The implementation of the kinetic diffuse boundary condition with the characteristic streaming-collision mechanism is studied for the high-order lattice Boltzmann (LB) models. The obtained formulation is also tested and validated numerically for three high-order LB models for both isothermal and thermal Couette flows. The streaming-collision mechanism ensures that high-order LB models can retain particle feature while go beyond the Navier-Stokes hydrodynamics.
A new finite volume (FV) discretisation method for the Lattice Boltzmann (LB) equation which combines high accuracy with limited computational cost is presented. In order to assess the performance of the FV method we carry out a systematic comparison, focused on accuracy and computational performances, with the standard $streaming$ (ST) Lattice Boltzmann equation algorithm. To our knowledge such a systematic comparison has never been previously reported. In particular we aim at clarifying whether and in which conditions the proposed algorithm, and more generally any FV algorithm, can be taken …
We explore the Carlemann linearization of the collision term of the lattice Boltzmann formulation, as a first step towards formulating a quantum lattice Boltzmann algorithm. Specifically, we deal with the case of a single, incompressible fluid with the Bhatnagar Gross and Krook equilibrium function. Under this assumption, the error in the velocities is proportional to the square of the Mach number. Then, we showcase the Carlemann linearization technique for the system under study. We compute an upper bound to the number of variables as a function of the order of the Carlemann linearization. We…
We propose an extension to recently developed Relativistic Lattice Boltzmann solvers (RLBM), which allows the simulation of flows close to the free streaming limit. Following previous works [Phys. Rev. C 98 (2018) 035201], we use product quadrature rules and select weights and nodes by separately discretising the radial and the angular components. This procedure facilitates the development of quadrature-based RLBM with increased isotropy levels, thus improving the accuracy of the method for the simulation of flows beyond the hydrodynamic regime. In order to quantify the improvement of this dis…
We revisit force evaluation methodologies on rigid solid particles suspended in a viscous fluid and simulated via lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). We point out the non-commutativity of streaming and collision operators in the force evaluation procedure and provide a theoretical explanation for this observation. Based on this analysis, we propose a discrete force calculation scheme with enhanced accuracy. The proposed scheme is essentially a lattice version of the Reynolds Transport Theorem (RTT) in the context of the lattice Boltzmann formulation. Besides maintaining satisfactory levels of reli…
In this work, we show that the widely used bounce-back boundary condition is an incomplete form of the diffuse reflection boundary condition at the continuum limit for lattice Boltzmann simulations. By utilizing this fact, we can force the diffuse reflection scheme to work at its continuum limit so that the no-slip boundary condition can be implemented without any non-physical slip velocity error being induced by the standard bounce-back scheme. The revised boundary formulation is validated numerically by solving a pressure-driven channel flow, a lid-driven cavity flow and channel flow around …
In contrast to the commonly used lattice Boltzmann method, off-lattice Boltzmann methods decouple the velocity discretization from the underlying spatial grid, thus allowing for more efficient geometric representations of complex boundaries. The current work combines characteristic-based integration of the streaming step with the free-energy based multiphase model by Lee et. al. [Journal of Computational Physics, 206 (1), 2005 ]. This allows for simulation time steps more than an order of magnitude larger than the relaxation time. Unlike previous work by Wardle et. al. [Computers and Mathemati…
We present a systematic procedure for the construction of relativistic lattice Boltzmann models (R-SLB) appropriate for the simulation of flows of massless particles. Quadrature rules are used for the discretization of the momentum space in spherical coordinates. The models are optimized for one-dimensional flows. The applications considered in this paper are the Sod shock tube and the one-dimensional boost invariant expansion (Bjorken flow). Our models are tested against exact solutions in the inviscid and ballistic limits. At intermediate relaxation times (finite viscosity), we compare with …
In the frame of the Boltzmann equation, wall-bounded flows of rarefied gases require the implementation of boundary conditions at the kinetic level. Such boundary conditions induce a discontinuity in the distribution function with respect to the component of the momentum which is normal to the boundary. Expanding the distribution function with respect to half-range polynomials allows this discontinuity to be captured. The implementation of this concept has been reported in the literature only for force-free flows. In the case of general forces which can have non-zero components in the directio…
