We prove stability of rotationally symmetric translating solutions to mean curvature flow. For initial data that converge spatially at infinity to such a soliton, we obtain convergence for large times to that soliton without imposing any decay rates.
In this work, we propose a new evolving geometric flow (called translating mean curvature flow) for the translating solitons of hypersurfaces in $R^{n+1}$. We study the basic properties, such as positivity preserving property, of the translating mean curvature flow. The Dirichlet problem for the graphical translating mean curvature flow is studied and the global existence of the flow and the convergence property are also considered.
In the present article we obtain classification results and topological obstructions for the existence of translating solitons of the mean curvature flow.
We prove some non-existence theorems for translating solutions to Lagrangian mean curvature flow. More precisely, we show that translating solutions with an $L^2$ bound on the mean curvature are planes and that almost-calibrated translating solutions which are static are also planes. Recent work of D. Joyce, Y.-I. Lee, and M.-P. Tsui, shows that these conditions are optimal.
In this paper, we study the convexity, interior gradient estimate, Liouville type theorem and asymptotic behavior at infinity of translating solutions to mean curvature flow as well as the nonlinear flow by powers of the mean curvature.
We describe a construction of complete embedded self-translating surfaces under mean curvature flow by desingularizing the intersection of a finite family of grim reapers in general position.
In this paper, we study the existence, uniqueness and asymptotic behavior of rotationally symmetric translating solitons of the mean curvature flow in Minkowski space. We also study the asymptotic behavior and the strict convexity of general solitons of such flows.
We address the asymptotic behavior of the $α$-Gauss curvature flow, for $α>1/2$, with initial data a complete non-compact convex hypersurface which is contained in a cylinder of bounded cross section. We show that the flow converges, as $t \to +\infty$, locally smoothly to a translating soliton which is uniquely determined by the asymptotic cylinder of the initial hypersurface.
In this short note we study Bernstein's type theorem of translating solitons whose images of their Gauss maps are contained in compact subsets in an open hemisphere of the standard $\mathbf{S}^n$ (see Theorem 1.1). As a special case we get a classical Bernstein's type theorem in minimal submanifolds in $\mathbf{R}^{n+1}$ (see Corollary 1.2).
We consider strictly convex hypersurfaces which are evolving by the non-parametric logarithmic Gauss curvature flow subject to a Neumann boundary condition. Solutions are shown to converge smoothly to hypersurfaces moving by translation. In particular, for bounded domains we prove that convex functions with prescribed normal derivative satisfy a uniform oscillation estimate.
In this paper we construct complete convex hypersurfaces in $\mathbb R^{n+1}$ which translate under the flow by powers $α\in (0, \frac1{n+2})$ of the Gauss curvature. The level set of each solution is asymptotic to a shrinking soliton for the flow by power $\frac α{1-α}$ of the Gauss curvature in $\mathbb R^n$. For example, our construction reveals the existence of translators whose level set converges to the sphere, simplex, hypercube and so on. The translating solitons exist as a family whose parameters correspond to Jacobi fields, solutions to linearized equation around the asymptotic profi…
In this paper we prove that two-dimensional translating solitons in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with finite $L$-index are homeomorphic to a plane or a cylinder and that a two-dimensional self-expander with finite $L$-index and sub exponential weighted volume growth has finite topology. We also prove that translating solitons and self-expanders have finite topology, provided the bottom of the spectrum of the $L$-stability operator is bounded from below and their weighted volume have subexponential growth.
In this paper, we prove the existence of classical solutions of the Dirichlet problem for a class of quasi-linear elliptic equations on unbounded domains like a cone or a U-type domain. This problem comes from the study of mean curvature flow and its generalization, the flow by powers of mean curvature. Our approach is a modified version of the classical Perron method, where the solutions to the minimal surface equation are used as sub-solutions and a family auxiliary functions are constructed as super-solutions.
In this paper, we prove that the infimum of the mean curvature is zero for a translating solitons of hypersurface in $\re^{n+k}$. We give some conditions under which a complete hypersurface translating soliton is stable. We show that if the norm of its mean curvature is less than one, then the weighted volume may have exponent growth. We also study the Dirichlet problem for graphic translating solitons in higher codimensions.
We prove that any complete immersed two-sided mean convex translating soliton $Σ\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ for the mean curvature flow is convex. As a corollary it follows that an entire mean convex graphical translating soliton in $\mathbb{R}^3$ is the axisymmetric "bowl soliton". We also show that if the mean curvature of $Σ$ tends to zero at infinity, then $Σ$ can be represented as an entire graph and so is the "bowl soliton". Finally we classify all locally strictly convex graphical translating solitons defined over strip regions.
