimensional convex translating solitons have been completely classified by Hoffman, Ilmanen, Martín and White, up to an ambient isometry, as vertical plane, (tilted) grim reaper cylinders, $Δ$-wings and bowl translater. These are all contained in a slab, except for the rotationally symmetric bowl translater. Ne…
In this paper we prove that two-dimensional translating solitons in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with finite $L$-index are homeomorphic to a plane or a cylinder and that a two-dimensional self-expander with finite $L$-index and sub exponential weighted volume growth has finite topology. We also prove that translating solitons and self-expanders have finite topology, provided the bottom of the spectrum of the $L$-stability operator is bounded from below and their weighted volume have subexponential growth.
We obtain a rigidity result of symplectic translating solitons via the complex phase map. It indicates that we can remove the bounded second fundamental form assumption for symplectic translating solitons in [13].
In this paper, we compute the first and second variation formulas for the F-functional of translating solitons and study the Hamiltonian L-stability of Lagrangian translating solitons. We prove that any Lagrangian translating soliton is Hamiltonian L-stable.
We show that any complete $f$-stable translating soliton $M$ admits no codimension one cycle which does not disconnect $M$. As a corollary, it follows that any two dimensional complete $f$-stable translating soliton has genus zero.
The main result of this paper is a convexity estimate for translating solitons of extrinsic geometric flows which evolve under a $1$-homogeneous concave function in the principal curvatures. In addition, we show examples of these hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ for particular functions.
We construct Lagrangian translating solitons by desingularizing the intersection points between Lagrangian Grim Reaper cylinders with the same phase using special Lagrangian Lawlor necks. The resulting Lagrangian translating solitons could have arbitrarily many ends and non-contractible loops.
We give an analytic approach to the translating soliton equation with a special emphasis in the study of the Dirichlet problem in convex domains of the plane.
We prove stability of rotationally symmetric translating solutions to mean curvature flow. For initial data that converge spatially at infinity to such a soliton, we obtain convergence for large times to that soliton without imposing any decay rates.
Motivated by Ilmanen's correspondence, we present an explicit solution to the prescribed Hoffman-Osserman Gauss map problem for non-minimal translators to the mean curvature flow in Euclidean 4-space. We propose a conjecture on the non-existence of Jenkins-Serrin type unit-speed graphical translators.
We study translating soliton solutions to the flow by powers of the curvature of curves in the plane. We characterize these solitons as critical curves for functionals depending on the curvature. More precisely, translating solitons to the flow by powers of the curvature are shown to be generalized elastic curves. In particular, focusing on the curve shortening flow, we deduce a new variational characterization of the grim reaper curve.
In this paper, we investigate the parametric version and non-parametric version of rigidity theorem of spacelike translating solitons in pseudo-Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{m+n}_{n}$. Firstly, we classify $m$-dimensional complete spacelike translating solitons in $\mathbb{R}^{m+n}_{n}$ by affine technique and classical gradient estimates, and prove the only complete spacelike translating solitons in $\mathbb{R}^{m+n}_{n}$ are the spacelike $m$-planes. This result provides another proof of a nonexistence theorem for complete spacelike translating solitons in \cite{C-Q}, and a simple proof of ri…
This paper establishes geometric obstructions to the existence of complete, properly embedded, mean curvature flow self-translating solitons $Σ^n\subseteq \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, generalizing previously known non-existence conditions such as cylindrical boundedness.
We prove that any complete immersed two-sided mean convex translating soliton $Σ\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ for the mean curvature flow is convex. As a corollary it follows that an entire mean convex graphical translating soliton in $\mathbb{R}^3$ is the axisymmetric "bowl soliton". We also show that if the mean curvature of $Σ$ tends to zero at infinity, then $Σ$ can be represented as an entire graph and so is the "bowl soliton". Finally we classify all locally strictly convex graphical translating solitons defined over strip regions.
We study some basic problems of translating solitons: the volume growth, generalized maximum principle, Gauss maps and certain functions related to the Gauss maps, finally we carry out point-wise estimates and integral estimates for the squared norm of the second fundamental form. Those estimates give rigidity theorems for translating solitons in the Euclidean space in higher codimension.
