We prove that a finite-dimensional irreducible Hopf algebra $H$ in positive characteristic is semisimple, if and only if it is commutative and semisimple, if and only if the restricted Lie algebra $P(H)$ of the primitives is a torus. This generalizes Hochschild's theorem on restricted Lie algebras, and also generalizes Demazure and Gabriel's and Sweedler's results on group schemes, in the special but essential situation with finiteness assumption added.
We obtain the double factorization of braided bialgebras or braided Hopf algebras, give relation among integrals and semisimplicity of braided Hopf algebra and its factors.
Let $k$ be a field, and $H$ a Hopf algebra with bijective antipode. If $H$ is commutative, noetherian, semisimple and cosemisimple, then the category ${}_{H}{\mathcal {YD}}^H$ of Yetter-Drinfeld modules is semisimple. We also prove a similar statement for the category of Long dimodules, without the assumption that $H$ is commutative.
This expository article presents a unified ring theoretic approach, based on the theory of Frobenius algebras, to a variety of results on Hopf algebras. These include a theorem of S. Zhu on the degrees of irreducible representations, the so-called class equation, the determination of the semisimplicity locus of the Grothendieck ring, the spectrum of the adjoint class and a non-vanishing result for the adjoint character.
Let $k$ be a commutative ring, $H$ a faithfully flat Hopf algebra with bijective antipode, $A$ a $k$-flat right $H$-comodule algebra. We investigate when a relative Hopf module is projective over the subring of coinvariants $B=A^{{\rm co}H}$, and we study the semisimplicity of the category of relative Hopf modules.
Let H denote a semisimple Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0. We show that the degree of any irreducible representation of H whose character belongs to the center of H^* must divide the dimension of H .
The notion of double coset for semisimple finite dimensional Hopf algebras is introduced. This is done by considering an equivalence relation on the set of irreducible characters of the dual Hopf algebra. As an application formulae for the restriction of the irreducible characters to normal Hopf subalgebras are given.
We develop the theory of semisimple weak Hopf algebras and obtain analogues of a number of classical results for ordinary semisimple Hopf algebras. We prove a criterion for semisimplicity and analyze the square of the antipode S^2 of a semisimple weak Hopf algebra A. We explain how the Frobenius-Perron dimensions of irreducible A-modules and eigenvalues of S^2 can be computed using the inclusion matrix associated to A. A trace formula of Larson and Radford is extended to a relation between the global and Frobenius-Perron dimensions of A. Finally, an analogue of the Class Equation of Kac and Zh…
We present a unified ring theoretic approach, based on properties of the Casimir element of a symmetric algebra, to a variety of known divisibility results for the degrees of irreducible representations of semisimple Hopf algebras in characteristic 0. All these results are motivated by a classical theorem of Frobenius on the degrees of irreducible complex representations of finite groups.
The aim of this work is to discuss the concepts of degeneration, deformation and rigidity, and to apply them to the geometric study of the varieties of Hopf algebras. The main result is the description of the n-dimensional rigid Hopf algebras and the irreducible components for n=p^2, p prime and for n<14.
Masuoka proved (2009) that a finite-dimensional irreducible Hopf algebra $H$ in positive characteristic is semisimple if and only if it is commutative semisimple if and only if the Hopf subalgebra generated by all primitives is semisimple. In this paper, we give another proof of this result by using Hochschild cohomology of coalgebras.
Let $\left( H,R\right) $ be a finite dimensional semisimple and cosemisimple quasi-triangular Hopf algebra over a field $k$. In this paper, we give the structure of irreducible objects of the Yetter-Drinfeld module category ${} {}_{H}^{H}\mathcal{YD}.$ Let $H_{R}$ be the Majid's transmuted braided group of $\left( H,R\right) ,$ we show that $H_{R}$ is cosemisimple. As a coalgebra, let $H_{R}=D_{1}\oplus\cdots\oplus D_{r}$ be the sum of minimal $H$-adjoint-stable subcoalgebras. For each $i$ $\left( 1\leq i\leq r\right) $, we choose a minimal left coideal $W_{i}$ of $D_{i}$, and we can define th…
S. Montgomery and S. Witherspoon proved that upper and lower semisolvable, semisimple, finite dimensional Hopf algebras are of Froebenius type when their dimensions are not divisible by the characteristic of the base field. In this note we show that a finite dimensional, semisimple, lower solvable Hopf algebra is always of Froebenius type, in arbitrary characteristic.