The aim of this work is studying translating graphs by mean curvature flow in $\Real^3$. We prove non-existence of complete translating graphs over bounded domains in $\Real^2$. Furthermore, we show that there are only three types of complete translating graphs in $\Real^3$; entire graphs, graphs between two vertical planes, and graphs in one side of a plane. In the last two types, graphs are asymptotic to planes next to their boundaries. We also prove stability of translating graphs and then we obtain a pointwise curvature bound for translating graphs in $\Real^3$.
In this paper, we prove that the translating solitons of the mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^4$ which arise as blow up limit of embedded, mean convex mean curvature flow must have $SO(2)$ symmetry.
We construct Lagrangian translating solitons by desingularizing the intersection points between Lagrangian Grim Reaper cylinders with the same phase using special Lagrangian Lawlor necks. The resulting Lagrangian translating solitons could have arbitrarily many ends and non-contractible loops.
In this paper, we construct finite blow-up examples for symplectic mean curvature flows and we study properties of symplectic translating solitons. We prove that, the Kähler angle $α$ of a symplectic translating soliton with $\max |A|=1$ satisfies that $\sup |α|>\fracπ{4}\frac{|T|}{|T|+1}$ where $T$ is the direction in which the surface transltes.
We construct new examples of self-similar solutions and translating solitons for Lagrangian mean curvature flow by extending the method of Joyce, Lee and Tsui. Those examples include examples in which the Lagrangian angle is arbitrarily small as the examples of Joyce, Lee and Tsui.
In this paper, we generalize a previous result to higher dimension. We prove that uniformly 3-convex translating solitons of mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ which arise as blow up limit of embedded, mean convex mean curvature flow must have $SO(n-1)$ symmetry.
We prove that any complete immersed globally orientable uniformly 2-convex translating soliton $Σ\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ for the mean curvature flow is locally strictly convex. It follows that a uniformly 2-convex entire graphical translating soliton in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1},\, n\geq 3 $ is the axisymmetric "bowl soliton".
The purpose of these notes is to provide an introduction to those who want to learn more about translating solitons for the mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^3$, particularly those which are complete graphs over domains in $\mathbb{R}^2$. In this paper we describe a full classification of complete translating graphs in $\mathbb{R}^3$.
We study some basic problems of translating solitons: the volume growth, generalized maximum principle, Gauss maps and certain functions related to the Gauss maps, finally we carry out point-wise estimates and integral estimates for the squared norm of the second fundamental form. Those estimates give rigidity theorems for translating solitons in the Euclidean space in higher codimension.
In this paper we study the Dirichlet problem of translating mean curvature equations over domains in Riemannian manifolds with dimension $n$. Imitating the generalized solution theory of Miranda-Giusti, we define a new conformal area functional and a generalized solution to this Dirichlet problem. The existence of generalized solutions to this problem on bounded Lipschitz domains is established. If the domain is mean convex and bounded with $C^2$ boundary, its closure does not contain any closed minimal hypersurface except a singular set with its Hausdorff dimension at most $n-7$ and the bound…
We consider translating solitons to flows by positive powers $α$ of the Gaussian curvature -- called $K^α$-flows -- in Riemannian products $M\times\mathbb R.$ We prove that, when $M$ is the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^n,$ the sphere $\mathbb S^n,$ or one of the hyperbolic spaces $\mathbb{H}_{\mathbb F}^m,$ there exist complete rotational translating solitons to $K^α$-flow in $M\times\mathbb R$ for certain values of $α.$
In this paper we obtain rigidity results and obstructions on the topology at infinity of translating solitons of the mean curvature flow in the Euclidean space. Our approach relies on the theory of f-minimal hypersurfaces.
Using certain solutions of the curve shortening flow, including self-shrinking and self-expanding curves or spirals, we construct and characterize many new examples of translating solitons for mean curvature flow in complex Euclidean plane. They generalize the Joyce, Lee and Tsui ones \cite{JLT} in dimension two. The simplest (non trivial) example in our family is characterized as the only (non totally geodesic) Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian translating soliton for mean curvature flow in complex Euclidean plane.
