In 1944 Dyson defined the rank of a partition as the largest part minus the number of parts, and conjectured that the residue of the rank mod 5 divides the partitions of 5n+4 into five equal classes. This gave a combinatorial explanation of Ramanujan's famous partition congruence mod 5. He made an analogous conjecture for the rank mod 7 and the partitions of 7n+5. In 1954 Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer proved Dyson's rank conjectures by constructing several Lambert-series identities basically using the theory of elliptic functions. In 2016 the author gave another proof using the theory of weak harmonic Maass forms. In this paper we describe a new and more elementary approach using Hecke-Rogers series.
We study the Dyson rank function $N(r,3;n)$, the number of partitions of $n$ with rank $\equiv r \pmod 3$. We investigate the convexity of these functions. We extend $N(r,3;n)$ multiplicatively to the set of partitions, and we determine the maximum value when taken over all partitions of size $n$.
In this paper we prove a longstanding conjecture by Freeman Dyson concerning the limiting shape of the crank generating function. We fit this function in a more general family of inverse theta functions which play a key role in physics.
In a series of papers the first author and Ono connected the rank, a partition statistic introduced by Dyson, to weak Maass forms, a new class of functions which are related to modular forms. Naturally it is of wide interest to find other explicit examples of Maass forms. Here we construct a new infinite family of such forms, arising from overpartitions. As applications we obtain combinatorial decompositions of Ramanujan-type congruences for overpartitions as well as the modularity of rank differences in certain arithmetic progressions.
At the 1987 Ramanujan Centenary meeting Dyson asked for a coherent group-theoretical structure for Ramanujan's mock theta functions analogous to Hecke's theory of modular forms. Many of Ramanujan's mock theta functions can be written in terms of $R(ζ,q)$, where $R(z,q)$ is the two-variable generating function of Dyson's rank function and $ζ$ is a root of unity. Building on earlier work of Watson, Zwegers, Gordon and McIntosh, and motivated by Dyson's question, Bringmann, Ono and Rhoades studied transformation properties of $R(ζ,q)$. In this paper we strengthen and extend the results of Bringma…
Denote by $p(n)$ the number of partitions of $n$ and by $N(a,M;n)$ the number of partitions of $n$ with rank congruent to $a$ modulo $M$. We find and prove a general formula for Dyson's ranks by considering the deviation of the ranks from the average: \begin{equation*} D(a,M) := \sum_{n= 0}^{\infty}\left(N(a,M;n) - \frac{p(n)}{M}\right) q^n. \end{equation*} Using Appell--Lerch sum properties we decompose $D(a,M)$ into modular and mock modular parts so that the mock modular component is supported on certain arithmetic progressions, whose modulus we can control. Using our decomposition, we show …
The Dyson rank of an integer partition is the difference between its largest part and the number of parts it contains. Using Fine-Dyson symmetry, we give formulas for the number of partitions of n with rank larger than n/2, and we prove identities for counts of partitions with large rank in fixed residue classes.
Ramanujan's congruence $p(5k+4) \equiv 0 \pmod 5$ led Dyson \cite{dyson} to conjecture the existence of a measure "rank" such that $p(5k+4)$ partitions of $5k+4$ could be divided into sub-classes with equal cardinality to give a direct proof of Ramanujan's congruence. The notion of rank was extended to rank differences by Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer \cite{atkin}, who proved Dyson's conjecture. More recently, Mao proved several equalities and inequalities, leaving some as conjectures, for rank differences for partitions modulo 10 \cite{mao10} and for $M_2$ rank differences for partitions with no …
Let spt(n) denote the total number of appearances of smallest parts in the partitions of n. Recently, Andrews showed how spt(n) is related to the second rank moment, and proved some surprising Ramanujan-type congruences mod 5, 7 and 13. We prove a generalization of these congruences using known relations between rank and crank moments. We obtain explicit Ramanujan-type congruences for spt(n) mod p for p = 11, 17, 19, 29, 31 and 37. Recently, Bringmann and Ono proved that Dyson's rank function has infinitely many Ramanujan-type congruences. Their proof is non-constructive and utilizes the theor…
Let $N_k(m,n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with Garvan $k$-rank $m$. It is well-known that Andrews-Garvan-Dyson's crank and Dyson's rank are the $k$-rank for $k=1$ and $k=2$, respectively. In this paper, we prove that the sequence $\{N_k(m,n)\}_{|m|\le n-k-71}$ is log-concave for all sufficiently large $n$ and each integer $k$. In particular, we partially solve the log-concavity conjecture for Andrews-Garvan-Dyson's crank and Dyson's rank, which was independently proposed by Bringmann-Jennings-Shaffer-Mahlburg and Ji-Zang.
