We prove that Vopěnka's Principle implies that for every class $\mathfrak{X}$ of modules over any ring, the class of \textbf{$\boldsymbol{\mathfrak{X}}$-Gorenstein Projective modules} (\textbf{$\boldsymbol{\mathfrak{X}}$-$\boldsymbol{\mathcal{GP}}$}) is a special precovering class. In particular, it is not possible to prove (unless Vopěnka's Principle is inconsistent) that there is a ring over which the \textbf{Ding Projectives} ($\boldsymbol{\mathcal{DP}}$) or the \textbf{Gorenstein Projectives} ($\boldsymbol{\mathcal{GP}}$) do not form a precovering class (Šaroch previously obtained this result for the class $\mathcal{GP}$, using different methods). The key innovation is a new "top-down" characterization of \emph{deconstructibility}, which is a well-known sufficient condition for a class to be precovering. We also prove that Vopěnka's Principle implies, in some sense, the maximum possible amount of deconstructibility in module categories.
A full subcategory of a Grothendieck category is called deconstructible if it consists of all transfinite extensions of some set of objects. This concept provides a handy framework for structure theory and construction of approximations for subcategories of Grothendieck categories. It also allows to construct model structures and t-structures on categories of complexes over a Grothendieck category. In this paper we aim to establish fundamental results on deconstructible classes and outline how to apply these in the areas mentioned above. This is related to recent work of Gillespie, Enochs, Est…
We prove that some subquotient categories of one-sided triangulated categories are abelian. This unifies a result by Iyama-Yoshino in the case of triangulated categories and a result by Demonet-Liu in the case of exact categories.
A Jordan Hölder theorem is established for derived module categories of piecewise hereditary algebras. The resulting composition series of derived categories are shown to be independent of the choice of bounded or unbounded derived module categories, and also of the choice of finitely generated or arbitrary modules.
Let $H$ be a Hopf algebra. We consider $H$-equivariant modules over a Hopf module category $\mathcal C$ as modules over the smash extension $\mathcal C\# H$. We construct Grothendieck spectral sequences for the cohomologies as well as the $H$-locally finite cohomologies of these objects. We also introduce relative $(\mathcal D,H)$-Hopf modules over a Hopf comodule category $\mathcal D$. These generalize relative $(A,H)$-Hopf modules over an $H$-comodule algebra $A$. We construct Grothendieck spectral sequences for their cohomologies by using their rational $Hom$ objects and higher derived func…
Recollements of triangulated categories may be seen as exact sequences of such categories. Iterated recollements of triangulated categories are analogues of geometric or topological stratifications and of composition series of algebraic objects. We discuss the question of uniqueness of such a stratification, up to ordering and derived equivalence, for derived module categories. The main result is a positive answer in the form of a Jordan Hölder theorem for derived module categories of hereditary artin algebras. We also provide examples of derived simple rings.
We give a result of Auslander-Ringel-Tachikawa type for Gorenstein-projective modules over a complete Gorenstein order. In particular, we prove that a complete Gorenstein order is of finite Cohen-Macaulay representation type if and only if every indecomposable pure-injective object in the stable category of Gorenstein-projective modules is compact.
Auslander and Bridger introduced the notions of n-spherical modules and n-torsionfree modules. In this paper, we construct an equivalence between the stable category of n-spherical modules and the category of modules of grade at least n, and provide its Gorenstein analogue. As an application, we prove that if R is a Gorenstein local ring of Krull dimension d>0, then there exists a stable equivalence between the category of (d-1)-torsionfree R-modules and the category of d-spherical modules relative to the local cohomology functor.
In this paper, by using functor rings and functor categories, we study finiteness and purity of subcategories of the module categories. We give a characterisation of contravariantly finite resolving subcategories of the module category of finite representation type in terms of their functor rings. We also characterize contravariantly finite resolving subcategories of the module category $Λ${\rm -mod} that contain the Jacobson radical of $Λ$ of finite type, by their functor categories. We study the pure semisimplicity conjecture for a locally finitely presented category ${\underrightarrow{\lim}…
We establish a correspondence between recollements of abelian categories up to equivalence and certain TTF-triples. For a module category we show, moreover, a correspondence with idempotent ideals, recovering a theorem of Jans. Furthermore, we show that a recollement whose terms are module categories is equivalent to one induced by an idempotent element, thus answering a question by Kuhn.
