We present a new method in order to get variable slip coefficient in binary lattice Boltzmann models to simulate gaseous flows. Boundary layer theory is presented. We study both the single- and multi-fluid BGK-type models as well. The boundary slip and the Knudsen layer are analyzed in detail. Benchmark simulations are carried out in order to compare the analytical derivation with the numerical results. Excellent agreement is found between the two situations.
Lattice Boltzmann Method(LBM) has achieved considerable success on simulating complex flows. However, how to impose correct boundary conditions on the fluid-solid interface with complex geometries is still an open question. Here we proposed a velocity interpolation based bounce-back scheme where the ideas of interpolated bounce-back and non-equilibrium extrapolation are combined. The proposed scheme is validated by several well-defined benchmark cases. It is shown that the proposed scheme offers a better accuracy at high Reynolds number and less dependency on solids positions which may crucial…
Various experiments have found a boundary slip in hydrophobic microchannel flows, but a consistent understanding of the results is still lacking. While Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations cannot reach the low shear rates and large system sizes of the experiments, it is often impossible to resolve the needed details with macroscopic approaches. We model the interaction between hydrophobic channel walls and a fluid by means of a multi-phase lattice Boltzmann model. Our mesoscopic approach overcomes the limitations of MD simulations and can reach the small flow velocities of known experiments. We…
In the first part of this study, we compared the performances of two categories of no-slip boundary treatments, i.e., the interpolated bounce-back schemes and the immersed boundary methods in a series of laminar flow simulations within the lattice Boltzmann method. In this second part, these boundary treatments are further compared in the simulations of turbulent flows with complex geometry to provide a next-level assessment of these schemes. Two non-trivial turbulent flow problems, a fully developed turbulent pipe flow at a low Reynolds number, and a decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulent f…
The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has shown its promising capability in simulating microscale gas flows. However, the suitable boundary condition is still one of the critical issues for the LBM to model microgaseous flows involving curved geometries. In this paper, a local boundary condition of the LBM is proposed to treat curved solid walls of microgaseous flows. The developed boundary treatment combines the Maxwellian diffuse reflection scheme and a single-node boundary scheme which contains a free parameter as well as the distance ratio. The curved boundary condition is analyzed within the…
The interpolated bounce-back scheme and the immersed boundary method are the two most popular algorithms in treating a no-slip boundary on curved surfaces in the lattice Boltzmann method. While those algorithms are frequently implemented in the numerical simulations involving complex geometries, such as particle-laden flows, their performances are seldom compared systematically over the same local quantities within the same context. In this paper, we present a systematic comparative investigation on some frequently used and most state-of-the-art interpolated bounce-back schemes and immersed bo…
On-site boundary conditions are often desired for lattice Boltzmann simulations of fluid flow in complex geometries such as porous media or microfluidic devices. The possibility to specify the exact position of the boundary, independent of other simulation parameters, simplifies the analysis of the system. For practical applications it should allow to freely specify the direction of the flux, and it should be straight forward to implement in three dimensions. Furthermore, especially for parallelized solvers it is of great advantage if the boundary condition can be applied locally, involving on…
We apply lattice Boltzmann methods to study the relaxation of the velocity profile in binary fluids under shear during spinodal decomposition. In simple fluids, when a shear flow is applied on the boundaries of the system, the time required to obtain a triangular profile is inversely proportional to the viscosity and proportional to the square of the size of the system. We find that the same behaviour also occurs for binary mixtures, for any component ratio in the mixture and independently from the time when shear flow is switched on during phase separation.
