We consider strictly convex hypersurfaces which are evolving by the non-parametric logarithmic Gauss curvature flow subject to a Neumann boundary condition. Solutions are shown to converge smoothly to hypersurfaces moving by translation. In particular, for bounded domains we prove that convex functions with prescribed normal derivative satisfy a uniform oscillation estimate.
In this short note we study Bernstein's type theorem of translating solitons whose images of their Gauss maps are contained in compact subsets in an open hemisphere of the standard $\mathbf{S}^n$ (see Theorem 1.1). As a special case we get a classical Bernstein's type theorem in minimal submanifolds in $\mathbf{R}^{n+1}$ (see Corollary 1.2).
We address the asymptotic behavior of the $α$-Gauss curvature flow, for $α>1/2$, with initial data a complete non-compact convex hypersurface which is contained in a cylinder of bounded cross section. We show that the flow converges, as $t \to +\infty$, locally smoothly to a translating soliton which is uniquely determined by the asymptotic cylinder of the initial hypersurface.
In this paper we construct complete convex hypersurfaces in $\mathbb R^{n+1}$ which translate under the flow by powers $α\in (0, \frac1{n+2})$ of the Gauss curvature. The level set of each solution is asymptotic to a shrinking soliton for the flow by power $\frac α{1-α}$ of the Gauss curvature in $\mathbb R^n$. For example, our construction reveals the existence of translators whose level set converges to the sphere, simplex, hypercube and so on. The translating solitons exist as a family whose parameters correspond to Jacobi fields, solutions to linearized equation around the asymptotic profi…
We address the classification of ancient solutions to the Gauss curvature flow under the assumption that the solutions are contained in a cylinder of bounded cross section. For each cylinder of convex bounded cross-section, we show that there are only two ancient solutions which are asymptotic to this cylinder: the non-compact translating soliton and the compact oval solution obtained by gluing two translating solitons approaching each other from time $-\infty$ from two opposite ends.
Motivated by Ilmanen's correspondence, we present an explicit solution to the prescribed Hoffman-Osserman Gauss map problem for non-minimal translators to the mean curvature flow in Euclidean 4-space. We propose a conjecture on the non-existence of Jenkins-Serrin type unit-speed graphical translators.
In this paper we study the problem of prescribing the Gaussian curvature under a conformal change of the metric. We are concerned with the problem posed on a subdomain of the 2-sphere under Neumann boundary conditions of the conformal factor. If the area of the subdomain is greater than 2π, the associated energy functional is no longer bounded from below. We treat this case by using min-max techniques, giving a new existence result that generalizes and unifies previous work on the argument.
We prove Poisson upper bounds for the heat kernel of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator with variable H{ö}lder coefficients when the underlying domain is bounded and has a C 1+$κ$-boundary for some $κ$ > 0. We also prove a number of other results such as gradient estimates for heat kernels and Green functions G of elliptic operators with possibly complex-valued coefficients. We establish H{ö}lder continuity of $\nabla$ x $\nabla$ y G up to the boundary. These results are used to prove L p-estimates for commutators of Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators on the boundary of C 1+$κ$-domains. Such estima…
Given a domain $Ω$ of a complete Riemannian manifold $\mathcal{M}$ and define $\mathcal{A}$ to be the Laplacian with Neumann boundary condition on $Ω$. We prove that, under appropriate conditions, the corresponding heat kernel satisfies the Gaussian upper bound $$ h(t,x,y)\leq \frac{C}{\left[V\_Ω(x,\sqrt{t})V\_Ω(y,\sqrt{t})\right]^{1/2}}\left( 1+\frac{d^2(x,y)}{4t}\right)^δe^{-\frac{d^2(x,y)}{4t}},\;\; t\textgreater{}0,\; x,y\in Ω. $$ Here $d$ is the geodesic distance on $\mathcal{M}$, $V\_Ω(x,r)$ is the Riemannian volume of $B(x,r)\cap Ω$, where $B(x,r)$ is the geodesic ball of center $x$ and…
In this paper we study a variational Neumann problem for the higher order $s$-fractional Laplacian, with $s>1$. In the process, we introduce some non-local Neumann boundary conditions that appear in a natural way from a Gauss-like integration formula.
