As a first step towards the asymptotic description of coherent structures in compressible shear flows, we present a description of nonlinear equilibrium solutions of the Navier--Stokes equations in the compressible asymptotic suction boundary layer (ASBL). The free-stream Mach number is assumed to be $< 0.8$ so that the flow is in the subsonic regime and we assume a perfect gas. We extend the large-Reynolds number free-stream coherent structure theory of \cite{deguchi_hall_2014a} for incompressible ASBL flow to describe a nonlinear interaction in a thin layer situated just below the free-stream which produces streaky disturbances to both the velocity and temperature fields, which can grow exponentially towards the wall. We complete the description of the growth of the velocity and thermal streaks throughout the flow by solving the compressible boundary-region equations numerically. We show that the velocity and thermal streaks obtain their maximum amplitude in the unperturbed boundary layer. Increasing the free-stream Mach number enhances the thermal streaks, whereas varying the Prandtl number changes the location of the maximum amplitude of the thermal streak relative to the velocity streak. Such nonlinear equilibrium states have been implicated in shear transition in incompressible flows; therefore, our results indicate that a similar mechanism may also be present in compressible flows.
A D2Q9 Hybrid Lattice Boltzmann Method (HLBM) is proposed for the simulation of both compressible subsonic and supersonic flows. This HLBM is an extension of the model of Feng et al: [12], which has been found, via different test cases, to be unstable for supersonic regimes. The improvements consist of: (1) a new discretization of the lattice closure correction term making possible to properly simulate supersonic flows, (2) a corrected viscous stress tensor that takes into account polyatomic gases, and (3) a novel discretization of the viscous heat production term fitting with the regularized …
We perform particle-resolved simulations of subsonic and transonic flows past random arrays of spherical particles. The Reynolds number is held at $Re{\approx}300$ to ensure the flow remains in the continuum regime. At low volume fractions, the drag force increases sharply near a critical Mach number due to the formation of shock waves and reaches a maximum value when the bulk flow is supersonic. Neighbour-induced hydrodynamic interactions reduce the critical Mach number at higher volume fractions. An effective Mach number is introduced to capture the increase in compressibility effects on dra…

The probability density function (PDF) of the gas density in subsonic and supersonic, isothermal, driven turbulence is analyzed with a systematic set of hydrodynamical grid simulations with resolutions up to 1024^3 cells. We performed a series of numerical experiments with root mean square (r.m.s.) Mach number M ranging from the nearly incompressible, subsonic (M=0.1) to the highly compressible, supersonic (M=15) regime. We study the influence of two extreme cases for the driving mechanism by applying a purely solenoidal (divergence-free) and a purely compressive (curl-free) forcing field to d…
In this paper, the problem of compressible flow over a thin airfoil located near the ground is studied. A singular integral equation, also known as Possio equation, that relates the pressure jump along the airfoil to its downwash is derived. The derivation of the equation utilizes Laplace transform, Fourier transform, method of images, and theory of Mikhlin multipliers. The existence and uniqueness of solution to the Possio equation is verified for the steady state case and an approximate solution is obtained. The aerodynamic loads are then calculated based on the approximate solution. Moreove…
Parallel Nodal Interior-Penalty Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for the Subsonic Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations: Applications to Vortical Flows and VIV Problems
In this paper, we investigate steady inviscid compressible flows with radial symmetry in an annulus. The major concerns are transonic flows with or without shocks. One of the main motivations is to elucidate the role played by the angular velocity in the structure of steady inviscid compressible flows. We give a complete classification of flow patterns in terms of boundary conditions at the inner and outer circle. Due to the nonzero angular velocity, many new flow patterns will appear. There exists accelerating or decelerating smooth transonic flows in an annulus satisfying one side boundary c…
One approach to reduce the cost to simulate transitional compressible boundary layer flow is to adopt a near body reduced domain with boundary conditions enforced to be compatible with a computationally cheaper 3D RANS simulation. In such an approach it is desirable to enforce a consistent pressure distribution which is not typically the case when using the standard Riemann inflow boundary condition. We revisit the Riemann problem adopted in many DG based high fidelity formulations. Through analysis of the 1D linearised Euler equations it is demonstrated that maintaining entropy compatibility …
The stability characteristics of compressible spanwise-periodic open-cavity flows are investigated with direct numerical simulation and biglobal stability analysis for rectangular cavities with aspect ratios of $L/D=2$ and 6. This study examines the behavior of instabilities with respect to stable/unstable steady states in the laminar regimes for subsonic and transonic conditions where compressibility plays an important role. It is observed that an increase in Mach number destabilizes the flow in the subsonic regime and stabilizes the flow in the transonic regime. Biglobal stability analysis i…
Compressible flows around blunt objects have diverse applications, but present analytic treatments are inaccurate and limited to narrow parameter regimes. We show that the flow in front of an axisymmetric body is accurately derived analytically using a low order expansion of the perpendicular gradients in terms of the parallel velocity. This reproduces both subsonic and supersonic flows measured and simulated for a sphere, including the transonic regime and the bow shock properties.