We show that, when a single relaxation time lattice Boltzmann algorithm is used to solve the hydrodynamic equations of a binary fluid for which the two components have different viscosities, strong spurious velocities in the steady state lead to incorrect results for the equilibrium contact angle. We identify the origins of these spurious currents, and demonstrate how the results can be greatly improved by using a lattice Boltzmann method based on a multiple-relaxation-time algorithm. By considering capillary filling we describe the dependence of the advancing contact angle on the interface ve…
In this paper, we perform a more general analysis on the discrete effects of some boundary schemes of the popular one- to three-dimensional DnQq multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model for convection-diffusion equation (CDE). Investigated boundary schemes include anti-bounce-back(ABB) boundary scheme, bounce-back(BB) boundary scheme and non-equilibrium extrapolation(NEE) boundary scheme. In the analysis, we adopt a transform matrix $\textbf{M}$ constructed by natural moments in the evolution equation, and the result of ABB boundary scheme is consistent with the existing work of orthog…
In the CLB method, a Bosanquet-type effective viscosity is employed to account for the rarefaction effect on the gas viscosity. To gain accurate simulations and to match the Bosanquet-type effective viscosity, the combined bounce-back/specular-reflection boundary scheme with a modified second-order slip boundary condition is adopted in the CLB method. The present method is applied to study gas flow in a microchannel with periodic boundary condition and gas flow in a long microchannel (the ratio of the length to the height L/H=100) with pressure boundary condition over a wide range of Knudsen n…
Gas separation of a binary gaseous mixture is one of characteristic phenomena in the micro-scale flows that differ from the conventional size flows. In this work, the separation in a binary gas mixture flows through a microchannel is investigated by the lattice Boltzmann method with a diffuse-bounce-back (DBB) boundary condition. The separation degree and rate are measured in the He--Ar and Ne--Ar systems for different mole fractions, pressure ratios, and Knudsen numbers. The results show that the separation phenomenon in the He--Ar mixture is more obvious than that in the Ne--Ar mixture at th…
In this paper, based on the previous work [B. Shi, Z. Guo, Lattice Boltzmann model for nonlinear convection-diffusion equations, Phys. Rev. E 79 (2009) 016701], we develop a general multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann model for nonlinear anisotropic convection-diffusion equation (NACDE), and show that the NACDE can be recovered correctly from the present model through the Chapman-Enskog analysis. We then test the MRT model through some classic CDEs, and find that the numerical results are in good agreement with analytical solutions or some available results. Besides, the numerical…
In this study, we propose an alternative way to simulate particle suspensions using the lattice Boltzmann method. The main idea is to impose the non-slip boundary condition in the lattice sites located on the particle boundaries. The focus on the lattice sites, instead of the links between them, as done in the more used methods, represents a great simplification in the algorithm. A fully description of the method will be presented, in addition to simulations comparing the proposed method with other methods and, also, with experimental results.
In this paper, a lattice Boltzmann equation (LBE) model is proposed for binary fluids based on a quasi-incompressible phase-field model [J. Shen et al, Comm. Comp. Phys. 13, 1045 (2013)]. Compared with the other incompressible LBE models based on the incompressible phase-field theory, the quasi-incompressible model conserves mass locally. A series of numerical simulations are performed to validate the proposed model, and comparisons with an incompressible LBE model [H. Liang et al, Phys. Rev. E 89, 053320 (2014)] are also carried out. It is shown that the proposed model can track the interface…
In this paper, we give a more pellucid derivation for the cascaded lattice Boltzmann method (CLBM) based on a general multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) frame through defining a shift matrix. When the shift matrix is a unit matrix, the CLBM degrades into an MRT LBM. Based on this, a consistent forcing scheme is developed for the CLBM. The applicability of the non-slip rule, the second-order convergence rate in space and the property of isotropy for the consistent forcing scheme is demonstrated through the simulation of several canonical problems. Several other existing force schemes previously use…
