We present a novel lattice Boltzmann method that has a capability of simulating thermodynamic multiphase flows. This approach is fully thermodynamically consistent at the macroscopic level. Using this new method, a liquid-vapor boiling process, including liquid-vapor formation and coalescence together with a full coupling of temperature, is simulated for the first time.
We develop a mesoscopic lattice Boltzmann model for liquid-vapor phase transition by handling the microscopic molecular interaction. The short-range molecular interaction is incorporated by recovering an equation of state for dense gases, and the long-range molecular interaction is mimicked by introducing a pairwise interaction force. Double distribution functions are employed, with the density distribution function for the mass and momentum conservation laws and an innovative total kinetic energy distribution function for the energy conservation law. The recovered mesomacroscopic governing eq…
Saturated vapor condensation on the homogeneous and heterogeneous sub-cooled wall under gravity was numerically simulated by the improved pseudo-potential phase-change multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann (LB) method. Firstly, the phase-change LB method coupling finite different method to solve the energy equation was verified by the D-2 law of the droplets evaporation, which improve the model could precisely realize the numerical simulation of phase change.
We study an instability of thin liquid-vapor layers bounded by rigid parallel walls from both below and above. In this system, the interfacial instability is induced by lateral vapor pressure fluctuation, which is in turn attributed to the effect of phase change: evaporation occurs at a hotter portion of the interface and condensation at a colder one. The high vapor pressure pushes the interface downward and the low one pulls it upward. A set of equations describing the temporal evolution of the interface of the liquid-vapor layers is derived. This model neglects the effect of mass loss or gai…
We present and evaluate a detailed multi-species two-phase thermodynamic equilibrium model for large-eddy simulations (LES) of liquid-fuel injection and mixing at high pressure. The model can represent the coexistence of supercritical states and multi-component subcritical two-phase states. LES results for the transcritical Spray A of the Engine Combustion Network (ECN) are found to agree very well to available experimental data. We also address well-known numerical challenges of trans- and supercritical fluid mixing and compare a fully conservative formulation to a quasi conservative formulat…
The dynamics of compressible liquid-vapor flow depends sensitively on the microscale behavior at the phase boundary. We consider a sharp-interface approach, and propose a multiscale model to describe liquid-vapor flow accurately, without imposing ad-hoc closure relations on the continuum scale. The multiscale model combines the Euler equations on the continuum scale with molecular-scale particle simulations that govern the interface motion. We rely on an interface-preserving moving mesh finite volume method to discretize the continuum-scale sharp-interface flow in a conservative manner. Comput…
It is well-known that liquid and saturated vapor, separated by a flat interface in an unbounded space, are in equilibrium. One would similarly expect a liquid drop, sitting on a flat substrate, to be in equilibrium with the vapor surrounding it. Yet, it is not: as shown in this work, the drop evaporates. Mathematically, this conclusion is deduced using the diffuse-interface model, but it can also be reformulated in terms of the maximum-entropy principle, suggesting model independence. Physically, evaporation of drops is due to the so-called Kelvin effect, which gives rise to a liquid-to-vapor …
The evaporation of vapor bubbles inside a microchannel is important to realize a device with high cooling performance. The liquid film formed on the solid surface is essential for evaporative heat transfer from solid to fluid; its formation process and heat transfer characteristics need to be investigated. The expansion process of a single vapor bubble via evaporative heat transfer in microchannels was evaluated via a numerical simulation in this study. In the calculation model, the working fluid used was saturated FC-72 at 0.1013 MPa and the channel diameter was 200 $μ$m. The superheat of the…
In this paper, a numerical study is conducted to investigate boiling of a cryogen on a solid surface as well as on a liquid surface. Both single mode and multi-mode boiling is reported for boiling on to a solid surface. In case of boiling on a liquid surface, liquid nitrogen is selected as the cryogen (boiling fluid) and water is chosen as the base fluid (heating fluid). Different flow instabilities and their underlying consequences during boiling of a cryogen are also discussed. For the boiling on a solid surface, in the single mode, bubble growth, its departure, and area weighted average hea…
We introduce a meshfree collocation framework to model the phase change from liquid to vapor at or above the boiling point. While typical vaporization or boiling simulations focus on the vaporization from the bulk of the fluid, here we include the possibility of vaporization from the free surface, when a moving fluid comes into contact with a superheated surface. We present a continuum, one-fluid approach in which the liquid and vapor phases are modeled with the same constitutive equations, with different material properties. The novelty here is a monolithic approach without explicit modeling …
A thermomechanical model of continuous fluid media based on second gradient theory is used to study motions in liquid-vapor interfaces. At equilibrium, the model is shown to be equivalent to mean-field molecular theories of capillarity. In such fluids, conservative motions verify first integrals that lead to Kelvin circulation theorems and potential equations. The dynamical surface tension of liquid-vapor interfaces is deduced from viscous fluid equations. The result provides and explains the Marangoni effect.
