We give a short proof that the ergodic sums of $\mathcal{C}^1$ observables for a $\mathcal{C}^1$ flow on $\mathbb{T}^2$ admitting a closed transversal curve whose Poincaré map has constant type rotation number have growth deviating at most logarithmically from a linear one. For this, we relate the latter integral to the Birkhoff sum of a well-chosen observable on the circle and use the Denjoy-Koksma inequality. We also give an example of a nonminimal flow satisfying the above assumptions.
We study the fluctuations of ergodic sums using global and local specifications on periodic points. We obtain Lindeberg-type central limit theorems in both situations. As an application, when the system possesses a unique measure of maximal entropy, we show weak convergence of ergodic sums to a mixture of normal distributions. Our results suggest decomposing the variances of ergodic sums according to global and local sources.
We show that there exists a universal gap in the failure of the ergodic theorem for symmetric Birkhoff sums in infinite ergodic theory. In addition, an application of this result to a question of fluctuations of the Birkhoff integrals of horocyclic flows on geometrically finite surfaces is given.
If a non-ergodic, partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism on the 3-torus is homotopic to an Anosov diffeomorphism $A$, it is topologically conjugate to $A$.
Consider the space of analytic, quasi-periodic cocycles on the higher dimensional torus. We provide examples of cocycles with nontrivial Lyapunov spectrum, whose homotopy classes do not contain any cocycles satisfying the dominated splitting property. This shows that the main result in the recent work "Complex one-frequency cocycles" by A. Ávila, S. Jitomirskaya and C. Sadel does not hold in the higher dimensional torus setting.
We show that the absolutely normalized, symmetric Birkhoff sums of positive integrable functions in infinite, ergodic systems never converge pointwise even though they may be almost surely bounded away from zero and infinity.
An example due to Erdos and Fortet shows that, for a lacunary sequence of integers (q_n) and a trigonometric polynomial f, the asymptotic distribution of normalized sums of f(q_k x) can be a mixture of gaussian laws. Here we give a generalization of their example interpreted as the limiting behavior of some modified ergodic sums in the framework of dynamical systems.
For a rotation by an irrational $α$ on the circle and a BV function $φ$, we study the variance of the ergodic sums $S_L φ(x) := \sum_{j=0}^{L -1} \, φ(x + jα)$. When $α$ is not of constant type, we construct sequences $(L_N)$ such that, at some scale, the ergodic sums $S_{L_N} φ$ satisfy an ASIP. Explicit non-degenerate examples are given, with an application to the rectangular periodic billiard in the plane.
A classical fact in ergodic theory is that ergodicity is equivalent to almost everywhere divergence of ergodic sums of all nonnegative integrable functions which are not identically zero. We show two methods, one in the measure preserving case and one in the nonsingular case, which enable one to prove this criteria by checking it on a dense collection of functions and then extending it to all nonnegative functions. The first method is then used in a new proof of a folklore criterion for ergodicity of Poisson suspensions which does not make any reference to Fock spaces. The second method which …
Let T be an ergodic automorphism of the d-dimensional torus. In the spirit of Le Borgne, we give conditions on the Fourier coeffi cients of a real valued function f under which the Birkhoff sums satis fy a strong invariance principle. Next, reinforcing the condition on the Fourier coeffi cients in a natural way, we obtain explicit rates of convergence in the strong invariance principle.
We study the Kronecker sequence $\{nα\}_{n\leq N}$ on the torus ${\mathbb T}^d$ when $α$ is uniformly distributed on ${\mathbb T}^d.$ We show that the discrepancy of the number of visits of this sequence to a random box, normalized by $\ln^d N$, converges as $N\to\infty$ to a Cauchy distribution. The key ingredient of the proof is a Poisson limit theorem for the Cartan action on the space of $d+1$ dimensional lattices.