In this work, we study graphs in $\M^n\times\Real$ that are evolving by the mean curvature flow over a bounded domain on $\M^n$, with prescribed contact angle in the boundary. We prove that solutions converge to translating surfaces in $\M^n\times\Real$. Also, for a Riemannian manifold $\M^2$ with negative Gaussian curvature at each point, we show non-existence of complete vertically translating graphs in $\M^2\times\Real$.
In this paper we study the theory of self translating solitons of the mean curvature flow of immersed surfaces in the product space $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$. We relate this theory to the one of manifolds with density, and exploit this relation by regarding these translating solitons as minimal surfaces in a conformal metric space. Explicit examples of these surfaces are constructed, and we study the asymptotic behaviour of the existing rotationally symmetric examples. Finally, we prove some uniqueness and non-existence theorems.
In this paper, we study the rigidity results of complete graphical translating hypersurfaces when the translating direction is not in the graphical direction. We proved that any entire graphical translating surface in the translating direction not parallel to the graphical one is flat if either the translating surface is mean convex or the entropy of the translating surface is smaller than $2$. For higher dimensional case, we show that the same conclusion holds if the graphical translating hypersurface satisfies certain growth condition.
We study translating soliton solutions to the flow by powers of the curvature of curves in the plane. We characterize these solitons as critical curves for functionals depending on the curvature. More precisely, translating solitons to the flow by powers of the curvature are shown to be generalized elastic curves. In particular, focusing on the curve shortening flow, we deduce a new variational characterization of the grim reaper curve.
In this paper, we consider a translating soliton for the inverse mean curvature flow given as a graph of a function on a domain in a unit sphere whose level sets give isoparametric foliation. First, we show that such function is given as a composition of an isoparametric function on the unit sphere and a function which is given as a solution of a certain ordinary differential equation. Further, we analyze the shape of the graphs of the solutions of the ordinary differential equation. This analysis leads to the classification of the shape of such translating solitons for the inverse mean curvat…
We construct new examples of self-translating surfaces for the mean curvature flow from a periodic configuration with finitely many grim reaper cylinders in each period. Because this work is an extension of the author's article on the desingularization of a finite family of grim reaper cylinders, we simply discuss the ideas of the construction and here prove only that the periodic configuration has the necessary flexibility. These examples show that self-translating surfaces do not necessarily have quadratic volume growth rate in contrast to self-shrinking surfaces.
We derive local $C^{2}$ estimates for complete non-compact translating solitons of the Gauss curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^3$ which are graphs over a convex domain $Ω$. This is closely is related to deriving local $C^{1,1}$ estimates for the degenerate Monge-Ampére equation. As a result, given a weakly convex bounded domain $Ω$, we establish the existence of a $C^{1,1}_{\text{loc}}$ translating soliton. In particular, when the boundary $\partial Ω$ has a line segment, we show the existence of flat sides of the translator from a local a'priori non-degeneracy estimate near the free-boundary.
In this article we prove two non-existence results for translating solitons of the mean curvature flow (translators for short) in $\mathbb{R}^{m+1}$. We also obtain an upper bound to the maximum height that a compact embedded translator in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ can achieve. On the other hand, we study graphical perturbations of translators, showing that asymptotic graphical perturbations of a graph translator of revolution remain a hypersurface of revolution. Finally, we prove that compact translators that lie between two parallel planes inherit the symmetries of their boundaries curves.
In this paper, we compute the first and second variation formulas for the F-functional of translating solitons and study the Hamiltonian L-stability of Lagrangian translating solitons. We prove that any Lagrangian translating soliton is Hamiltonian L-stable.
A translating soliton is a hypersurface $M$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ such that the family $M_t= M- t \,\mathbf{e}_{n+1}$ is a mean curvature flow, i.e., such that normal component of the velocity at each point is equal to the mean curvature at that point $\mathbf{H}=\mathbf{e}_{n+1}^{\perp}.$ In this paper we obtain a characterization of hyperplanes which are parallel to $\mathbf{e}_{n+1}$ and the family of tilted grim reaper cylinders as the only translating solitons in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ which are $C^1$-asymptotic to two half-hyperplanes outside a non-vertical cylinder. This result was proven f…
In this paper, we study entire translating solutions $u(x)$ to a mean curvature flow equation in Minkowski space. We show that if $Σ=\{(x, u(x))| x\in\mathbb{R}^n\}$ is a strictly spacelike hypersurface, then $Σ$ reduces to a strictly convex rank k soliton in $\mathbb{R}^{k, 1}$ (after splitting off trivial factors) whose "blowdown" converges to a multiple $λ\in(0, 1)$ of a positively homogeneous degree one convex function in $\mathbb{R}^k$. We also show that there is nonuniqueness as the rotationally symmetric solution may be perturbed to a solution by an arbitrary smooth order one perturbati…
In this paper, for the Lorentz manifold $M^{2}\times\mathbb{R}$, with $M^{2}$ a $2$-dimensional complete surface with nonnegative Gaussian curvature, we investigate its space-like graphs over compact strictly convex domains in $M^{2}$, which are evolving by the non-parametric mean curvature flow with prescribed contact angle boundary condition, and show that solutions converge to ones moving only by translation.
