In this paper, we propose a hybrid lattice Boltzmann method (HLBM) for solving fluid-structure interaction problems. The proposed numerical approach is applied to model the flow induced by a vibrating thin lamina submerged in a viscous quiescent fluid. The hydrodynamic force exerted by the fluid on the solid body is described by means of a complex hydrodynamic function, whose real and imaginary parts are determined via parametric analysis. Numerical results are validated by comparison with those from other numerical as well as experimental works available in the literature. The proposed hybrid approach enhances the capability of lattice Boltzmann methods to solve fluid dynamic problems involving moving geometries.
The simulation of geometrically resolved rigid particles in a fluid relies on coupling algorithms to transfer momentum both ways between the particles and the fluid. In this article, the fluid flow is modeled with a parallel Lattice Boltzmann method using adaptive grid refinement to improve numerical efficiency. The coupling with the particles is realized with the momentum exchange method. When implemented in plain form, instabilities may arise in the coupling when the particles are lighter than the fluid. The algorithm can be stabilized with a virtual mass correction specifically developed fo…
The present study proposes a highly accurate lattice Boltzmann direct coupling cell-vertex algorithm, well suited for industrial purposes, making it highly valuable for aeroacoustic applications. It is indeed known that the convection of vortical structures across a grid refinement interface, where cell size is abruptly doubled, is likely to generate spurious noise that may corrupt the solution over the whole computational domain. This issue becomes critical in the case of aeroacoustic simulations, where accurate pressure estimations are of paramount importance. Consequently, any interfering n…

This issue becomes critical in the case of aeroacoustic simulations, where accurate pressure estimations are of paramount importance. The purpose of this article is to identify the issues occurring at the interface and to propose possible solutions yielding significant improvements for aeroacoustic simu…
Lattice Boltzmann Methods for Navier-Stokes Equations in General Orthogonal Coordinates for Efficient Flow Simulations using Nonuniform Clustered Grids
The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is a numerical approach to tackle problems described by a Boltzmann type-equation, where time, space, and velocities are discretized to describe scattering and advection. Even though the LBM executes advection along a lattice direction without numerical error, its usage in the high Knudsen number regime (ballistic) has been hindered by the ray effect problem (for dimensions greater than 1D). This problem has its origin in the low number of available propagation directions on standard LBM lattices. Here, to overcome this limitation, we propose the worm-lattice…
Simulating inhomogeneous flows with different characteristic scales in different coordinate directions using the collide-and-stream based lattice Boltzmann methods (LBM) can be accomplished efficiently using rectangular lattice grids. We develop and investigate a new rectangular central moment LBM based on non-orthogonal moment basis (referred to as RC-LBM). The equilibria to which the central moments relax under collision in this approach are obtained from matching with those corresponding to the continuous Maxwell distribution. A Chapman-Enskog analysis is performed to derive the correction …
We simulate the two-dimensional fluid flow around National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) 0012 airfoil using a hybrid lattice Boltzmann method (HLBM), which combines the standard lattice Boltzmann method with an unstructured finite-volume formulation. The aim of the study is to assess the numerical performances and the robustness of the computational method. To this purpose, after providing a convergence study to estimate the overall accuracy of the method, we analyze the numerical solution for different values of the angle of attack at a Reynolds number equal to $10^3$. Subsequentl…
We propose the application of the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) technique to a compressible lattice Boltzmann model for the simulation of moving boundary problems on unstructured meshes. To that end, the kinetic equations are mapped from a moving physical domain into a fixed computational domain. The resulting equations in the computational domain are then numerically solved using the second-order accurate finite element reconstruction on an unstructured mesh. It is shown that the problem regarding the geometric conservation law (GCL), which needs a special treatment in the ALE Navier-St…
When using atom-centered integration grids, the portion of the grid that belongs to a certain atom also moves when this atom is displaced. In the paper, we investigate the moving-grid effect in the calculation of the harmonic vibrational frequencies when using all-electron full-potential numeric atomic-centered orbitals as the basis set. We find that, unlike the first order derivative (i.e., forces), the moving-grid effect plays an essential role for the second order derivatives (i.e., vibrational frequencies). Further analysis reveals that predominantly diagonal force constant terms are affec…