A generalized approach to decompose the compressible Navier-Stokes equations into an equivalent set of coupled equations for flow and acoustics is introduced. As a significant extension to standard hydrodynamic/acoustic splitting methods, the approach provides the essential coupling terms, which account for the feedback from the acoustics to the flow. A unique simplified version of the split equation system with feedback is derived that conforms to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the subsonic flow regime, where the feedback reduces to one additional term in the flow momentum equati…
Weakly-compressible particle-based discretization methods, utilized for the solution of the subsonic Navier-Stokes equation, are gaining increasing popularity in the fluid dynamics community. One of the most popular among these methods is the weakly-compressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (WCSPH). Since the dynamics of a single numerical particle is determined by fluid dynamic transport equations, the particle per definition should represent a homogeneous fluid element. However, it can be easily argued that a single particle behaves only pseudo-Lagrangian as it is affected by volume parti…
Non-linear entropy stability and a summation-by-parts framework are used to derive entropy stable wall boundary conditions for the three-dimensional compressible Navier--Stokes equations. A semi-discrete entropy estimate for the entire domain is achieved when the new boundary conditions are coupled with an entropy stable discrete interior operator. The data at the boundary are weakly imposed using a penalty flux approach and a simultaneous-approximation-term penalty technique. Although discontinuous spectral collocation operators on unstructured grids are used herein for the purpose of demonst…
The existence and uniqueness of two dimensional steady compressible Euler flows past a wall or a symmetric body are established. More precisely, given positive convex horizontal veloicty in the upstream, there exists a critical value $ρ_{cr}$ such that if the incoming density in the upstream is larger than $ρ_{cr}$, then there exists a subsonic flow past a wall. Furthermore, $ρ_{cr}$ is critical in the sense that there is no such subsonic flow if the density of the incoming flow is less than $ρ_{cr}$. The subsonic flows possess large vorticity and positive horizontal velocity above the wall ex…
Compressible flows around blunt objects have diverse applications, but current analytic treatments are inaccurate and limited to narrow parameter regimes. We show that the gas-dynamic flow in front of an axisymmetric blunt body is accurately derived analytically using a low order expansion of the perpendicular gradients in terms of the parallel velocity. This reproduces both subsonic and supersonic flows measured and simulated for a sphere, including the transonic regime and the bow shock properties. Some astrophysical implications are outlined, in particular for planets in the solar wind and …
We develop a semi-implicit algorithm for time-accurate simulation of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, with special reference to wall-bounded flows. The method is based on linearization of the partial convective fluxes associated with acoustic waves, in such a way to suppress, or at least mitigate the acoustic time step limitation. Together with replacement of the total energy equation with the entropy transport equation, this approach avoids the inversion of block-banded matrices involved in classical methods, which is replaced by less demanding inversion of standard banded matrices. …
This paper sums up some recent validations of an immersed boundary method for compressible flow simulations. It has been already shown that this method is able to provide accurate results without meshing effort around more or less complex geometries. Here, the authors focus on several simple test cases to assess the application range of the method. From subsonic to hypersonic flows, from steady to large-eddy unsteady simulations, in 2D or 3D, results are compared to classical simulations with body-fitted meshes and experiment. Moreover, the use of an efficient Navier-Stokes solver for all the …
In a recent paper, Liu, Zhu and Wu (2015, {\it J. Fluid Mech.} {\bf 784}: 304) present a force theory for a body in a two-dimensional, viscous, compressible and steady flow. In this companion paper we do the same for three-dimensional flow. Using the fundamental solution of the linearized Navier-Stokes equations, we improve the force formula for incompressible flow originally derived by Goldstein in 1931 and summarized by Milne-Thomson in 1968, both being far from complete, to its perfect final form, which is further proved to be universally true from subsonic to supersonic flows. We call this…
