The Fong-Swan theorem shows that for a $p$-solvable group $G$ and Brauer character $ϕ\in \ibrg$, there is an ordinary character $χ\in \irrg$ such that $χ^0 = ϕ$, where $^0$ denotes restriction to the $p$-regular elements of $G$. This still holds in the generality of $π$-separable groups \cite{bpi}, where $\ibrg$ is replaced by $\ipig$. For $ϕ\in \ipig$, let $L_ϕ = \{χ\in \irrg \mid χ^0 = ϕ\}$. In this paper we give a lower bound for the size of $L_ϕ$ in terms of the structure of the normal nucleus of $ϕ$ and, if $G$ is assumed to be odd and $π= \{p' \}$, we give an upper bound for $L_ϕ$ in terms of the vertex subgroup for $ϕ$.
A conjecture raised by Cossey in 2007 asserts that if $G$ is a finite $p$-solvable group and $φ$ is an irreducible $p$-Brauer character of $G$ with vertex $Q$, then the number of lifts of $φ$ is at most $|Q:Q'|$. This conjecture is now known to be true in several situations for $p$ odd, but there has been little progress for $p$ even. The main obstacle appeared in characteristic two is that all the vertex pairs of a lift are neither linear nor conjugate. In this paper we show that if $χ$ is a lift of an irreducible $2$-Brauer character in a solvable group, then $χ$ has a linear Navarro vertex …
Navarro defined the set ${Irr}(G \mid Q, δ) \subseteq {Irr}(G)$, where $Q$ is a $p$-subgroup of a $p$-solvable group $G$, and shows that if $δ$ is the trivial character of $Q$, then ${Irr}(G \mid Q, δ)$ provides a set of canonical lifts of ${\textup{IBr}}_p(G)$, the irreducible Brauer characters with vertex $Q$. Previously, Isaacs defined a canonical set of lifts $\bpig$ of $\ipig$. Both of these results extend the Fong-Swan Theorem to $π$-separable groups, and both construct canonical sets of lifts of the generalized Brauer characters. It is known that in the case that $2 \in π$, or if $|G| $…
In this paper we examine the behavior of lifts of Brauer characters in p-solvable groups where p is an odd prime. In the main result, we show that if ϕ\in IBrp(G) is a Brauer character of a solvable group such that ϕhas an abelian vertex subgroup Q, then the number of lifts of ϕin Irr(G) is at most |Q|. In order to accomplish this, we develop several results about lifts of Brauer characters in p-solvable groups that were previously only known to be true in the case of groups of odd order.
Let $Q$ be a $p$-subgroup of a finite $p$-solvable group $G$, where $p$ is a prime, and suppose that $δ$ is a linear character of $Q$ with the property that $δ(x)=δ(y)$ whenever $x,y\in Q$ are conjugate in $G$. In this situation, we show that restriction to $p$-regular elements defines a canonical bijection from the set of those irreducible ordinary characters of $G$ with Navarro vertex $(Q,δ)$ onto the set of irreducible Brauer characters of $G$ with Green vertex $Q$. Also, we use this correspondence to examine the behavior of lifts of Brauer characters with respect to normal subgroups.
Let $G$ be a finite solvable or symmetric group and let $B$ be a $2$-block of $G$. We construct a canonical correspondence between the irreducible characters of height zero in $B$ and those in its Brauer first main correspondent. For symmetric groups our bijection is compatible with restriction of characters.
Let $G$ be a finite solvable group, and let $p$ be a prime. In this note, we prove that $p$ does not divide $φ(1)$ for every irreducible monomial $p$-Brauer character $φ$ of $G$ if and only if $G$ has a normal Sylow $p$-subgroup.
We give a handy way to have a situation that the $kG$-Scott module with vertex $P$ remains indecomposable under taking the Brauer construction for any subgroup $Q$ of $P$ as $k[Q\,C_G(Q)]$-module, where $k$ is a field of characteristic $p>0$. The motivation is that the Brauer indecomposability of a $p$-permutation bimodule is one of the key steps in order to obtain a splendid stable equivalence of Morita type by making use of the gluing method, that then can possibly lift to a splendid derived equivalence. Further our result explains a hidden reason why the Brauer indecomposability of the Scot…
We give a sufficient condition for the $kG$-Scott module with vertex $P$ to remain indecomposable under taking the Brauer construction for any subgroup $Q$ of $P$ as $k[Q\,C_G(Q)]$-module, where $k$ is a field of characteristic $2$, and $P$ is a wreathed $2$-subgroup of a finite group $G$. This generalizes results for the cases where $P$ is abelian and some others. The motivation of this paper is that the Brauer indecomposability of a $p$-permutation bimodule ($p$ is a prime) is one of the key steps in order to obtain a splendid stable equivalence of Morita type by making use of the gluing met…
We present a sufficient condition for the $kG$-Scott module with vertex $P$ to remain indecomposable under the Brauer construction for any subgroup $Q$ of $P$ as $k[Q\,C_G(Q)]$-module, where $k$ is a field of characteristic $2$, and $P$ is a semidihedral $2$-subgroup of a finite group $G$. This generalizes results for the cases where $P$ is abelian or dihedral. The Brauer indecomposability is defined \linebreak by R.~Kessar, N.~Kunugi and N.~Mitsuhashi. The motivation of \linebreak this paper is a fact that the Brauer indecomposability of a $p$-permutation bimodule ($p$ is a prime) is one of t…
We show that if $p$ is a prime and $G$ is a finite $p$-solvable group satisfying the condition that a prime $q$ divides the degree of no irreducible $p$-Brauer character of $G$, then the normalizer of some Sylow $q$-subgroup of $G$ meets all the conjugacy classes of $p$-regular elements of $G$.
