The subsonic, compressible, potential flow around a hypersphere can be derived using the Janzen-Rayleigh expansion (JRE) of the flow potential in even powers of the incident Mach number $\mathcal{M}_\infty$. JREs were carried out with terms polynomial in the inverse radius $r^{-1}$ to high orders in two dimensions (2D), but were limited to order $\mathcal{M}_\infty^4$ in three dimensions (3D). We derive general JRE formulae to arbitrary order, adiabatic index, and dimension. We find that powers of $\ln(r)$ can creep into the expansion, and are essential in 3D beyond order $\mathcal{M}_\infty^4$. Such terms are apparently absent in the 2D disk, as we confirm up to order $\mathcal{M}_\infty^{100}$, although they do show in other dimensions (e.g. at order $\mathcal{M}_\infty^2$ in 4D) and in non-circular 2D bodies. This suggests that the disk, which was extensively used to study basic flow properties, has additional symmetry. Our results are used to improve the hodograph-based approximation for the flow in front of a sphere. The symmetry-axis velocity profiles of axisymmetric flows around different prolate spheroids are approximately related to each other by a simple, Mach-independent scaling.
Rayleigh-Taylor instability in a compressible fluid is reconsidered. The density is allowed to vary with pressure under the barotropy assumption. For the case with equal speeds of sound in the two superposed fluids, in order to give a non-trivial compressibility correction to the Rayleigh-Taylor growth rate, the compressibility correction is calculated to $O(g^2/k^2a^4)$. To this order, compressibility effects are found to reduce the growth rate.
We present results from numerical simulations of Rayleigh-Taylor turbulence, performed using a recently proposed lattice Boltzmann method able to describe consistently a thermal compressible flow subject to an external forcing. The method allowed us to study the system both in the nearly-Boussinesq and strongly compressible regimes. Moreover, we show that when the stratification is important, the presence of the adiabatic gradient causes the arrest of the mixing process.
Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability widely exists in nature and engineering fields. How to better understand the physical mechanism of RT instability is of great theoretical significance and practical value. At present, abundant results of RT instability have been obtained by traditional macroscopic methods. However, research on the thermodynamic non-equilibrium (TNE) effects in the process of system evolution is relatively scarce. In this paper, the discrete Boltzmann method based on non-equilibrium statistical physics is utilized to study the effects of the specific heat ratio on compressible R…
The effects of isothermal stratification strength on vorticity dynamics for single-mode Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) are examined using two dimensional fully compressible wavelet-based direct numerical simulations. The simulations model low Atwood number ($A=0.04$) RTI development for four different stratification strengths, corresponding to Mach numbers from 0.3 (weakly stratified) to 1.2 (strongly stratified), and for three different perturbation Reynolds numbers, from 5,000 to 20,000. All simulations use adaptive wavelet-based mesh refinement to achieve very fine spatial resolutions at…
The linearized Navier-Stokes equations for a system of superposed immiscible compressible ideal fluids are analyzed. The results of the analysis reconcile the stabilizing and destabilizing effects of compressibility reported in the literature. It is shown that the growth rate $n$ obtained for an inviscid, compressible flow in an infinite domain is bounded by the growth rates obtained for the corresponding incompressible flows with uniform and exponentially varying density. As the equilibrium pressure at the interface $p_\infty$ increases (less compressible flow), $n$ increases towards the unif…
Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) occurs at the interface of two media when the heavier fluid is accelerated into the lighter fluid and is a prototypical hydrodynamic event present in many physical events. In high energy physics, this manifests itself across a wide range of length scales from nuclear confinement fusion at micron-scale to supernova explosion at terra scales. RTI can also be viewed as a baroclinic instability prevalent in engineering, geophysics, and astrophysics, a pedagogic description of which is given in Sengupta {\it et al., Comput. Fluids,} {\bf 225}, 104995 (2021) with re…