The evolution of the liquid-vapour interface of a Lennard-Jones fluid is examined with molecular dynamics simulations using the intrinsic sampling method. Results suggest, in agreement with capillary wave theory, clear damping of the density profiles as the temperature is increased. We identify a linear variation of the space-filling nature (fractal dimension) of the stress-clusters at the intrinsic surface with increasing surface tension, or equivalently, with decreasing temperature. A percolation analysis of these stress networks indicates that the stress field is more disjointed at higher t…
Two-component liquid-vapor systems are modeled as two bulk phases divided by a two-dimensional surface phase and the mass and momentum balances are theoretically studied. Comparing the derived equations with some typical models of surface rheology, useful information about the interface location is obtained. It is demonstrated that the surface phase, set on the surface of tension, coincides with the equimolecular interface for insoluble surfactants, whereas it is placed on the surface of zero total mass density excess for soluble ones. The applicability of the model to surface electrostatics i…
In the Leidenfrost effect, a thin layer of evaporated vapor forms between a liquid and a hot solid. The complex interactions between the solid, liquid, and vapor phases can lead to rich dynamics even in a single Leidenfrost drop. Here we investigate the self-organized oscillations of Leidenfrost drops that are excited by a constant flow of evaporated vapor beneath the drop. We show that for small Leidenfrost drops, the frequency of a recently reported "breathing mode" can be explained by a simple balance of gravitational and surface tension forces. For large Leidenfrost drops, azimuthal star-s…
Understanding fluid phase behavior in high pressure and high temperature conditions is crucial for developing high-fidelity simulations of chemically reacting flows in liquid-fueled combustion systems. The study of vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) curves also forms an integral part of the design and modeling of the control processes in chemical and oil-gas industries. The main objective of this study was to develop data-driven models to predict VLE of Type III binary mixtures involving long-chained n-alkanes and nitrogen. Two data-driven models have been proposed in this study, each of which was…
Remaining within the pure hydrodynamic approach, we formulate a self-consistent model for simulating the dynamic behavior of matter passing through metastable states in the two-phase liquid-vapor region of the phase diagram. The model is based on the local criterion of explosive boiling, derived by applying the theory of homogeneous bubble nucleation in superheated liquids. Practical application of the proposed model is illustrated with hydrodynamic simulations of a volumetrically uniformly heated planar layer of fused silica SiO2. Implications for experimentally measurable quantities are brie…
The dynamics of two liquid droplets coalescing in their saturated vapor phase are investigated by Lattice Boltzmann numerical simulations. Attention is paid to the effect of the vapor phase on the formation and growth dynamics of the liquid bridge in the viscous regime. We observe that the onset of the coalescence occurs earlier and the expansion of the bridge initially proceeds faster when the coalescence takes place in a saturated vapor compared to the coalescence in a non-condensable gas. We argue that the initially faster evolution of the coalescence in the saturated vapor is caused by the…
In this paper the phase behavior and pattern formation in a sheared non-ideal fluid under a periodic potential is studied. An isothermal two-dimensional formulation of a lattice Boltzmann scheme for a liquid-vapor system with the van der Waals equation of state is presented and validated. Shear is applied by moving walls and the periodic potential will vary along the flow direction. A region of the parameter space, where in absence of flow a striped phase with oscillating density is stable, will be considered. At low shear rates the periodic patterns are preserved and slightly distorted by the…