Interactions between surfaces and proteins occur in many vital processes and are crucial in biotechnology: the ability to control specific interactions is essential in fields like biomaterials, biomedical implants and biosensors. In the latter case, biosensor sensitivity hinges on ligand proteins adsorbing on bioactive surfaces with a favorable orientation, exposing reaction sites to target molecules. Protein adsorption, being a free-energy-driven process, is difficult to study experimentally. This paper develops and evaluates a computational model to study electrostatic interactions of protei…
Direct numerical simulation of liquid-gas-solid flows is uncommon due to the considerable computational cost. As the grid spacing is determined by the smallest involved length scale, large grid sizes become necessary -- in particular if the bubble-particle aspect ratio is on the order of 10 or larger. Hence, it arises the question of both feasibility and reasonability. In this paper, we present a fully parallel, scalable method for direct numerical simulation of bubble-particle interaction at a size ratio of 1-2 orders of magnitude that makes simulations feasible on currently available super-c…
The acoustic waves generated by moving bodies and the movement of bodies by acoustic waves are central phenomena in the operation of musical instruments and in everyday's experiences like the movement of a boat on a lake by the wake generated by a propelled ship. Previous works have successfully simulated the interaction between a moving body and a lattice-Boltzmann fluid by immersed boundary methods. Hereby, we show how to implement the same coupling in the case of a Lattice-Boltzmann for waves, i.e. a LBGK model that directly recovers the wave equation in a linear medium, without modeling fl…
Contact angle is an essential physical quantity that characterizes the wettability of a substrate. Although it is widely used in the studies of surface wetting, capillary phenomena and moving contact lines, measuring contact angles in experiments and simulations is still complicated and time-consuming. In this paper, we present an efficient scheme for the real-time and on-the-spot measurement of contact angles on curved wetting surfaces in lattice Boltzmann simulations. The measuring results are in excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions by the spherical cap method without conside…
This work thoroughly investigates a semi-Lagrangian lattice Boltzmann (SLLBM) solver for compressible flows. In contrast to other LBM for compressible flows, the vertices are organized in cells, and interpolation polynomials up to fourth order are used to attain the off-vertex distribution function values. Differing from the recently introduced Particles on Demand (PoD) method, the method operates in a static, non-moving reference frame. Yet the SLLBM in the present formulation grants supersonic flows and exhibits a high degree of Galilean invariance. The SLLBM solver allows for an independent…
Convergence acceleration of flow simulations to their steady states at lower Mach numbers can be achieved via preconditioning the lattice Boltzmann (LB) schemes that alleviate the associated numerical stiffness, which have so far been constructed on square lattices. We present a new central moment LB method on rectangular lattice grids for efficient computations of inhomogeneous and anisotropic flows by solving the preconditioned Navier-Stokes (PNS) equations. Moment equilibria corrections are derived via a Chapman-Enskog analysis for eliminating the truncation errors due to grid-anisotropy ar…
We present a new 3D lattice Boltzmann (LB) algorithm based on central moments for the D3Q27 lattice using a cuboid grid, which is parameterized by two grid aspect ratios that are related to the ratios of the particle speeds with respect to that along a reference coordinate direction. The use of the cuboid lattice grid enables the method to compute flows having different characteristic length scales in different directions more efficiently. It is constructed to simulate the Navier-Stokes equations consistently via introducing counteracting corrections to the second order moment equilibria obtai…
An algorithm is proposed to implement unsteady jump boundary conditions, presenting discontinuity in physical quantities, within the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). This is useful to tackle problems involving mass or heat transfer through interfaces or membranes that exhibit resistance to transport. The algorithm is simple to implement within an existing LBM based code that computes diffusion and advection of a scalar field, either temperature or solute concentration. Analytical solutions are recovered numerically with acceptable accuracy for the limiting case of a planar membrane. The algorit…
The LBM is combined with the Volume Penalization (VP LBM) approach to simulate flows in the presence of obstacles. The single relaxation time LBM and the multiple relaxation time LBM are used. For cases where the fluid motion is enhanced by moving boundaries, the comparison of our results with analytical results is satisfactory. The flow around a cylinder at a relatively high Reynolds number is also calculated. For that case, the VP LBM method was parallelized. A comparison of our results with those found in the literature, demonstrates the reliability of the VP LBM to treat complex flows.