In this work, the static stability of plates with fixed trailing edges in axial airflow is studied using the framework of Possio integral equation. First, we introduce a new derivation of a Possio integral equation that relates the pressure jump along thin plates to their downwash based on the linearization of the governing equations of an ideal compressible fluid. The steady state solution to the Possio equation is used to account for the aerodynamic forces in the steady state plate governing equation resulting in a singular differential-integral equation which is transformed to an integral e…
The subsonic, compressible, potential flow around a hypersphere can be derived using the Janzen-Rayleigh expansion (JRE) of the flow potential in even powers of the incident Mach number $\mathcal{M}_\infty$. JREs were carried out with terms polynomial in the inverse radius $r^{-1}$ to high orders in two dimensions (2D), but were limited to order $\mathcal{M}_\infty^4$ in three dimensions (3D). We derive general JRE formulae to arbitrary order, adiabatic index, and dimension. We find that powers of $\ln(r)$ can creep into the expansion, and are essential in 3D beyond order $\mathcal{M}_\infty^4…
The secondary atomization of liquid droplets is a common physical phenomenon in many industrial and engineering applications. Atomization in high speed compressible flows is less well understood than its more frequently studied low Mach number counterpart. The key to understanding the mechanisms of secondary atomization is examination of the breakup characteristics and droplet trajectories across a range of physical conditions. In this study, a planar shock wave impacting a cylindrical water column ($ρ_l=1000 \rm~kg/m^3$) is simulated for a range of Weber numbers ranging three orders of magnit…
In this paper, a novel immersed boundary method is developed, validated, and applied. Through devising a second-order three-step flow reconstruction scheme, the proposed method is able to enforce the Dirichlet, Neumann, Robin, and Cauchy boundary conditions in a straightforward and consistent manner. Equipped with a fluid-solid coupling framework that integrates high-order temporal and spatial discretization schemes, numerical experiments concerning flow involving stationary and moving objects, convex and concave geometries, no-slip and slip wall boundary conditions, as well as subsonic and su…
The majority of available numerical algorithms for interfacial two-phase flows either treat both fluid phases as incompressible (constant density) or treat both phases as compressible (variable density). This presents a limitation for the prediction of many two-phase flows, such as subsonic fuel injection, as treating both phases as compressible is computationally expensive due to the very stiff pressure-density-temperature coupling of liquids. A framework with the capability of treating one phase compressible and the other phase incompressible, therefore, has a significant potential to improv…
This study deals with the process and benefits of generating aerodynamic indicial-admittance functions with the support of computational fluid dynamics based on the Euler equations. A simple parametric analytical approximation is alongside developed based on linear lifting line and piston theory, for the sake of assessing the physical consistency of numerical solutions while investigating the suitability of theoretical models in the subsonic regime. Thin elliptical wings are hence considered and the design space is described by three parameters: wing aspect ratio (6, 8, 12, 20), free-stream Ma…
We investigate flows interacting with a square and a fractal shape multi-scale structures in the compressible regime for Mach numbers at subsonic and supersonic upstream conditions using large-eddy-simulations (LES). We also aim at identifying similarities and differences that these interactions have with corresponding interactions in the canonical incompressible flow problem. To account for the geometrical complexity associated with the fractal structures, we apply an immersed boundary method to model the no-slip boundary condition at the solid surfaces, with adequate mesh resolution in the v…
