A D2Q9 Hybrid Lattice Boltzmann Method (HLBM) is proposed for the simulation of both compressible subsonic and supersonic flows. This HLBM is an extension of the model of Feng et al: [12], which has been found, via different test cases, to be unstable for supersonic regimes. The improvements consist of: (1) a new discretization of the lattice closure correction term making possible to properly simulate supersonic flows, (2) a corrected viscous stress tensor that takes into account polyatomic gases, and (3) a novel discretization of the viscous heat production term fitting with the regularized formalism. The result is a hybrid method that resolves the mass and momentum equations with an LBM algorithm, and resolves the entropy-based energy equation with a finite volume method. This approach fully recovers the physics of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations with the ideal gas equation of state, and is valid from subsonic to supersonic regimes. It is then successfully assessed with both smooth flows and flows involving shocks. The proposed model is shown to be an efficient, accurate, and robust alternative to classic Navier-Stokes methods for the simulation of compressible flows
Intense heat-mass transfer in a gas flow to a condensation surface is studied with the consistent atomistic and kinetic theory methods. The simple moment method is utilized for solving the Boltzmann kinetic equation (BKE) for the nonequilibrium gas flow and its condensation, while molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of a similar flow is used for verification of BKE results. We demonstrate that BKE can provide the steady flow profiles close to those obtained from MD simulations in both subsonic and supersonic regimes of steady gas flows. Surprisingly, the elementary theory of condensation is sho…
The probability density function (PDF) of the gas density in subsonic and supersonic, isothermal, driven turbulence is analyzed with a systematic set of hydrodynamical grid simulations with resolutions up to 1024^3 cells. We performed a series of numerical experiments with root mean square (r.m.s.) Mach number M ranging from the nearly incompressible, subsonic (M=0.1) to the highly compressible, supersonic (M=15) regime. We study the influence of two extreme cases for the driving mechanism by applying a purely solenoidal (divergence-free) and a purely compressive (curl-free) forcing field to d…
We study the radiative hydrodynamics flow of radiation-driven heat waves in hot dense plasmas, using approximate self-similar solutions. Specifically, we have focused on the intermediate regime between pure radiative supersonic flow and the pure subsonic regime. These two regimes were investigated both using exact self-similar solutions and numerical simulations, however, most of the study used numerical simulations, mainly because the radiative heat wave and the shock regions are not self-similar altogether. In a milestone work [J. Garnier et al., Phys. Plas., 13, 092703 (2006)], it was found…
We provide an experimental demonstration that the circular hydraulic jump represents a hydrodynamic white hole or gravitational fountain (the time-reverse of a black hole) by measuring the angle of the Mach cone created by an object in the "supersonic" inner flow region. We emphasise the general character of this gravitational analogy by showing theoretically that the white hole horizon constitutes a stationary and spatial saddle-node bifurcation within dynamical-systems theory. We also demonstrate that the inner region has a "superluminal" dispersion relation, i.e., that the group velocity of…
As a first step towards the asymptotic description of coherent structures in compressible shear flows, we present a description of nonlinear equilibrium solutions of the Navier--Stokes equations in the compressible asymptotic suction boundary layer (ASBL). The free-stream Mach number is assumed to be $< 0.8$ so that the flow is in the subsonic regime and we assume a perfect gas. We extend the large-Reynolds number free-stream coherent structure theory of \cite{deguchi_hall_2014a} for incompressible ASBL flow to describe a nonlinear interaction in a thin layer situated just below the free-strea…

Understanding the physics of turbulence is crucial for many applications, including weather, industry, and astrophysics. In the interstellar medium (ISM), supersonic turbulence plays a crucial role in controlling the gas density and velocity structure, and ultimately the birth of stars. Here we present a simulation of interstellar turbulence with a grid resolution of 10048^3 cells that allows us to determine the position and width of the sonic scale (l_s) - the transition from supersonic to subsonic turbulence. The simulation simultaneously resolves the supersonic and subsonic cascade, v(l) ~ …
Highly supersonic, compressible turbulence is thought to be of tantamount importance for star formation processes in the interstellar medium. Likewise, cosmic structure formation is expected to give rise to subsonic turbulence in the intergalactic medium, which may substantially modify the thermodynamic structure of gas in virialized dark matter halos and affect small-scale mixing processes in the gas. Numerical simulations have played a key role in characterizing the properties of astrophysical turbulence, but thus far systematic code comparisons have been restricted to the supersonic regime,…
We investigate diffusion in supersonic, turbulent, compressible flows. Supersonic turbulence can be characterized as network of interacting shocks. We consider flows with different rms Mach numbers and where energy necessary to maintain dynamical equilibrium is inserted at different spatial scales. We find that turbulent transport exhibits super-diffusive behavior due to induced bulk motions. In a comoving reference frame, however, diffusion behaves normal and can be described by mixing length theory extended into the supersonic regime.
