This paper sums up some recent validations of an immersed boundary method for compressible flow simulations. It has been already shown that this method is able to provide accurate results without meshing effort around more or less complex geometries. Here, the authors focus on several simple test cases to assess the application range of the method. From subsonic to hypersonic flows, from steady to large-eddy unsteady simulations, in 2D or 3D, results are compared to classical simulations with body-fitted meshes and experiment. Moreover, the use of an efficient Navier-Stokes solver for all the cases is part of the benefit of the approach to provide a CFD solution in a reduced time.
An immersed-boundary (IB) method is proposed and applied in the gas-kinetic BGK scheme to simulate incompressible/compressible viscous flow with stationary/moving boundary. In present method the ghost-cell technique is adopted to fulfill the boundary condition on the immersed boundary. A novel idea "local boundary determination" is put forward to identify the ghost cells, each of which may have several different ghost-cell constructions corresponding to different boundary segments, thus eliminating the singularity of the ghost cell. Furthermore, the so-called "fresh-cell" problem when implemen…
In this paper, a novel immersed boundary method is developed, validated, and applied. Through devising a second-order three-step flow reconstruction scheme, the proposed method is able to enforce the Dirichlet, Neumann, Robin, and Cauchy boundary conditions in a straightforward and consistent manner. Equipped with a fluid-solid coupling framework that integrates high-order temporal and spatial discretization schemes, numerical experiments concerning flow involving stationary and moving objects, convex and concave geometries, no-slip and slip wall boundary conditions, as well as subsonic and su…
In the present study, a discrete forcing Immersed Boundary Method (IBM) is proposed for the numerical simulation of high-speed flow problems including heat exchange. The flow field is governed by the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, which are resolved by using the open source library OpenFOAM. The numerical solver is modified to include source terms in the momentum equation and in the energy equation, which account for the presence of the immersed body. The method is validated on some benchmark test cases dealing with forced convection problems and moving immersed bodies. The results obta…
We introduce an immersed high-order discontinuous Galerkin method for solving the compressible Navier-Stokes equations on non-boundary-fitted meshes. The flow equations are discretised with a mixed discontinuous Galerkin formulation and are advanced in time with an explicit time marching scheme. The discretisation meshes may contain simplicial (triangular or tetrahedral) elements of different sizes and need not be structured. On the discretisation mesh the fluid domain boundary is represented with an implicit signed distance function. The cut-elements partially covered by the solid domain are …
A simulation of ellipsoidal particles inside a fluid flow is presented and validated from our own lab size experiments where data has been recorded using a camera set-up and post-processing of the pictures. The model is based on Jeffery's equation, where the orientation and position of the particles are influenced by the surrounding fluid. Additionally, particle-particle interaction and particle-wall interaction are taken into account.
We report development and application of a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) solver for compressible flows with large-scale flow-induced deformation of the structure. The FSI solver utilizes partitioned approach to strongly couple a sharp-interface immersed boundary method based flow solver with an open-source finite-element structure dynamics solver. The flow solver is based on a higher-order finite-difference method on Cartesian grid and employs ghost-cell methodology to impose boundary conditions on the immersed boundary. A higher-order accuracy near the immersed boundary is achieved by com…
In a recent paper, Liu et al. [``Lift and drag in three-dimensional steady viscous and compressible flow'', Phys. Fluids 29, 116105 (2017)] obtained a universal theory for the aerodynamic force on a body in three-dimensional steady flow, effective from incompressible all the way to supersonic regimes. In this theory, the total aerodynamic force can be determined solely with the vorticity distribution on a single wake plane locating in the steady linear far field. Despite the vital importance of this result, its validity and performance in practice has not been investigated yet. In this paper, …
We present an open-source adaptive front-tracking solver for biological capsules in viscous flows. The membrane elastic and bending forces are solved on a Lagrangian triangulation using a linear Finite Element Method and a paraboloid fitting method. The fluid flow is solved on an octree adaptive grid using the open-source platform Basilisk. The Lagrangian and Eulerian grids communicate using an Immersed Boundary Method by means of Peskin-like regularized Dirac delta functions. We demonstrate the accuracy of our solver with extensive validations: in Stokes conditions against the Boundary Integr…
We present an approach for numerically simulating the dynamics of flexible fibers in a three-dimensional shear flow using a scalable immersed boundary (IB) algorithm based on Guermond and Minev's pseudo-compressible fluid solver. The fibers are treated as one-dimensional Kirchhoff rods that resist stretching, bending, and twisting, within the generalized IB framework. We perform a careful numerical comparison against experiments on single fibers performed by S. G. Mason and co-workers, who categorized the fiber dynamics into several distinct orbit classes. We show that the orbit class may be d…