A finite directed category is a $k$-linear category with finitely many objects and an underlying poset structure, where $k$ is an algebraically closed field. This concept unifies structures such as $k$-linerizations of posets and finite EI categories, quotient algebras of finite-dimensional hereditary algebras, triangular matrix algebras, etc. In this paper we study representations of finite directed categories, discuss their stratification properties, and show the existence of generalized APR tilting modules for triangular matrix algebras under some assumptions.
We prove that a certain eventually homological isomorphism between module categories induces a triangle equivalence between their singularity categories, Gorenstein defect categories and the stable categories of Gorenstein projective modules. Further, we show that Auslander-Reiten conjecture and Gorenstein symmetry conjecture can be reduced by eventually homological isomorphisms. Applying the results to arrow removal and vertex removal, we describe the Gorenstein projective modules over some non-monomial algebras, and we verify the Auslander-Reiten conjecture for certain algebras.
This work clarifies the relationship between the openness of the regular locus of a commutative Noetherian ring R and the existence of generators for the category of finitely generated R-modules, the corresponding bounded derived category, and for the singularity category of R.
This note describes an application of the theory of generalised Burnside rings to algebraic representation theory. Tables of marks are given explicitly for the groups $S_4$ and $S_5$ which are of particular interest in the context of reductive algebraic groups. As an application, the base sets for the nilpotent element $F_4 (a_3)$ are computed.
We study the homotopy category of unbounded complexes with bounded homologies and its quotient category by the homotopy category of bounded complexes. We show the existence of a recollement of the above quotient category and it has the homotopy category of acyclic complxes as a triangulated subcategory. In the case of the homotopy category of finitely generated projective modules over an Iwanaga-Gorenstein ring, we show that the above quotient category are triangle equivalent to the stable module category of Cohen-Macaulay $\opn{T}_2(R)$-modules.
Let R be a commutative noetherian ring. The notion of n-wide subcategories of Mod R is introduced and studied in Matsui-Nam-Takahashi-Tri-Yen in relation to the cohomological dimension of a specialization-closed subset of Spec R. In this paper, we introduce the notions of n-coherent subsets of Spec R and n-uniform subcategories of D(Mod R), and explore their interactions with n-wide subcategories of Mod R. We obtain a commutative diagram which yields filtrations of subcategories of Mod R, D(Mod R) and subsets of Spec R and complements classification theorems of subcategories due to Gabriel, Kr…
For any ring R we construct two triangulated categories, each admitting a functor from R-modules that sends projective and injective modules to 0. When R is a quasi-Frobenius or Gorenstein ring, these triangulated categories agree with each other and with the usual stable module category. Our stable module categories are homotopy categories of Quillen model structures on the category of R-modules. These model categories involve generalizations of Gorenstein projective and injective modules that we derive by replacing finitely presented modules by modules of type FP-infinity. Along the way, we …
Let $T$ be an infinitely generated tilting module of projective dimension at most one over an arbitrary associative ring $A$, and let $B$ be the endomorphism ring of $T$. In this paper, we prove that if $T$ is good then there exists a ring $C$, a homological ring epimorphism $B\ra C$ and a recollement among the (unbounded) derived module categories $\D{C}$ of $C$, $\D{B}$ of $B$, and $\D{A}$ of $A$. In particular, the kernel of the total left derived functor $T\otimes_B^{\mathbb L}-$ is triangle equivalent to the derived module category $\D{C}$. Conversely, if the functor $T\otimes_B^{\mathbb …
Tilting objects play a key role in the study of triangulated categories. A famous result due to Iyama and Takahashi asserts that the stable categories of graded maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over quotient singularities have tilting objects. This paper proves a noncommutative generalization of Iyama and Takahashi's theorem using noncommutative algebraic geometry. Namely, if $S$ is a noetherian AS-regular Koszul algebra and $G$ is a finite group acting on $S$ such that $S^G$ is a "Gorenstein isolated singularity", then the stable category ${\underline {\operatorname {CM}}}^{\Bbb Z}(S^G)$ of gra…
Let $X$ be a variety with an action by an algebraic group $G$. In this paper we discuss various properties of $G$-equivariant $D$-modules on $X$, such as the decompositions of their global sections as representations of $G$ (when $G$ is reductive), and descriptions of the categories that they form. When $G$ acts on $X$ with finitely many orbits, the category of equivariant $D$-modules is isomorphic to the category of finite-dimensional representations of a finite quiver with relations. We describe explicitly these categories for irreducible $G$-modules $X$ that are spherical varieties, and sho…
In this paper, we use basic formal variable techniques to study certain categories of modules for the toroidal Lie algebra $τ$. More specifically, we define and study two categories $\mathcal{E}_τ$ and $\mathcal{C}_τ$ of $τ$-modules using generating functions, where $\mathcal{E}_τ$ is proved to contain the evaluation modules while $\mathcal{C}_τ$ contains certain restricted $τ$-modules, the evaluation modules, and their tensor product modules. Furthermore, we classify the irreducible integrable modules in categories $\mathcal{E}_τ$ and $\mathcal{C}_τ$.