We report results of lattice Boltzmann simulations of a high-speed drainage of liquid films squeezed between a smooth sphere and a randomly rough plane. A significant decrease in the hydrodynamic resistance force as compared with that predicted for two smooth surfaces is observed. However, this force reduction does not represent slippage. The computed force is exactly the same as that between equivalent smooth surfaces obeying no-slip boundary conditions, but located at an intermediate position between peaks and valleys of asperities. The shift in hydrodynamic thickness is shown to depend on t…
We investigate the dynamics of capillary filling using two lattice Boltzmann schemes: a liquid-gas model and a binary model. The simulation results are compared to the well-known Washburn's law, which predicts that the filled length of the capillary scales with time as $l \propto t^{1/2}$. We find that the liquid-gas model does not reproduce Washburn's law due to condensation of the gas phase at the interface, which causes the asymptotic behaviour of the capillary penetration to be faster than $t^{1/2}. The binary model, on the other hand, captures the correct scaling behaviour when the viscos…
We report a hybrid numerical method for the solution of the model H fluctuating hydrodynamic equations for binary mixtures. The momentum conservation equations with Landau-Lifshitz stresses are solved using the fluctuating lattice Boltzmann equation while the order parameter conservation equation with Langevin fluxes are solved using the stochastic method of lines. Two methods, based on finite difference and finite volume, are proposed for spatial discretisation of the order parameter equation. Special care is taken to ensure that the fluctuation-dissipation theorem is maintained at the lattic…
The immersed boundary lattice Boltzmann method (IB-LBM) has been widely used in the simulation of fluid-solid interaction and particulate flow problems, since proposed in 2004. However, it is usually a non-trivial task to retain the flexibility and the accuracy simultaneously in the implementation of this approach. Based on the intrinsic nature of the LBM, we propose a simple and second-order accurate IB-LBM in this paper, where the no-slip boundary condition on the fluid-solid interface is directly imposed by iteratively correcting the distribution function near the boundary, markedly similar…
We propose a novel approach to the numerical simulation of thin film flows, based on the lattice Boltzmann method. We outline the basic features of the method, show in which limits the expected thin film equations are recovered and perform validation tests. The numerical scheme is applied to the viscous Rayleigh-Taylor instability of a thin film and to the spreading of a sessile drop towards its equilibrium contact angle configuration. We show that the Cox-Voinov law is satisfied, and that the effect of a tunable slip length on the substrate is correctly captured. We address, then, the problem…
Boltzmann equation requires some alternative simpler kinetic model like BGK to replace the collision term. Such a kinetic model which replaces the Boltzmann collision integral should preserve the basic properties and characteristics of the Boltzmann equation and comply with the requirements of non equilibrium thermodynamics. Most of the research in development of kinetic theory based methods have focused more on entropy conditions, stability and ignored the crucial aspect of non equilibrium thermodynamics. The paper presents a new kinetic model formulated based on the principles of non equilib…
The squirmer is a simple yet instructive model for microswimmers, which employs an effective slip velocity on the surface of a spherical swimmer to describe its self-propulsion. We solve the hydrodynamic flow problem with the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method, which is well-suited for time-dependent problems involving complex boundary conditions. Incorporating the squirmer into LB is relatively straight-forward, but requires an unexpectedly fine grid resolution to capture the physical flow fields and behaviors accurately. We demonstrate this using four basic hydrodynamic tests: Two for the far-fie…
The discrete effect on the boundary condition has been a fundamental topic for the lattice Boltzmann method in simulating heat and mass transfer problems. In previous works based on the halfway anti-bounce-back (ABB) boundary condition for convection-diffusion equations (CDEs), it is reported that the discrete effect cannot be commonly removed in the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) model except for a special value of relaxation time. Targeting this point in the present paper, we still proceed within the framework of BGK model for two-dimensional CDEs, and analyze the discrete effect on a non-halfw…
A unified framework to derive discrete time-marching schemes for coupling of immersed solid and elastic objects to the lattice Boltzmann method is presented. Based on operator splitting for the discrete Boltzmann equation, second-order time-accurate schemes for the immersed boundary method, viscous force coupling and external boundary force are derived. Furthermore, a modified formulation of the external boundary force is introduced that leads to a more accurate no-slip boundary condition. The derivation also reveals that the coupling methods can be cast into a unified form, and that the immer…
