The standard lattice Boltzmann equation (LBE) method usually fails to capture the physical equilibrium state of a two-phase fluid system, i.e., zero velocity and constant chemical potential. Consequently, spurious velocities and inconsistent thermodynamic density properties are frequently encountered in LBE simulations. In this work, based on a rigorous analysis of the discrete balance equation of LBE, we identify the structure of the force imbalance due to discretization errors from different parts. Then a well-balanced LBE is proposed which can achieve the discrete equilibrium state. The well-balanced properties of the LBE are confirmed by some numerical tests of a flat interface problem and a droplet system.
In this paper, we theoretically prove a set of fundamental conditions pertaining discrete velocity sets and corresponding weights. These conditions provide sufficient conditions for a priori formulation of lattice Boltzmann models that automatically admit correct hydrodynamic moments up to any given N-th order.
The particles model, the collision model, the polynomial development used for the equilibrium distribution, the time discretization and the velocity discretization are factors that let the lattice Boltzmann framework (LBM) far away from its conceptual support: the continuous Boltzmann equation (BE). Most collision models are based on the BGK, single parameter, relaxation-term leading to constant Prandtl numbers. The polynomial expansion used for the equilibrium distribution introduces an upper-bound in the local macroscopic speed. Most widely used time discretization procedures give an explici…
The Lattice Boltzmann method has been gaining acceptance for hydrodynamic problems involving complex boundaries, non-equilibrium dynamics and interfacial phenomena in multiphase or multicomponent systems. lb2d.pm is a Perl module offering a clear framework for simple Lattice Boltzmann simulations in 2D. The syntax and some basic applications are presented. Mainly, the new version 0.1 enables solute transport and accounts for reactive boundaries leading to surface growth.
Conventional lattice Boltzmann models only satisfy moment isotropy up to fourth order. In order to accurately describe improtant physical effects beyond the isothermal Navier-Stokes fluid regime, higher order isotropy is required. In this paper, we present some basic results on moment isotropy and its relationship to the rotational symmetry of a generating discrete vector set. The anslysis provides a geometric understanding for popular lattice Boltzmann models, while offering a systematic procedure to construct higher order models.
A novel Lattice Boltzmann method is derived using the Principle of Minimum Cross Entropy (MinxEnt) via the minimization of Kullback-Leibler Divergence (KLD). By carrying out the actual single step Newton-Raphson minimization (MinxEnt-LBM) a more accurate and stable Lattice Boltzmann Method can be implemented. To demonstrate this, 1D shock tube and 2D lid-driven cavity flow simulations are carried out and compared to Single Relaxation Time LBM, Two Relaxation Time LBM, Multiple Relaxation Time LBM and Eherenfest Step LBM.
We present a novel lattice Boltzmann method that has a capability of simulating thermodynamic multiphase flows. This approach is fully thermodynamically consistent at the macroscopic level. Using this new method, a liquid-vapor boiling process, including liquid-vapor formation and coalescence together with a full coupling of temperature, is simulated for the first time.
A new lattice Boltzmann scheme associated with flexible specific heat ratio is proposed. The new free degree is introduced via the internal energy associated with the internal structure. The evolution equation of the distribution function is reduced to two evolution equations. One is connected to the density and velocity, the other is of the energy. A two-dimensional lattice Boltzmann model and a three-dimensional lattice Boltzmann model are derived via the Hermite expansion. The two lattice Boltzmann models are applied to simulating the shock tube of one dimension. Good agreement between the …
We present an axisymmetric lattice Boltzmann model based on the Kupershtokh et al. multiphase model that is capable of solving liquid-gas density ratios up to $10^3$. Appropriate source terms are added to the lattice Boltzmann evolution equation to fully recover the axisymmetric multiphase conservation equations. We validate the model by showing that a stationary droplet obeys the Young-Laplace law, comparing the second oscillation mode of a droplet with respect to an analytical solution and showing correct mass conservation of a propagating density wave.
The recently introduced consistent lattice Boltzmann model with energy conservation [S. Ansumali, I.V. Karlin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 260605 (2005)] is extended to the simulation of thermal flows on standard lattices. The two-dimensional thermal model on the standard square lattice with nine velocities is developed and validated in the thermal Couette and Rayleigh-Bénard natural convection problems.