We investigate the nature of vapor bubble nucleation near a nanoscale-curved convex liquid-solid interface using two models; an equilibrium Gibbs model for homogenous formation, and a nonequilibrium dynamic van der Waals/diffuse interface model for phase change in an initially cool liquid. Vapor bubble formation is shown to occur for sufficiently large radius of curvature and is suppressed for smaller radii. Solid-fluid interactions are accounted for and it is shown that liquid-vapor interfacial energy, hence Laplace pressure, has limited influence over bubble formation. The dominant factor is…
In this paper a diffuse-interface model featuring phase change, transition to supercritical conditions, thermal conduction, compressibility effects and shock wave propagation is exploited to deal with the dynamics of a cavitation bubble. At variance with previous descriptions, the model is uniformly valid for all phases (liquid, vapor and supercritical) and phase transitions involved, allowing to describe the non-equilibrium processes ongoing during the collapse. As consequence of this unitary description, rather unexpectedly for pure vapor bubbles, the numerical experiments show that the coll…
The mass and momentum balances are theoretically studied in heterogeneous two-component systems. Following Gibbs the system is presented as two bulk and a single surface phases. Comparing the equations derived with some typical rheological models, useful information about the location of the interface is obtained. It was demonstrated that the surface phase for insoluble surfactants coincides with the equimolecular interface, while for soluble ones it is placed on the surface of total mass density zero excess. In both cases the surface phase is close to the surface of tension and kinematic surf…
We study the effects of heterogeneity on interfacial pinning and hydrodynamic drag using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of Janus nanospheres at a liquid/vapor interface. We construct the free energy landscape for this system, both in the continuum approximation using surfaces tensions and the flat-interface approximation and atomistically using MD and thermodynamic integration. The results of the two methods differ in detail due to interfacial distortion and finite width, as well as thermal fluctuations, and only the MD landscape is consistent with simulations of a nanosphere approaching …
In the Leidenfrost effect, liquid drops deposited on a hot surface levitate on a thin vapor cushion fed by evaporation of the liquid. This vapor layer forms a concave depression in the drop interface. Using laser-light interference coupled to high-speed imaging, we measured the radius, curvature, and height of the vapor pocket, as well as non-axisymmetric fluctuations of the interface for water drops at different temperatures. The geometry of the vapor pocket depends primarily on the drop size and not on the substrate temperature.
We report a 2D modeling of the thermal diffusion-controlled growth of a vapor bubble attached to a heating surface during saturated boiling. The heat conduction problem is solved in a liquid that surrounds a bubble with a free boundary and in a semi-infinite solid heater by the boundary element method. At high system pressure the bubble is assumed to grow slowly, its shape being defined by the surface tension and the vapor recoil force, a force coming from the liquid evaporating into the bubble. It is shown that at some typical time the dry spot under the bubble begins to grow rapidly under th…
We study the meniscus on the outside of a small spherical particle with radius $R$ at a liquid-vapor interface. The liquid is confined in a cylindrical container with a finite radius $L$ and has a contact angle $π/2$ at the container surface. The center of the particle is placed at various heights along the central axis of the container. By varying $L$, we are able to systematically study the crossover of the meniscus from nanometer to macroscopic scales. The meniscus rise or depression on the particle is found to grow as $\ln (2L/R)$ when $R\ll L\ll κ^{-1}$ with $κ^{-1}$ being the capillary l…
We further develop a thermal LB model for multiphase flows. In the improved model, we propose to use the FFT scheme to calculate both the convection term and external force term. The usage of FFT scheme is detailed and analyzed. By using the FFT algorithm spatiotemporal discretization errors are decreased dramatically and the conservation of total energy is much better preserved. A direct consequence of the improvement is that the unphysical spurious velocities at the interfacial regions can be damped to neglectable scale. Together with the better conservation of total energy, the more accurat…