In a recent paper, Liu et al. [``Lift and drag in three-dimensional steady viscous and compressible flow'', Phys. Fluids 29, 116105 (2017)] obtained a universal theory for the aerodynamic force on a body in three-dimensional steady flow, effective from incompressible all the way to supersonic regimes. In this theory, the total aerodynamic force can be determined solely with the vorticity distribution on a single wake plane locating in the steady linear far field. Despite the vital importance of this result, its validity and performance in practice has not been investigated yet. In this paper, …
Highly supersonic, compressible turbulence is thought to be of tantamount importance for star formation processes in the interstellar medium. Likewise, cosmic structure formation is expected to give rise to subsonic turbulence in the intergalactic medium, which may substantially modify the thermodynamic structure of gas in virialized dark matter halos and affect small-scale mixing processes in the gas. Numerical simulations have played a key role in characterizing the properties of astrophysical turbulence, but thus far systematic code comparisons have been restricted to the supersonic regime,…
In our recent works we proposed a theory of turbulence in inertial gas flow via the mean field effect of an intermolecular potential. We found that, in inertial flow, turbulence indeed spontaneously develops from a laminar initial condition, just as observed in nature and experiments. However, we also found that density and temperature in our inertial flow model behave unrealistically. The goal of the current work is to demonstrate technical possibility of modeling compressible, turbulent flow at low Mach number where both density and temperature behave in a more realistic fashion. Here we foc…
We investigate the evolution of vortex-surface fields (VSFs) in compressible Taylor--Green flows at Mach numbers ($Ma$) ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 using direct numerical simulation. The formulation of VSFs in incompressible flows is extended to compressible flows, and a mass-based renormalization of VSFs is used to facilitate characterizing the evolution of a particular vortex surface. The effects of the Mach number on the VSF evolution are different in three stages. In the early stage, the jumps of the compressive velocity component near shocklets generate sinks to contract surrounding vortex su…
A Cartesian grid method combined with a simplified gas kinetic scheme is presented for subsonic and supersonic viscous flow simulation on complex geometries. Under the Cartesian mesh, the computational grid points are classified into four different categories, the fluid point, the solid point, the drop point, and the interpolation point. The boundaries are represented by a set of direction-oriented boundary points. A constrained weighted least square method is employed to evaluate the physical quantities at the interpolation points. Different boundary conditions, including isothermal boundary,…
Compressible vortex rings, usually formed at the open end of a shock tube, often show interesting phenomena during their formation, evolution, and propagation depending on the shock Mach number (Ms) and exit flow conditions. The Mach number of the translating compressible vortex rings (Mv) investigated so far in the literature is subsonic as, the shock tube pressure ratio (PR) considered is relatively low. In this numerical study we focus on low to high vortex ring Mach numbers (0.31 < Mv < 1.08) cases with a particular focus on very high Mv cases that are not been reported in experiments as, …
Thermodynamic nonequilibrium effects in three-dimensional high-speed compressible flows: Multiscale modeling and simulation via the discrete Boltzmann method
In the spirit of making high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods more competitive, researchers have developed the hybridized DG methods, a class of discontinuous Galerkin methods that generalizes the Hybridizable DG (HDG), the Embedded DG (EDG) and the Interior Embedded DG (IEDG) methods. These methods are amenable to hybridization (static condensation) and thus to more computationally efficient implementations. Like other high-order DG methods, however, they may suffer from numerical stability issues in under-resolved fluid flow simulations. In this spirit, we introduce the hybridized D…
