A new lattice Boltzmann model for multicomponent ideal gas mixtures is presented. The model development consists of two parts. First, a new kinetic model for Stefan- Maxwell diffusion amongst the species is proposed and realized as a lattice Boltzmann equation on the standard discrete velocity set. Second, a compressible lattice Boltzmann model for the momentum and energy of the mixture is established. Both parts are consistently coupled through mixture composition, momentum, pressure, energy and enthalpy whereby a passive scalar advection-diffusion coupling is obviated, unlike in previous approaches. The proposed model is realized on the standard three-dimensional lattices and is validated with a set of benchmarks highlighting various physical aspects of compressible mixtures. Stefan-Maxwell diffusion is tested against experiment and theory of uphill diffusion of argon and methane in a ternary mixture with hydrogen. The speed of sound is measured in various binary and ternary compositions. We further validate the Stefan-Maxwell diffusion coupling with hydrodynamics by simulating diffusion in opposed jets and the three-dimensional Kelvin-Helmholtz instability of shear layers in a two-component mixture. Apart from the multicomponent compressible mixture, the proposed lattice Boltzmann model also provides an extension of the lattice Boltzmann equation to the compressible flow regime on the standard three-dimensional lattice.
We present a diffusion dominated evaporation model using the popular pseudopotential multicomponent lattice Boltzmann method introduced by Shan and Chen. With an analytical computation of the diffusion coefficients, we demonstrate that Fick's law is obeyed. We then validate the applicability of our model by demonstrating the agreement of the time evolution of the interface position of an evaporating planar film to the analytical prediction. Furthermore, we study the evaporation of a freely floating droplet and confirm that the effect of Laplace pressure is significant for predicting the time e…
We present a regularized version of the color gradient lattice Boltzmann (LB) scheme for the simulation of droplet formation in microfluidic devices of experimental relevance. The regularized version is shown to provide computationally efficient access to Capillary number regimes relevant to droplet generation via microfluidic devices, such as flow-focusers and the more recent microfluidic step emulsifier devices.
Lattice Boltzmann Models (LBM) and Phase Field Models (PFM) are two of the most widespread approaches for the numerical study of multicomponent fluid systems. Both methods have been successfully employed by several authors but, despite their popularity, still remains unclear how to properly compare them and how they perform on the same problem. Here we present a unified framework for the direct (one-to-one) comparison of the multicomponent LBM against the PFM. We provide analytical guidelines on how to compare the Shan-Chen (SC) lattice Boltzmann model for non-ideal multicomponent fluids with …
We introduce a mesoscale approach for the simulation of multicomponent flows to model the direct-writing printing process, along with the early stage of ink deposition. As an application scenario, alginate solutions at different concentrations are numerically investigated alongside processing parameters, such as apparent viscosity, extrusion rate, and print head velocity. The present approach offers useful insights on the ink rheological effects upon printed products, susceptible to geometric accuracy and shear stress, by manufacturing processes such as the direct-writing printing for complex …
A multiple-relaxation-time discrete Boltzmann model (DBM) is proposed for multicomponent mixtures, where compressible, hydrodynamic, and thermodynamic nonequilibrium effects are taken into account. It allows the specific heat ratio and the Prandtl number to be adjustable, and is suitable for both low and high speed fluid flows. From the physical side, besides being consistent with the multicomponent Navier-Stokes equations, Fick's law and Stefan-Maxwell diffusion equation in the hydrodynamic limit, the DBM provides more kinetic information about the nonequilibrium effects. The physical capabil…
The implementation of boundary conditions is among the most challenging parts of modeling fluid flow through channels and complex media. Here, we show that the existing methods to deal with liquid-wall interactions using multicomponent Lattice Boltzmann are accurate when the wall is aligned with the main axes of the lattice but fail otherwise. To solve this problem, we extend a strategy previously developed for multiphase models. As an example, we study the coalescence of two droplets on a curved surface in two dimensions. The strategy proposed here is of special relevance for binary flows in …
Droplets on hydrophobic surfaces are ubiquitous in microfluidic applications and there exists a number of commonly used multicomponent and multiphase lattice Boltzmann schemes to study such systems. In this paper we focus on a popular implementation of a multicomponent model as introduced by Shan and Chen. Here, interactions between different components are implemented as repulsive forces whose strength is determined by model parameters. In this paper we present simulations of a droplet on a hydrophobic surface. We investigate the dependence of the contact angle on the simulation parameters an…
