Let $p$ be prime, let $K$ be a non-archimedean local field of characteristic $p$ and let $C_p^3$ denote the elementary abelian group of order $p^3$. We give a complete classification of Hopf orders in the $K$-Hopf algebra $(K[C_p^3])^*$ and under a mild condition compute their dual Hopf orders in the group ring $K[C_p^3]$.
We classify pointed $p^3$-dimensional Hopf algebras $H$ over any algebraically closed field $k$ of prime characteristic $p>0$. In particular, we focus on the cases when the group $G(H)$ of group-like elements is of order $p$ or $p^2$, that is, when $H$ is pointed but is not connected nor a group algebra. This work provides many new examples of (parametrized) non-commutative and non-cocommutative finite-dimensional Hopf algebras in positive characteristic.
We prove that a finite-dimensional irreducible Hopf algebra $H$ in positive characteristic is semisimple, if and only if it is commutative and semisimple, if and only if the restricted Lie algebra $P(H)$ of the primitives is a torus. This generalizes Hochschild's theorem on restricted Lie algebras, and also generalizes Demazure and Gabriel's and Sweedler's results on group schemes, in the special but essential situation with finiteness assumption added.
In 1999, Y. Kashina introduced the exponent of a Hopf algebra. In this paper, we prove that the exponent of a finite dimensional non-cosemisimple Hopf algebra with Chevalley property in characteristic 0 is infinite, and the exponent of a finite dimensional non-cosemisimple pointed Hopf algebra in positive characteristic is finite.
We classify all finite-dimensional connected Hopf algebras with large abelian primitive spaces. We show that they are Hopf algebra extensions of restricted enveloping algebras of certain restricted Lie algebras. For any abelian matched pair associated with these extensions, we construct a cohomology group, which classifies all the extensions up to equivalence. Moreover, we present a $1$-$1$ correspondence between the isomorphism classes and a group quotient of the cohomology group deleting some exceptional points, where the group respects the automorphisms of the abelian matched pair and the e…
We introduce characteristic classes for the spectral sequence associated to a split short exact sequence of Hopf algebras. We show that these characteristic classes can be seen as obstructions for the vanishing of differentials in the spectral sequence and prove a decomposition theorem. We also interpret our results in the settings of group and Lie algebra extensions and prove some interesting corollaries concerning the collapse of the (Lyndon-)Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence and the order of characteristic classes.
We present new examples of finite-dimensional Nichols algebras over fields of positive characteristic. The corresponding braided vector spaces are not of diagonal type, admit a realization as Yetter-Drinfeld modules over finite abelian groups and are analogous to braidings over fields of characteristic zero whose Nichols algebras have finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension described in arXiv:1606.02521. We obtain nex examples of finite-dimensional pointed Hopf algebras by bosonization with group algebras of suitable finite abelian groups.
Iterated Hopf Ore extensions (IHOEs) over an algebraically closed base field k of positive characteristic p are studied. We show that every IHOE over k satisfies a polynomial identity, with PI-degree a power of p, and that it is a filtered deformation of a commutative polynomial ring. We classify all 2-step IHOEs over k, thus generalising the classification of 2-dimensional connected unipotent algebraic groups over k. Further properties of 2-step IHOEs are described: for example their simple modules are classified, and every 2-step IHOE is shown to possess a large Hopf center and hence an anal…
Let H be a finite dimensional semisimple Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. In this note we give a short proof of the fact that a Hopf subalgebra of H is a depth two subalgebra if and only if it is normal Hopf subalgebra.
In this note we prove a generalization of the Frobenius-Schur theorem for finite groups for the case of semisimple Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. A similar result holds in characteristic $p > 2$ if the Hopf algebra is also cosemisimple. In fact we show a more general version for any finite-dimensional semisimple algebra with an involution.
The Adams operators $Ψ_n$ on a Hopf algebra $H$ are the convolution powers of the identity of $H$. We study the Adams operators when $H$ is graded connected. They are also called Hopf powers or Sweedler powers. The main result is a complete description of the characteristic polynomial (both eigenvalues and their multiplicities) for the action of the operator $Ψ_n$ on each homogeneous component of $H$. The eigenvalues are powers of $n$. The multiplicities are independent of $n$, and in fact only depend on the dimension sequence of $H$. These results apply in particular to the antipode of $H$ (t…
In this paper, we establish a structure theorem for connected graded Hopf algebras over a field of characteristic $0$ by claiming the existence of a family of homogeneous generators and a total order on the index set that satisfy some desirable conditions. The approach to the structure theorem is constructive, based on the combinatorial properties of Lyndon words and the standard bracketing on words. As a surprising consequence of the structure theorem, we show that connected graded Hopf algebras of finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension over a field of characteristic $0$ are all iterated Hopf Ore …
Let $L/F$ be a Galois extension of fields with Galois group isomorphic to the quaternion group of order $ 8 $. We describe all of the Hopf-Galois structures admitted by $ L/F $, and determine which of the Hopf algebras that appear are isomorphic as Hopf algebras. In the case that $ F $ has characteristic zero we also determine which of these Hopf algebras are isomorphic as $ F $-algebras and explicitly compute their Wedderburn-Artin decompositions.
