We study the rate of growth of ergodic sums along a sequence (a_n) of times: S_N f(x)=f(T^{a_1}x) + ... + f(T^{a_N}x). We characterize the maximal rate of growth of these ergodic sums and identify a number of sequences such as (2^n) that achieve this rate of growth.
We also return to Khintchine's strong uniform distribution Conjecture which stated that the averages (1/N)(f(x)+f(2x mod 1)+...+f(Nx mod 1)) converge pointwise almost everywhere to \int f for an integrable function on [0,1). We give an elementary counterexample to this conjecture, showing that divergence occurs at the maximal rate. In addition, we consider versions of Khintchine's conjecture in which the sequence of positive integers is replaced by the increasing enumeration of a subsemigroup of the positive integers. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on the semigroup for convergence in the modified conjecture.
We show that there exists a universal gap in the failure of the ergodic theorem for symmetric Birkhoff sums in infinite ergodic theory. In addition, an application of this result to a question of fluctuations of the Birkhoff integrals of horocyclic flows on geometrically finite surfaces is given.
We prove some results on the behavior of infinite sums of the form $Σf\circ T^n(x)\frac{1}{n}$, where $T:S^1\to S^1$ is an irrational circle rotation and $f$ is a mean-zero function on $S^1$. In particular, we show that for a certain class of functions $f$, there are Liouville $α$ for which this sum diverges everywhere. We also show that there are Liouville $α$ for which the sum converges everywhere.
In this expository paper, we survey nowadays classical tools or criteria used in problems of convergence everywhere to build counterexamples: the Stein continuity principle, Bourgain's entropy criteria and Kakutani-Rochlin lemma, most classical device for these questions in ergodic theory. First, we state a $L^1$-version of the continuity principle and give an example of its usefulness by applying it to some famous problem on divergence almost everywhere of Fourier series. Next we particularly focus on entropy criteria in $L^p$, $2\le p\le \infty$ and provide detailed proofs. We also study the…
A classical fact in ergodic theory is that ergodicity is equivalent to almost everywhere divergence of ergodic sums of all nonnegative integrable functions which are not identically zero. We show two methods, one in the measure preserving case and one in the nonsingular case, which enable one to prove this criteria by checking it on a dense collection of functions and then extending it to all nonnegative functions. The first method is then used in a new proof of a folklore criterion for ergodicity of Poisson suspensions which does not make any reference to Fock spaces. The second method which …

Masur showed that a Teichmuller geodesic that is recurrent in the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces is necessarily determined by a quadratic differential with a uniquely ergodic vertical foliation. In this paper, we show that a divergent Teichmuller geodesic satisfying a certain slow rate of divergence is also necessarily determined by a quadratic differential with unique ergodic vertical foliation. As an application, we sketch a proof of a complete characterization of the set of nonergodic directions in any double cover of the flat torus branched over two points.
The well-known Jewett-Krieger's Theorem states that each ergodic system has a strictly ergodic model. Strengthening the model by requiring that it is strictly ergodic under some group actions, and building the connection of the new model with the convergence of pointwise non-conventional ergodic averages we prove that for an ergodic system $(X,\X,μ, T)$, $d\in\N$, $f_1, \ldots, f_d \in L^{\infty}(μ)$, %and any tempered F{\rm $ø$}lner sequence $F_n$ of $\Z^2$, the averages \begin{equation*} \frac{1}{N^2} \sum_{(n,m)\in F_N} f_1(T^nx)f_2(T^{n+m}x)\ldots f_d(T^{n+(d-1)m}x) \end{equation*} converg…
Masur's divergence states that the horizontal foliation of translation surfaces is uniquely ergodic if the geodesic flow is recurrent on the moduli space. This established a relationship between geometrical properties of foliations and the dynamics on the moduli space. In this paper, we extend this theorem to complex torus and Kummer surfaces. We define and calculate horizontal foliations and the corresponding geodesic flow in the moduli space of Kähler metrics and prove that the horizontal foliation is uniquely ergodic if the geodesic flow is recurrent. We also find the a necessary algebraic …
We consider multilinear averages in ergodic theory and harmonic analysis and prove their divergence in some range of $L^p$ spaces, with $p$ close enough to 1. We also prove that the trilinear Hilbert transform is unbounded in a similar range of $L^p$ spaces.