For a quasi-triangular Hopf algebra $\left( H,R\right) $, there is a notion of transmuted braided group $H_{R}$ of $H$ introduced by Majid. The transmuted braided group $H_{R}$ is a Hopf algebra in the braided category $_{H}\mathcal{M}$. The $R$-adjoint-stable algebra associated with any simple left $H_{R}$-comodule is defined by the authors, and is used to characterize the structure of all irreducible Yetter-Drinfeld modules in ${}_{H}^{H} \mathcal{YD}$. In this note, we prove for a semisimple factorizable Hopf algebra $ \left( H,R\right) $ that any simple subcoalgebra of $H_R$ is $H$-stable …
A classical theorem of I. Schur states that the degree of any irreducible complex representation of a finite group $G$ divides the order of $G/\mathscr{Z} G$, where $\mathscr{Z} G$ is the center $G$. This note discusses similar divisibility results for certain classes of Hopf algebras.
To a depth two extension A | B, we associate the dual bialgebroids S := \End {}_BA_B and T := (A ø_B A)^B over the centralizer R=C_A(B). In the set-up where R is a subalgebra of B, which is quite common, two nondegenerate pairings of S and T will define an anti-automorphism τof the algebra S. Making use of a two-sided depth two structure, we prove that τis an antipode and S is a Hopf algebroid of a type we call skew Hopf algebra. A final section discusses how τand the nondegenerate pairings generalize to modules via the pi-method for depth two, and a certain derived mapping of cochain complexe…
Any finite set of linear operators on an algebra $A$ yields an operator algebra $B$ and a module structure on A, whose endomorphism ring is isomorphic to a subring $A^B$ of certain invariant elements of $A$. We show that if $A$ is a critically compressible left $B$-module, then the dimension of its self-injective hull $A$ over the ring of fractions of $A^B$ is bounded by the uniform dimension of $A$ and the number of linear operators generating $B$. This extends a known result on irreducible Hopf actions and applies in particular to weak Hopf action. Furthermore we prove necessary and sufficie…
A certain class of rank two pointed Hopf algebras is considered. The simple modules of their Drinfel'd double is described using Radford's method \cite{rad}. The socle of the tensor product of two such modules is computed and a formula similar to the one in \cite{one} is obtained in some conditions. Cases when such a tensor product is completely irreducible are also given in the last section.
By using the action of certain Galois groups on complex irreducible characters and conjugacy classes, we define the Galois characters and Galois classes. We will introduce a set of Galois characters, called Galois irreducible characters, and we show that each Galois character is a non-negative linear combination of the Galois irreducible characters. It is shown that whenever the complex characters of the groups of a tower produce a positive self-dual Hopf algebra (PSH), Galois characters of the groups of the tower also produce a PSH. Then we will classify the Galois characters and Galois class…
We show that semisimple Hopf algebras having a self-dual faithful irreducible comodule of dimension 2 are always obtained as abelian extensions with quotient Z_2. We prove that nontrivial Hopf algebras arising in this way can be regarded as deformations of binary polyhedral groups and describe its category of representations. We also prove a strengthening of a result of Nichols and Richmond on cosemisimple Hopf algebras with a 2-dimensional irreducible comodule in the finite dimensional context. Finally, we give some applications to the classification of certain classes of semisimple Hopf alge…
Motivated by the orthogonality relations for irreducible characters of a finite group, we evaluate the sum of a finite group of linear characters of a Hopf algebra, at all grouplike and skew-primitive elements. We then discuss results for products of skew-primitive elements. Examples include groups, (quantum groups over) Lie algebras, the small quantum groups of Lusztig, and their variations (by Andruskiewitsch and Schneider).