One approach to reduce the cost to simulate transitional compressible boundary layer flow is to adopt a near body reduced domain with boundary conditions enforced to be compatible with a computationally cheaper 3D RANS simulation. In such an approach it is desirable to enforce a consistent pressure distribution which is not typically the case when using the standard Riemann inflow boundary condition. We revisit the Riemann problem adopted in many DG based high fidelity formulations. Through analysis of the 1D linearised Euler equations it is demonstrated that maintaining entropy compatibility …
A generalized approach to decompose the compressible Navier-Stokes equations into an equivalent set of coupled equations for flow and acoustics is introduced. As a significant extension to standard hydrodynamic/acoustic splitting methods, the approach provides the essential coupling terms, which account for the feedback from the acoustics to the flow. A unique simplified version of the split equation system with feedback is derived that conforms to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the subsonic flow regime, where the feedback reduces to one additional term in the flow momentum equati…
The turbulent dynamo may explain the origin of cosmic magnetism. While the exponential amplification of magnetic fields has been studied for incompressible gases, little is known about dynamo action in highly-compressible, supersonic plasmas, such as the interstellar medium of galaxies and the early Universe. Here we perform the first quantitative comparison of theoretical models of the dynamo growth rate and saturation level with three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical simulations of supersonic turbulence with grid resolutions of up to 1024^3 cells. We obtain numerical convergence and find th…
The direct numerical simulation (DNS) of compressible isotropic turbulence up to the supersonic regime $Ma_{t} = 1.2$ has been investigated by high-order gas-kinetic scheme (HGKS) [{\it{Computers}} \& {\it{Fluids, 192, 2019}}]. In this study, the coarse-grained analysis of subgrid-scale (SGS) turbulent kinetic energy $K_{sgs}$ budget is fully analyzed for constructing one-equation SGS model in the compressible large eddy simulation (LES). The DNS on a much higher turbulent Mach number up to $Ma_{t} = 2.0$ has been obtained by HGKS, which confirms the super robustness of HGKS. Then, the exact c…
A double-distribution-function based lattice Boltzmann method (DDF-LBM) is proposed for the simulation of polyatomic gases in the supersonic regime. The model relies on an extended equilibrium state that is constructed to reproduce the first 13 moments of the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution exactly. This extends the validity of the standard 5-constraint (mass, momentum and energy) approach and leads to the correct simulation of thermal, compressible flows with only 39 discrete velocities in 3D. The stability of this BGK-LBM is reinforced by relying on Knudsen-number-dependent relaxation times t…
In this paper, we investigate steady inviscid compressible flows with radial symmetry in an annulus. The major concerns are transonic flows with or without shocks. One of the main motivations is to elucidate the role played by the angular velocity in the structure of steady inviscid compressible flows. We give a complete classification of flow patterns in terms of boundary conditions at the inner and outer circle. Due to the nonzero angular velocity, many new flow patterns will appear. There exists accelerating or decelerating smooth transonic flows in an annulus satisfying one side boundary c…
We perform particle-resolved simulations of subsonic and transonic flows past random arrays of spherical particles. The Reynolds number is held at $Re{\approx}300$ to ensure the flow remains in the continuum regime. At low volume fractions, the drag force increases sharply near a critical Mach number due to the formation of shock waves and reaches a maximum value when the bulk flow is supersonic. Neighbour-induced hydrodynamic interactions reduce the critical Mach number at higher volume fractions. An effective Mach number is introduced to capture the increase in compressibility effects on dra…
We consider the propagation of sound in a waveguide with an impedance wall. In the low frequency regime, the first effect of the impedance is to decrease the propagation speed of acoustic waves. Therefore, a flow in the duct can exceed the wave propagation speed at low Mach numbers, making it effectively supersonic. We analyze a setup where the impedance along the wall varies such that the duct is supersonic then subsonic in a finite region and supersonic again. In this specific configuration, the subsonic region act as a resonant cavity, and triggers a laser-like instability. We show that the…
Supersonic turbulence plays an important role in a number of extreme astrophysical and terrestrial environments, yet its understanding remains rudimentary. We use data from a three-dimensional simulation of supersonic isothermal turbulence to reconstruct an exact fourth-order relation derived analytically from the Navier-Stokes equations (Galtier and Banerjee, Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 107, 2011, p. 134501). Our analysis supports a Kolmogorov-like inertial energy cascade in supersonic turbulence previously discussed on a phenomenological level. We show that two compressible analogues of the four-…
