In 2005 Wolfgang Willems put forward a conjecture proposing a lower bound for the sum of squares of the degrees of the irreducible $p$-Brauer characters of a finite group $G$. We prove this conjecture for the prime $p=2$. For this we rely on the recent reduction of Willems' conjecture to a question on quasi-simple groups by Tong-Viet. We also verify the conditions of Tong-Viet for certain families of finite quasi-simple groups and odd primes. On the way we obtain lower bounds for the number of regular semisimple conjugacy classes in finite groups of Lie type.
Let $G$ be a finite group and $N$ be a normal subgroup of $G$. Let $J=J(F[N])$ denote the Jacboson radical of $F[N]$ and $I={\rm Ann}(J)=\{α\in F[G]|Jα=0\}$. We have another algebra $F[G]/I$. We study the decomposition of Cartan matrix of $F[G]$ according to $F[G/N]$ and $F[G]/I$. This decomposition establishs some connections between Cartan invariants and chief composition factors of $G$. We find that existing zero-defect $p$-block in $N$ depends on the properties of $I$ in $F[G]$ or Cartan invariants. When we consider the Cartan invariants for a block algebra $B$ of $G$, the decomposition is…
In this paper, we study some variations of the well-known Itô-Michler theorem for $p$-Brauer characters using various inequalities involving the $p$-Brauer character degrees of finite groups. Several new criteria for the existence of a normal Sylow $p$-subgroup of finite groups are obtained using the $p$-parts and $p'$-parts of the $p$-Brauer character degrees.
We describe two methods for computing $p$-modular Brauer character tables for groups of Lie type $G(p^f)$ in defining characteristic $p$, assuming that the ordinary character table of $G(p^f)$ is known, and the weight multiplicities of the corresponding algebraic group $G$ are known for $p$-restricted highest weights.
We show that the decomposition matrix of a given group $G$ is unitriangular, whenever $G$ has a normal subgroup $N$ such that the decomposition matrix of $N$ is unitriangular, $G/N$ is abelian and certain characters of $N$ extend to their stabilizer in $G$. Using the recent result by Brunat--Dudas--Taylor establishing that unipotent blocks have a unitriangular decomposition matrix, this allows us to prove that blocks of groups of quasi-simple groups of Lie type have a unitriangular decomposition matrix, whenever they are related via Bonnafé--Dat--Rouquier's equivalence to a unipotent block. Th…
Brauer Theory for a finite group can be viewed as a method for comparing the representations of the group in characteristic 0 with those in prime characteristic. Here we generalize much of the machinery of Brauer theory to the setting of profinite groups. By regarding Grothendieck groups as functors we describe corresponding Grothendieck groups for profinite groups, and generalize the decomposition map, regarded as a natural transformation. We discuss characters and Brauer characters for profinite groups. We give a functorial description of the block theory of a profinite group. We finish with…
A conjecture raised by Cossey in 2007 asserts that if $G$ is a finite $p$-solvable group and $φ$ is an irreducible $p$-Brauer character of $G$ with vertex $Q$, then the number of lifts of $φ$ is at most $|Q:Q'|$. This conjecture is now known to be true in several situations for $p$ odd, but there has been little progress for $p$ even. The main obstacle appeared in characteristic two is that all the vertex pairs of a lift are neither linear nor conjugate. In this paper we show that if $χ$ is a lift of an irreducible $2$-Brauer character in a solvable group, then $χ$ has a linear Navarro vertex …
The longstanding Alperin weight conjecture and its blockwise version have been reduced to simple groups recently by Navarro, Tiep, Spaeth and Koshitani. Thus, to prove this conjecture, it suffices to verify the corresponding inductive condition for all finite simple groups. The first is to establish an equivariant bijection between irreducible Brauer characters and weights for the universal covering groups of simple groups. Assume q is a power of some odd prime p. We first prove the blockwise Alperin weight conjecture for Sp2n(q) and odd non-defining characteristics. If the decomposition matri…
Recently, a new conjecture on the degrees of the irreducible Brauer characters of a finite group was presented by the second author. In this paper we propose a 'local' version of this conjecture for blocks B of finite groups, giving a lower bound for the maximal degree of an irreducible Brauer character belonging to B in terms of the dimension of B and well-known invariants like the defect and the number of irreducible Brauer characters. We also propose a weaker version of this conjecture for which a slight reformulation leads to interesting open questions about traces of Cartan matrices of bl…
It is well known that the number of real irreducible characters of a finite group G coincides with the number of real conjugacy classes of G. Richard Brauer has asked if the number of irreducible characters with Frobenius-Schur indicator 1 can also be expressed in group theoretical terms. We show that this can done by counting solutions of $g_1^2\ldots g_n^2=1$ with $g_1,\ldots,g_n\in G$.
