We consider area--preserving diffeomorphisms on tori with zero entropy. We classify ergodic area--preserving diffeomorphisms of the 3--torus for which the sequence $\{Df^n\}_{n\in{\Bbb N}}$ has polynomial growth. Roughly speaking, the main theorem says that every ergodic area--preserving $C^2$--diffeomorphism with polynomial uniform growth of the derivative is $C^2$--conjugate to a 2--steps skew product of the form \[\tor^3\ni(x_1,x_2,x_3)\mapsto (x_1+α,\ep x_2+β(x_1),x_3+γ(x_1,x_2))\in\tor^3,\] where $\ep=\pm 1$. We also indicate why there is no 4--dimensional analogue of the above result. Random diffeomorphisms on the 2--torus are studied as well.
We show that partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms of $d$-dimensional tori isotopic to an Anosov diffeomorphism, where the isotopy is contained in the set of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms, are dynamically coherent. Moreover, we show a \textit{global stability result}, i.e. every partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism as above is \textit{leaf-conjugate} to the linear one. As a consequence, we obtain intrinsic ergodicity and measure equivalence for partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional center direction that are isotopic to Anosov diffeomorphisms through such a path.
A smooth diffeomorphism f of a smooth closed orientable manifold M is cohomology-free diffeomorphism (c.f) if for each smooth function g on M there exists a smooth function h on M and a constant c such that h-h o f = g. In this article we show that (c.f) diffeomorphisms on tori are conjugate to Diophantine translations. This is part of a conjecture of A. Katok [H, Problem 17].
We prove that if $n\geq 2$, then there is no $C^1$-diffeomorphism $f$ of $n$-torus, such that $f$ is semi-conjugate to a minimal translation and its wandering domains are geometric balls. This improves a recent result of A. Navas, who proved it assuming $C^{n+1}$ regularity of $f$.
Let $f$ be an Anosov diffeomorphism of the $n$-dimensional torus ${\mathbb{T}}^n$ and $τ$ a continuous self-mapping of ${\mathbb{T}}^n$ commuting with $f$. We prove that $τ$ is surjective if and only if the restriction of $τ$ to each homoclinicity class of $f$ is injective.
We show how an object from the combinatorially geometric version of the analytical number theory, namely geometric continued fractions, appears in the classical smooth dynamics, namely in the problem on the topological classification of Anosov diffeomorphisms of tori.
Let $L$ be a hyperbolic automorphism of $\mathbb T^d$, $d\ge3$. We study the smooth conjugacy problem in a small $C^1$-neighborhood $\mathcal U$ of $L$. The main result establishes $C^{1+ν}$ regularity of the conjugacy between two Anosov systems with the same periodic eigenvalue data. We assume that these systems are $C^1$-close to an irreducible linear hyperbolic automorphism $L$ with simple real spectrum and that they satisfy a natural transitivity assumption on certain intermediate foliations. We elaborate on the example of de la Llave of two Anosov systems on $\mathbb T^4$ with the same co…
We consider the rotation number $ρ(t)$ of a diffeomorphism $f_t=R_t\circ f$, where $R_t$ is the rotation by $t$ and $f$ is an orientation preserving $C^\infty$ diffeomorphism of the circle $S^1$. We shall show that if $ρ(t)$ is irrational $$\limsup_{t'\to t}(ρ(t')-ρ(t))/(t'-t)\geq 1.$$
We prove that if d is an integer number bigger than 1 and f_1,...,f_d are commuting circle diffeomorphisms respectively of class C^(1+τ_k), where τ_1 + ... + τ_k > 1, then these maps are simultaneously conjugate to rotations provided that their rotation numbers are independent over the rationals.
A smooth diffeomorphism is said to be distributionally uniquely ergodic (DUE for short) when it is uniquely ergodic and its unique invariant probability measure is the only invariant distribution (up to multiplication by a constant). Ergodic translations on tori are classical examples of DUE diffeomorphisms. In this article we construct DUE diffeomorphisms supported on closed manifolds different from tori, providing some counterexamples to a conjecture proposed by Forni in [For08].
We show that any weakly partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism on the 2-torus may be realized as the dynamics on a center-stable or center-unstable torus of a 3-dimensional strongly partially hyperbolic system. We also construct examples of center-stable and center-unstable tori in higher dimensions.
Let M be a closed orientable irreducible 3-manifold, and let f be a diffeomorphism over M. We call an embedded 2-torus T an Anosov torus if it is invariant and the induced action of f over π_1(T) is hyperbolic. We prove that only few irreducible 3-manifolds admit Anosov tori: (1) the 3-torus, (2) the mapping torus of -id, and (3) the mapping torus of hyperbolic automorphisms of the 2-torus. This has consequences for instance in the context of partially hyperbolic dynamics of 3-manifolds: if there is an invariant center-unstable foliation, then it cannot have compact leaves [19]. This has lead …
Let $d\geq 2$ be an integer and let $ω_1,\cdots ,ω_d$ be moduli of continuity in a specified class which contains the moduli of Hölder continuity. Let $f_k$, $k\in\{1,\cdots,d\}$, be $C^{1+ω_k}$ orientation preserving diffeomorphisms of the circle and $f_1,\cdots, f_d$ commute with each other. We prove that if the rotation numbers of $f_k$'s are independent over the rationals and $ω_1(t)\cdotsω_d(t)=tω(t)$ with $\lim_{t\rightarrow 0^+}ω(t)=0$, then $f_1,\cdots,f_d$ are simultaneously (topologically) conjugate to rigid rotations.