The free energy model can extend the Lattice Boltzmann method to multiphase systems. However, there is a lack of models capable of simulating multicomponent multiphase fluids with partial miscibility. In addition, existing models cannot be generalized to honor thermodynamic information provided by any multicomponent equation of state of choice. In this paper, we introduce a free energy Lattice Boltzmann model where the forcing term is determined by the fugacity of the species, the thermodynamic property that connects species partial pressure to chemical potential calculations. By doing so, we …
In the article correct method for the kinetic Boltzmann equation asymptotic solution is formulated, the Hilbert's and Enskog's methods are discussed. The equations system of multicomponent non-equilibrium gas dynamics is derived, that corresponds to the first order in the approximate (asymptotic) method for solution of the system of kinetic Boltzmann equations. It is shown, that the velocity distribution functions of particles, obtained by the proposed method and by Enskog's method, within Enskog's approach, are equivalent up to the infinitesimal first order terms of the asymptotic expansion, …
We study the diffusivity of a small particle immersed in a square box filled with a non-ideal multicomponent fluid in the presence of thermal fluctuations. Our approach is based on the numerical integration of fluctuating lattice Boltzmann models (LBM) for multicomponent mixtures. At changing the wettability on the particle's surface, we measure the mean square displacement (MSD) and compare with the prediction of the Stokes-Einstein theory. Two main set-ups are tested, involving periodic boundary conditions and wall boundary conditions realized on the computational box. We find that full peri…
We propose numerical simulations of viscoelastic fluids based on a hybrid algorithm combining Lattice-Boltzmann models (LBM) and Finite Differences (FD) schemes, the former used to model the macroscopic hydrodynamic equations, and the latter used to model the polymer dynamics. The kinetics of the polymers is introduced using constitutive equations for viscoelastic fluids with finitely extensible non-linear elastic dumbbells with Peterlin's closure (FENE-P). The numerical model is first benchmarked by characterizing the rheological behaviour of dilute homogeneous solutions in various configurat…
Immiscible fluid displacement in porous media occurs in several natural and industrial processes. For example, during petroleum extraction from porous rock reservoirs, water is used to displace oil. In this paper, we investigate primary drainage and imbibition in a heterogeneous porous medium using an improved numerical model based on the multicomponent pseudopotential lattice Boltzmann method. We apply recent developments from the literature and develop new pressure boundary conditions. We show that the proposed model is able to simulate realistic viscosity ratios, and it allows independent t…
We present mesoscale numerical simulations based on the coupling of the fluctuating lattice Boltzmann method (FLBM) for multicomponent systems with a wetted finite-size particle model. This newly coupled methodologies are used to study the motion of a spherical particle driven by a constant body force in a confined channel with a fixed square cross-section. The channel is filled with a mixture of two liquids under the effect of thermal fluctuations. After some validations steps in absence of fluctuations, we study the fluctuations in the particle's velocity at changing thermal energy, applied …
We develop and implement a novel lattice Boltzmann scheme to study multicomponent flows on curved surfaces, coupling the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations with the Cahn-Hilliard equation to track the evolution of the binary fluid interfaces. Standard lattice Boltzmann method relies on regular Cartesian grids, which makes it generally unsuitable to study flow problems on curved surfaces. To alleviate this limitation, we use a vielbein formalism to write down the Boltzmann equation on an arbitrary geometry, and solve the evolution of the fluid distribution functions using a finite differenc…
The performances of the Color-Gradient (CG) and of the Shan-Chen (SC) multicomponent Lattice Boltzmann models are quantitatively compared side-by-side on multiple physical flow problems where breakup, coalescence and contraction of fluid ligaments are important. The flow problems are relevant to microfluidic applications, jetting of microdroplets as seen in inkjet printing, as well as emulsion dynamics. A significantly wider range of parameters is shown to be accessible for CG in terms of density-ratio, viscosity-ratio and surface tension values. Numerical stability for a high density ratio $\…
We derive multicomponent relativistic second-order dissipative fluid dynamics from the Boltzmann equations for a reactive mixture of $N_{\text{spec}}$ particle species with $N_q$ intrinsic quantum numbers (e.g. electric charge, baryon number, and strangeness) using the method of moments. We obtain the continuity equations for multiple conserved charges as well as the conservation equations for the total energy and momentum in the single-fluid approximation. These $4+N_q$ conservation laws are closed by deriving the second-order equations of motion for the dissipative quantities in the $(10+4N_…
In this paper we derive a class of thermodynamically consistent diffuse-interface mixture models of incompressible multicomponent fluids. The class of mixture models is fully compatible with the continuum theory of mixtures. The resulting mixture models may be formulated either in constituent or in mixture quantities. This permits a direct comparison with the Navier-Stokes Cahn-Hilliard model with non-matching densities, which reveals the key modeling simplifications of the latter.