In this paper we study aspects of the ergodic theory of the geodesic flow on a non-compact negatively curved manifold. It is a well known fact that every continuous potential on a compact metric space has a maximizing measure. Unfortunately, for non-compact spaces this fact is not longer true. For the geodesic flow we provide a criterion that ensures the existence of a maximizing measure for uniformly continuous potentials. We prove that the only obstruction to the existence of a maximizing measure is the full escape of mass phenomenon. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first general r…
Let $(X,μ)$ be a probability space, $G$ a countable amenable group and $(F_n)_n$ a left Følner sequence in $G$. This paper analyzes the non-conventional ergodic averages \[\frac{1}{|F_n|}\sum_{g \in F_n}\prod_{i=1}^d (f_i\circ T_1^g\cdots T_i^g)\] associated to a commuting tuple of $μ$-preserving actions $T_1$, ..., $T_d:G\curvearrowright X$ and $f_1$, ..., $f_d \in L^\infty(μ)$. We prove that these averages always converge in $\|\cdot\|_2$, and that they witness a multiple recurrence phenomenon when $f_1 = \ldots = f_d = 1_A$ for a non-negligible set $A\subseteq X$. This proves a conjecture o…
We establish convergence in norm and pointwise almost everywhere for the non-conventional (in the sense of Furstenberg) bilinear polynomial ergodic averages \[ A_N(f,g)(x) := \frac{1}{N} \sum_{n =1}^N f(T^nx) g(T^{P(n)}x)\] as $N \to \infty$, where $T \colon X \to X$ is a measure-preserving transformation of a $σ$-finite measure space $(X,μ)$, $P(\mathrm{n}) \in \mathbb Z[\mathrm{n}]$ is a polynomial of degree $d \geq 2$, and $f \in L^{p_1}(X), \ g \in L^{p_2}(X)$ for some $p_1,p_2 > 1$ with $\frac{1}{p_1} + \frac{1}{p_2} \leq 1$. We also establish an $r$-variational inequality for these avera…
A universally L^1 good sequence n_k is constructed with n_{k+1}-n_k tending to infinity. For ergodic transformations non-conventional ergodic averages of L^1 functions computed by using this sequence converge to the integral of the function.
We generalise the average asymptotic linking number of a pair of divergence-free vector fields on homology three-spheres by considering the linking of a divergence-free vector field on a manifold of arbitrary dimension with a codimension two foliation endowed with an invariant transverse measure. We prove that the average asymptotic linking number is given by an integral of Hopf type. Considering appropriate vector fields and measured foliations, we obtain an ergodic interpretation of the Godbillon-Vey invariant of a family of codimension one foliations discussed in math.GT/0111137.
We study convergence of ergodic averages along squares with polynomial weights. For a given polynomial $P\in \mathbb{Z}[\cdot]$, consider the set of all $θ\in[0,1)$ such that for every aperiodic system $(X,μ, T)$ there is a function $f\in L^1(X,μ)$ such that the weighted averages along squares $$ {\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N} e(P(n)θ)T^{n^2}f $$ diverge on a set with positive measure. We show that this set is residual and includes the rational numbers as well as a dense set of Liouville numbers. This on one hand extends the divergence result for squares in $L^1$ of the first author and Mauldin and…
Suppose that G is a compact Abelian topological group, m is the Haar measure on G and f is a measurable function. Given (n_k), a strictly monotone increasing sequence of integers we consider the nonconventional ergodic/Birkhoff averages M_N^αf(x). The f-rotation set is Gamma_f={α\in G: M_N^α f(x) converges for m a.e. x as N\to \infty .} We prove that if G is a compact locally connected Abelian group and f: G -> R is a measurable function then from m(Gamma_f)>0 it follows that f \in L^1(G). A similar result is established for ordinary Birkhoff averages if G=Z_{p}, the group of p-adic integers. …