Let $G_2(q)$ be the Chevalley group of type $G_2$ defined over a finite field with q=p^n elements, where p is a prime number and $n$ is a positive integer. In this paper, we determine when the restriction of an absolutely irreducible representation of $G$ in characteristic other than p to a maximal subgroup of $G_2(q)$ is still irreducible. Similar results are obtained for $^2B_2(q)$ and $^2G_2(q)$.
The Fong-Swan theorem shows that for a $p$-solvable group $G$ and Brauer character $ϕ\in \ibrg$, there is an ordinary character $χ\in \irrg$ such that $χ^0 = ϕ$, where $^0$ denotes restriction to the $p$-regular elements of $G$. This still holds in the generality of $π$-separable groups \cite{bpi}, where $\ibrg$ is replaced by $\ipig$. For $ϕ\in \ipig$, let $L_ϕ = \{χ\in \irrg \mid χ^0 = ϕ\}$. In this paper we give a lower bound for the size of $L_ϕ$ in terms of the structure of the normal nucleus of $ϕ$ and, if $G$ is assumed to be odd and $π= \{p' \}$, we give an upper bound for $L_ϕ$ in ter…

We study Brauer's long-standing $k(B)$-conjecture on the number of characters in $p$-blocks for finite quasi-simple groups and show that their blocks do not occur as a minimal counterexample for $p\ge5$ nor in the case of abelian defect. For $p=3$ we obtain that the principal 3-blocks do not provide minimal counterexamples. We also determine the precise number of irreducible characters in unipotent blocks of classical groups for odd primes.
Let k(B_0) and l(B_0) respectively denote the number of ordinary and p-Brauer irreducible characters in the principal block B_0 of a finite group G. We prove that, if k(B_0)-l(B_0)=1, then l(B_0)\geq p-1 or else p=11 and l(B_0)=9. This follows from a more general result that for every finite group G in which all non-trivial p-elements are conjugate, l(B_0)\geq p-1 or else p = 11 and G/O_{p'}(G) =11^2:SL(2,5). These results are useful in the study of principal blocks with a few characters. We propose that, in every finite group G of order divisible by p, the number of irreducible Brauer charact…
The computation of the Brauer group BM of modified supergroup algebras is perfomed, yielding, in particular, the computation of the Brauer group of all finite-dimensional triangular Hopf algebras when the base field is algebraically closed and of characteristic zero. The results are compared with the computation of lazy cohomology and with Yinhuo Zhang's exact sequence. As an example, we compute explicitely the Brauer group and lazy cohomology for modified supergroup algebras with (extensions of) Weyl groups of irreducible root systems as a group datum and their standard representation as a re…
The Brauer algebra has a basis of diagrams and these generate a monoid $H$ consisting of scalar multiples of diagrams. Following a recent paper by Kudryavtseva and Mazorchuk, we define and completely determine three types of conjugation in $H$. We are thus able to define modular characters for Brauer algebras which share many of the properties of Brauer characters defined for finite groups over a field of prime characteristic. Furthermore, we reformulate and extend the theory of ordinary characters for Brauer algebras as introduced by Ram to the case when the Brauer algebra is not semisimple.
Navarro defined the set ${Irr}(G \mid Q, δ) \subseteq {Irr}(G)$, where $Q$ is a $p$-subgroup of a $p$-solvable group $G$, and shows that if $δ$ is the trivial character of $Q$, then ${Irr}(G \mid Q, δ)$ provides a set of canonical lifts of ${\textup{IBr}}_p(G)$, the irreducible Brauer characters with vertex $Q$. Previously, Isaacs defined a canonical set of lifts $\bpig$ of $\ipig$. Both of these results extend the Fong-Swan Theorem to $π$-separable groups, and both construct canonical sets of lifts of the generalized Brauer characters. It is known that in the case that $2 \in π$, or if $|G| $…
We prove Clifford theoretic results on the representations of finite groups which only hold in characteristic $2$. Let $G$ be a finite group, let $N$ be a normal subgroup of $G$ and let $φ$ be an irreducible $2$-Brauer character of $N$ which is self-dual. We prove that there is a unique self-dual irreducible Brauer character $θ$ of $G$ such that $φ$ occurs with odd multiplicity in the restriction of $θ$ to $N$. Moreover this multiplicity is $1$. Conversely if $θ$ is an irreducible $2$-Brauer character of $G$ which is self-dual but not of quadratic type, the restriction of $θ$ to $N$ is a sum o…
We give a geometric description of the blocks of the Brauer algebra $B_n(δ)$ in characteristic zero as orbits of the Weyl group of type $D_n$. We show how the corresponding affine Weyl group controls the representation theory of the Brauer algebra in positive characteristic, with orbits corresponding to unions of blocks.