Is it possible to solve Boltzmann-type kinetic equations using only a small number of particles velocities? We introduce a novel techniques of solving kinetic equations with (arbitrarily) large number of particle velocities using only a lattice Boltzmann method on standard, low-symmetry lattices. The renormalized kinetic equation is validated with the exact solution of the planar Couette flow at moderate Knudsen numbers.
The influence of the use of the generalized Hermite polynomial on the Hermite-based lattice Boltzmann (LB) construction approach, lattice sets, the thermal weights, moments and the equilibrium distribution function (EDF) are addressed. A new moment system is proposed. The theoretical possibility to obtain a high-order Hermite-based LB model capable to exactly match some first hydrodynamic moments thermally 1) on-Cartesian lattice, 2) with thermal weights in the EDF, 3) whilst the highest possible hydrodynamic moments that are exactly matched are obtained with the shortest on-Cartesian lattice …
We present an a priori derivation of the force scheme for lattice Boltzmann method based on kinetic theoretical formulation. We show that the discrete lattice effect, previously eliminated a posteriori in BGK collision model, is due to first-order space-time discretization and can be eliminated generically for a wide range of collision models with second-order space-time discretization. Particularly, the force scheme for the recently developed spectral multiple-relaxation-time (SMRT) collision model is obtained and numerically verified.
A new lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is introduced, based on a regularization of the pre-collision distribution functions in terms of the local density, velocity, and momentum flux tensor. The model dramatically improves the precision and numerical stability for the simulation of fluid flows by LB methods. This claim is supported by simulation results of some 2D and 3D flows.
A new lattice Boltzmann model for multicomponent ideal gas mixtures is presented. The model development consists of two parts. First, a new kinetic model for Stefan- Maxwell diffusion amongst the species is proposed and realized as a lattice Boltzmann equation on the standard discrete velocity set. Second, a compressible lattice Boltzmann model for the momentum and energy of the mixture is established. Both parts are consistently coupled through mixture composition, momentum, pressure, energy and enthalpy whereby a passive scalar advection-diffusion coupling is obviated, unlike in previous app…
We show that, when a single relaxation time lattice Boltzmann algorithm is used to solve the hydrodynamic equations of a binary fluid for which the two components have different viscosities, strong spurious velocities in the steady state lead to incorrect results for the equilibrium contact angle. We identify the origins of these spurious currents, and demonstrate how the results can be greatly improved by using a lattice Boltzmann method based on a multiple-relaxation-time algorithm. By considering capillary filling we describe the dependence of the advancing contact angle on the interface ve…
Off-lattice Boltzmann methods increase the flexibility and applicability of lattice Boltzmann methods by decoupling the discretizations of time, space, and particle velocities. However, the velocity sets that are mostly used in off-lattice Boltzmann simulations were originally tailored to on-lattice Boltzmann methods. In this contribution, we show how the accuracy and efficiency of weakly and fully compressible semi-Lagrangian off-lattice Boltzmann simulations is increased by velocity sets derived from cubature rules, i.e. multivariate quadratures, which have not been produced by the Gauss-pro…
We present a regularized version of the color gradient lattice Boltzmann (LB) scheme for the simulation of droplet formation in microfluidic devices of experimental relevance. The regularized version is shown to provide computationally efficient access to Capillary number regimes relevant to droplet generation via microfluidic devices, such as flow-focusers and the more recent microfluidic step emulsifier devices.
We investigate the effects of geometrical micro-irregularities on the conversion efficiency of reactive flows in narrow channels of millimetric size. Three-dimensional simulations, based upon a Lattice-Boltzmann-Lax-Wendroff code, indicate that periodic micro-barriers may have an appreciable effect on the effective reaction efficiency of the device. Once extrapolated to macroscopic scales, these effects can result in a sizeable increase of the overall reaction efficiency.
Electroconvective flow between two infinitely long parallel electrodes is investigated via a multiphysics computational model. The model solves for spatiotemporal flow properties using two-relaxation-time Lattice Boltzmann Method for fluid and charge transport coupled to Fast Fourier Transport Poisson solver for the electric potential. The segregated model agrees with the previous analytical and numerical results providing a robust approach for modeling electrohydrodynamic flows.