Current Voronoi based moving mesh hydro codes suffer from "grid noise". We identify the cause of this noise as the volume inconsistency error, where the volume that is transferred between cells is inconsistent with the hydrodynamical calculations. As a result, the codes do not achieve second order convergence. In this paper we describe how a simple fix allows Voronoi based moving mesh codes to attain second order convergence. The fix is based on the understanding that the volume exchanged between cells should be consistent with the hydrodynamical calculations. We benchmark our fix with three t…
We develop a conservative phase-space grid-adaptivity strategy for the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation in a planar geometry. The velocity-space grid is normalized to the thermal speed and shifted by the bulk-fluid velocity. The configuration-space grid is moved according to a mesh-motion-partial-differential equation (MMPDE), which equidistributes a monitor function that is inversely proportional to the gradient-length scales of the macroscopic plasma quantities. The grid adaptation ensures discrete conservation of the collisional invariants (mass, momentum, and energy). The conservative grid-ad…
A new finite volume (FV) discretisation method for the Lattice Boltzmann (LB) equation which combines high accuracy with limited computational cost is presented. In order to assess the performance of the FV method we carry out a systematic comparison, focused on accuracy and computational performances, with the standard $streaming$ (ST) Lattice Boltzmann equation algorithm. To our knowledge such a systematic comparison has never been previously reported. In particular we aim at clarifying whether and in which conditions the proposed algorithm, and more generally any FV algorithm, can be taken …
We analyse a linear lattice Boltzmann (LB) formulation for simulation of linear acoustic wave propagation in heterogeneous media. We employ the single-relaxation-time Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) as well as the general multi-relaxation-time (MRT) collision operators. By calculating the dispersion relation for various 2D lattices, we show that the D2Q5 lattice is the most suitable model for the linear acoustic problem. We also implement a grid-refinement algorithm for the LB scheme to simulate waves propagating in a heterogeneous medium with velocity contrasts. Our results show that the LB schem…
We assess the performance of the hybrid Open Accelerator (OpenACC) and Message Passing Interface (MPI) approach for multi-graphics processing units (GPUs) accelerated thermal lattice Boltzmann (LB) simulation. The OpenACC accelerates computation on a single GPU, and the MPI synchronizes the information between multiple GPUs. With a single GPU, the two-dimension (2D) simulation achieved 1.93 billion lattice updates per second (GLUPS) with a grid number of $8193^{2}$, and the three-dimension (3D) simulation achieved 1.04 GLUPS with a grid number of $385^{3}$, which is more than 76% of the theore…
The squirmer is a simple yet instructive model for microswimmers, which employs an effective slip velocity on the surface of a spherical swimmer to describe its self-propulsion. We solve the hydrodynamic flow problem with the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method, which is well-suited for time-dependent problems involving complex boundary conditions. Incorporating the squirmer into LB is relatively straight-forward, but requires an unexpectedly fine grid resolution to capture the physical flow fields and behaviors accurately. We demonstrate this using four basic hydrodynamic tests: Two for the far-fie…

An elegant and uniform relaxation-rate formula is presented for the entropic lattice Boltzmann method (ELBM). The formula not only guarantees the discrete time H-theorem at numerical level but also gives full consideration to the consistency with hydrodynamics. With this novel formula, the computational cost of the ELBM is significantly reduced and the method now can be efficiently used for a broad range of hydrodynamics applications including high Renolds number flows. Moreover, we demonstrate that the grid points where flow fields change drastically are effectively marked by the formula.
