In this expository paper, we survey nowadays classical tools or criteria used in problems of convergence everywhere to build counterexamples: the Stein continuity principle, Bourgain's entropy criteria and Kakutani-Rochlin lemma, most classical device for these questions in ergodic theory. First, we state a $L^1$-version of the continuity principle and give an example of its usefulness by applying it to some famous problem on divergence almost everywhere of Fourier series. Next we particularly focus on entropy criteria in $L^p$, $2\le p\le \infty$ and provide detailed proofs. We also study the link between the associated maximal operators and the canonical Gaussian process on $L^2$. We further study the corresponding criterion in $L^p$, $1<p<2$ using properties of $p$-stable processes. Finally we consider Kakutani-Rochlin's lemma, one of the most frequently used tool in ergodic theory, by stating and proving a criterion for a.e. divergence of weighted ergodic averages.
We show that for almost every (with respect to Masur-Veech measure) $ω\in \mathcal{H}(2)$, the set of angles $θ\in [0, 2π)$ so that $e^{iθ}ω$ has non-uniquely ergodic vertical foliation has Hausdorff dimension (and codimension) $1/2$.
We prove some results on the behavior of infinite sums of the form $Σf\circ T^n(x)\frac{1}{n}$, where $T:S^1\to S^1$ is an irrational circle rotation and $f$ is a mean-zero function on $S^1$. In particular, we show that for a certain class of functions $f$, there are Liouville $α$ for which this sum diverges everywhere. We also show that there are Liouville $α$ for which the sum converges everywhere.
We consider ergodic series of the form $\sum_{n=0}^\infty a_n f(T^n x)$ where $f$ is an integrable function with zero mean value with respect to a $T$-invariant measure $μ$. Under certain conditions on the dynamical system $T$, the invariant measure $μ$ and the function $f$, we prove that the series converges $μ$-almost everywhere if and only if $\sum_{n=0}^\infty |a_n|^2<\infty$, and that in this case the sum of the convergent series is exponentially integrable and satisfies a Khintchine type inequality. We also prove that the system $\{f\circ T^n\}$ is a Riesz system if and only if the spect…
We study pointwise convergence of entangled averages of the form \[ \frac{1}{N^k}\sum_{1\leq n_1,\ldots, n_k\leq N} T_m^{n_{α(m)}}A_{m-1}T^{n_{α(m-1)}}_{m-1}\ldots A_2T_2^{n_{α(2)}}A_1T_1^{n_{α(1)}} f, \] where $f\in L^2(X,μ)$, $α:\left\{1,\ldots,m\right\}\to\left\{1,\ldots,k\right\}$, and the $T_i$ are ergodic measure preserving transformations on the standard probability space $(X,μ)$. We show that under some joint boundedness and twisted compactness conditions on the pairs $(A_i,T_i)$, almost everywhere convergence holds for all $f\in L^2$. We also present results for the general $L^p$ case…
We show that there exists a universal gap in the failure of the ergodic theorem for symmetric Birkhoff sums in infinite ergodic theory. In addition, an application of this result to a question of fluctuations of the Birkhoff integrals of horocyclic flows on geometrically finite surfaces is given.
A celebrated result by Bourgain and Wierdl states that ergodic averages along primes converge almost everywhere for $L^p$-functions, $p>1$, with a polynomial version by Wierdl and Nair. Using an anti-correlation result for the von Mangoldt function due to Green and Tao we observe everywhere convergence of such averages for nilsystems and continuous functions.
We study the rate of growth of ergodic sums along a sequence (a_n) of times: S_N f(x)=f(T^{a_1}x) + ... + f(T^{a_N}x). We characterize the maximal rate of growth of these ergodic sums and identify a number of sequences such as (2^n) that achieve this rate of growth. We also return to Khintchine's strong uniform distribution Conjecture which stated that the averages (1/N)(f(x)+f(2x mod 1)+...+f(Nx mod 1)) converge pointwise almost everywhere to \int f for an integrable function on [0,1). We give an elementary counterexample to this conjecture, showing that divergence occurs at the maximal rate.…
A classical fact in ergodic theory is that ergodicity is equivalent to almost everywhere divergence of ergodic sums of all nonnegative integrable functions which are not identically zero. We show two methods, one in the measure preserving case and one in the nonsingular case, which enable one to prove this criteria by checking it on a dense collection of functions and then extending it to all nonnegative functions. The first method is then used in a new proof of a folklore criterion for ergodicity of Poisson suspensions which does not make any reference to Fock spaces. The second method which …
In this work we introduce the notion of weak quasigroups, that are quasigroup operations defined almost everywhere on some set. Then we prove that the topological entropy and the ergodic period of an invertible expansive ergodically supported dynamical system $(X,T)$ with the shadowing property establishes a sufficient criterion for the existence of quasigroup operations defined almost everywhere outside of universally null sets and for which $T$ is an automorphism. Furthermore, we find a decomposition of the dynamics of $T$ in terms of $T$-invariant weak topological subquasigroups.