Let H denote a semisimple Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0. We show that the degree of any irreducible representation of H whose character belongs to the center of H^* must divide the dimension of H .
There are two notions of exponent of finite-dimensional Hopf algebras introduced and studied in the literature. In this note, we discuss and compare their properties including invariance and finiteness in this note. Specifically, one notion is invariant under twisting and taking the Drinfeld double, just like the other one. We also find that if the non-cosemisimplicity and dual Chevalley property hold, both exponents are infinite in characteristic $0$ but finite in positive characteristic.
Let $H$ be a pointed Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. If $H$ is a domain with finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension greater than or equal to two, then $H$ contains a Hopf subalgebra of Gelfand-Kirillov dimension two.
We show that every central simple algebra A over a field k is Brauer equivalent to a quotient of a finite dimensional Hopf algebra over the same field (that is- A is Hopf Schur). If the characteristic of the field is zero, or if the algebra has a Galois splitting field of degree prime to the characteristic of k, we can take this Hopf algebra to be semisimple. We also show that if F is any finite extension of k, then F is a quotient of a finite dimensional Hopf algebra over k. We use it in order to show why the algebric closeness assumption is necessary in a weak form of Kaplansky's tenth conje…
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. In this paper, we obtain the structure theorems for semisimple Hopf algebras of dimension $9q^2$ over $k$, where $q$ is a prime number. We also prove that odd-dimensional semisimple Hopf algebras over $k$ of dimension less than 600 are of Frobenius type.
Let $H$ be a pointed Hopf algebra. We show that under some mild assumptions $H$ and its associated graded Hopf algebra $\gr H$ have the same Gelfand-Kirillov dimension. As an application, we prove that the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of a connected Hopf algebra is either infinity or a positive integer. We also classify connected Hopf algebras of GK-dimension three over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero.
We classify all non-affine Hopf algebras $H$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic zero that are integral domains of Gelfand-Kirillov dimension two and satisfy the condition $\text{Ext}^1_H(k, k) \neq 0$. The affine ones were classified by the authors in 2010.
Let H be a semisimple (so, finite dimensional) Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic zero and let A be a commutative domain over k. We show that if A arises as an H-module algebra via an inner faithful H-action, then H must be a group algebra. This answers a question of E. Kirkman and J. Kuzmanovich and partially answers a question of M. Cohen. The main results of this article extend to working over k of positive characteristic. On the other hand, we obtain results on Hopf actions on Weyl algebras as a consequence of the main theorem.
We settle an old question about the existence of certain "sums-of-squares" formulas over a field F (which are the simplest examples of composition formulas for quadratic forms). A classical theorem says that if such a formula exists over a field of characteristic 0, then certain binomial coefficients must be even. We use motivic cohomology to prove that the same result holds in characteristic p.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. For a loop $\circlearrowleft$, denote its path coalgebra by $k\circlearrowleft$. In this paper, all the finite-dimensional commutative Hopf algebras over the sub coalgebras of $k\circlearrowleft$ are given. As a direct consequence, all the commutative infinitesimal groups $\mathcal{G}$ with dim$_{k}$Lie$(\mathcal{G})=1$ are classified.
Let $p,q$ be prime numbers with $p>q^3$, and $k$ an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. In this paper, we obtain the structure theorems for semisimple Hopf algebras of dimension $pq^3$.
Let $\Bbbk$ be a base field of characteristic $p>0$ and let $U$ be the restricted enveloping algebra of a 2-dimensional nonabelian restricted Lie algebra. We classify all inner-faithful $U$-actions on noetherian Koszul Artin-Schelter regular algebras of global dimension up to three.
For finite-dimensional Hopf algebras, their classification in characteristic $0$ (e.g. over $\mathbb{C}$) has been investigated for decades with many fruitful results, but their structures in positive characteristic have remained elusive. In this paper, working over an algebraically closed field $\mathbf{k}$ of prime characteristic $p$, we introduce the concept, called Primitive Deformation, to provide a structured technique to classify certain finite-dimensional connected Hopf algebras which are almost primitively generated; that is, these connected Hopf algebras are $p^{n+1}$-dimensional, wh…
Let H be a Hopf algebra of dimension pq over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, where p, q are odd primes with p < q < 4p+12. We prove that H is semisimple and thus isomorphic to a group algebra, or the dual of a group algebra.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. In this paper, we obtain the structure theorems for semisimple Hopf algebras of dimension $p^2q^2$ over $k$, where $p,q$ are prime numbers with $p^2<q$. As an application, we also obtain the structure theorems for semisimple Hopf algebras of dimension $9p^2$ and $25q^2$ for all primes $3\neq p$ and $5\neq q$.