The Plateau-Rayleigh instability causes the fragmentation of a liquid ligament into smaller droplets. In this study a numerical study of this phenomenon based on a single relaxation time (SRT) pseudo-potential lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is proposed. If systematically analysed, this test case allows to design appropriate parameters sets to deal with engineering applications involving the hydrodynamics of a jet. Grid convergence simulations are performed in the limit where the interface thickness is asymptotically smaller than the characteristic size of the ligament. These simulations show a…
Slow flows of a slightly rarefied gas under high thermal stresses are considered. The correct fluid-dynamic description of this class of flows is based on the Kogan--Galkin--Friedlander equations, containing some non-Navier--Stokes terms in the momentum equation. Appropriate boundary conditions are determined from the asymptotic analysis of the Knudsen layer on the basis of the Boltzmann equation. Boundary conditions up to the second order of the Knudsen number are studied. Some two-dimensional examples are examined for their comparative analysis. The fluid-dynamic results are supported by num…
In the present article we describe a few simple and efficient finite volume type schemes on moving grids in one spatial dimension combined with appropriate predictor-corrector method to achieve higher resolution. The underlying finite volume scheme is conservative and it is accurate up to the second order in space. The main novelty consists in the motion of the grid. This new dynamic aspect can be used to resolve better the areas with large solution gradients or any other special features. No interpolation procedure is employed, thus unnecessary solution smearing is avoided, and therefore, our…
We propose a new way to implement Dirichlet boundary conditions for complex shapes using data from a single node only, in the context of the lattice Boltzmann method. The resulting novel method exhibits second-order convergence for the velocity field and shows similar or better accuracy than the well established Bouzidi, Firdaouss, and Lallemand (2001) boundary condition for curved walls, despite its local nature. The method also proves to be suitable to simulate moving rigid objects or immersed surfaces either with or without prescribed motion. The core idea of the new approach is to generali…
The Lattice Boltzmann Method algorithm is simplified by assuming constant numerical viscosity (the relaxation time is fixed at $τ=1$). This leads to the removal of the distribution function from the computer memory. To test the solver the Poiseuille and Driven Cavity flows are simulated and analyzed. The error of the solution decreases with the grid size L as $L^{-2}$. Compared to the standard algorithm, the presented formulation is simpler and shorter in implementation. It is less error-prone and needs significantly less working memory in low Reynolds number flows. Our tests showed that the a…

Its power and potential of resolving more and more challenging physical problems have been and are being demonstrated in science and engineering covering a wide range of disciplines such as physics, chemistry, biology, material science and image analysis. The method is a highly simplified model for fluid flows using a few limited fictitious particles that move one grid at a constant time interval an…
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a hugely important subject with applications in almost every engineering field, however, fluid simulations are extremely computationally and memory demanding. Towards this end, we present Lat-Net, a method for compressing both the computation time and memory usage of Lattice Boltzmann flow simulations using deep neural networks. Lat-Net employs convolutional autoencoders and residual connections in a fully differentiable scheme to compress the state size of a simulation and learn the dynamics on this compressed form. The result is a computationally and mem…
Contact angle is an essential characteristic in wetting, capillarity and moving contact line; however, although contact angle phenomena are effectively simulated, an accurate and real-time measurement for contact angle has not been well studied in computational fluid dynamics, especially in dynamic environments. Here, we design a geometry-based mesoscopic scheme to onthesport measure the contact angle in the lattice Boltzmann method. The computational results without gravity effect are in excellent agreement with the benchmarks from the spherical cap method. The qualities of the scheme are fur…