We develop a novel multiscale model of interface motion for the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) and Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI) for two-dimensional, inviscid, compressible flows with vorticity, which yields a fast-running numerical algorithm that produces both qualitatively and quantitatively similar results to a resolved gas dynamics code, while running approximately two orders of magnitude (in time) faster. Our multiscale model is founded upon a new compressible-incompressible decomposition of the velocity field $u=v+w$. The incompressible component $w$ of the velocity is also irro…
The thermal lattice Boltzmann flux solver (TLBFS) has been proposed to overcome the drawbacks of the thermal lattice Boltzmann models. However, as a weakly compressible model, its mechanism of good numerical stability for high Rayleigh number thermal flows is still unclear. To reveal the mechanism, the present paper firstly derives the macroscopic equations of TLBFS (MEs-TLBFS) with actual numerical dissipation terms by approximating its computational process. By solving MEs-TLBFS with the finite volume method, the reconstructed TLBFS (RTLBFS) is proposed. Detailed analyses prove that these ac…
The Rayleigh-Taylor Instability (RTI) in compressible flow with inter-molecular interactions is probed via the Discrete Boltzmann Method (DBM). The effects of interfacial tension, viscosity and heat conduction are investigated. It is found that the influences of interfacial tension on the perturbation amplitude, bubble velocity, and two kinds of entropy production rates all show differences at different stages of RTI evolution. It inhibits the RTI evolution at the bubble acceleration stage, while at the asymptotic velocity stage, it first promotes and then inhibits the RTI evolution. Viscosity…
We study fully compressible convection in the context of plane-parallel, polytropically stratified atmospheres. We perform a suite of 2D and 3D simulations in which we vary the initial superadiabaticity ($ε$) and the Rayleigh number (Ra) while fixing the initial density stratification, aspect ratio, and Prandtl number. The evolved heat transport, quantified by the Nusselt number (Nu), follows scaling relationships similar to those found in the well-studied, incompressible Rayleigh-Bénard problem. This scaling holds up in both 2D and 3D and is not appreciably affected by the magnitude of $ε$.

Computer simulations of a compressible fluid, convecting heat in two dimensions, suggest that, within a range of Rayleigh numbers, two distinctly different, but stable, time-dependent flow morphologies are possible. The simpler of the flows has two characteristic frequencies: the rotation frequency of the convecting rolls, and the vertical oscillation frequency of the rolls. Observables, such as the heat flux, have a simple-periodic (harmonic) time dependence. The more complex flow has at least one additional characteristic frequency -- the horizontal frequency of the cold, downward- and the w…
(abridged) Context: The ratio of kinematic viscosity to thermal diffusivity, the Prandtl number, is much smaller than unity in stellar convection zones. Aims: To study the statistics of convective flows and energy transport as functions of the Prandtl number. Methods: Three-dimensional numerical simulations convection in Cartesian geometry are used. The convection zone (CZ) is embedded between two stably stratified layers. Statistics and transport properties of up- and downflows are studied separately. Results: The rms velocity increases with decreasing Prandtl number. At the same time the fil…
Rayleigh-Taylor-instability(RTI) induced flow and mixing are of great importance in both nature and engineering scenarios. To capture the underpinning physics, tracers are introduced to make a supplement to discrete Boltzmann simulation of RTI in compressible flows. Via marking two types of tracers with different colors, the tracer distribution provides a clear boundary of two fluids during the RTI evolution. Fine structures of the flow and thermodynamic nonequilibrium behavior around the interface in a miscible two-fluid system are delineated. Distribution of tracers in its velocity phase spa…
Background: The acoustic damping in gas turbines and aero-engines relies to a great extent on acoustic liners that consists of a cavity and a perforated face sheet. The prediction of the impedance of the liners by direct numerical simulations is nowadays not feasible due to the hundreds to thousands repetitions of tiny holes. We introduce a procedure to numerically obtain the Rayleigh conductivity for acoustic liners for viscous gases at rest, and with it define the acoustic impedance of the perforated sheet. Results: The proposed method decouples the effects that are dominant on different sca…