The isomorphism problem in ergodic theory was formulated by von Neumann in 1932 in his pioneering paper Zur Operatorenmethode in der klassischen Mechanik (Ann. of Math. (2), 33(3):587--642, 1932). The problem has been solved for some classes of transformations that have special properties, such as the collection of transformations with discrete spectrum or Bernoulli shifts. This paper shows that a general classification is impossible (even in concrete settings) by showing that the collection $E$ of pairs of ergodic, Lebesgue measure preserving diffeomorphisms $(S,T)$ of the 2-torus that are is…
A complex polynomial $P(z) = c_0 + c_1 z +...+ c_n z^n$ is called unimodular if $|c_j| = 1$, $j = 0,...,n$. Littlewood asked the question (1966) on how close a unimodular polynomial come to satisfying $|P(z)| \approx \sqrt{n+1}$ if $n \ge 1$? In this paper we show that for a given $0 < a < b$ and $\eps > 0$ there exist trigonometric sums $\cP(t) = n^{-1/2} \sum_{j=0}^{n-1} \exp(2πi tω(j))$ with a real frequency function $ω(j)$ which are $\eps$-flat on segment $[a,b]$ acording to the norm in $L^1([a,b])$ (as well as in $L^2([a,b])$). We apply this method to construct a dynamical system having s…
Rates of Divergence of non-Conventional Ergodic Averages
本文研究遍历和沿时间序列(a_n)的增长率:S_N f(x)=f(T^{a_1}x)+. + f(T^{a_N}x).
We provide a systematic study of a noncommutative extension of the classical Anzai skew-product for the cartesian product of two copies of the unit circle to the noncommutative 2-tori. In particular, some relevant ergodic properties are proved for these quantum dynamical systems, extending the corresponding ones enjoyed by the classical Anzai skew-product. As an application, for a uniquely ergodic Anzai skew-product $\F$ on the noncommutative $2$-torus $\ba_\a$, $\a\in\br$, we investigate the pointwise limit, $\lim_{n\to+\infty}\frac1{n}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}ł^{-k}\F^k(x)$, for $x\in\ba_\a$ and $ł$ …
We consider the geodesic flow of reversible Finsler metrics on the 2-sphere and the 2-torus, whose geodesic flow has vanishing topological entropy. Following a construction of A. Katok, we discuss examples of Finsler metrics on both surfaces, which have large ergodic components for the geodesic flow in the unit tangent bundle. On the other hand, using results of J. Franks and M. Handel, we prove that ergodicity and dense orbits cannot occur in the full unit tangent bundle of the 2-sphere, if the Finsler metric has positive flag curvatures and at least two closed geodesics. In the case of the 2…
We show that the ergodic averages for the horocycle flow on the two-torus associated by Giulietti and Liverani to an Anosov diffeomorphism either grow linearly or are bounded, in other words there are no deviations. For this, we use topological invariance of the Artin-Mazur zeta function to exclude resonances outside of the open unit disc. Transfer operators acting on suitable spaces of anisotropic distributions and their Ruelle determinants are the key tools in the proof. As a bonus, we show that for any smooth Anosov diffeomorphism F on the two-torus, the correlations for the measure of maxi…
Recently Matthew Foreman and Benjamin Weiss showed in a series of papers that smooth ergodic diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold are unclassifiable up to measure-isomorphism. In this paper we show that the uniform circular systems used in the work of Foreman-Weiss admit real-analytic realizations on the torus. As a consequence we obtain the same anti-classification result for real-analytic ergodic diffeomorphisms on the torus. In another application we show the existence of an uncountable family of pairwise non-Kakutani equivalent real-analytic diffeomorphisms on the torus.