We present the first study on the amplification of magnetic fields by the turbulent dynamo in the highly subsonic regime, with Mach numbers ranging from $10^{-3}$ to $0.4$. We find that for the lower Mach numbers the saturation efficiency of the dynamo, $(E_{\mathrm{mag}}/E_{\mathrm{kin}})_{\mathrm{sat}}$, increases as the Mach number decreases. Even in the case when injection of energy is purely through longitudinal forcing modes, $(E_{\mathrm{mag}}/E_{\mathrm{kin}})_{\mathrm{sat}}$ $\gtrsim 10^{-2}$ at a Mach number of $10^{-3}$. We apply our results to magnetic field amplification in the ea…
In this work, direct numerical simulations of the compressible fluid equations in turbulent regimes are performed. The behavior of the flow is either dominated by purely turbulent phenomena or by the generation of sound waves in it. Previous studies suggest that three different types of turbulence may happen at the low Mach number limit in polytropic flows: Nearly incompressible (NI), modally equipartitioned compressible (MEC) and compressible wave (CW). The distinction between these types of turbulence is investigated here applying different kinds of forcing. Scaling of density fluctuations w…
The spatial scaling laws of velocity kinetic energy spectrum for compressible turbulence flow and its density-weighted counterpart have been formulated in terms of wavenumber, dissipation rate and Mach number by using dimensional analysis. We have applied the Barenblatt's incomplete similarity theory to both kinetic and density-weighted energy spectrum and showed that, within the initial subrange, both energy spectrums approach the -5/3 power law of the wavenumber, when the Mach number $M$ tends to be naught, unity and infinity, respectively.
Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) method will still play a vital role in the following several decade in aerospace engineering. Although RANS models are widely used, empiricism and large discrepancies between models reduce the reliability of simulating complex flows. Therefore, in recent years, data-driven turbulence model has aroused widespread concern in fluid mechanics. Based on the experimental/numerical simulation results, this approach aims to modify or construct the turbulence model for specific purposes by machine learning technologies. In this paper, we take the results calculated…
In this work, we study the scale characteristics of the log- and outer-region motions and structures in subsonic and supersonic turbulence. To this end, a series of direct numerical simulations of the compressible turbulent channel flow at medium Reynolds numbers are performed. Based on this database, the streamwise and spanwise length scales of the outer-region motions are investigated by the two-point correlations and the one-dimensional spectra. The energy distribution among the multi-scale structures in the outer region is found to be dominated by the semilocal friction-Reynolds-number eff…
The present paper addresses the development and implementation of the first high-order Flux Reconstruction (FR) solver for high-speed flows within the open-source COOLFluiD (Computational Object-Oriented Libraries for Fluid Dynamics) platform. The resulting solver is fully implicit and able to simulate compressible flow problems governed by either the Euler or the Navier-Stokes equations in two and three dimensions. Furthermore, it can run in parallel on multiple CPU-cores and is designed to handle unstructured grids consisting of both straight and curved edged quadrilateral or hexahedral elem…

We introduce an immersed high-order discontinuous Galerkin method for solving the compressible Navier-Stokes equations on non-boundary-fitted meshes. The flow equations are discretised with a mixed discontinuous Galerkin formulation and are advanced in time with an explicit time marching scheme. The discretisation meshes may contain simplicial (triangular or tetrahedral) elements of different sizes and need not be structured. On the discretisation mesh the fluid domain boundary is represented with an implicit signed distance function. The cut-elements partially covered by the solid domain are …
This work presents the face-centred finite volume (FCFV) paradigm for the simulation of compressible flows. The FCFV method defines the unknowns at the face barycentre and uses a hybridisation procedure to eliminate all the degrees of freedom inside the cells. In addition, Riemann solvers are defined implicitly within the expressions of the numerical fluxes. The resulting methodology provides first-order accurate approximations of the conservative quantities, i.e. density, momentum and energy, as well as of the viscous stress tensor and of the heat flux, without the need of any gradient recons…