We introduce Brauer algebras associated to complex reflection groups of type $G(m,p,n)$, and study their representation theory via Clifford theory. In particular, we determine the decomposition numbers of these algebras in characteristic zero.
We give a sufficient condition for the $kG$-Scott module with vertex $P$ to remain indecomposable under taking the Brauer construction for any subgroup $Q$ of $P$ as $k[Q\,C_G(Q)]$-module, where $k$ is a field of characteristic $2$, and $P$ is a wreathed $2$-subgroup of a finite group $G$. This generalizes results for the cases where $P$ is abelian and some others. The motivation of this paper is that the Brauer indecomposability of a $p$-permutation bimodule ($p$ is a prime) is one of the key steps in order to obtain a splendid stable equivalence of Morita type by making use of the gluing met…
Let $G$ be an arbitrary finite group. The McKay conjecture asserts that $G$ and the normaliser $N_G (P)$ of a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ in $G$ have the same number of characters of degree not divisible by $p$ (that is, of $p'$-degree). We propose a new refinement of the McKay conjecture, which suggests that one may choose a correspondence between the characters of $p'$-degree of $G$ and $N_G (P)$ to be compatible with induction and restriction in a certain sense. This refinement implies, in particular, a conjecture of Isaacs and Navarro. We also state a corresponding refinement of the Broué abeli…
We determine the blocks of the walled Brauer algebra in characteristic zero. These can be described in terms of orbits of the action of a Weyl group of type $A$ on a certain set of weights. In positive characteristic we give a linkage principle in terms of orbits of the corresponding affine Weyl group. We also classify the semisimple walled Brauer algebras in all characteristics.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of prime characteristic $p$ and $P$ a finite $p$-group. We compute the Scott $kG$-module with vertex $P$ when $\mathcal{F}$ is a constrained fusion system on $P$ and $G$ is Park's group for $\mathcal{F}$. In the case $\mathcal{F}$ is a fusion system of the quadratic group $Qd(p)=(\mathbb{Z}/p \times \mathbb{Z}/p)\rtimes {\mathrm{SL}}(2,p)$ on a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ of $Qd(p)$ and $G$ is Park's group for $\mathcal{F}$, we prove that the Scott $kG$-module with vertex $P$ is Brauer indecomposable.
A well-known theorem of Burnside says that if $ρ$ is a faithful representation of a finite group $G$ over a field of characteristic $0$, then every irreducible representation of $G$ appears as a constituent of a tensor power of $ρ$. In 1962, R. Steinberg gave a module theoretic proof that simultaneously removed the constraint on the characteristic, and allowed the group to be replaced by a monoid. Brauer subsequently simplified Burnside's proof and, moreover, showed that if the character of $ρ$ takes on $r$ distinct values, then the first $r$ tensor powers of $ρ$ already contain amongst them a…
Let $G$ be the finite simple Chevalley group of type $^2E_6(2)$. It has a Schur multiplier of type $C_2^2 \times C_3$. We determine the ordinary character tables of the central extensions $3.G$, $6.G$, $(2^2\times 3).G$ of $G$ and their extensions by an automorphism of order $2$, that is $3.G.2$, $6.G.2$ and $(2^2\times 3).G.2$. Furthermore we determine all Brauer trees of all groups of type $Z.G.A$ (where $Z$ is central in $Z.G \lhd Z.G.A$ and $A \cong Z.G.A/Z.G$) for which the ordinary character table is known.
In this paper, we first show that the irreducible characters of a quotient table algebra modulo a normal closed subset can be viewed as the irreducible characters of the table algebra itself. Furthermore, we define the character products for table algebras and give a condition in which the products of two characters are characters. Thereafter, as a main result we state and prove the Burnside-Brauer Theorem on finite groups for table algebras.