Consider the elliptic operator \[ A = - \sum_{k,l=1}^d \partial_k \, c_{kl} \, \partial_l + \sum_{k=1}^d a_k \, \partial_k - \sum_{k=1}^d \partial_k \, b_k + a_0 \] on a bounded connected open set $Ω\subset {\bf R}^d$ with Lipschitz boundary conditions, where $c_{kl} \in L_\infty(Ω,{\bf R})$ and $a_k,b_k,a_0 \in L_\infty(Ω,{\bf C})$, subject to Robin boundary conditions $\partial_νu + β\, {\rm Tr}\, u = 0$, where $β\in L_\infty(\partial Ω, {\bf C})$ is complex valued. Then we show that the kernel of the semigroup generated by $-A$ satisfies Gaussian estimates and Hölder Gaussian estimates. If …
We consider the semilinear wave equation $\Box_g u+a u^4=0$, $a\neq 0$, on a Lorentzian manifold $(M,g)$ with timelike boundary. We show that from the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map one can recover the metric $g$ and the coefficient $a$ up to natural obstructions. Our proof rests on the analysis of the interaction of distorted plane waves together with a scattering control argument, as well as Gaussian beam solutions.
We study the Neumann and Dirichlet problems for the total variation flow in metric measure spaces. We prove existence and uniqueness of weak solutions and study their asymptotic behaviour. Furthermore, in the Neumann problem we provide a notion of solutions which is valid for $L^1$ initial data, as well as prove their existence and uniqueness. Our main tools are the first-order linear differential structure due to Gigli and a version of the Gauss-Green formula.
We consider the following Liouville-type equation with exponential Neumann boundary condition: $$ -Δ\tilde u = \varepsilon^2 K(x) e^{2\tilde u}, \quad x\in D, \qquad \frac{\partial \tilde u}{\partial n} + 1 = \varepsilon κ(x) e^{\tilde u}, \quad x\in\partial D, $$ where $D\subset \mathbb R^2$ is the unit disc, $\varepsilon^2 K(x)$ and $\varepsilon κ(x)$ stand for the prescribed Gaussian curvature and the prescribed geodesic curvature of the boundary, respectively. We prove the existence of concentration solutions if $κ(x) + \sqrt{K(x)+κ(x)^2}$ ($x\in\partial D$) has a strictly local extremum p…
We consider compact smooth Riemmanian manifolds with boundary of dimension greater than or equal to two. For the initial-boundary value problem for the wave equation with a lower order term $q(t,x)$, we can recover the X-ray transform of time dependent potentials $q(t,x)$ from the dynamical Dirichlet-to-Neumann map in a stable way. We derive Hölder stability estimates for the X-ray transform of $q(t,x)$ which do not require measurements on the entirety of the boundary. The essential technique involved is the Gaussian beam Ansatz, and the proofs are done with the minimal assumptions on the geom…
Let $Ω$ be a smooth, convex, unbounded domain of $\R^N$. Denote by $μ_1(Ω)$ the first nontrivial Neumann eigenvalue of the Hermite operator in $Ω$; we prove that $μ_1(Ω) \ge 1$. The result is sharp since equality sign is achieved when $Ω$ is a $N$-dimensional strip. Our estimate can be equivalently viewed as an optimal Poincaré-Wirtinger inequality for functions belonging to the weighted Sobolev space $H^1(Ω,dγ_N)$, where $γ_N$ is the $N$-dimensional Gaussian measure.
We study the Neumann Green's function for second order parabolic systems in divergence form with time-dependent measurable coefficients in a cylindrical domain $\mathcal{Q}=Ω\times (-\infty,\infty)$, where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is an open connected set such that a multiplicative Sobolev embedding inequality holds there. Such a domain includes, for example, a bounded Sobolev extension domain, a special Lipschitz domain, and an unbounded domain with compact Lipschitz boundary. We construct the Neumann Green's function in $\mathcal{Q}$ under the assumption that weak solutions of the systems sat…
A Gaussian beam method is presented for the analysis of the energy of the high frequency solution to the mixed problem of the scalar wave equation in an open and convex subset, with initial conditions compactly supported in this set, and Dirichlet or Neumann type boundary condition. The transport of the microlocal energy density along the broken bicharacteristic flow at the high frequency limit is proved through the use of Wigner measures. Our approach consists first in computing explicitly the Wigner measures under an additional control of the initial data allowing to approach the solution by…
In this paper we consider the problem of prescribing the Gaussian and geodesic curvature on a disk and its boundary, respectively, via a conformal change of the metric. This leads us to a Liouville-type equation with a nonlinear Neumann boundary condition. We address the question of existence by setting the problem in a variational framework which seems to be completely new in the literature. We are able to find minimizers under symmetry assumptions.
Sharp Harmonic-Mean Bounds for Neumann Eigenvalues on Riemannian Surfaces and Counterexamples to Geodesic Ball Optimality on Higher-Dimensional Spheres
We consider an inverse boundary value problem for a semilinear wave equation on a time-dependent Lorentzian manifold with time-like boundary. The time-dependent coefficients of the nonlinear terms can be recovered in the interior from the knowledge of the Neumann-to-Dirichlet map. Either distorted plane waves or Gaussian beams can be used to derive uniqueness.