In this paper, we construct finite blow-up examples for symplectic mean curvature flows and we study properties of symplectic translating solitons. We prove that, the Kähler angle $α$ of a symplectic translating soliton with $\max |A|=1$ satisfies that $\sup |α|>\fracπ{4}\frac{|T|}{|T|+1}$ where $T$ is the direction in which the surface transltes.
We prove that any complete immersed globally orientable uniformly 2-convex translating soliton $Σ\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ for the mean curvature flow is locally strictly convex. It follows that a uniformly 2-convex entire graphical translating soliton in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1},\, n\geq 3 $ is the axisymmetric "bowl soliton".
We characterize all ruled translating solitons in Minkowski 3-space. In contrast to the Euclidean space, we find ruled translating solitons that are not cylindrical. These surfaces appear when the vector field that defines the rulings, viewed as a curve, is a lightlike straight line. We also classify all cylindrical translating solitons, obtaining surfaces that can be considered as analogous to the grim reapers of Euclidean space, but also other surfaces which have no a counterpart in the Euclidean space.
We prove that the hyperplanes parallel to ${\bf e}_{n+1}$ are the unique examples of translating solitons $C^1-$asymptotic to two half-hyperplanes outside a vertical cylinder in $\R^{n+1}$.
We prove that if a translating soliton can be expressed as the sum of two curves and one of these curves is planar, then the other curve is also planar and consequently the surface must be a plane or a grim reaper. We also investigate translating solitons that can be locally written as the product of two functions of one variable. We extend the results in Lorentz-Minkowski space.
In this paper we study the Dirichlet problem of translating mean curvature equations over domains in Riemannian manifolds with dimension $n$. Imitating the generalized solution theory of Miranda-Giusti, we define a new conformal area functional and a generalized solution to this Dirichlet problem. The existence of generalized solutions to this problem on bounded Lipschitz domains is established. If the domain is mean convex and bounded with $C^2$ boundary, its closure does not contain any closed minimal hypersurface except a singular set with its Hausdorff dimension at most $n-7$ and the bound…
In this paper, we prove that the translating solitons of the mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^4$ which arise as blow up limit of embedded, mean convex mean curvature flow must have $SO(2)$ symmetry.
We construct new examples of self-similar solutions and translating solitons for Lagrangian mean curvature flow by extending the method of Joyce, Lee and Tsui. Those examples include examples in which the Lagrangian angle is arbitrarily small as the examples of Joyce, Lee and Tsui.
In this paper we provide a Weierstrass representation formula for translating solitons and singular minimal surfaces in ${\mathbb{R}^3}$. As application we study when the euclidean Gauss map has a harmonic argument and solve a general Cauchy problem in this class of surfaces.
We consider translating solitons to flows by positive powers $α$ of the Gaussian curvature -- called $K^α$-flows -- in Riemannian products $M\times\mathbb R.$ We prove that, when $M$ is the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^n,$ the sphere $\mathbb S^n,$ or one of the hyperbolic spaces $\mathbb{H}_{\mathbb F}^m,$ there exist complete rotational translating solitons to $K^α$-flow in $M\times\mathbb R$ for certain values of $α.$
We prove the existence of classical solutions to the Dirichlet problem for the $α$-translating soliton equation defined in a strip of $\r^2$. We use the Perron method where a family of grim reapers are employed as barriers for solving the Dirichlet problem when the boundary data is formed by two copies of a convex function.
The purpose of these notes is to provide an introduction to those who want to learn more about translating solitons for the mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^3$, particularly those which are complete graphs over domains in $\mathbb{R}^2$. In this paper we describe a full classification of complete translating graphs in $\mathbb{R}^3$.
In this paper, we recall some general properties and theorems about Translating Solitons in Semi Riemannian Manifolds. Moreover, we investigate those which are invariant by the action of a Lie group of isometries of the ambient space, by paying attention to the behaviour close to the singular orbit (if any) and at infinity. Then, we provide some related examples.
We recall the notion of (vertical) translating solitons in a product of a semi-Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ and the real line. Mainly, we restrict our attention to those which are the graph of a smooth function. When dealing with submersions, we show a criteria to lift (or project) translating solitons from the base manifold to the total space (or viceversa). In particular, manifolds foliated by codimension 1 orbits of a Lie group action give rise to such solitons, up to solving a first-order ordinary differential equation. This gives us explicit criteria under which the graph of a function is …
In this paper, we generalize a previous result to higher dimension. We prove that uniformly 3-convex translating solitons of mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ which arise as blow up limit of embedded, mean convex mean curvature flow must have $SO(n-1)$ symmetry.