We describe all possible self-similar motions of immersed hypersurfaces in Euclidean space under the mean curvature flow and derive the corresponding hypersurface equations. Then we present a new two-parameter family of immersed helicoidal surfaces that rotate/translate with constant velocity under the flow. We look at their limiting behaviour as the pitch of the helicoidal motion goes to 0 and compare it with the limiting behaviour of the classical helicoidal minimal surfaces. Finally, we give a classification of the immersed cylinders in the family of constant mean curvature helicoidal surfa…
In this paper we study the classification of ancient convex solutions to the mean curvature flow in $\R^{n+1}$. An open problem related to the classification of type II singularities is whether a convex translating solution is $k$-rotationally symmetric for some integer $2\le k\le n$, namely whether its level set is a sphere or cylinder $S^{k-1}\times \R^{n-k}$. In this paper we give an affirmative answer for entire solutions in dimension 2. In high dimensions we prove that there exist non-rotationally symmetric, entire convex translating solutions, but the blow-down in space of any entire con…
In this paper, we can prove the existence of translating solutions to the nonparametric mean curvature flow with nonzero Neumann boundary data in a prescribed product manifold $M^{n}\times\mathbb{R}$, where $M^{n}$ is an $n$-dimensional ($n\geq2$) complete Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature, and $\mathbb{R}$ is the Euclidean $1$-space.
We study new examples of translating solitons of the mean curvature flow, especially in Minkowski space. We consider for this purpose manifolds admitting submersions and cohomegeneity one actions by isometries on suitable open subsets. This general setting also covers the classical Euclidean examples. As an application, we completely classify timelike, invariant translating solitons by rotations and boosts in Minkowski space.
In this paper, we prove that any mean curvature flow translator $Σ^2 \subset \mathbb{R}^3$ with finite total curvature and one end must be a plane. We also prove that if the translator $Σ$ has multiple ends, they are asymptotic to a plane $Π$ containing the direction of translation and can be written as graphs over $Π$. Finally, we determine that the ends of $Σ$ are strongly asymptotic to $Π$ and obtain quantitative estimates for their asymptotic behavior.
In this paper, we consider a translating soliton for the mean curvature flow starting from a graph of a function on a domain in a unit sphere which is constant along each leaf of isoparametric foliation. First, we show that such a function is given as a composition of an isoparametric function on the sphere and a function which is given as a solution of a certain ordinary differential equation. Further, we analyze the shape of the graphs of the solutions of the ordinary differential equation. This analysis leads to the classification of the shape of such translating solitons. Finally, we inves…
We construct many self-similar and translating solitons for Lagrangian mean curvature flow, including self-expanders and translating solitons with arbitrarily small oscillation on the Lagrangian angle. Our translating solitons play the same role as cigar solitons in Ricci flow, and are important in studying the regularity of Lagrangian mean curvature flow. Given two transverse Lagrangian planes R^n in C^n with sum of characteristic angles less than pi, we show there exists a Lagrangian self-expander asymptotic to this pair of planes. The Maslov class of these self-expanders is zero. Thus they …
Analogous to the bowl soliton of mean curvature flow, we construct rotationally symmetric translating solutions to a very large class of extrinsic curvature flows, namely those whose speeds are $α$-homogeneous ($α>0$), elliptic and symmetric with respect to the principal curvatures. We show that these solutions are necessarily convex, and give precise criteria for the speed functions which determine whether these translators are defined on all of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ or contained in a cylinder. For speeds that are nonzero when at least one of the principal curvatures is nonzero, we are also able t…
We prove, in all dimensions $n\geq 2$, that there exists a convex translator lying in a slab of width $π\secθ$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ (and in no smaller slab) if and only if $θ\in[0,\fracπ{2}]$. We also obtain convexity and regularity results for translators which admit appropriate symmetries and study the asymptotics and reflection symmetry of translators lying in slab regions.