In the boundary layer of multicomponent fluid mixtures, the species-specific mass flux in the wall-normal direction is determined by the combination of turbulent-diffusiophoretic diffusion due to composition gradients, and diffusion due to gradients in other scalar fields (e.g. thermophoresis, barophoresis, and forced diffusion). For inert mixtures, a balance must exist between all the diffusive transport mechanisms so that the net diffusive mass flux normal to the wall is zero everywhere. This paper discusses under which conditions non-constant composition profiles are necessary to obtain phy…
In the turbulent boundary layer of multicomponent fluid mixtures, the species-specific mass flux is determined by the combination of turbulent-diffusiophoretic diffusion and diffusion due to gradients in supplementary fields (e.g. temperature). For inert mixtures, a balance must exist between all the diffusive transport mechanisms so that the net diffusive mass flux normal to the wall is zero everywhere. This may require non-constant composition profiles. Implications are discussed, and mathematical modelling is employed to demonstrate how this may affect fluid property profiles, wall heat flu…
The Lattice Boltzmann method has been gaining acceptance for hydrodynamic problems involving complex boundaries, non-equilibrium dynamics and interfacial phenomena in multiphase or multicomponent systems. lb2d.pm is a Perl module offering a clear framework for simple Lattice Boltzmann simulations in 2D. The syntax and some basic applications are presented. Mainly, the new version 0.1 enables solute transport and accounts for reactive boundaries leading to surface growth.
The applicability of theories describing the kinetic evolution of fluid mixtures depends on the underlying physical assumptions. The Maxwell-Stefan equations, widely used for miscible fluids, express forces depending on coupled fluxes. They need to be inverted to recover a Fickian form which is generally impossible analytically. Moreover, the concentration dependence of the diffusivities has to be modelled, e.g. by the multicomponent Darken equation. Cahn-Hilliard type equations are preferred for immiscible mixtures, whereby different assumptions on the coupling of fluxes lead to the slow-mode…
In this paper, we present a splitting algorithm to solve multicomponent transport models. These models are related to plasma simulations, in which we consider the local thermodynamic equilibrium and weakly ionised plasma-mixture models that are used for medical and technical applications in etching processes. These multi-component transport-mixture models can be derived by approximately solving a linearised multi-component Boltzmann equation with an approximation of the collision terms in the mass, momentum and energy equations. The model-equations are nonlinear partial differential equations …
Implementing multicomponent diffusion models in numerical combustion studies is computationally expensive; to reduce cost, numerical simulations commonly use mixture-averaged diffusion treatments or simpler models. However, the accuracy and appropriateness of mixture-averaged diffusion has not been verified for three-dimensional, turbulent, premixed flames. In this study we evaluated the role of multicomponent mass diffusion in premixed, three-dimensional high Karlovitz-number hydrogen, n-heptane, and toluene flames, representing a range of fuel Lewis numbers. We also studied a premixed, unsta…
Current multi-component, multiphase pseudo-potential lattice Boltzmann models have thermodynamic inconsistencies that prevent them to correctly predict the thermodynamic phase behavior of partially miscible multi-component mixtures, such as hydrocarbon mixtures. This paper identifies these inconsistencies and attempts to design a thermodynamically consistent multi-component, multiphase pseudo-potential lattice Boltzmann model that allows mass transfer across the phase interfaces and is capable to predict the phase behavior of typically partially miscible hydrocarbon mixtures. The designed mode…
We apply lattice Boltzmann methods to study the relaxation of the velocity profile in binary fluids under shear during spinodal decomposition. In simple fluids, when a shear flow is applied on the boundaries of the system, the time required to obtain a triangular profile is inversely proportional to the viscosity and proportional to the square of the size of the system. We find that the same behaviour also occurs for binary mixtures, for any component ratio in the mixture and independently from the time when shear flow is switched on during phase separation.