The notion of the spt-crank of a vector partition, or an $S$-partition, was introduced by Andrews, Garvan and Liang. Let $N_S(m,n)$ denote the number of $S$-partitions of $n$ with spt-crank $m$. Andrews, Dyson and Rhoades conjectured that $\{N_S(m,n)\}_m$ is unimodal for any $n$, and they showed that this conjecture is equivalent to an inequality between the rank and the crank of ordinary partitions. They obtained an asymptotic formula for the difference between the rank and the crank of ordinary partitions, which implies $N_S(m,n)\geq N_S(m+1,n)$ for sufficiently large $n$ and fixed $m$. In t…
We study the Dyson rank function $N(r,t;n)$, the number of partitions with rank congruent to $r$ modulo $t$. We first show that it is monotonic in $n$, and then show that it equidistributed as $n \rightarrow \infty$. Using this result we prove a conjecture of Hou and Jagadeeson on the convexity of $N(r,t;n)$.
We generalize the generating series of the Dyson ranks and $M_2$-ranks of overpartitions to obtain $k$-fold variants, and give a combinatorial interpretation of each. The $k$-fold generating series correspond to the full ranks of two families of buffered Frobenius representations, which generalize Lovejoy's first and second Frobenius representations of overpartitions, respectively.
This is the final version of ANT-0142 ("An embedding approach to Dwork's conjecture"). It reduces the higher rank case of the conjecture over a general base variety to the rank one case over the affine space. The general rank one case is completed in ANT-0235 "Rank one case of Dwork's conjecture". Both papers will appear in JAMS.
Using an extension of Wright's version of the circle method, we obtain asymptotic formulae for partition ranks similar to formulae for partition cranks which where conjectured by F. Dyson and recently proved by the first author and K. Bringmann.
We utilize Dyson's concept of the adjoint of a partition to derive an infinite family of new polynomial analogues of Euler's Pentagonal Number Theorem. We streamline Dyson's bijection relating partitions with crank <= k and those with k in the Rank-Set of partitions. Also, we extend Dyson's adjoint of a partition to MacMahon's ``modular'' partitions with modulus 2. This way we find a new combinatorial proof of Gauss's famous identity. We give a direct combinatorial proof that for n>1 the partitions of n with crank k are equinumerous with partitions of n with crank -k.
By introducing $k$-marked Durfee symbols, Andrews found a combinatorial interpretation of $2k$-th symmetrized moment $η_{2k}(n)$ of ranks of partitions of $n$. Recently, Garvan introduced the $2k$-th symmetrized moment $μ_{2k}(n)$ of cranks of partitions of $n$ in the study of the higher-order spt-function $spt_k(n)$. In this paper, we give a combinatorial interpretation of $μ_{2k}(n)$. We introduce $k$-marked Dyson symbols based on a representation of ordinary partitions given by Dyson, and we show that $μ_{2k}(n)$ equals the number of $(k+1)$-marked Dyson symbols of $n$. We then introduce th…
Based on work of Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer on partition rank difference functions, and more recent work of Lovejoy and Osburn, Mao has proved several inequalities between partition ranks modulo $10$, and additional results modulo $6$ and $10$ for the $M_2$ rank of partitions without repeated odd parts. Mao conjectured some additional inequalities. We prove some of Mao's rank inequality conjectures for both the rank and the $M_2$ rank modulo $10$ using elementary methods.