An artificial neural network is used to evaluate the effectiveness of six metrics and their combinations to assess whether slip transfers across grain boundaries in coarse-grained oligocrystalline Al foils \citep{Bieler_etal2019_2,Alizadeh_etal2020}. This approach extends the one- or two-dimensional projections formerly applied to analyze slip transfer. The accuracy of this binary classification reaches around \pcnt{87} for the best single metric and around \pcnt{90} when considering two or more metrics simultaneously. The results suggest slip transfer mostly depends on the geometric relations…
In dilute gas kinetic theory, model collision dynamics such as Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) model is often used to get a better insight and numerical modelling. BGK model and its variants assume that highly nonlinear collision term can be replaced by a simple relaxation dynamics towards Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. Lebowitz et al., proposed an alternative framework for the collision model, known as Fokker-Planck model, where the relaxation of an arbitrary distribution towards Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution is modelled as a drift-diffusion process in velocity space. In the present manuscript,…
In this paper, the pinning and depinning mechanism of the contact line during droplet evaporation on chemically stripe-patterned surfaces is numerically investigated using a thermal multiphase lattice Boltzmann (LB) model with liquid-vapor phase change. A local force balance in the context of diffuse interfaces is introduced to explain the equilibrium states of droplets on chemically patterned surfaces. It is shown that, when the contact line is pinned on a hydrophobic-hydrophilic boundary, different contact angles can be interpreted as the variation of the length of the contact line occupied …
We present a novel method for fluid structure interaction (FSI) simulations where an original 2nd-order curved space lattice Boltzmann fluid solver (LBM) is coupled to a finite element method (FEM) for thin shells. The LBM can work independently on a standard lattice in curved coordinates without the need for interpolation, re-meshing or an immersed boundary. The LBM distribution functions are transformed dynamically under coordinate change. In addition, force and momentum can be calculated on the nodes exactly in any geometry. Furthermore, the FEM shell is a complete numerical tool with imple…
In the recent years the lattice Boltzmann (LB) methodology has been fruitfully extended to include the effects of thermal fluctuations. So far, all studied cases pertain equilibrium fluctuations, i.e. fluctuations with respect to an equilibrium background state. In this paper we take a step further and present results of fluctuating LB simulations of a binary mixture confined between two parallel walls in presence of a constant concentration gradient in the wall-to-wall direction. This is a paradigmatic set-up for the study of non-equilibrium (NE) fluctuations, i.e. fluctuations with respect t…
It is well known that there are two integral steps of streaming and collision in the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). This concept has been changed by the author's recently proposed macroscopic lattice Boltzmann method (MacLAB) to solve the Navier-Stokes equations for fluid flows. The MacLAB contains streaming step only and relies on one fundamental parameter of lattice size dx, which leads to a revolutionary and precise minimal "Lattice" Boltzmann method, where physical variables such as velocity and density can be retained as boundary conditions with less required storage for more accurate an…
The implementation of boundary conditions is among the most challenging parts of modeling fluid flow through channels and complex media. Here, we show that the existing methods to deal with liquid-wall interactions using multicomponent Lattice Boltzmann are accurate when the wall is aligned with the main axes of the lattice but fail otherwise. To solve this problem, we extend a strategy previously developed for multiphase models. As an example, we study the coalescence of two droplets on a curved surface in two dimensions. The strategy proposed here is of special relevance for binary flows in …
We develop and implement a novel lattice Boltzmann scheme to study multicomponent flows on curved surfaces, coupling the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations with the Cahn-Hilliard equation to track the evolution of the binary fluid interfaces. Standard lattice Boltzmann method relies on regular Cartesian grids, which makes it generally unsuitable to study flow problems on curved surfaces. To alleviate this limitation, we use a vielbein formalism to write down the Boltzmann equation on an arbitrary geometry, and solve the evolution of the fluid distribution functions using a finite differenc…