Implementing multicomponent diffusion models in reacting-flow simulations is computationally expensive due to the challenges involved in calculating diffusion coefficients. Instead, mixture-averaged diffusion treatments are typically used to avoid these costs. However, to our knowledge, the accuracy and appropriateness of the mixture-averaged diffusion models has not been verified for three-dimensional turbulent premixed flames. In this study we propose a fast, efficient, low-memory algorithm and use that to evaluate the role of multicomponent mass diffusion in reacting-flow simulations. Direct…
Surfactants have been widely studied and used in controlling droplet evaporation. In this work, we observe and study the crystallization of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) within an evaporating glycerol-water mixture droplet. The crystallization is induced by the preferential evaporation of water, which decreases the solubility of SDS in the mixture. As a consequence, the crystals shield the droplet surface and cease the evaporation. The universality of the evaporation characteristics for a range of droplet sizes is revealed by applying a diffusion model, extended by Raoult's law. To describe the…
We consider the system of Maxwell-Stefan equations which describe multicomponent diffusive fluxes in non-dilute solutions or gas mixtures. We apply the Perron-Frobenius theorem to the irreducible and quasi-positive matrix which governs the flux-force relations and are able to show normal ellipticity of the associated multicomponent diffusion operator. This provides local-in-time wellposedness of the Maxwell-Stefan multicomponent diffusion system in the isobaric, isothermal case.
We present Sailfish, an open source fluid simulation package implementing the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) on modern Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) using CUDA/OpenCL. We take a novel approach to GPU code implementation and use run-time code generation techniques and a high level programming language (Python) to achieve state of the art performance, while allowing easy experimentation with different LBM models and tuning for various types of hardware. We discuss the general design principles of the code, scaling to multiple GPUs in a distributed environment, as well as the GPU implementatio…
Diffusive transport of mass occurs at small scales in turbulent premixed flames. As a result, multicomponent mass diffusion, which is often neglected in direct numerical simulations (DNS) of premixed combustion, has the potential to impact both turbulence and flame characteristics at small scales. In this study, we evaluate these impacts by examining enstrophy dynamics and the internal structure of the flame for lean premixed hydrogen-air combustion, neglecting secondary Soret and Dufour effects. We performed three-dimensional DNS of these flames by implementing the Stefan-Maxwell equations in…
We study the structure of a shock wave for a two-, three- and four-component gas mixture on the basis of numerical solution of the Boltzmann equation for the model of hard sphere molecules. For the evaluation of collision integrals we use the Conservative Projection Method developed by F.G. Tscheremissine which we extended to gas mixtures in cylindrical coordinates. The transition from the upstream to downstream uniform state is presented by macroscopic values and distribution functions. The obtained results were compared with numerical and experimental results of other authors.
Gas separation of a binary gaseous mixture is one of characteristic phenomena in the micro-scale flows that differ from the conventional size flows. In this work, the separation in a binary gas mixture flows through a microchannel is investigated by the lattice Boltzmann method with a diffuse-bounce-back (DBB) boundary condition. The separation degree and rate are measured in the He--Ar and Ne--Ar systems for different mole fractions, pressure ratios, and Knudsen numbers. The results show that the separation phenomenon in the He--Ar mixture is more obvious than that in the Ne--Ar mixture at th…
A new lattice Boltzmann model (LBM) for chemically reactive mixtures is presented. The approach capitalizes on the recently introduced thermodynamically consistent LBM for multicomponent mixtures of ideal gases. Similar to the non-reactive case, the present LBM features Stefan--Maxwell diffusion of chemical species and a fully on-lattice mean-field realization of the momentum and energy of the flow. Besides introducing the reaction mechanism into the kinetic equations for the species, the proposed LBM also features a new realization of the compressible flow by using a concept of extended equil…
Over the last two decades, lattice Boltzmann methods have become an increasingly popular tool to compute the flow in complex geometries such as porous media. In addition to single phase simulations allowing, for example, a precise quantification of the permeability of a porous sample, a number of extensions to the lattice Boltzmann method are available which allow to study multiphase and multicomponent flows on a pore scale level. In this article we give an extensive overview on a number of these diffuse interface models and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, we shortly r…
Numerical solution of non-steady problems of supersonic inflow of a binary mixture of a rarefied gas on a normally posed wall with mirror and diffuse reflection laws is obtained on the basis of the kinetic Boltzmann equation for the model of hard sphere molecules. For calculation of collision integrals we apply the projection method, developed by Tcheremissine for a one-component gas and generalized by the author for a binary gas mixture in the case of cylindrical symmetry. We demonstrate a good qualitative agreement of our results with other authors for one-component gases.