Let E be an elliptic curve defined over a number field K. Michael Larsen conjectured that for any finitely generated subgroup G of Gal(\bar K/K), the Mordell-Weil rank of E is unbounded in number fields fixed by G. We prove that the conjecture holds over K=Q for both the analytic rank and the p-infinity Selmer rank of E for every odd prime p. For arbitrary E/K, we show that Larsen's conjecture follows from the standard conjectures for ranks of elliptic curves, provided K has a real place or E has non-integral j-invariant.
This paper proves the general rank one case of Dwork's conjecture over the affine space. It generalizes and improves the method of ANT-0141 "Dwork's conjecture on unit root zeta functions" (Ann. Math., 150(1999), 867-929). In addition, explicit information about the zeros and poles (along the Gouvêa-Mazur conjecture direction) for the unit root zeta function is obtained. The paper is to appear in JAMS.
Andrews, Dyson and Hickerson proved many interesting properties of coefficients for a Ramanujan's $q$-hypergeometric series by relating it to real quadratic field $\Q(\sqrt{6})$ and using the arithmetic of $\Q(\sqrt{6})$, hence solved a conjecture of Andrews on the distributions of its Fourier coefficients. Motivated by Andrews's conjecture, we discuss an interesting $q$-hypergeometric series which comes from a Lerch sum and rank and crank moments for partitions and overpartitions. We give Andrews-like conjectures for its coefficients. We obtain partial results on the distributions of small va…
Based on an equation for the rank of an elliptic surface over $\mathbb{Q}$ which appears in the work of Nagao, Rosen, and Silverman, we conjecture that 100% of elliptic surfaces have rank $0$ when ordered by the size of the coefficients of their Weierstrass equations, and present a probabilistic heuristic to justify this conjecture. We then discuss how it would follow from either understanding of certain $L$-functions, or from understanding of the local behaviour of the surfaces. Finally, we make a conjecture about ranks of elliptic surfaces over finite fields, and highlight some experimental …
We present an heuristic argument for the prediction of expected Mordell-Weil rank of elliptic curves over number fields, using Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer's original conjecture and Sato-Tate conjectures. We do calculations in some cases and raise questions about their relations, if any, with the predictions of various average rank models that have been considered.
In this article, we present the first half of our project on the Iwasawa theory of higher rank Galois deformations over deformations rings of arbitrary dimension. We develop a theory of Coleman maps for a very general class of coefficient rings, devise a dimension reduction procedure for locally restricted Euler systems and finally, put these into use in order to prove a divisibility in a 3-variable main conjecture for nearly ordinary families of Rankin-Selberg convolutions.
We conjecture that special elements associated with rank-one motives are obtained $p$-adically from Rubin-Stark elements by means of a precise `higher-rank Soulé twist' construction. We show this conjecture incorporates a variety of known results and existing predictions and also gives rise to a concrete strategy for proving the equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture for rank-one motives. We then use this approach to obtain new evidence in support of the equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture in the setting of CM abelian varieties.
We describe an algorithm to prove the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjectural formula for any given elliptic curve defined over the rational numbers of analytic rank zero or one. With computer assistance we have proved the formula for 16714 of the 16725 such curves of conductor less than 5000.
We show that Lang's conjecture on error terms in Diophantine approximation implies Honda's conjecture on ranks of elliptic curves over number fields. We also show that even a very weak version of Lang's error term conjecture would be enough to deduce boundedness of ranks for quadratic twists of elliptic curves over number fields. This can be seen as evidence for boundedness of ranks not relying on probabilistic heuristics on elliptic curves.