Compressible turbulence shapes the structure of the interstellar medium of our Galaxy and likely plays an important role also during structure formation in the early Universe. The density PDF and the power spectrum of such compressible, supersonic turbulence are the key ingredients for theories of star formation. However, both the PDF and the spectrum are still a matter of debate, because theoretical predictions are limited and simulations of supersonic turbulence require enormous resolutions to capture the inertial-range scaling. To advance our limited knowledge of compressible turbulence, we…
In this work, a discontinuous Galerkin scheme is employed to perform LES simulations of supersonic jet flows. A total of four simulations are performed with different meshes and order of accuracy. The number of degrees of freedom from the simulations varies from 50 x 106 to 400 x 106. The results indicate that by increasing the resolution of simulation, in general, the results got closer to experimental data. The jet lipline is the only region in which this behavior is not observed. It investigated a procedure of using lower-order simulations to initialize high-order simulations and consequent…
This paper sums up some recent validations of an immersed boundary method for compressible flow simulations. It has been already shown that this method is able to provide accurate results without meshing effort around more or less complex geometries. Here, the authors focus on several simple test cases to assess the application range of the method. From subsonic to hypersonic flows, from steady to large-eddy unsteady simulations, in 2D or 3D, results are compared to classical simulations with body-fitted meshes and experiment. Moreover, the use of an efficient Navier-Stokes solver for all the …
Parallel Nodal Interior-Penalty Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for the Subsonic Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations: Applications to Vortical Flows and VIV Problems
A homogenization approach is proposed for the treatment of porous wall boundary conditions in the computation of compressible viscous flows. Like any other homogenization approach, it eliminates the need for pore-resolved fluid meshes and therefore enables practical flow simulations in computational fluid domains with porous wall boundaries. Unlike alternative approaches however, it does not require prescribing a mass flow rate and does not introduce in the computational model a heuristic discharge coefficient. Instead, it models the inviscid flux through a porous wall surrounded by the flow a…
The role of supersonic turbulence in structuring the interstellar medium (ISM) remains an unsettled question. Here, this problem is investigated using a newexact law of compressible isothermal hydrodynamic turbulence, which involves two-point correlations in physical space. The new law is shown to have a compact expression that contains a single flux term reminiscent of the incompressible case and a source term with a simple expression whose sign is given by the divergence of the velocity. The law is then used to investigate the properties of such a turbulence at integral Mach number $4$ produ…
In this paper, a novel immersed boundary method is developed, validated, and applied. Through devising a second-order three-step flow reconstruction scheme, the proposed method is able to enforce the Dirichlet, Neumann, Robin, and Cauchy boundary conditions in a straightforward and consistent manner. Equipped with a fluid-solid coupling framework that integrates high-order temporal and spatial discretization schemes, numerical experiments concerning flow involving stationary and moving objects, convex and concave geometries, no-slip and slip wall boundary conditions, as well as subsonic and su…
An analysis of calibration for reduced-order models (ROMs) is presented in this work. The Galerkin and least-squares Petrov-Galerkin (LSPG) methods are tested on compressible flows involving a disparity of temporal scales. A novel calibration strategy is proposed for the LSPG method and two test cases are analyzed. The first consists of a subsonic airfoil flow where boundary layer instabilities are responsible for trailing-edge noise generation and the second comprises a supersonic airfoil flow with a transient period where a detached shock wave propagates upstream at the same time that shock-…
In this paper, we intend to address the high-order gas-kinetic scheme (HGKS) in the direct numerical simulation (DNS) of compressible isotropic turbulence up to the supersonic regime. With the consideration of robustness and accuracy, the WENO-Z scheme is adopted for spatial reconstruction in the current higher-order scheme. Statistical quantities are compared with the high-order compact finite difference scheme to determine the spatial and temporal criterion for DNS. According to the grid and time convergence study, it can be concluded that the minimum spatial resolution parameter $κ_{max} η_…

In this paper, the problem of compressible flow over a thin airfoil located near the ground is studied. A singular integral equation, also known as Possio equation, that relates the pressure jump along the airfoil to its downwash is derived. The derivation of the equation utilizes Laplace transform, Fourier transform, method of images, and theory of Mikhlin multipliers. The existence and uniqueness of solution to the Possio equation is verified for the steady state case and an approximate solution is obtained. The aerodynamic loads are then calculated based on the approximate solution. Moreove…