Masur showed that a Teichmuller geodesic that is recurrent in the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces is necessarily determined by a quadratic differential with a uniquely ergodic vertical foliation. In this paper, we show that a divergent Teichmuller geodesic satisfying a certain slow rate of divergence is also necessarily determined by a quadratic differential with unique ergodic vertical foliation. As an application, we sketch a proof of a complete characterization of the set of nonergodic directions in any double cover of the flat torus branched over two points.
Denote by $Γ$ the set of pointwise good sequences. Those are sequences of real numbers $(a_k)$ such that for any measure preserving flow $(U_t)_{t\in \mathbb R}$ on a probability space and for any $f\in L^\infty$, the averages $\frac{1}{n} \sum_{k=1}^{n} f(U_{a_k}x) $ converge almost everywhere. We prove the following two results. [1.] If $f: (0,\infty)\to\mathbb R$ is continuous and if $\big(f(ku+v)\big)_{k\geq 1}\inΓ$ for all $u, v>0$, then $f$ is a polynomial on some subinterval $J\subset (0,\infty)$ of positive length. [2.] If $f: [0,\infty)\to\mathbb R$ is real analytic and if $\big(f(ku)…
In this paper, we study various aspects of the ODE's flow $X$ solution to the equation $\partial_t X(t,x)=b(X(t,x))$, $X(0,x)=x$ in the $d$-dimensional torus $Y_d$, where $b$ is a regular $\mathbb{Z}^d$-periodic vector field from $\mathbb{R}^d$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$.We present an original and complete picture in any dimension of all logical connections between the following seven conditions involving the field $b$: (i) the everywhere asymptotics of the flow $X$, (ii) the almost-everywhere asymptotics of the flow $X$, (iii) the global rectification of the vector field $b$ in $Y_d$, (iv) the ergodic…
We study generic holomorphic families of dynamical systems presenting problems of small divisors with fixed arithmetic. We prove that we have convergence for all parameter values or divergence everywhere except for an exceptional set in the potential theory sense. We illustrate this general principle in different problems of small divisors.
Let $a_n$ be the random increasing sequence of natural numbers which takes each value independently with decreasing probability of order $n^{-α}$, $0 < α< 1/2$. We prove that, almost surely, for every measure-preserving system $(X,T)$ and every $f \in L^1(X)$ orthogonal to the invariant factor, the modulated, random averages \[ \sup_{b} \Big| \frac{1}{N} \sum_{n = 1}^N b(n) T^{a_{n}} f \Big| \] converge to $0$ pointwise almost everywhere, where the supremum is taken over a set of bounded functions with certain uniform approximation properties.
We present some twisted compactness conditions for almost everywhere convergence of one-parameter entangled ergodic averages of Dunford-Schwartz operators $T_0,\ldots, T_a$ on a Borel probability space of the form $$ \sum_{n=1}^N T_a^n A_{a-1}T_{a-1}^nA_{a-1}\cdot \ldots \cdot A_0 T_0^nf$$ for $f\in L^p(X,μ)$, $p\geq 1$. We also discuss examples and present a continuous version of the result.
Masur's divergence states that the horizontal foliation of translation surfaces is uniquely ergodic if the geodesic flow is recurrent on the moduli space. This established a relationship between geometrical properties of foliations and the dynamics on the moduli space. In this paper, we extend this theorem to complex torus and Kummer surfaces. We define and calculate horizontal foliations and the corresponding geodesic flow in the moduli space of Kähler metrics and prove that the horizontal foliation is uniquely ergodic if the geodesic flow is recurrent. We also find the a necessary algebraic …
The classical theorem of Birkhoff states that the $T^N f(x) = (1/N)\sum_{k=0}^{N-1} f(σ^k x)$ converges almost everywhere for $x\in X$ and $f\in L^{1}(X)$, where $σ$ is a measure preserving transformation of a probability measure space $X$. It was shown that there are operators of the form $T^N f(x)=(1/N)\sum_{k=0}^{N-1}f(σ^{n_k}x)$ for a subsequence $\{n_k\}$ of the positive integers that converge in some $L^p$ spaces while diverging in others. The topic of this talk will examine this phenomenon in the class of Orlicz spaces $\{L{Log}^βL:β>0\}$.