In 1941, Brauer-Nesbitt established a characterization of a block with trivial defect group as a block $B$ with $k(B) = 1$ where $k(B)$ is the number of irreducible ordinary characters of $B$. In 1982, Brandt established a characterization of a block with defect group of order two as a block $B$ with $k(B) = 2$. These correspond to the cases when the block is Morita equivalent to the one-dimensional algebra and to the non-semisimple two-dimensional algebra, respectively. In this paper, we redefine $k(A)$ to be the codimension of the commutator subspace $K(A)$ of a finite-dimensional algebra $A…
In this paper we study finite generation of the Ext algebra of a Brauer graph algebra by determining the degrees of the generators. As a consequence we characterize the Brauer graph algebras that are Koszul and those that are K_2.
The classical characteristic map associates symmetric functions to characters of the symmetric groups. There are two natural analogues of this map involving the Brauer algebra. The first of them relies on the action of the orthogonal or symplectic group on a space of tensors, while the second is provided by the action of this group on the symmetric algebra of the corresponding Lie algebra. We consider the second characteristic map both in the orthogonal and symplectic case, and calculate the images of central idempotents of the Brauer algebra in terms of the Schur polynomials. The calculation …
Let $p$ be a prime number, $G$ a finite group, $P$ a $p$-subgroup of $G$ and $k$ an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$. We study the relationship between the category $\Ff_P(G)$ and the behavior of $p$-permutation $kG$-modules with vertex $P$ under the Brauer construction. We give a sufficient condition for $\Ff_P(G)$ to be a saturated fusion system. We prove that for Scott modules with abelian vertex, our condition is also necessary. In order to obtain our results, we prove a criterion for the categories arising from the data of $(b, G)$-Brauer pairs in the sense of Alperin-Brou…
In this note we give applications of recent results coming mostly from the third paper of this series. It is shown that the number of irreducible characters in a $p$-block of a finite group with abelian defect group $D$ is bounded by $|D|$ (Brauer's $k(B)$-Conjecture) provided $D$ has no large elementary abelian direct summands. Moreover, we verify Brauer's $k(B)$-Conjecture for all blocks with minimal non-abelian defect groups. This extends previous results by various authors.
For a torsion unit $u$ of the integral group ring $\mathbb{Z} G$ of a finite group $G$, and a prime $p$ which does not divide the order of $u$ (but the order of $G$), a relation between the partial augmentations of $u$ on the $p$-regular classes of $G$ and Brauer character values is noted, analogous to the obvious relation between partial augmentations and ordinary character values. For non-solvable $G$, consequences concerning rational conjugacy of $u$ to a group element are discussed, considering as examples the symmetric group $S_{5}$ and the groups $\text{\rm PSL}(2,p^{f})$.
We prove that the Brauer algebra, for all parameters for which it is quasi-hereditary, is Ringel dual to a category of representations of the orthosymplectic super group. As a consequence we obtain new and algebraic proofs for some results on the fundamental theorems of invariant theory for this super group over the complex numbers and also extend them to some cases in positive characteristic. Our methods also apply to the walled Brauer algebra in which case we obtain a duality with the general linear super group, with similar applications.
In this article we determine the Brauer trees of the unipotent blocks with cyclic defect group in the `groups' $I_2(n,q)$, $H_3(q)$ and $H_4(q)$. The degrees of the unipotent characters of these objects were given by Lusztig, and using the general theory of perverse equivalences we can reconstruct the Brauer trees that would be consistent with Deligne--Lusztig theory and the geometric version of Broué's conjecture. We construct the trees using standard arguments whenever possible, and check that the Brauer trees predicted by Broué's conjecture are consistent with both the mathematics and philo…
For a block $B$ of a finite group we prove that $k(B)\le(\det C-1)/l(B)+l(B)\le\det C$ where $k(B)$ (respectively $l(B)$) is the number of irreducible ordinary (respectively Brauer) characters of $B$, and $C$ is the Cartan matrix of $B$. As an application, we show that Brauer's $k(B)$-Conjecture holds for every block with abelian defect group $D$ and inertial quotient $T$ provided there exists an element $u\in D$ such that $C_T(u)$ acts freely on $D/<u>$. This gives a new proof of Brauer's Conjecture for abelian defect groups of rank at most $2$. We also prove the conjecture in case $l(B)\le 3…
We prove that any projective Schur algebra over a field $K$ is equivalent in $Br(K)$ to a radical abelian algebra. This was conjectured in 1995 by Sonn and the first author of this paper. As a consequence we obtain a characterization of the projective Schur group by means of Galois cohomology. The conjecture was known for algebras over fields of positive characteristic. In characteristic zero the conjecture was known for algebras over fields with an Henselian valuation over a local or global field of characteristic zero.