In a biFrobenius algebra H, in particular in the case that H is a finite dimensional Hopf algebra, the antipode S can be decomposed as S= cf where c and f are the Frobenius and coFrobenius isomorphisms. We use this decomposition to present an easy proof of Radford's formula for the fourth composition power of S. Then, in the case that the map S is the convolution inverse of the identity, we prove the trace formula for the trace of the square of S. We finish by applying the above results to study the semisimplicity and cosemisimplicity of H.
We introduce a general notion of depth two for ring homomorphism N --> M, and derive Morita equivalence of the step one and three centralizers, R = C_M(N) and C = End_{N-M}(M ø_N M), via dual bimodules and step two centralizers A = End_NM_N and B = (M ø_N M)^N, in a Jones tower above N --> M. Lu's bialgebroids End_k A' and A' ø_k {A'}^op over a k-algebra A' are generalized to left and right bialgebroids A and B with B the R-dual bialgebroid of A. We introduce Galois-type actions of A on M and B on End_NM when M_N is a balanced module. In the case of Frobenius extensions M | N, we prove an endo…
In this paper we introduce a trace-like invariant for the irreducible representations of a finite dimensional complex Hopf algebra H. We do so by considering the trace of the map induced by the antipode S on the endomorphisms End(V) of a self-dual module V. We also compute the values of this trace for the representations of two non-semisimple Hopf algebras: u_q(sl_2) and D(H_n(q)), the Drinfeld double of the Taft algebra.
We establish a bijective correspondence between gauge equivalence classes of dynamical twists in a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra $H$ based on a finite abelian group $A$ and equivalence classes of pairs $(K, \{V_λ\}_{λ\in \hat{A}})$, where $K$ is an $H$-simple left $H$-comodule semisimple algebra and $\{V_λ\}_{λ\in \hat{A}}$ is a family of irreducible representations satisfying certain conditions. Our results generalize the results obtained by Etingof-Nikshych on the classification of dynamical twists in group algebras.
The character ring \CGL of covariant irreducible tensor representations of the general linear group admits a Hopf algebra structure isomorphic to the Hopf algebra \Sym$ of symmetric functions. Here we study the character rings \CO and \CSp of the orthogonal and symplectic subgroups of the general linear group within the same framework of symmetric functions. We show that \CO and \CSp also admit natural Hopf algebra structures that are isomorphic to that of \CGL, and hence to \Sym. The isomorphisms are determined explicitly, along with the specification of standard bases for \CO and \CSp analog…
A description of all the irreducible representations of generalized quantum doubles associated to skew pairings of semisimple Hopf algebras is given. In particular a description of the irreducible representations of semisimple Drinfeld doubles is obtained. It is shown that the Grothendieck ring of these generalized quantum doubles have a structure similar to the rings that arise from Green functors. In order to do this we give a formula for the tensor product of any two such irreducible representations.
For a semisimple quasi-triangular Hopf algebra $\left( H,R\right) $ over a field $k$ of characteristic zero, and a strongly separable quantum commutative $H$-module algebra $A$ over which the Drinfeld element of $H$ acts trivially, we show that $A\#H$ is a weak Hopf algebra, and it can be embedded into a weak Hopf algebra $\operatorname{End}A^{\ast}\otimes H$. With these structure, $_{A\#H}\operatorname{Mod}$ is the monoidal category introduced by Cohen and Westreich, and $_{\operatorname{End}A^{\ast}\otimes H}\mathcal{M}$ is tensor equivalent to $_{H}\mathcal{M}$. If $A$ is in the M{ü}ger cen…
Schur functions provide an integral basis of the ring of symmetric functions. It is shown that this ring has a natural Hopf algebra structure by identifying the appropriate product, coproduct, unit, counit and antipode, and their properties. Characters of covariant tensor irreducible representations of the classical groups GL(n), O(n) and Sp(n) are then expressed in terms of Schur functions, and the Hopf algebra is exploited in the determination of group-subgroup branching rules and the decomposition of tensor products. The analysis is carried out in terms of n-independent universal characters…
We construct multi-brace cotensor Hopf algebras with bosonizations of quantum multi-brace algebras as examples. Quantum quasi-symmetric algebras are then obtained by taking particular initial data; this allows us to realize the whole quantum group associated to a symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebra as a quantum quasi-symmetric algebra and all highest weight irreducible representations can be constructed using this machinery. It also provides a systematic way to construct simple modules over the quantum double of a quantum group.