We show the existence of a limiting distribution $\cD_\cC$ of the adequately normalized discrepancy function of a random translation on a torus relative to a strictly convex set $\cC$. Using a correspondence between the small divisors in the Fourier series of the discrepancy function and lattices with short vectors, and mixing of diagonal flows on the space of lattices, we identify $\cD_\cC$ with the distribution of the level sets of a function defined on the product of the space of lattices with an infinite dimensional torus. We apply our results to counting lattice points in slanted cylinder…
We consider implications of dynamical Borel-Cantelli lemmas for rates of growth of Birkhoff sums of non-integrable observables $φ(x) = d(x,p)^{-k}$, $k>0$, on ergodic dynamical systems $(T,X,μ)$ where $μ(X) = 1$. Some general results are given as well as some more concrete examples involving non-uniformly expanding maps, intermittent type maps as well as uniformly hyperbolic systems.
We obtain estimates on the uniform convergence rate of the Birkhoff average of a continuous observable over torus translations and affine skew product toral transformations. The convergence rate depends explicitly on the modulus of continuity of the observable and on the arithmetic properties of the frequency defining the transformation. Furthermore, we show that for the one dimensional torus translation, these estimates are nearly optimal.
We consider the system of $N$ ($\ge2$) elastically colliding hard balls of masses $m_1,...,m_N$ and radius $r$ on the flat unit torus $\Bbb T^ν$, $ν\ge2$. We prove the so called Boltzmann-Sinai Ergodic Hypothesis, i. e. the full hyperbolicity and ergodicity of such systems for every selection $(m_1,...,m_N;r)$ of the external geometric parameters. The present proof does not use the formerly developed, rather involved algebraic techniques, instead it employs exclusively dynamical methods and tools from geometric analysis.
Deviation of ergodic sums is studied for substitution dynamical systems with a matrix that admits eigenvalues of modulus 1. We consider the corresponding eigenfunctions, and in Theorem 1.1 we prove that the limit inferior of the ergodic sums is bounded for every point in the phase space. In Theorem 1.2, we prove existence of limit distributions along certain exponential subsequences of times for substitutions of constant length. Under additional assumptions, we prove that ergodic integrals satisfy the Central Limit Theorem (Theorem 1.3, Theorem 1.9).
We study Tonelli Lagrangian systems on the 2-torus in energy levels above Mañé's strict critical value and analyize the structure of global minimizers in the spirit of Morse, Hedlund and Bangert. In the case where the topological entropy of the Euler-Lagrange flow on the fixed energy level vanishes, we show that there are invariant tori for all rotation vectors indicating integrable-like behavior on a large scale. On the other hand, using a construction of Katok, we give examples of reversible Finsler geodesic flows with vanishing topological entropy, but having ergodic components of positive …
Ergodic properties of a renormalization procedure for studying the 1/2-discrepancy sums driven by rotations are studied, with corresponding implications for almost-sure bounds on the growth rates for these discrepancy sums.
Let $x \mapsto x+ α$ be a rotation on the circle and let $φ$ be a step function. We denote by $φ\_n (x)$ the corresponding ergodic sums $\sum\_{j=0}^{n-1} φ(x+j α)$. Under an assumption on $α$, for example when $α$ has bounded partial quotients, and a Diophantine condition on the discontinuity points of $φ$, we show that $φ\_n/\|φ\_n\|\_2$ is asymptotically Gaussian for $n$ in a set of density 1. The method is based on decorrelation inequalities for the ergodic sums taken at times $q\_k$, where the $q\_k$'s are the denominators of $α$.
We consider a conservative ergodic measure-preserving transformation $T$ of a $σ$-finite measure space $(X,\mathcal{B},μ)$ with $μ(X)=\infty$. Given an observable $f:X\to \mathbb{R}$ we study the almost sure asymptotic behaviour of the Birkhoff sums $S_Nf(x) := \sum_{j=1}^N\, (f\circ T^{j-1})(x)$. In infinite ergodic theory it is well known that the asymptotic behaviour of $S_Nf(x)$ strongly depends on the point $x\in X$, and if $f\in L^1(X,μ)$, then there exists no real valued sequence $(b(N))$ such that $\lim_{N\to\infty} S_Nf(x)/b(N)=1$ almost surely. In this paper we show that for dynamica…