We present a new method in order to get variable slip coefficient in binary lattice Boltzmann models to simulate gaseous flows. Boundary layer theory is presented. We study both the single- and multi-fluid BGK-type models as well. The boundary slip and the Knudsen layer are analyzed in detail. Benchmark simulations are carried out in order to compare the analytical derivation with the numerical results. Excellent agreement is found between the two situations.
In this paper, computations of transient, incompressible, turbulent, plane jets using the discrete lattice BGK Boltzmann equation are reported. A priori derivation of the discrete lattice BGK Boltzmann equation with a spatially and temporally dependent relaxation time parameter, which is used to represent the averaged flow field, from its corresponding continuous form is given. The averaged behavior of the turbulence field is represented by the standard {\it k-$ε$} turbulence model and computed using a finite-volume scheme on non-uniform grids. Computed results are compared with analytical sol…
The discretized equilibrium distributions of the lattice Boltzmann method are presented by using the coefficients of the Lagrange interpolating polynomials that pass through the points related to discrete velocities and using moments of the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. The ranges of flow velocity and temperature providing positive valued distributions vary with regulating discrete velocities as parameters. New isothermal and thermal compressible models are proposed for flows of the level of the isothermal and thermal compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Thermal compressible shock tube flow…
A numerical method, based on the discrete lattice Boltzmann equation, is presented for solving the volume-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. With a modified equilibrium distribution and an additional forcing term, the volume-averaged Navier-Stokes equations can be recovered from the lattice Boltzmann equation in the limit of small Mach number by the Chapman-Enskog analysis and Taylor expansion. Due to its advantages such as explicit solver and inherent parallelism, the method appears to be more competitive with traditional numerical techniques. Numerical simulations show that the proposed model…
It is well-known that the original lattice Boltzmann (LB) equation deviates from the Navier-Stokes equations due to an unphysical velocity dependent viscosity. This unphysical dependency violates the Galilean invariance and limits the validation domain of the LB method to near incompressible flows. As previously shown, recovery of correct transport phenomena in kinetic equations depends on the higher hydrodynamic moments. In this Letter, we give specific criteria for recovery of various transport coefficients. The Galilean invariance of a general class of LB models is demonstrated via numerica…
A lattice Boltzmann method is proposed based on the expansion of the equilibrium distribution function in powers of a new set of generalized orthonormal polynomials which are here presented. The new polynomials are orthonormal under the weight defined by the equilibrium distribution function itself. The D-dimensional Hermite polynomials is a sub-case of the present ones, associated to the particular weight of a gaussian function. The proposed lattice Boltzmann method allows for the treatment of semi-classical fluids, such as electrons in metals under the Drude-Sommerfeld model, which is a part…
We present a set of polynomial equations that provides models of the lattice Boltzmann theory for any required level of accuracy and for any dimensional space in a general form. We explicitly derive two- and three-dimensional models applicable to describe thermal compressible flows of the level of the Navier-Stokes equations.
The role of geometrical micro-barriers on the conversion efficiency of reactive flows in narrow three-dimensional channels of millimetric size is investigated. Using a Lattice-Boltzmann-Lax-Wendroff code, we show that micro-barriers have an appreciable effect on the effective reaction efficiency of the device. If extrapolated to macroscopic scales, these effects can result in a sizeable increase of the overall reaction efficiency.
In this paper, we demonstrate a set of fundamental conditions required for the formulation of a thermohydrodynamic lattice Boltzmann model at an arbitrary Prandtl number. A specific collision operator form is then proposed that is in compliance with these conditions. It admits two independent relaxation times, one for viscosity and another for thermal conductivity. But more importantly, the resulting thermohydrodynamic equations based on such a collision operator form is theoretically shown to remove the well known non-Galilean invariant artifact at non-unity Prandtl numbers in previous therma…
We present an energy conserving lattice Boltzmann model based on a crystallographic lattice for simulation of weakly compressible flows. The theoretical requirements and the methodology to construct such a model are discussed. We demonstrate that the model recovers the isentropic sound speed in addition to the effects of viscous heating and heat flux dynamics. Several test cases for acoustics, thermal and thermoacoustic flows are simulated to show the accuracy of the proposed model.