The spurious currents observed in multiphase flow simulations with pseudo-potential lattice Boltzmann (LB) models are usually understood to be the result of the lack of isotropy of the model-generated interaction force between phases. Remedies have been proposed to utilize larger stencils to compute the interaction force with higher orders of isotropy. In this short communication, we point out the incompleteness in the current understanding and propose a new consistent implementation to more effectively suppress the spurious currents. We also demonstrate theoretically that certain low-level sp…
An improved wetting boundary implementation strategy is proposed based on lattice Boltzmann color-gradient model in this paper. In this strategy, an extra interface force condition is demonstrated based on the diffuse interface assumption and is employed in contact line region. It has been validated by three benchmark problems: static droplet wetting on a flat surface and a curved surface, and dynamic capillary filling. Good performances are shown in all three cases. Relied on the strict validation to our scheme, the viscous fingering phenomenon of immiscible fluids displacement in a two-dimen…
In this paper, we consider the Boltzmann equation with respect to orthonormal vielbein fields in conservative form. This formalism allows the use of arbitrary coordinate systems to describe the space geometry, as well as of an adapted coordinate system in the momentum space, which is linked to the physical space through the use of vielbeins. Taking advantage of the conservative form, we derive the macroscopic equations in a covariant tensor notation, and show that the hydrodynamic limit can be obtained via the Chapman-Enskog expansion in the Bhatnaghar-Gross-Krook (BGK) approximation for the c…
Over the last two decades, lattice Boltzmann methods have become an increasingly popular tool to compute the flow in complex geometries such as porous media. In addition to single phase simulations allowing, for example, a precise quantification of the permeability of a porous sample, a number of extensions to the lattice Boltzmann method are available which allow to study multiphase and multicomponent flows on a pore scale level. In this article we give an extensive overview on a number of these diffuse interface models and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, we shortly r…
The deformation and dynamics of a single droplet in isotropic turbulence is studied using a Lattice Boltzmann diffuse interface model involving exact boundary flow conditions to allow for the creation of an external turbulent flow. We focus on a small, sub-Kolmogorov droplet, whose scale is much smaller than the Kolmogorov length scale of the turbulent flow. The external flow field is obtained via pseudo-spectral simulation data describing the trajectory of a passive tracer in isotropic turbulence. In this way we combine the microscopic scale of the droplet and the macroscopic scale of the tur…

Gas separation of a binary gaseous mixture is one of characteristic phenomena in the micro-scale flows that differ from the conventional size flows. In this work, the separation in a binary gas mixture flows through a microchannel is investigated by the lattice Boltzmann method with a diffuse-bounce-back (DBB) boundary condition. The separation degree and rate are measured in the He--Ar and Ne--Ar systems for different mole fractions, pressure ratios, and Knudsen numbers. The results show that the separation phenomenon in the He--Ar mixture is more obvious than that in the Ne--Ar mixture at th…
In the first part of this study, we compared the performances of two categories of no-slip boundary treatments, i.e., the interpolated bounce-back schemes and the immersed boundary methods in a series of laminar flow simulations within the lattice Boltzmann method. In this second part, these boundary treatments are further compared in the simulations of turbulent flows with complex geometry to provide a next-level assessment of these schemes. Two non-trivial turbulent flow problems, a fully developed turbulent pipe flow at a low Reynolds number, and a decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulent f…
This study compares the free-surface lattice Boltzmann method (FSLBM) with the conservative Allen-Cahn phase-field lattice Boltzmann method (PFLBM) in their ability to model two-phase flows in which the behavior of the system is dominated by the heavy phase. Both models are introduced and their individual properties, strengths and weaknesses are thoroughly discussed. Six numerical benchmark cases were simulated with both models, including (i) a standing gravity and (ii) capillary wave, (iii) an unconfined rising gas bubble in liquid, (iv) a Taylor bubble in a cylindrical tube, and (v) the vert…
In this paper, the pinning and depinning mechanism of the contact line during droplet evaporation on chemically stripe-patterned surfaces is numerically investigated using a thermal multiphase lattice Boltzmann (LB) model with liquid-vapor phase change. A local force balance in the context of diffuse interfaces is introduced to explain the equilibrium states of droplets on chemically patterned surfaces. It is shown that, when the contact line is pinned on a hydrophobic-hydrophilic boundary, different contact angles can be interpreted as the variation of the length of the contact line occupied …