Let $H$ be a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. If $H$ is not semisimple and $\dim(H)=2n$ for some odd integer $n$, then $H$ or $H^*$ is not unimodular. Using this result, we prove that if $\dim(H)=2p$ for some odd prime $p$, then $H$ is semisimple. This completes the classification of Hopf algebras of dimension $2p$.
In this paper we classify, up to equivalence, all semisimple nontrivial Hopf algebras of dimension $2^{2n+1}$ for $n\geq 2$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$ with the group of group-like elements isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_{2^{n}}\times \mathbb{Z}_{2^{n}}$. Moreover we classify all such nonisomorphic Hopf algebras of dimension $32$ and show that they are not twist-equivalent to each other. More generally, given an abelian group of order $2^{m-1}$ we give an upper bound for the number of nonisomorphic nontrivial Hopf algebras of dimension $2^{m}$ which have this group as t…
We study actions of semisimple Hopf algebras H on Weyl algebras A over a field of characteristic zero. We show that the action of H on A must factor through a group algebra; in other words, if H acts inner faithfully on A, then H is cocommutative. The techniques used include reduction modulo a prime number and the study of semisimple cosemisimple Hopf actions on division algebras.
The Hopf order of an element $h$ of a Hopf algebra $H$ is the least $n$ such that the $n$-th Hopf power of $h$ is trivial. For some bismash product Hopf algebras obtained from factorizable groups (including Drinfeld doubles of some groups) we compute the dimensions of the spaces of elements with trivial $n$-th Hopf powers, and determine which Hopf orders of elements are possible. We discuss the behavior under twists and duality.
This paper constitutes the first part of a program to classify all affine prime regular Hopf algebras $H$ of Gelfand-Kirillov dimension one over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We prove a number of properties of such an algebra, list some classes of examples, and then prove that - when the PI-degree of $H$ is prime - our list contains all such algebras.
Let $H$ be a connected Hopf algebra acting on an algebra $A$. Working over a base field having characteristic $0$, we show that for a given prime (semi-prime, completely prime) ideal $I$ of $A$, the largest $H$-stable ideal of A contained in $I$ is also prime (semi-prime, completely prime). We also prove a similar result for certain subrings of convolution algebras.
Let $p$ be a prime, $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$. In this paper, we provide the classification of connected Hopf algebras of dimension $p^3$, except the case when the primitive space of the Hopf algebra is two dimensional and abelian. Each isomorphism class is presented by generators $x, y, z$ with relations and Hopf algebra structures. Let $μ$ be the multiplicative group of $(p^2+p-1)$-th roots of unity. When the primitive space is one-dimensional and $p$ is odd, there is an infinite family of isomorphism classes, which is naturally parameterized by $A_{k}^1/μ$.
We develop a mechanism for classication of isomorphism types of non-trivial semisimple Hopf algebras whose group of grouplikes $G(H)$ is abelian of prime index $p$ which is the smallest prime divisor of $|G(H)|$. We describe structure of the second cohomology group of extensions of $\k C_p$ by $\k^G$ where $C_p$ is a cyclic group of order $p$ and $G$ a finite abelian group. We carry out an explicit classification for Hopf algebras of this kind of dimension $p^4$ for any odd prime $p$. The ground field is algebraically closed of characteristic $0$.
Let H be a non-semisimple Hopf algebra of dimension 2p^2 over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, where p is an odd prime. We prove that H or H^* is pointed, which completes the classification for Hopf algebras of these dimensions.
In this paper, we prove that a non-semisimple Hopf algebra H of dimension 4p with p an odd prime over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero is pointed provided H contains more than two group-like elements. In particular, we prove that non-semisimple Hopf algebras of dimensions 20, 28 and 44 are pointed or their duals are pointed, and this completes the classification of Hopf algebras in these dimensions.
Let $H$ be a non-semisimple Hopf algebra with antipode $S$ of dimension $pq$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 where $p \le q$ are odd primes. We prove that $\Tr(S^{2p})=p^2d$ where $d \equiv pq \pmod{4}$. As a consequence, if $p,q$ are twin primes, then any Hopf algebra of dimension $pq$ is semisimple.
Let $H$ be a cocommutative Hopf algebra acting on an algebra $A$. Assuming the base field to be algebraically closed and the $H$-action on $A$ to be integral, that is, it is given by a coaction of some Hopf subalgebra of the finite dual $H^\circ$ that is an integral domain, we stratify the prime spectrum $\mbox{Spec}\, A$ in terms of the prime spectra of certain commutative algebras. For arbitrary $H$-actions in characteristic $0$, we show that the largest $H$-stable ideal of $A$ that is contained in a given semiprime ideal of $A$ is semiprime as well.