Let $a_n$ be the random increasing sequence of natural numbers which takes each value independently with probability $n^{-a}$, $0 < a < 1/2$, and let $p(n) = n^{1+ε}$, $0 < ε< 1$. We prove that, almost surely, for every measure-preserving system $(X,T)$ and every $f \in L^1(X)$ the modulated, random averages \[ \frac{1}{N} \sum_{n = 1}^N e(p(n)) T^{a_n(ω)} f\] converge to $0$ pointwise almost everywhere.
Extending a result by Chilin and Litvinov, we show by construction that given any $σ$-finite infinite measure space $(Ω,\mathcal{A}, μ)$ and a function $f\in L^1(Ω)+L^\infty(Ω)$ with $μ(\{|f|>\varepsilon\})=\infty$ for some $\varepsilon>0$, there exists a Dunford-Schwartz operator $T$ over $(Ω,\mathcal{A}, μ)$ such that $\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N (T^nf)(x)$ fails to converge for almost every $x\inΩ$. In addition, for each operator we construct, the set of functions for which pointwise convergence fails almost everywhere is residual in $L^1(Ω)+L^\infty(Ω)$.
We study the problem of lifting a measure to an induced map $F(x)=f^{R(x)}(x)$. In particular, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for an ergodic $f$ invariant probability $μ$ to be $F$-liftable as well as a condition for the lift to be an ergodic measure. Moreover, we show that every lift of $μ$ is a weighted average of the restriction of $μ$ to a countable number of $F$-ergodic components. We introduce the concept of a coherent schedule of events and relate it to the lift problem. As a consequence, we prove that we can always synchronize coherent schedules at almost every point with…
We establish pointwise almost everywhere convergence for ergodic averages along polynomial sequences in nilpotent groups of step two of measure-preserving transformations on $σ$-finite measure spaces. We also establish corresponding maximal inequalities on $L^p$ for $1<p\leq \infty$ and $ρ$-variational inequalities on $L^2$ for $2<ρ<\infty$. This gives an affirmative answer to the Furstenberg-Bergelson-Leibman conjecture in the linear case for all polynomial ergodic averages in discrete nilpotent groups of step two. Our proof is based on almost-orthogonality techniques that go far beyond Fouri…
We consider multilinear averages in ergodic theory and harmonic analysis and prove their divergence in some range of $L^p$ spaces, with $p$ close enough to 1. We also prove that the trilinear Hilbert transform is unbounded in a similar range of $L^p$ spaces.
We study ternary sequences associated with a multidimensional continued fraction algorithm introduced by the first author. The algorithm is defined by two matrices and we show that it is measurably isomorphic to the shift on the set $\{1,2\}^\mathbb{N}$ of directive sequences. For a given set $\mathcal{C}$ of two substitutions, we show that there exists a $\mathcal{C}$-adic sequence for every vector of letter frequencies or, equivalently, for every directive sequence. We show that their factor complexity is at most $2n+1$ and is $2n+1$ if and only if the letter frequencies are rationally indep…
In this paper we prove a general convergence theorem for almost-additive set functions on unimodular, amenable groups. These mappings take their values in some Banach space. By extending the theory of epsilon-quasi tiling techniques, we set the ground for far-reaching applications in the theory of group dynamics. In particular, we verify the almost-everywhere convergence of abstract approximable bounded, additive processes, as well as a Banach space approximation result for the spectral distribution function (integrated density of states) for random operators on discrete structures in a metric…
This survey paper is based on a talk given at the 44th Summer Symposium in Real Analysis in Paris. This line of research was initiated by a question of Haight and Weizsäker concerning almost everywhere convergence properties of series of the form $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}f(nx)$. A more general, additive version of this problem is the following: Suppose $Λ$ is a discrete infinite set of nonnegative real numbers. We say that $ Λ$ is of type 1 if the series $s(x)=\sum_{λ\inΛ}f(x+λ)$ satisfies a zero-one law. This means that for any non-negative measurable $f: {\mathbb R}\to [0,+ {\infty})$ either the …
The theorem of Shannon-McMillan-Breiman states that for every generating partition on an ergodic system of finite entropy the exponential decay rate of the measure of cylinder sets equals the metric entropy almost everywhere. In addition the measure of $n$-cylinders is in various settings known to be lognormally distributed in the limit. In this paper the logarithm of the measure of $n$-cylinder, the information function, satisfies the almost sure invariance principle in the case in which the measure is $β$-mixing. We get a similar result for the recurrence time. Previous results are due to Ph…