The numerical invariants (global) cohomological length, (global) cohomological width, and (global) cohomological range of complexes (algebras) are introduced. Cohomological range leads to the concepts of derived bounded algebras and strongly derived unbounded algebras naturally. The first and second Brauer-Thrall type theorems for the bounded derived category of a finite-dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field are obtained. The first Brauer-Thrall type theorem says that derived bounded algebras are just derived finite algebras. The second Brauer-Thrall type theorem says that an …
Using equivalences of categories we provide isomorphisms between the Brauer groups of different Hopf algebras. As an example, we show that when k is a field of characteristic different from 2 the Brauer groups BC(k,H_4,r_t) for every dual quasitriangular structure r_t on Sweedler's Hopf algebra H_4 are all isomorphic to the direct sum of (k,+) and the Brauer-Wall group of k. We provide an isomorphism between the Brauer group of a Hopf algebra H and the Brauer group of the dual Hopf algebra H^* generalizing a result of Tilborghs. Finally we relate the Brauer groups of H and of its opposite and …
We develop the local-global theory of blocks for profinite groups. Given a field $k$ of characteristic $p$ and a profinite group $G$, one may express the completed group algebra $k[[G]]$ as a product $\prod_{i\in I}B_i$ of closed indecomposable algebras, called the blocks of $G$. To each block $B$ of $G$ we associate a pro-$p$ subgroup of $G$, called the defect group of $B$, unique up to conjugacy in $G$. We give several characterizations of the defect group in analogy with defect groups of blocks of finite groups. Our main theorem is a Brauer correspondence between the blocks of $G$ with defe…
This article is the final one of a series of articles on certain blocks of modular representations of finite groups of Lie type and the associated geometry. We prove the conjecture of Broué on derived equivalences induced by the complex of cohomology of Deligne-Lusztig varieties in the case of Coxeter elements whenever the defining characteristic is good. We also prove a conjecture of Hiß, Lübeck and Malle on the Brauer trees of the corresponding blocks. As a consequence, we determine the Brauer trees (in particular, the decomposition matrix) of the principal $\ell$-block of $E_7(q)$ when $\el…
In this paper we consider the $q$-Brauer algebra over $R$ a commutative noetherian domain. We first construct a new basis for $q$-Brauer algebras, and we then prove that it is a cell basis, and thus these algebras are cellular in the sense of Graham and Lehrer. In particular, they are shown to be an iterated inflation of Hecke algebras of type $A_{n-1}.$ Moreover, when $R$ is a field of arbitrary characteristic, we determine for which parameters the $q$-Brauer algebras are quasi-heredity. So the general theory of cellular algebras and quasi-hereditary algebras applies to $q$-Brauer algebras. A…
We study the periplectic Brauer algebra introduced by Moon in the study of invariant theory for periplectic Lie superalgebras. We determine when the algebra is quasi-hereditary and, for fields of characteristic zero, describe the block decomposition. To achieve this, we also develop theories of Jucys-Murphy elements, Bratteli diagrams, Murphy bases, determine when there exist quasi-hereditary 1-covers, obtain a BGG reciprocity relation and determine some decomposition multiplicities of cell modules. As an application, we determine the blocks in the category of finite dimensional weight modules…
For a smooth variety $X$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$, to a differential 1-form $α$ on the Frobenius twist $X^{(1)}$ one can associate an Azumaya algebra $\mathcal D_{X,α}$, defined as a certain central reduction of the algebra $\mathcal D_X$ of "crystalline differential operators" on $X$. For a resolution of singularities $π:X\to Y$ of an affine variety $Y$, we study for which $α$ does the class $[\mathcal D_{X,α}]$ in the Brauer group $\mathrm{Br}(X^{(1)})$ descend to $Y^{(1)}$. In the case when $X$ is symplectic, this question is related to Fedosov quantizations …
