At the 1987 Ramanujan Centenary meeting Dyson asked for a coherent group-theoretical structure for Ramanujan's mock theta functions analogous to Hecke's theory of modular forms. Many of Ramanujan's mock theta functions can be written in terms of $R(ζ_p,q)$, where $R(z,q)$ is the two-variable generating function of Dyson's rank function and $ζ_p$ is a primitive $p$-th root of unity. In his lost notebook Ramanujan gives the $5$-dissection of $R(ζ_5,q)$. This result is related to Dyson's famous rank conjecture which was proved by Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer. In 2016 the first author showed that there is an analogous result for the $p$-dissection of $R(ζ_p,q)$ when $p$ is any prime greater than $3$, by extending work of Bringmann and Ono, and Ahlgren and Treneer. It was also shown how the group $Γ_1(p)$ acts on the elements of the $p$-dissection of $R(ζ_p,q)$. We extend this to the group $Γ_0(p)$, thus revealing new and surprising symmetries for Dyson's rank function.
We study the Dyson rank function $N(r,3;n)$, the number of partitions of $n$ with rank $\equiv r \pmod 3$. We investigate the convexity of these functions. We extend $N(r,3;n)$ multiplicatively to the set of partitions, and we determine the maximum value when taken over all partitions of size $n$.
In 1944 Dyson defined the rank of a partition as the largest part minus the number of parts, and conjectured that the residue of the rank mod 5 divides the partitions of 5n+4 into five equal classes. This gave a combinatorial explanation of Ramanujan's famous partition congruence mod 5. He made an analogous conjecture for the rank mod 7 and the partitions of 7n+5. In 1954 Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer proved Dyson's rank conjectures by constructing several Lambert-series identities basically using the theory of elliptic functions. In 2016 the author gave another proof using the theory of weak harm…

Many of Ramanujan's mock theta functions can be written in terms of $R(ζ,q)$, where $R(z,q)$ is the two-variable generating function of Dyson's rank function and $ζ$ is a root of unity. Building on earlier work of Watson, Zwegers, Gordon and McIntosh, and motivated by Dyson's question, Bringmann, Ono and Rhoades studied transformation properties of $R(ζ,q)$. In this paper we strengthen and extend the results of Bringma…
The Dyson rank of an integer partition is the difference between its largest part and the number of parts it contains. Using Fine-Dyson symmetry, we give formulas for the number of partitions of n with rank larger than n/2, and we prove identities for counts of partitions with large rank in fixed residue classes.
Ramanujan's congruence $p(5k+4) \equiv 0 \pmod 5$ led Dyson \cite{dyson} to conjecture the existence of a measure "rank" such that $p(5k+4)$ partitions of $5k+4$ could be divided into sub-classes with equal cardinality to give a direct proof of Ramanujan's congruence. The notion of rank was extended to rank differences by Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer \cite{atkin}, who proved Dyson's conjecture. More recently, Mao proved several equalities and inequalities, leaving some as conjectures, for rank differences for partitions modulo 10 \cite{mao10} and for $M_2$ rank differences for partitions with no …
Let $N_k(m,n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with Garvan $k$-rank $m$. It is well-known that Andrews-Garvan-Dyson's crank and Dyson's rank are the $k$-rank for $k=1$ and $k=2$, respectively. In this paper, we prove that the sequence $\{N_k(m,n)\}_{|m|\le n-k-71}$ is log-concave for all sufficiently large $n$ and each integer $k$. In particular, we partially solve the log-concavity conjecture for Andrews-Garvan-Dyson's crank and Dyson's rank, which was independently proposed by Bringmann-Jennings-Shaffer-Mahlburg and Ji-Zang.
We study the Dyson rank function $N(r,t;n)$, the number of partitions with rank congruent to $r$ modulo $t$. We first show that it is monotonic in $n$, and then show that it equidistributed as $n \rightarrow \infty$. Using this result we prove a conjecture of Hou and Jagadeeson on the convexity of $N(r,t;n)$.
We investigate the modular properties of a new partition rank, the $M_d$-rank of overpartitions. In fact this is an infinite family of ranks, indexed by the positive integer $d$, that gives both the Dyson rank of overpartitions and the overpartition $M_2$-rank as special cases. The $M_d$-rank of overpartitions is the holomorphic part of a certain harmonic Maass form of weight $\frac{1}{2}$. We give the exact transformation of this harmonic Maass form along with a few identities for the $M_d$-rank.
We exhibit an infinite family of vector-valued mock theta functions indexed by positive integers coprime to $6$. These are built from specializations of Dyson's rank generating function and related functions studied by Watson, Gordon, and McIntosh. The associated completed harmonic Maass forms transform according to the Weil representation attached to a rank one lattice. This strengthens a 2010 result of Bringmann and Ono and a 2019 result of Garvan.
Dyson's rank function and the Andrews--Garvan crank function famously give combinatorial witnesses for Ramanujan's partition function congruences modulo 5, 7, and 11. While these functions can be used to show that the corresponding sets of partitions split into 5, 7, or 11 equally sized sets, one may ask how to make the resulting bijections between partitions organized by rank or crank combinatorially explicit. Stanton recently made conjectures which aim to uncover a deeper combinatorial structure along these lines, where it turns out that minor modifications of the rank and crank are required…
In this paper, we use basic asymptotic analysis to establish some uniform asymptotic formulas for the Fourier coefficients of the inverse of Jacobi theta functions. In particular, we answer and improve some problems suggested and investigated by Bringmann, Manschot, and Dousse. As applications, we establish the asymptotic monotonicity properties for the rank and crank of the integer partitions introduced and investigated by Dyson, Andrews, and Garvan.