We study IE-closed subcategories of a module category, subcategories which are closed under taking Images and Extensions. We investigate the relation between IE-closed subcategories and torsion pairs, and characterize $τ$-tilting finite algebras using IE-closed subcategories. For the hereditary case, we show that IE-closed subcategories can be classified by twin rigid modules, pairs of rigid modules satisfying some homological conditions. Moreover, we introduce mutation of twin rigid modules analogously to tilting modules, which gives a way to calculate all twin rigid modules for the represent…
We classify all triangulated orbit categories of path-algebras of Dynkin diagrams that are triangle equivalent to a stable module category of a representation-finite self-injective standard algebra. For each triangulated orbit category T we give an explicit description of a representation-finite self-injective standard algebra with stable module category triangle equivalent to T.
Let $k$ be a commutative $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra. We study families of functors between categories of finitely generated $R$-modules which are defined for all commutative $k$-algebras $R$ simultaneously and are compatible with base changes. These operations turn out to be Schur functors associated to $k$-linear representations of symmetric groups. This result is closely related to Macdonald's classification of polynomial functors.
It is a result of Gabriel that hereditary torsion pairs in categories of modules are in bijection with certain filters of ideals of the base ring, called Gabriel filters or Gabriel topologies. A result of Jans shows that this bijection restricts to a correspondence between (Gabriel filters that are uniquely determined by) idempotent ideals and TTF triples. Over the years, these classical results have been extended in several different directions. In this paper we present a detailed and self-contained exposition of an extension of the above bijective correspondences to additive functor categori…
In this article, we generalize the concept of torsion pairs and study its structure. As a trial of obtaining all torsion pairs, we decompose torsion pairs by projective modules and injective modules. Then we calculate torsion pairs on the algebra KAn and tub categories. At last we try to find all torsion pairs on the module categories of finite dimensional hereditary algebras.
We describe the structure of module categories of finite dimensional algebras over an algebraically closed field for which the cycles of nonzero nonisomorphisms between indecomposable finite dimensional modules are finite (do not belong to the infinite Jacobson radical of the module category). Moreover, geometric and homological properties of these module categories are exhibited.
We prove that the categories of Gelfand-Zeitlin modules of $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{gl}_n$ and Whittaker modules associated with a semi-simple complex finite-dimensional algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ are extension full in the category of all $\mathfrak{g}$-modules. This is used to estimate and in some cases determine the global dimension of blocks of the categories of Gelfand-Zeitlin and Whittaker modules.
We show that the stable module categories of certain selfinjective algebras of finite representation type having tree class A_n, D_n, E_6, E_7 or E_8 are triangulated equivalent to u-cluster categories of the corresponding Dynkin type. The proof relies on the 'Morita' theorem for u-cluster categories by Keller and Reiten, along with the recent computation of Calabi-Yau dimensions of stable module categories by Dugas.
The effectiveness of the aplication of constructions in $G$-graded $k$-categories to the computation of the fundamental group of a finite dimensional $k$-algebra, alongside with open problems still left untouched by those methods and new problems arisen from the introduction of the concept of fundamental group of a $k$-linear category, motivated the investigation of $H$-module categories, i.e., actions of a Hopf algebra $H$ on a $k$-linear category. The $G$-graded case corresponds then to actions of the Hopf algebra $k^G$ on a $k$-linear category. In this work we take a step further and introd…
By Auslander's algebraic McKay correspondence, the stable category of Cohen-Macaulay modules over a simple singularity is equivalent to the $1$-cluster category of the path algebra of a Dynkin quiver (i.e. the orbit category of the derived category by the action of the Auslander-Reiten translation). In this paper we give a systematic method to construct a similar type of triangle equivalence between the stable category of Cohen-Macaulay modules over a Gorenstein isolated singularity $R$ and the generalized (higher) cluster category of a finite dimensional algebra $Λ$. The key role is played by…
Following analogous constructions for Lie algebras, we define Whittaker modules and Whittaker categories for finite-dimensional simple Lie superalgebras. Results include a decomposition of Whittaker categories for a Lie superalgebra according to the action of an appropriate sub-superalgebra; and, for basic classical Lie superalgebras of type I, a description of the strongly typical simple Whittaker modules.