Eddy current flow meters (ECFM) are widely used for measuring the flow velocity of electrically conducting fluids. Since the flow induced perturbations of a magnetic field depend both on the geometry and the conductivity of the fluid, extensive calibration is needed to get accurate results. Transient eddy current flow metering (TECFM) has been developed to overcome this problem. It relies on tracking the position of an impressed eddy current system which is moving with the same velocity as the conductive fluid. We present an immersed version of this measurement technique and demonstrate its vi…
A fully nonlinear potential Numerical Wave Tank (NWT) is developed in two dimensions, using a combination of the Harmonic Polynomial Cell (HPC) method for solving the Laplace problem on the wave potential and the Immersed Boundary Method (IBM) for capturing the free surface motion. This NWT can consider fixed, submerged or wall-sided surface piercing, bodies. To compute the flow around the body and associated pressure field, a novel multi overlapping grid method is implemented. Each grid having its own free surface, a two-way communication is ensured between the problem in the body vicinity an…

The goal of this report is to present the final project conducted in order to fulfill the requirements of the M.Sc. degree at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Ben-Gurion University (BGU) of the Negev. The project comprises theoretical research investigating natural convection compressible flow with high temperature differences and with complex geometries. The research motivation comes from long-term research investigating and simulating the steady state and transient multiphase flow regimes existing in the reactor core, that was established by the Soreq Nuclear Center. We investigate flows interacting with a square and a fractal shape multi-scale structures in the compressible regime for Mach numbers at subsonic and supersonic upstream conditions using large-eddy-simulations (LES). We also aim at identifying similarities and differences that these interactions have with corresponding interactions in the canonical incompressible flow problem. To account for the geometrical complexity associated with the fractal structures, we apply an immersed boundary method to model the no-slip boundary condition at the solid surfaces, with adequate mesh resolution in the v…
One approach to reduce the cost to simulate transitional compressible boundary layer flow is to adopt a near body reduced domain with boundary conditions enforced to be compatible with a computationally cheaper 3D RANS simulation. In such an approach it is desirable to enforce a consistent pressure distribution which is not typically the case when using the standard Riemann inflow boundary condition. We revisit the Riemann problem adopted in many DG based high fidelity formulations. Through analysis of the 1D linearised Euler equations it is demonstrated that maintaining entropy compatibility …
The present study reports the effect of different source terms on the near and far-field acoustic characteristics of compressible flow over a rectangular cavity using hybrid computational aeroacoustics methodology. We use a low dispersive and dissipative compressible fluid flow solver in conjunction with an acoustic perturbation equation solver based on the spectral/hp element method. The hybrid approach involves calculating the base fields and the acoustic sources from a fluid simulation in the first step. In the next step, the acoustic solver utilizes the variables to predict the acoustic pr…
In the present work we compare reliability of several most widely used reduced detailed chemical kinetic schemes for hydrogen-air and hydrogen-oxygen combustible mixtures. The validation of the schemes includes detailed analysis of 0D and 1D calculations and comparison with experimental databases containing data on induction time, equilibrium temperature, composition of the combustion products, laminar flame speed and the flame front thickness at different pressures. 1D calculations are carried out using the full gasdynamical system for compressible viscous thermal conductive multicomponent mi…
A new slow growth formulation for DNS of wall-bounded turbulent flow is developed and demonstrated to enable extension of slow growth modeling concepts to complex boundary layer flows. As in previous slow growth approaches, the formulation assumes scale separation between the fast scales of turbulence and the slow evolution of statistics such as the mean flow. This separation enables the development of approaches where the fast scales of turbulence are directly simulated while the forcing provided by the slow evolution is modeled. The resulting model admits periodic boundary conditions in the …
We present a fully Eulerian hybrid immersed-boundary/phase-field model to simulate wetting and contact line motion over any arbitrary geometry. The solid wall is described with a volume-penalisation ghost-cell immersed boundary whereas the interface between the two fluids by a diffuse-interface method. The contact line motion on the complex wall is prescribed via slip velocity in the momentum equation and static/dynamic contact angle condition for the order parameter of the Cahn-Hilliard model. This combination requires accurate computations of the normal and tangential gradients of the scalar…