Let H be a Hopf algebra of dimension pq over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, where p <= q are odd primes. Suppose that S is the antipode of H. If H is not semisimple, then S^{4p}=id_H and Tr(S^{2p}) is an integer divisible by p^2. In particular, if dim H = p^2, we prove that H is isomorphic to a Taft algebra. We then complete the classification for the Hopf algebras of dimension p^2.
Let $H$ be a finite-dimensional connected Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field $\field$ of characteristic $p>0$. We provide the algebra structure of the associated graded Hopf algebra $\gr H$. Then, we study the case when $H$ is generated by a Hopf subalgebra $K$ and another element and the case when $H$ is cocommutative. When $H$ is a restricted universal enveloping algebra, we give a specific basis for the second term of the Hochschild cohomology of the coalgebra $H$ with coefficients in the trivial $H$-bicomodule $\field$. Finally, we classify all connected Hopf algebras of dimen…
Let $A$ be a Hopf algebra over a field $K$ of characteristic zero such that its coradical $H$ is a finite dimensional sub-Hopf algebra. Our main theorem shows that there is a gauge transformation $ζ$ on $A$ such that $A^ζ\cong Q#H$ where $A^ζ$ is the dual quasi-bialgebra obtained from $A$ by twisting its multiplication by $ζ$, $Q$ is a connected dual quasi-bialgebra in $^H_H\mathcal{YD}$ and $Q #H $ is a dual quasi-bialgebra called the bosonization of $Q$ by $H$.
Over a field of prime characteristic $p>2$, we prove that the cohomology rings of some pointed Hopf algebras of dimension $p^3$ are finitely generated. These are Hopf algebras arising in the ongoing classification of finite dimensional Hopf algebras in positive characteristic, and include bosonizations of Nichols algebras of Jordan type in a general setting as well as their liftings when $p=3$. Our techniques are applications of twisted tensor product resolutions and Anick resolutions in combination with May spectral sequences.
Let $q$ be a prime number, $k$ an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, and $H$ a semisimple Hopf algebra of dimension $2q^3$. This paper proves that $H$ is always semisolvable. That is, such Hopf algebras can be obtained by (a number of) extensions from group algebras or duals of group algebras.
Let H be a connected Hopf k-algebra of finite Gel'fand-Kirillov dimension over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0. The objects of study in this paper are the left or right coideal subalgebras T of H. They are shown to be deformations of commutative polynomial k-algebras. A number of well-known homological and other properties follow immediately from this fact. Further properties are described, examples are considered, invariants are constructed and a number of open questions are listed.
Let $p,q$ be prime numbers with $p^4<q$, and $k$ an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. We show that semisimple Hopf algebras of dimension $p^2q^2$ can be constructed either from group algebras and their duals by means of extensions, or from Radford biproduct $R#kG$, where $kG$ is the group algebra of group $G$ of order $p^2$, $R$ is a semisimple Yetter-Drinfeld Hopf algebra in ${}^{kG}_{kG}\mathcal{YD}$ of dimension $q^2$. As an application, the special case that the structure of semisimple Hopf algebras of dimension $4q^2$ is given.
There is no systematic general procedure by which isomorphism classes of Hopf algebras that are extensions of $\k F$ by ${\k}^G$ can be found. We develop the general procedure for classification of isomorphism classes of Hopf algebras which are extensions of the group algebra $\k C_p$ by ${\k}^G$ where $C_p$ is a cyclic group of prime order $p$ and ${\k}^G$ is the Hopf algebra dual of $\k G$, $G$ a finite abelian $p$-group and $\k$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. We apply the method to calculate the number of isoclasses of commutative extensions and certain extensions o…
We show that there is a family of complex semisimple Hopf algebras that do not admit a Hopf order over any number ring. They are Drinfel'd twists of certain group algebras. The twist contains a scalar fraction which makes impossible the definability of such Hopf algebras over number rings. We also prove that a complex semisimple Hopf algebra satisfies Kaplansky's sixth conjecture if and only if it admits a weak order, in the sense of Rumynin and Lorenz, over the integers.
Let $p$ be an odd prime number and $K$ a number field having a primitive $p$-th root of unity $ζ.$ We prove that Nikshych's non-group theoretical Hopf algebra $H_p$, which is defined over $\mathbb{Q}(ζ)$, admits a Hopf order over the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ if and only if there is an ideal $I$ of $\mathcal{O}_K$ such that $I^{2(p-1)} = (p)$. This condition does not hold in a cyclotomic field. Hence this gives an example of a semisimple Hopf algebra over a number field not admitting a Hopf order over any cyclotomic ring of integers. Moreover, we show that, when a Hopf order over $\math…
