Numerical solution of non-steady problems of supersonic inflow of a binary mixture of a rarefied gas on a normally posed wall with mirror and diffuse reflection laws is obtained on the basis of the kinetic Boltzmann equation for the model of hard sphere molecules. For calculation of collision integrals we apply the projection method, developed by Tcheremissine for a one-component gas and generalized by the author for a binary gas mixture in the case of cylindrical symmetry. We demonstrate a good qualitative agreement of our results with other authors for one-component gases.
A D2Q9 Hybrid Lattice Boltzmann Method (HLBM) is proposed for the simulation of both compressible subsonic and supersonic flows. This HLBM is an extension of the model of Feng et al: [12], which has been found, via different test cases, to be unstable for supersonic regimes. The improvements consist of: (1) a new discretization of the lattice closure correction term making possible to properly simulate supersonic flows, (2) a corrected viscous stress tensor that takes into account polyatomic gases, and (3) a novel discretization of the viscous heat production term fitting with the regularized …
A double-distribution-function based lattice Boltzmann method (DDF-LBM) is proposed for the simulation of polyatomic gases in the supersonic regime. The model relies on an extended equilibrium state that is constructed to reproduce the first 13 moments of the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution exactly. This extends the validity of the standard 5-constraint (mass, momentum and energy) approach and leads to the correct simulation of thermal, compressible flows with only 39 discrete velocities in 3D. The stability of this BGK-LBM is reinforced by relying on Knudsen-number-dependent relaxation times t…
Interactions of supersonic uniform streams with cylindrical bodies, placed in open channels, are studied. Channels of rotation with the interval of cross-sectional area decreasing are considered. Two-dimensional Euler equations are solved by an implicit third order Runge-Kutta scheme. Self-oscillatory regimes are found in CFD studies at stream Mach numbers of 3 to 4.5.
Multidimensional numerical simulations of a homogeneous, chemically reactive gas were used to study ignition, flame stability, and deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) in a supersonic combustor. The configuration studied was a rectangular channel with a supersonic inflow of stoichiometric ethylene-oxygen and a transimissive outflow boundary. The calculation is initialized with a velocity in the computational domain equal to that of the inflow, which is held constant for the duration of the calculation. The compressible reactive Navier-Stokes equations were solved by a high-order numeric…
Three-dimensional melting problems are investigated numerically with Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). Regarding algorithm's accuracy and stability, Multiple-Relaxation-Time (MRT) models are employed to simplify the collision term in LBM. Temperature and velocity fields are solved with double distribution functions, respectively. 3-D melting problems are solved with double MRT models for the first time in this article. The key point for the numerical simulation of a melting problem is the methods to obtain the location of the melting front and this article uses interfacial tracking method. The i…
Intense heat-mass transfer in a gas flow to a condensation surface is studied with the consistent atomistic and kinetic theory methods. The simple moment method is utilized for solving the Boltzmann kinetic equation (BKE) for the nonequilibrium gas flow and its condensation, while molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of a similar flow is used for verification of BKE results. We demonstrate that BKE can provide the steady flow profiles close to those obtained from MD simulations in both subsonic and supersonic regimes of steady gas flows. Surprisingly, the elementary theory of condensation is sho…
Convection heat transfer in porous media is a universal phenomenon in nature, and it is also frequently encountered in scientific and engineering fields. An in-depth understanding of the fundamental mechanism of convection heat transfer in porous media requires efficient and powerful numerical tools. In this paper, a cascaded lattice Boltzmann (CLB) method for convection heat transfer in porous media at the representative elementary volume (REV) scale is presented. In the CLB method, the flow field is solved by an isothermal CLB model with the D2Q9 lattice based on the generalized non-Darcy mo…
An analytical model is developed to study the sound produced by the interaction between shock and instability waves in two-dimensional supersonic jet flows. The jet is considered to be of vortex-sheet type and 2D Euler equations are linearised to determine the governing equations for shock, instability waves, and their interaction. Pack's model is used to describe shock waves, while instability waves are calculated using spatial stability analysis. The interaction between shock and instability waves can be solved analytically by performing Fourier transform and subsequently using the method of…
In this paper, a fractional step lattice Boltzmann method is proposed to model two-phase flows with large density differences by solving Cahn-Hilliard phase-field equation and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. In order to maintain a hyperbolic tangent property of the interface profile and conserve the volume, an interfacial profile correction term and a flux correction term are added into the original Cahn-Hilliard equation respectively. By using a fractional step scheme, the modified Cahn-Hilliard equation is split into two sub-equations. One is solved in the framework of lattice Bol…
We propose a multi-component discrete Boltzmann model (DBM) for premixed, nonpremixed, or partially premixed nonequilibrium reactive flows. This model is suitable for both subsonic and supersonic flows with or without chemical reaction and/or external force. A two-dimensional sixteen-velocity model is constructed for the DBM. In the hydrodynamic limit, the DBM recovers the modified Navier-Stokes equations for reacting species in a force field. Compared to standard lattice Boltzmann models, the DBM presents not only more accurate hydrodynamic quantities, but also detailed nonequilibrium effects…