In this paper we obtain rigidity results and obstructions on the topology at infinity of translating solitons of the mean curvature flow in the Euclidean space. Our approach relies on the theory of f-minimal hypersurfaces.
Using certain solutions of the curve shortening flow, including self-shrinking and self-expanding curves or spirals, we construct and characterize many new examples of translating solitons for mean curvature flow in complex Euclidean plane. They generalize the Joyce, Lee and Tsui ones \cite{JLT} in dimension two. The simplest (non trivial) example in our family is characterized as the only (non totally geodesic) Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian translating soliton for mean curvature flow in complex Euclidean plane.
In this paper we study the theory of self translating solitons of the mean curvature flow of immersed surfaces in the product space $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$. We relate this theory to the one of manifolds with density, and exploit this relation by regarding these translating solitons as minimal surfaces in a conformal metric space. Explicit examples of these surfaces are constructed, and we study the asymptotic behaviour of the existing rotationally symmetric examples. Finally, we prove some uniqueness and non-existence theorems.
A $λ$-translating soliton with density vector $\vec{v}$ is a surface $Σ$ in Euclidean space ${\mathbb R}^3$ whose mean curvature $H$ satisfies $2H=2λ+\langle N,\vec{v}\rangle$, where $N$ is the Gauss map of $Σ$. In this article we study the shape of a compact $λ$-translating soliton in terms of its boundary. If $Γ$ is a given closed curve, we deduce under what conditions on $λ$ there exists a compact $λ$-translating soliton $Σ$ with boundary $Γ$ and we provide estimates of the surface area in relation with the height of $Σ$. Finally we study the shape of $Σ$ related with the one of $Γ$, in par…
Given a unit vector $\textbf{v}\in\mathbb{R}^3$ and $λ\in\mathbb{R}$, a translating $λ$-soliton is a surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ whose mean curvature $H$ satisfies $H=\langle N,\textbf{v}\rangle+λ,\ |\textbf{v}|=1$, where $N$ is the Gauss map of the surface. In this paper, we extend the phenomenon of instability of Plateau-Rayleigh for translating $λ$-solitons of cylindrical type, proving that long pieces of these surfaces are unstable. We will provide explicit bounds on the length of these surfaces. It will be also proved that if a translating $λ$-soliton is a graph, then it is a minimizer of t…
In this paper we study solitons invariant with respect to the flow generated by a complete Killing vector field in a ambient Riemannian manifold. A special case occurs when the ambient manifold is the Riemannian product $(\mathbb{R} \times P, {\rm d}t^2+g_0)$ and the Killing field is $X=\partial_t$. Similarly to what happens in the Euclidean setting, we call them translating solitons. We see that a translating soliton in $\mathbb{R} \times P$ can be seen as a minimal submanifold for a weighted volume functional. Moreover we show that this kind of solitons appear in a natural way in the context…
In this paper, we consider a translating soliton for the inverse mean curvature flow given as a graph of a function on a domain in a unit sphere whose level sets give isoparametric foliation. First, we show that such function is given as a composition of an isoparametric function on the unit sphere and a function which is given as a solution of a certain ordinary differential equation. Further, we analyze the shape of the graphs of the solutions of the ordinary differential equation. This analysis leads to the classification of the shape of such translating solitons for the inverse mean curvat…
We study volume growth, entropy and stability for translating solitons of mean curvature flow. First, we prove that every complete properly immersed translator has at least linear volume growth. Then, by using Huisken's monotonicity formula, we compute the entropy of the grim reaper and the bowl solitons. We also give a curvature estimate for translators in $\mathbf{R}^3$ with small entropy. Finally, we estimate the spectrum of the stability operator $L$ for translators and give a rigidity result of $L$-stable translators.
In this paper we are dealing with two classes of mean curvature type problems that generalize the translating soliton problem. A first result proves that the solutions to these problems have unique interior critical points. Using this uniqueness result, we next derive a priori $C^0$ and $C^1$ estimates for the solutions to these problems, by means of some minimum principles for appropriate $P$-functions, in the sense of L.E. Payne.