In this study, a phase-field lattice Boltzmann model based on the Allen-Cahn equation with a filtered collision operator and high-order corrections in the equilibrium distribution functions is presented. Here we show that in addition to producing numerical results consistent with prior numerical methods, analytic solutions, and experiments with the density ratio of 1000, previous numerical deficiencies are resolved. Specifically, the new model is characterized by robustness at low viscosity, accurate prediction of shear stress at interfaces, and removal of artificial dense bubbles and rarefied…
In this paper, we propose a hybrid lattice Boltzmann method (HLBM) for solving fluid-structure interaction problems. The proposed numerical approach is applied to model the flow induced by a vibrating thin lamina submerged in a viscous quiescent fluid. The hydrodynamic force exerted by the fluid on the solid body is described by means of a complex hydrodynamic function, whose real and imaginary parts are determined via parametric analysis. Numerical results are validated by comparison with those from other numerical as well as experimental works available in the literature. The proposed hybrid…
We analyze the Lattice Boltzmann method for the simulation of fluctuating hydrodynamics by Adhikari et al. [Europhys. Lett. 71, 473 (2005)] and find that it shows excellent agreement with theory even for small wavelengths as long as a stationary system is considered. This is in contrast to other finite difference and older lattice Boltzmann implementations that show convergence only in the limit of large wavelengths. In particular cross correlators vanish to less than 0.5%. For larger mean velocities, however, Galilean invariance violations manifest themselves through errors of a magnitude sim…
We present a diffusion dominated evaporation model using the popular pseudopotential multicomponent lattice Boltzmann method introduced by Shan and Chen. With an analytical computation of the diffusion coefficients, we demonstrate that Fick's law is obeyed. We then validate the applicability of our model by demonstrating the agreement of the time evolution of the interface position of an evaporating planar film to the analytical prediction. Furthermore, we study the evaporation of a freely floating droplet and confirm that the effect of Laplace pressure is significant for predicting the time e…
We explore the Carlemann linearization of the collision term of the lattice Boltzmann formulation, as a first step towards formulating a quantum lattice Boltzmann algorithm. Specifically, we deal with the case of a single, incompressible fluid with the Bhatnagar Gross and Krook equilibrium function. Under this assumption, the error in the velocities is proportional to the square of the Mach number. Then, we showcase the Carlemann linearization technique for the system under study. We compute an upper bound to the number of variables as a function of the order of the Carlemann linearization. We…
A fluctuating non-ideal fluid at its critical point is simulated with the Lattice Boltzmann method. It is demonstrated that the method, employing a Ginzburg-Landau free energy functional, correctly reproduces the static critical behavior associated with the Ising universality class. A finite-size scaling analysis is applied to determine the critical exponents related to the order parameter, compressibility and specific heat. A particular focus is put on finite-size effects and issues related to the global conservation of the order-parameter.
The lattice Boltzmann method has become a standard technique for simulating a wide range of fluid flows. However, the intrinsic coupling of momentum and space discretization restricts the traditional lattice Boltzmann method to regular lattices. Alternative off-lattice Boltzmann schemes exist for both single- and multiphase flows that decouple the velocity discretization from the underlying spatial grid. The current study extends the applicability of these off-lattice methods by introducing a finite element formulation that enables simulating contact line dynamics for partially wetting fluids.…
The implementation of the kinetic diffuse boundary condition with the characteristic streaming-collision mechanism is studied for the high-order lattice Boltzmann (LB) models. The obtained formulation is also tested and validated numerically for three high-order LB models for both isothermal and thermal Couette flows. The streaming-collision mechanism ensures that high-order LB models can retain particle feature while go beyond the Navier-Stokes hydrodynamics.
We propose a novel multi-domain grid refinement technique with extensions to entropic incompressible, thermal and compressible lattice Boltzmann models. Its validity and accuracy are accessed by comparison to available direct numerical simulation and experiment for the simulation of isothermal, thermal and viscous supersonic flow. In particular, we investigate the advantages of grid refinement for the set-ups of turbulent channel flow, flow past a sphere, Rayleigh-Benard convection as well as the supersonic flow around an airfoil. Special attention is payed to analyzing the adaptive features o…
We present a pedagogical introduction to a quantum computing algorithm for the simulation of classical fluids, based on the Carleman linearization of a second-quantized version of lattice kinetic theory. Prospects and limitations for the case of fluid turbulence are discussed and commented on.