We prove a lifting theorem for odd Frattini covers of finite groups. Using this, we characterize solvable groups and more generally p-solvable groups in terms of containing a triple of elements of distinct prime power orders with product 1. This is also related to various questions about Fried's modular tower program and properties of Hurwitz spaces of covers of curves.
Recently, a new conjecture on the degrees of the irreducible Brauer characters of a finite group was presented by the second author. In this paper we propose a 'local' version of this conjecture for blocks B of finite groups, giving a lower bound for the maximal degree of an irreducible Brauer character belonging to B in terms of the dimension of B and well-known invariants like the defect and the number of irreducible Brauer characters. We also propose a weaker version of this conjecture for which a slight reformulation leads to interesting open questions about traces of Cartan matrices of bl…
The versal deformation ring R(G,V) of a mod p representation V of a profinite group G encodes all isomorphism classes of lifts of V to representations of G over complete local commutative Noetherian rings. We introduce a new technique for determining R(G,V) when G is finite which involves Brauer's generalized decomposition numbers.
Suppose $G$ is a $p$-solvable group, where $p$ is odd. We explore the connection between lifts of Brauer characters of $G$ and certain local objects in $G$, called vertex pairs. We show that if $χ$ is a lift, then the vertex pairs of $χ$ form a single conjugacy class. We use this to prove a sufficient condition for a given pair to be a vertex pair of a lift and to study the behavior of lifts with respect to normal subgroups.
Let G be a p-solvable group, P a p-subgroup and chi in Irr(G) such that chi(1)_p \ge |G:P|_p. We prove that the restriction chi_P is a sum of characters induced from subgroups Q\le P such that chi(1)_p=|G:Q|_p. This generalizes previous results by Giannelli--Navarro and Giannelli--Sambale on the number of linear constituents of chi_P. Although this statement does not hold for arbitrary groups, we conjecture a weaker version which can be seen as an extension of Brauer--Nesbitt's theorem on characters of p-defect zero. It also extends a conjecture of Wilde.
We propose a projective version of the celebrated Brauer's Height Zero Conjecture on characters of finite groups and prove it, among other cases, for $p$-solvable groups as well as for (some) quasi-simple groups.
Let p be a prime, B a p-block of a finite group G and b its Brauer correspondent. According to the Alperin-McKay Conjecture, there exists a bijection between the set of irreducible ordinary characters of height zero of B and those of b. In this paper, we show that whenever G is p-solvable such a bijection can be found, both for ordinary and Brauer characters, with the additional property of being compatible with divisibility of character degrees. In this case, we also show that the dimension of b divides the dimension of B.
Suppose that $B$ is a Brauer $p$-block of a finite group $G$ with a unique modular character $φ$. We prove that $φ$ is liftable to an ordinary character of $G$ (which moreover is $p$-rational for odd $p$). This confirms the basic set conjecture for these blocks.
Let $G$ be a finite group and let $p$ be a prime. Assume that there exists a prime $q$ dividing $|G|$ which does not divide the order of any $p$-local subgroup of $G$. If $G$ is $p$-solvable or $q$ divides $p-1$, then $G$ has a $p$-block of defect zero. The case $q=2$ is a well-known result by Brauer and Fowler.
If $G$ is a solvable group and $p$ is a prime, then the Fong-Swan theorem shows that given any irreducible Brauer character $ϕ$ of $G$, there exists a character $χ\in \irrg$ such that $χ^o = ϕ$, where $^o$ denotes the restriction of $χ$ to the $p$-regular elements of $G$. We say that $χ$ is a {\it{lift}} of $ϕ$ in this case. It is known that if $ϕ$ is in a block with abelian defect group $D$, then the number of lifts of $ϕ$ is bounded above by $|D|$. In this paper we give a necessary and sufficient condition for this bound to be achieved, in terms of local information in a subgroup $V$ determi…
Let $G$ be a solvable group. Let $p$ be a prime and let $Q$ be a $p$-subgroup of a subgroup $V$. Suppose $ϕ\in \ibr G$. If either $|G|$ is odd or $p = 2$, we prove that the number of Brauer characters of $H$ inducing $ϕ$ with vertex $Q$ is at most $|\norm GQ: \norm VQ|$.