An iterative scheme can be used to find a steady-state solution to the Boltzmann equation, however, it is very slow to converge in the near-continuum flow regime. In this paper, a synthetic iterative scheme is developed to speed up the solution of the linearized Boltzmann equation. The velocity distribution function is first solved by the conventional iterative scheme, then it is corrected such that the macroscopic flow velocity is governed by a diffusion equation which is asymptotic-preserving in the Navier-Stokes limit. The efficiency of the new scheme is verified by calculating the eigenval…
The performance of high-order gas-kinetic scheme (HGKS) has been investigated for the direct numerical simulation (DNS) of isotropic compressible turbulence up to the supersonic regime. Due to the multi-scale nature and coupled temporal-spatial evolution process, HGKS provides a valid tool for the numerical simulation of compressible turbulent flow. Based on the domain decomposition and message passing interface (MPI), a parallel HGKS code is developed for large-scale computation in this paper. The standard tests from the nearly incompressible flow to the supersonic one, including Taylor-Green…
For a massless gas with constant cross section in a homogeneous, isotropically expanding spacetime we reformulate the relativistic Boltzmann equation as a set of non-linear coupled moment equations. For a particular initial condition this set can be solved exactly, yielding the first analytical solution of the Boltzmann equation for an expanding system. The non-equilibrium behavior of this relativistic gas can be mapped onto that of a homogeneous, static non-relativistic gas of Maxwell molecules.

This paper proposes an approach combining the Volume Penalization (VP) and the the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) to compute fluid structure interaction involving rigid bodies. The method consists in adding a force term in the LBM formulation, and thus considers the rigid body similar to particular porous media. Using a characteristic function for the solid domain avoids the expensive tracking of the fluid-solid interface employed commonly in LBM to treat FSI problems. The method is applied to three FSI problems and solved using a Graphics Processor Units (GPU) device. The applications focus o…
It is challenging to solve the Boltzmann equation accurately due to the extremely high dimensionality and nonlinearity. This paper addresses the idea and implementation of the first flux reconstruction method for high-order Boltzmann solutions. Based on the Lagrange interpolation and reconstruction, the kinetic upwind flux functions are solved simultaneously within physical and particle velocity space. The fast spectral method is incorporated to solve the full Boltzmann collision integral with a general collision kernel. The explicit singly diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta (ESDIRK) method is em…
In this paper, a non-orthogonal multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann (LB) method for simulating incompressible thermal flows is presented. In the method, the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and temperature equation are solved separately by two different MRT-LB equations, which are developed based on non-orthogonal basis vectors obtained from the combinations of the lattice velocity components. The macroscopic governing equations of incompressible thermal flows can be recovered from the method through the Chapman-Enskog analysis in the incompressible limit. Numerical simulati…
We study a two phase flow with interactions of liquid and rarefied gas inside the gas phase. The gas phase is modeled by the BGK model of the Boltzmann equation. The liquid phase is modeled by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. In this paper we have excluded the heat transfer between two phases. The interface boundary conditions for the liquid and gas phases is presented. The BGK model is solved by a semi-Lagrangian scheme with a meshfree reconstruction since the droplet moves inside the gas phase and its interface deforms with respect to time and space. Therefore, the similar meshfre…
New method to simulate heat transport in multiphase lattice Boltzmann (LB) method is proposed. The energy transport equation needs to be solved when phase boundaries are present. Internal energy is represented by an additional set of distribution functions, which evolve according to a LB-like equation simulating the transport of a passive scalar. Parasitic heat diffusion near boundaries with large density gradient is supressed by using the interparticle "pseudoforces" which prevent the spreading of energy. The compression work and heat diffusion are calculated by finite differences. The latent…
In this paper, we consider the capabilities of the Boltzmann equation with the Shakhov and ellipsoidal models for the collision term to capture the characteristics of rarefied gas flows. The benchmark is performed by comparing the results obtained using these kinetic model equations with direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) results for particles interacting via ab initio potentials. The analysis is restricted to channel flows between parallel plates and we consider three flow problems, namely: the heat transfer between stationary plates, the Couette flow and the heat transfer under shear. The …
Callaway's dual relaxation times model, which takes into account the normal and resistive scatterings of phonon, is used to describe the heat conduction in materials like graphene. For steady-state problems, the Callaway model is usually solved by the conventional iterative scheme (CIS), which is efficient in the ballistic regime, but inefficient in the diffusive/hydrodynamic regime. In this paper, a general synthetic iterative scheme (GSIS) is proposed to expedite the convergence to steady-state solutions. First, macroscopic synthetic equations are designed to guide the evolution of equilibri…