A novel Lattice Boltzmann Method applicable to compressible fluid flows is developed. This method is based on replacing the governing equations by a relaxation system and the interpretation of the diagonal form of the relaxation system as a discrete velocity Boltzmann system. As a result of this interpretation, the local equilibrium distribution functions are simple algebraic functions of the conserved variables and the fluxes, without the low Mach number expansion present in the equilibrium distribution of the traditional Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM). This new Lattice Boltzmann Relaxation S…
A non-perturbative analysis of the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) model kinetic equation for finite values of the Knudsen number is presented. This analysis indicates why discrete kinetic versions of the BGK equation, and notably the Lattice Boltzmann method, can provide semi-quantitative results also in the non-hydrodynamic, finite-Knudsen regime, up to $Kn\sim {\cal O}(1)$. This may help the interpretation of recent Lattice Boltzmann simulations of microflows, which show satisfactory agreement with continuum kinetic theory in the moderate-Knudsen regime.
The dynamics of the cavitation bubble collapse is a fundamental issue for the bubble collapse application and prevention. In present work, the modified forcing scheme for the pseudopotential multi-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model developed by Li Q. et al. is adopted to develop a cavitation bubble collapse model. In the respects of coexistence curves and Laplace law verification, the improved pseudopotential multi-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model is investigated. The independence between the kinematic viscosity and the thermodynamic consistency, surface tension is founded. By homo…
Numerical simulation results of basic exactly solvable fluid flows using the previously proposed Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) formulated on a general curvilinear coordinate system are presented. As was noted in the theoretical work of H. Chen, such curvilinear Lattice Boltzmann Method preserves a fundamental one-to-one exact advection feature in producing minimal numerical diffusion, as the Cartesian lattice Boltzmann model. As we numerically show, the new model converges to exact solutions of basic fluid flows with the increase of grid resolution in the presence of both natural curvilinear …
In this contribution we review recent efforts on investigations of the effect of (apparent) boundary slip by utilizing lattice Boltzmann simulations. We demonstrate the applicability of the method to treat fundamental questions in microfluidics by investigating fluid flow in hydrophobic and rough microchannels as well as over surfaces covered by nano- or microscale gas bubbles.
Saturated vapor condensation on the homogeneous and heterogeneous sub-cooled wall under gravity was numerically simulated by the improved pseudo-potential phase-change multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann (LB) method. Firstly, the phase-change LB method coupling finite different method to solve the energy equation was verified by the D-2 law of the droplets evaporation, which improve the model could precisely realize the numerical simulation of phase change.
The development of multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is a significant contribution in improving the numerical behavior, revealing the math and physics mechanism and extending the application of LBM. However, some of the MRT schemes proposed previously are not physically-consistent. In this work, we take D2Q9 as a example to show how to derive physically-consistent MRT-LBM schemes by eigenvalue decomposition of the collision operator. In addition, the scheme is validated by the equivalence to Navier-Stokes equations and numerical simulations.
A modified lattice Boltzmann model with a stochastic relaxation mechanism mimicking "virtual'' collisions between free-streaming particles and solid walls is introduced. This modified scheme permits to compute plane channel flows in satisfactory agreement with analytical results over a broad spectrum of Knudsen numbers, ranging from the hydrodynamic regime, all the way to quasi-free flow regimes up to Kn 30.
We propose a two-population lattice Boltzmann model on standard lattices for the simulation of compressible flows. The model is fully on-lattice and uses the single relaxation time Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook kinetic equations along with appropriate correction terms to recover the Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations. The accuracy and performance of the model are analyzed through simulations of compressible benchmark cases including Sod shock tube, sound generation in shock-vortex interaction and compressible decaying turbulence in a box with eddy shocklets. It is demonstrated that the present model prov…
Galilean invariance is a fundamental property; however, although the lattice Boltzmann equation itself is Galilean invariant, this property is usually not taken into account in the treatment of the fluid-solid interface. Here, we show that consideration of Galilean invariance in fluid-solid interfacial dynamics can greatly enhance the computational accuracy and robustness in a numerical simulation. Surprisingly, simulations are so vastly improved that the force fluctuation is very small and a time average becomes unnecessary.