Comparisons studies between simulated variable density turbulent flows often consist of direct graphical representations where the level of agreement is determined by eye. This work demonstrates a formal validation methodology using an existing validation framework to examine the agreement between a simulated variable density jet flow and corresponding experimental data. Implicit large eddy simulations (ILES's) of a round jet and a plane jet with density ratio $s = 4.2$ were simulated using the compressible hydrodynamic code xRAGE. The jet growth, characterized by the spreading rates, was comp…
Recently the generation of eddy currents by interacting surface waves was observed experimentally. The phenomenon provides the possibility for manipulation of particles which are immersed in the fluid. The analysis shows that the amplitude of the established eddy currents produced by stationary surface waves does not depend on the fluid viscosity in the free surface case. The currents become parametrically larger being inversely proportional to the square root of the fluid viscosity in the case when the fluid surface is covered by an almost incompressible thin liquid (i.e. shear elasticity is …
An important class of fluid-structure problems involve the dynamics of ordered arrays of immersed, flexible fibers. While specialized numerical methods have been developed to study fluid-fiber systems, they become infeasible when there are many, rather than a few, fibers present, nor do these methods lend themselves to analytical calculation. Here, we introduce a coarse-grained continuum model, based on local-slender body theory, for elastic fibers immersed in a viscous Newtonian fluid. It takes the form of an anisotropic Brinkman equation whose skeletal drag is coupled to elastic forces. This…
This paper introduces open-source computational fluid dynamics software named open computational fluid dynamic code for scientific computation with graphics processing unit (GPU) system (OpenCFD-SCU), developed by the authors for direct numerical simulation (DNS) of compressible wall-bounded turbulence. This software is based on the finite difference method and is accelerated by the use of a GPU, which provides an acceleration by a factor of more than 200 compared with central processing unit (CPU) software based on the same algorithm and number of message passing interface (MPI) processes, an…
We propose a numerical methodology for the numerical simulation of distinct, interacting physical processes described by a combination of compressible, inert and reactive forms of the Euler equations, multiphase equations and elastoplastic equations. These systems of equations are usually solved by coupling finite element and CFD models. Here we solve them simultaneously, by recasting all the equations in the same, hyperbolic form and solving them on the same grid with the same finite-volume numerical schemes. The proposed compressible, multiphase, hydrodynamic formulation can employ a hierarc…
Development of mass-source function based numerical wave tank (NWT) algorithms in the Navier-Stokes (NSE) framework is impeded by multiple design issues such as: (a) optimization of a number of variables characterizing the source region, (b) wave-vorticity interactions and (c) a mandatory requirement of modeling the domain on both sides of the wavemaker. In this paper, we circumvent these hurdles by proposing a volume-preserving inflow-boundary based Navier-Stokes wave tank. Wave generation and propagation is modeled in a two-phase PLIC-VOF set-up. Near-exact volume preservation is achieved (a…
In this study, ensembles of experimental data are presented and utilized to compare and validate two models used in the simulation of variable density, compressible turbulent mixing. Though models of this kind (Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes and Large Eddy Simulations) have been validated extensively with more canonical flows in previous studies, the present approach offers novelty in the complexity of the geometry, the ensemble based validation, and the uniformity of the computational framework on which the models are tested. Moreover, all experimental and computational tasks were completed …
A hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian solver RYrhoCentralFoam is developed based on OpenFOAM to simulate detonative combustion in two-phase gas-liquid mixtures. For Eulerian gas phase, RYrhoCentralFoam enjoys second order of accuracy in time and space discretizations and is based on finite volume method on polyhedral cells. The following developments are made based on the standard compressible flow solver rhoCentralFoam in OpenFOAM: (1) multi-component species transport, (2) detailed fuel chemistry for gas phase combustion, and (3) Lagrangian solver for gas-droplet two-phase flows and sub-models for li…
Whereas direct numerical simulation (DNS) have reached a high level of description in the field of atomization processes, they are not yet able to cope with industrial needs since they lack resolution and are too costly. Predictive simulations relying on reduced order modeling have become mandatory for applications ranging from cryotechnic to aeronautic combustion chamber liquid injection. Two-fluid models provide a good basis in order to conduct such simulations, even if recent advances allow to refine subscale modeling using geometrical variables in order to reach a unified model including s…
The fluid structure interaction of cylinders in tandem arrangement is used as validation basis of a multi-domain Lagrangian-Eulerian hybrid flow solver. In this hybrid combination, separate grids of limited width are defined around every solid body, on which the Eulerian flow equations are solved using finite volume approximations. In order to interconnect the domains defined by the grids, the entire flow is described in Lagrangian coordinates and the corresponding equations are solved via particle approximations in fully coupled mode with the solutions within the Eulerian grids. The flow solv…