Recently, Andrews, Chan, Kim and Osburn introduced a $q$-series $h(q)$ for the study of the first positive rank and crank moments for overpartitions. They conjectured that for all integers $m \geq 3$, \begin{equation*}\label{hqcon} \frac{1}{(q)_{\infty}} (h(q) - m h(q^{m})) \end{equation*} has positive power series coefficients for all powers of $q$. Byungchan Kim, Eunmi Kim and Jeehyeon Seo provided a combinatorial interpretation and proved it is asymptotically true by circle method. In this note, we show this conjecture is true if $m$ is any positive power of $2$, and we show that in order t…
It is conjectured that for fixed $A$, $r \ge 1$, and $d \ge 1$, there is a uniform bound on the size of the torsion submodule of a Drinfeld $A$-module of rank $r$ over a degree $d$ extension $L$ of the fraction field $K$ of $A$. We verify the conjecture for $r=1$, and more generally for Drinfeld modules having potential good reduction at some prime above a specified prime of $K$. Moreover, we show that within an $\Lbar$-isomorphism class, there are only finitely many Drinfeld modules up to isomorphism over $L$ which have nonzero torsion. For the case $A=\Fq[T]$, $r=1$, and $L=\Fq(T)$, we give …
This is the third and final installment in our series of papers applying the method of Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer to deduce formulas for rank differences. The study of rank differences was initiated by Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer in their proof of Dyson's conjectures concerning Ramanujan's congruences for the partition function. Since then, other types of rank differences for statistics associated to partitions have been investigated. In this paper, we prove explicit formulas for M_2-rank differences for overpartitions. Additionally, we express a third order mock theta function in terms of rank d…
In this paper, we obtain infinitely many non-trivial identities and inequalities between full rank differences for 2-marked Durfee symbols, a generalization of partitions introduced by Andrews. A certain strict inequality, which almost always holds, shows that identities for Dyson's rank, similar to those proven by Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer, are quite rare. By showing an analogous strict inequality, we show that such non-trivial identities are also rare for the full rank, but on the other hand we obtain an infinite family of non-trivial identities, contrasting the partition theoretic case.
Let $k$ be a positive integer and $m$ be an integer. Garvan's $k$-rank $N_k(m,n)$ is the number of partitions of $n$ into at least $(k-1)$ successive Durfee squares with $k$-rank equal to $m$. In this paper give some asymptotics for $N_k(m,n)$ with $|m|\ge \sqrt{n}$ as $n\rightarrow \infty$. As a corollary, we give a more complete answer for the Dyson's crank distribution conjecture. We also establish some asymptotic formulas for finite differences of $N_k(m,n)$ with respect to $m$ with $m\gg \sqrt{n}\log n$.
We prove the $p$-curvature conjecture for rank two vector bundles with connection on generic curves, by combining deformation techniques for families of varieties and topological arguments.
Using techniques developed in \cite{KLR}, we verify Sarnak's conjecture for two classes of rank-one subshifts with unbounded cutting parameters. The first class of rank-one subshifts we consider are called {\em almost complete congruency classes} ({\em accc}), the definition of which is motivated by the main result of \cite{GS}, which implies that, when a rank-one subshift carries a unique non-atomic invariant probability measure, it is accc if it is measure-theoretically isomorphic to an odometer. The second class we consider consists of Katok's map and its generalizations.
Recently, much attention has been given to various inequalities among partition functions. For example, Nicolas, {and later DeSavlvo--Pak,} proved that $p(n)$ is eventually log-concave, and Ji--Zang showed that the cranks are eventually unimodal. This has led to a flurry of recent activity generalizing such results in different directions. At the same time, Stanton recently made deep conjectures on the positivity of certain polynomials associated to ranks and cranks of partitions, with the ultimate goal of pointing the way to ``deeper'' structure refining ranks and cranks. These have been show…
In this paper, we will study the arithmetic geometry of rank-2 attractors, which are Calabi-Yau threefolds whose Hodge structures admit interesting splits. We will develop methods to analyze the algebraic de Rham cohomologies of rank-2 attractors, and we will illustrate how our methods work by focusing on an example in a recent paper by Candelas, de la Ossa, Elmi and van Straten. We will look at the interesting connections between rank-2 attractors in string theory and Deligne's conjecture on the special values of $L$-functions. We will also formulate several open questions concerning the pote…
The aim of this paper is to get a complete list of positive definite symmetric matrices with integer entries $\a&b\b&d\$ such that all complex solutions to the system of equations $1-x_1=x_1^ax_2^b\ 1-x_2=x_1^bx_2^d$ are real. This result is related to Nahm's conjecture in rank 2 case.