We study the algebra of conformal endomorphisms $\Cend^{G,G}_n$ of a finitely generated free module $M_n$ over the coordinate Hopf algebra $H$ of a linear algebraic group $G$. It is shown that a conformal subalgebra of $\Cend_n$ acting irreducibly on $M_n$ generates an essential left ideal of $\Cend^{G,G}_n$ if enriched with operators of multiplication on elements of $H$. In particular, we describe such subalgebras for the case when $G$ is finite.
The Drinfel'd double D(A) of a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra A is a Hopf algebraic counterpart of the monoidal center construction. Majid introduced an important representation of the Drinfel'd double, which he called the Schrödinger representation. We study this representation from the viewpoint of the theory of monoidal categories. One of our main results is as follows: If two finite-dimensional Hopf algebras A and B over a field k are monoidally Morita equivalent, i.e., there exists an equivalence F from the module category over A to the module category over B of k-linear monoidal categor…
Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a finite braided multitensor category. Let $B$ be Majid's automorphism braided group of $\mathcal{C}$, then $B$ is a cocommutative Hopf algebra in $\mathcal{C}$. We show that the center of $\mathcal{C}$ is isomorphic to the category of left $B$-comodules in $\mathcal{C}$, and the decomposition of $B$ into a direct sum of indecomposable $\mathcal{C}$-subcoalgebras leads to a decomposition of $B$-$\operatorname*{Comod}_{\mathcal{C}}$ into a direct sum of indecomposable $\mathcal{C}$-module subcategories. As an application, we present an explicit characterization of the struc…
We define a class of algebras which are distinguished by a PBW property and an orthogonality condition, and which we call Hopf-Hecke algebras, since they generalize the Drinfeld Hecke algebras defined by Drinfeld. In the course of studying the orthogonality condition and in analogy to the orthogonal group we show the existence of a pin cover for cocommutative Hopf algebras over $\mathbb{C}$ with an orthogonal module or, more generally, pointed cocommutative Hopf algebras over a field of characteristic $0$ with an orthogonal module. Following the suggestion of Dan Barbasch and Siddhartha Sahi, …
For a finite-index $\mathrm{II}_1$ subfactor $N \subset M$, we prove the existence of a universal Hopf $\ast$-algebra (or, a discrete quantum group in the analytic language) acting on $M$ in a trace-preserving fashion and fixing $N$ pointwise. We call this Hopf $\ast$-algebra the quantum Galois group for the subfactor and compute it in some examples of interest, notably for arbitrary irreducible finite-index depth-two subfactors. Along the way, we prove the existence of universal acting Hopf algebras for more general structures (tensors in enriched categories), in the spirit of recent work by …
Hopf-Hecke algebras and Barbasch-Sahi algebras were defined by the first named author (2016) in order to provide a general framework for the study of Dirac cohomology. The aim of this paper is to explore new examples of these definitions and to contribute to their classification. Hopf-Hecke algebras are distinguished by an orthogonality condition and a PBW property. The PBW property for algebras such as the ones considered here has been of great interest in the literature and we extend this discussion by further results on the classification of such deformations and by a class of hitherto unex…
We contribute to the classification of Hopf algebras with finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension, GK-dimension for short, through the study of Nichols algebras over $\mathbb{D}_{\infty}$, the infinite dihedral group. We find all the irreducible Yetter-Drinfeld modules $V$ over $\mathbb{D}_{\infty}$, and determine which Nichols algebras $\mathcal{B}(V)$ of $V$ are finite GK-dimensional.