Using data from a large-scale three-dimensional simulation of supersonic isothermal turbulence, we have tested the validity of an exact flux relation derived analytically from the Navier--Stokes equation by Falkovich, Fouxon and Oz [2010 New relations for correlation functions in Navier--Stokes turbulence. J. Fluid Mech. 644, 465]. That relation, for compressible barotropic fluids, was derived assuming turbulence generated by a large-scale force. However, compressible turbulence in simulations is usually initialized and maintained by a large-scale acceleration, as in gravity-driven astrophysic…
When an upstream steady uniform supersonic flow impinges onto a symmetric straight-sided wedge, governed by the Euler equations, there are two possible steady oblique shock configurations if the wedge angle is less than the detachment angle -- the steady weak shock with supersonic or subsonic downstream flow (determined by the wedge angle that is less or larger than the sonic angle) and the steady strong shock with subsonic downstream flow, both of which satisfy the entropy condition. The fundamental issue -- whether one or both of the steady weak and strong shocks are physically admissible so…
Compressible flows around blunt objects have diverse applications, but present analytic treatments are inaccurate and limited to narrow parameter regimes. We show that the flow in front of an axisymmetric body is accurately derived analytically using a low order expansion of the perpendicular gradients in terms of the parallel velocity. This reproduces both subsonic and supersonic flows measured and simulated for a sphere, including the transonic regime and the bow shock properties.

The existence and uniqueness of two dimensional steady compressible Euler flows past a wall or a symmetric body are established. More precisely, given positive convex horizontal veloicty in the upstream, there exists a critical value $ρ_{cr}$ such that if the incoming density in the upstream is larger than $ρ_{cr}$, then there exists a subsonic flow past a wall. Furthermore, $ρ_{cr}$ is critical in the sense that there is no such subsonic flow if the density of the incoming flow is less than $ρ_{cr}$. The subsonic flows possess large vorticity and positive horizontal velocity above the wall ex…
The stability characteristics of compressible spanwise-periodic open-cavity flows are investigated with direct numerical simulation and biglobal stability analysis for rectangular cavities with aspect ratios of $L/D=2$ and 6. This study examines the behavior of instabilities with respect to stable/unstable steady states in the laminar regimes for subsonic and transonic conditions where compressibility plays an important role. It is observed that an increase in Mach number destabilizes the flow in the subsonic regime and stabilizes the flow in the transonic regime. Biglobal stability analysis i…
Current design constraints have encouraged the studies of aeroacoustic fields around compressible jet flows. The present work addresses the numerical study of unsteady turbulent jet flows as a preparation for future aeroacoustic analyses of main engine rocket plumes. An in-house large eddy simulation tool is used in order to reproduce high fidelity results of compressible jet flows. The large eddy simulation formulation is written using a second order numerical scheme for a finite difference spatial discretization. Numerical simulations of perfectly expanded jets are performed and the results …
A solid object impacting on liquid creates a liquid jet due to the collapse of the impact cavity. Using visualization experiments with smoke particles and multiscale simulations we show that in addition a high-speed air-jet is pushed out of the cavity. Despite an impact velocity of only 1 m/s, this air-jet attains \emph{supersonic} speeds already when the cavity is slightly larger than 1 mm in diameter. The structure of the air flow resembles closely that of compressible flow through a nozzle -- with the key difference that here the "nozzle" is a \emph{liquid} cavity shrinking rapidly in time.
We are concerned with the one-dimensional piston problem for the compressible Euler equations of Chaplygin gas. If the piston moves at constant subsonic speed to the uniform gas, there exists an integral weak solution for the piston problem, consisting of a shock separating constant states ahead of the piston. While if the speed of the piston is sonic or supersonic, a singular measure solution, with density containing a Dirac measure supported on the piston, shall be introduced to solve the problem. Integral weak solution exists for the piston receding from the gas with any constant speed, and…
Turbulence in compressible plasma plays a key role in many areas of astrophysics and engineering. The extreme plasma parameters in these environments, e.g. high Reynolds numbers, supersonic and super-Alfvenic flows, however, make direct numerical simulations computationally intractable even for the simplest treatment -- magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). To overcome this problem one can use subgrid-scale (SGS) closures -- models for the influence of unresolved, subgrid-scales on the resolved ones. In this work we propose and validate a set of constant coefficient closures for the resolved, compressib…