Let $A$ be a finite dimensional algebra and $D^b(A)$ be the bounded derived category of finitely generated left $A$-modules. In this paper we consider lengths of compact exceptional objects in $D^b(A)$, proving a sufficient condition such that these lengths are bounded by the number of isomorphism classes of simple $A$-modules. Moreover, we show that algebras satisfying this condition is bounded derived simple.
The category of modules over the endomorphism algebra of a rigid object in a Hom-finite triangulated category C has been given two different descriptions: On the one hand, as shown by Osamu Iyama and Yuji Yoshino, it is equivalent to an ideal quotient of a subcategory of C. On the other hand, Aslak Buan and Robert Marsh proved that this module category is also equivalent to some localisation of C. In this paper, we give a conceptual interpretation, inspired from homotopical algebra, of this double description. Our main aim, yet to be acheived, is to generalise Buan-Marsh's result to the case o…
Let $H$ be a finite dimensional hereditary algebra over an algebraically closed field, and let $\mathcal{C}_{H}$ be the corresponding cluster category. We give a description of the (standard) fundamental domain of $\mathcal{C}_{H} $ in the bounded derived category $\mathcal{D}^{b}(H)$, and of the cluster-tilting objects, in terms of the category $\modΓ$\ of finitely generated modules over a suitable tilted algebra $% Γ.$ Furthermore, we apply this description to obtain (the quiver of) an arbitrary cluster-tilted algebra.
Simple-minded systems in stable module categories are defined by orthogonality and generating properties so that the images of the simple modules under a stable equivalence form such a system. Simple-minded systems are shown to be invariant under stable equivalences; thus the set of all simple-minded systems is an invariant of a stable module category. The simple-minded systems of several classes of algebras are described and connections to the Auslander-Reiten conjecture are pointed out.
We prove that some subquotient categories of exact categories are abelian. This generalizes a result by Koenig-Zhu in the case of (algebraic) triangulated categories. As a particular case, if an exact category B with enough projectives and injectives has a cluster tilting subcategory M, then B/M is abelian. More precisely, it is equivalent to the category of finitely presented modules over the stable category of M.
This survey article is intended as an introduction to the recent categorical classification theorems of the three authors, restricting to the special case of the category of modules for a finite group.
We show that the category of finite-dimensional modules over the endomorphism algebra of a rigid object in a Hom-finite triangulated category is equivalent to the Gabriel-Zisman localisation of the category with respect to a certain class of maps. This generalises the 2-Calabi-Yau tilting theorem of Keller-Reiten, in which the module category is obtained as a factor category, to the rigid case.
We study the homotopy category $ K(\Inj A)$ of all injective modules over a finite dimensional algebra $A$ with discrete derived category. We give a classification of the indecomposable objects of $ K(\Inj A)$ for any radical square zero self-injective algebra $A$. In particular, every indecomposable object is endofinite.
We develop the theory dg algebras with enough idempotents and their dg modules and show their equivalence with that of small dg categories and their dg modules. We introduce the concept of dg adjunction and show that the classical covariant tensor-Hom and contravariant Hom-Hom adjunctions of modules over associative unital algebras are extended as dg adjunctions between categories of dg bimodules. The corresponding adjunctions of the associated triangulated functors are studied, and we investigate when they are one-sided parts of bifunctors which are triangulated on both variables. We finally …
This paper builds on earlier work, where the authors described Whittaker modules for the Virasoro algebra. Using a framework of Batra and Mazorchuk, the current paper investigates a category of Virasoro algebra modules that includes Whittaker modules. Results in this paper include a classification of the simple modules in the category and a description of certain induced modules that are a natural generalization of simple Whittaker modules.
We study distances on zigzag persistence modules from the viewpoint of derived categories and Auslander--Reiten quivers. The derived category of ordinary persistence modules is derived equivalent to that of arbitrary zigzag persistence modules, depending on a classical tilting module. Through this derived equivalence, we define and compute distances on the derived category of arbitrary zigzag persistence modules and prove an algebraic stability theorem. We also compare our distance with the distance for purely zigzag persistence modules introduced by Botnan--Lesnick and the sheaf-theoretic con…