We report a hybrid numerical method for the solution of the model H fluctuating hydrodynamic equations for binary mixtures. The momentum conservation equations with Landau-Lifshitz stresses are solved using the fluctuating lattice Boltzmann equation while the order parameter conservation equation with Langevin fluxes are solved using the stochastic method of lines. Two methods, based on finite difference and finite volume, are proposed for spatial discretisation of the order parameter equation. Special care is taken to ensure that the fluctuation-dissipation theorem is maintained at the lattic…
A new lattice Boltzmann model for reactive ideal gas mixtures is presented. The model is an extension to reactive flows of the recently proposed multi-component lattice Boltzmann model for compressible ideal gas mixtures with Stefan-Maxwell diffusion for species interaction. First, the kinetic model for the Stefan--Maxwell diffusion is enhanced to accommodate a source term accounting the change of the mixture composition due to chemical reaction. Second, by including the heat of formation in the energy equation, the thermodynamic consistency of the underlying compressible lattice Boltzmann mod…
Multicomponent gas transport is investigated with unprecedented precision by AC impedance analysis of porous YSZ anode-supported solid oxide fuel cells. A fuel gas mixture of H2-H2O-N2 is fed to the anode, and impedance data are measured across the range of hydrogen partial pressure (10-100%) for open circuit conditions at three temperatures (800C, 850C and 900C) and for 300mA applied current at 800C. For the first time, analytical formulae for the diffusion resistance (Rb) of three standard models of multicomponent gas transport (Fick, Stefan-Maxwell, and Dusty Gas) are derived and tested aga…
We use free energy lattice Boltzmann methods (FRE LBM) to simulate shear and extensional flow of a binary mixture in two and three dimensions. To this end, two classical configurations are digitally twinned, namely a parallel-band device for binary shear flow and a four-roller apparatus for binary extensional flow. The FRE LBM and the test cases are implemented in the open-source C++ framework OpenLB and evaluated for several non-dimensional numbers. Characteristic deformations are captured, where breakup mechanisms occur for critical capillary regimes. Though the known mass leakage for small …
Particle stabilized emulsions are ubiquitous in the food and cosmetics industry, but our understanding of the influence of microscopic fluid-particle and particle-particle interactions on the macroscopic rheology is still limited. In this paper we present a simulation algorithm based on a multicomponent lattice Boltzmann model to describe the solvents combined with a molecular dynamics solver for the description of the solved particles. It is shown that the model allows a wide variation of fluid properties and arbitrary contact angles on the particle surfaces. We demonstrate its applicability …
The late-stage demixing following spinodal decomposition of a three-dimensional symmetric binary fluid mixture is studied numerically, using a thermodynamicaly consistent lattice Boltzmann method. We combine results from simulations with different numerical parameters to obtain an unprecendented range of length and time scales when expressed in reduced physical units. Using eight large (256^3) runs, the resulting composite graph of reduced domain size l against reduced time t covers 1 < l < 10^5, 10 < t < 10^8. Our data is consistent with the dynamical scaling hypothesis, that l(t) is a univer…
We extend a recently proposed ternary free energy lattice Boltzmann model with high density contrast, by incorporating wetting boundaries at solid walls. The approaches are based on forcing and geometric schemes, with implementations optimised for ternary (and more generally higher order multicomponent) models. Advantages and disadvantages of each method are addressed by performing both static and dynamic tests, including the capillary filling dynamics of a liquid displacing the gas phase, and the self-propelled motion of a train of drops. Furthermore, we measure dynamic angles and show that t…