We prove that every smooth action of Z^k, k>1, on the (k+1)-dimensional torus homotopic to an action by hyperbolic linear maps preserves an absolutely continuous measure. This is a first known result concerning abelian groups of diffeomorphisms where existence of an invariant geometric structure is obtained from homotopy data.
We study the projective derivative as a cocycle of Möbius transformations over groups of circle diffeomorphisms. By computing precise expressions for this cocycle, we obtain several results about reducibility and almost reducibility to a cocycle of rotations. We also introduce an extension of this cocycle to the diagonal action on the 3-torus for which we generalize the previous results.
In this paper, we investigate the ergodic and rigidity properties of weakly hyperbolic group actions. Motivated by classical theorems describing Anosov diffeomorphisms, we obtain two main results: First, all C^2 volume preserving weakly hyperbolic actions on closed manifolds are ergodic. This result generalizes Anosov's classical theorem on ergodicity of Anosov diffeomorphisms to the wider class of weakly hyperbolic group actions. To state the second main result, suppose that A denotes a weakly hyperbolic action of a higher rank lattice (such as SL(n,Z) for n>2) by C^2 volume preserving diffeo…
We show that a $C^{1+bv}$ circle diffeomorphism with absolutely continuous derivative and irrational rotation number can be conjugated to diffeomorphisms that are $C^{1+bv}$ arbitrary close to the corresponding rotation. This improves a theorem of M.~Herman, who established the same result but starting with a $C^2$ diffeomorphism. We prove that the same holds for countable Abelian groups of circle diffeomorphisms acting freely, a result that is new even in the $C^{\infty}$ context. Related results and examples concerning the asymptotic distortion of diffeomorphisms are presented. Along this pa…
We describe the way in which the sign of the Schwarzian derivative for a family of diffeomorphisms of the interval $I$ affects the dynamics of an associated many-to-one skew product map of the cylinder $(\R/\Z)\times I$.
Given a diffeomorphism of the interval, consider the uniform norm of the derivative of its n-th iteration. We get a sequence of real numbers called the growth sequence. Its asymptotic behavior is an invariant which naturally appears both in smooth dynamics and in geometry of the diffeomorphisms groups. We find sharp estimates for the growth sequence of a given diffeomorphism in terms of the modulus of continuity of its derivative. These estimates extend previous results of Polterovich and Sodin, and Borichev.
It is well-known that it is possible to construct a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism on the 3-torus in a similar way than in Kan's example. It has two hyperbolic physical measures with intermingled basins supported on two embedded tori with Anosov dynamics. A natural question is how robust is the intermingled basins phenomenon for diffeomorphisms defined on boundaryless manifolds? In this work we will show that on the 3-torus the only partially hyperbolic examples having hyperbolic physical measures with intermingled basins are not robust.
We consider C^r-diffeomorphisms of a compact smooth manifold having a pair of robust heterodimensional cycles where r is a positive integer or infinity. We prove that if certain conditions about the signatures of non-linearities and Schwarzian derivatives of the transition maps are satisfied, then by giving C^r arbitrarily small perturbation, we can produce a periodic point at which the first return map in the center direction is C^r-flat. As a consequence, we will prove that C^r-generic diffeomorphisms in the neighborhood of the initial diffeomorphism exhibit super-exponential growth of numbe…
Let $Y=(f,g,h):\mathbb{R}^{3} \to \mathbb{R}^{3}$ be a $C^{2}$ map and let $\spec(Y)$ denote the set of eigenvalues of the derivative $DY_p$, when $p$ varies in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We begin proving that if, for some $ε>0,$ $\spec(Y)\cap (-ε,ε)=\emptyset,$ then the foliation $\mathcal{F}(k),$ with $k\in \{f,g,h\},$ made up by the level surfaces $\{k={\rm constant}\},$ consists just of planes. As a consequence, we prove a bijectivity result related to the three-dimensional case of Jelonek's Jacobian Conjecture for polynomial maps of $\mathbb{R}^n.$
We consider a family of Schrödinger equations with unbounded Hamiltonian quadratic nonlinearities on a generic tori of dimension $d\geq1$. We study the behaviour of high Sobolev norms $H^{s}$, $s\gg1$, of solutions with initial conditions in $H^{s}$ whose $H^ρ$-Sobolev norm, $1\llρ\ll s$, is smaller than $\e\ll1$. We provide a control of the $H^{s}$-norm over a time interval of order $O(\e^{-2})$. %where $\e\ll1$ is the size of the initial condition in $H^ρ$. Due to the lack of conserved quantities controlling high Sobolev norms, the key ingredient of the proof is the construction of a modifie…
We study the regularity of exceptional actions of groups by $C^{1,α}$ diffeomorphisms on the circle, i.e. ones which admit exceptional minimal sets, and whose elements have first derivatives that are continuous with concave modulus of continuity $α$. Let $G$ be a finitely generated group admitting a $C^{1,α}$ action $ρ$ with a free orbit on the circle, and such that the logarithms of derivatives of group elements are uniformly bounded at some point of the circle. We prove that if $G$ has spherical growth bounded by $c n^{d-1}$ and if the function $1/α^d$ is integrable near zero, then under som…
We prove that any perturbation of the symplectic part of the derivative of a Poisson diffeomorphism can be realized as the derivative of a $C^1$-close Poisson diffeomorphism. We also show that a similar property holds for the Poincaré map of a Hamiltonian on a Poisson manifold. These results are the conservative counterparts of the Franks lemma, a perturbation tool used in several contexts most notably in the theory of smooth dynamical systems.
