We propose local space-time approximation spaces for parabolic problems that are optimal in the sense of Kolmogorov and may be employed in multiscale and domain decomposition methods. The diffusion coefficient can be arbitrarily rough in space and time. To construct local approximation spaces we consider a compact transfer operator that acts on the space of local solutions and covers the full time dimension. The optimal local spaces are then given by the left singular vectors of the transfer operator. To prove compactness of the latter we combine a suitable parabolic Caccioppoli inequality with the compactness theorem of Aubin-Lions. In contrast to the elliptic setting [I. Babuška and R. Lipton, Multiscale Model. Simul., 9 (2011), pp. 373-406] we need an additional regularity result to combine the two results. Furthermore, we employ the generalized finite element method to couple local spaces and construct an approximation of the global solution. Since our approach yields reduced space-time bases, the computation of the global approximation does not require a time stepping method and is thus computationally efficient. Moreover, we derive rigorous local and global a priori error bounds. In detail, we bound the global approximation error in a graph norm by the local errors in the $L^2(H^1)$-norm, noting that the space the transfer operator maps to is equipped with this norm. Numerical experiments demonstrate an exponential decay of the singular values of the transfer operator and the local and global approximation errors for problems with high contrast or multiscale structure regarding space and time.
This paper is concerned with the numerical approximation of the Dirichlet initial-boundary-value problem of nonlinear pseudo-parabolic equations with spectral methods. Error estimates for the semidiscrete Galerkin and collocation schemes based on Jacobi polynomials are derived.
The aim of this work is to show an abstract framework to analyze the numerical approximation by using a finite element method in space and a Backward-Euler scheme in time of a family of degenerate parabolic problems. We deduce sufficient conditions to ensure that the fully-discrete problem has a unique solution and to prove quasi-optimal error estimates for the approximation. Finally, we show a degenerate parabolic problem which arises from electromagnetic applications and deduce its well-posedness and convergence by using the developed abstract theory, including numerical tests to illustrate …
This work presents, analyzes and tests stabilized space-time finite element methods on fully unstructured simplicial space-time meshes for the numerical solution of space-time tracking parabolic optimal control problems with the standard $L_2$-regularization.
We study a general class of singular degenerate parabolic stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) which include, in particular, the stochastic porous medium equations and the stochastic fast diffusion equation. We propose a fully discrete numerical approximation of the considered SPDEs based on the very weak formulation. By exploiting the monotonicity properties of the proposed formulation we prove the convergence of the numerical approximation towards the unique solution. Furthermore, we construct an implementable finite element scheme for the spatial discretization of the very weak…
The aim of this work is to show an abstract framework to analyze the numerical approximation for a family of linear degenerate parabolic mixed equations by using a finite element method in space and a Backward-Euler scheme in time. We consider sufficient conditions to prove that the fully-discrete problem has a unique solution and prove quasi-optimal error estimates for the approximation. Furthermore, we show that mixed finite element formulations arising from dynamics fluids (time-dependent Stokes problem) and from electromagnetic applications (eddy current models), can be analyzed as applica…

In this work, we present a novel error analysis for recovering a spatially dependent diffusion coefficient in an elliptic or parabolic problem. It is based on the standard regularized output least-squares formulation with an $H^1(Ω)$ seminorm penalty, and then discretized using the Galerkin finite element method with conforming piecewise linear finite elements for both state and coefficient, and backward Euler in time in the parabolic case. We derive \textit{a priori} weighted $L^2(Ω)$ estimates where the constants depend only on the given problem data for both elliptic and parabolic cases. Fu…
In this paper, we develop a computational multiscale to solve the parabolic wave approximation with heterogeneous and variable media. Parabolic wave approximation is a technique to approximate the full wave equation. One benefit of the method is that: one wave propagation direction can be taken as an evolution direction, and we then can discretize it using a classical scheme like Backward Euler. Consequently, we obtain a set of quasi-gas-dynamic (QGD) models with different heterogeneous permeability fields. Then, we employ constraint energy minimization generalized multiscale finite element me…
The analyses of interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin methods of any order k for solving elliptic and parabolic problems with Dirac line sources are presented. For the steady state case, we prove convergence of the method by deriving a priori error estimates in the L2 norm and in weighted energy norms. In addition, we prove almost optimal local error estimates in the energy norm for any approximation order. Further, almost optimal local error estimates in the L2 norm are obtained for the case of piecewise linear approximations whereas suboptimal error bounds in the L2 norm are shown for any …
The paper is concerned with space-time IgA approximations of parabolic initial-boundary value problems. We deduce guaranteed and fully computable error bounds adapted to special features of IgA approximations and investigate their applicability. The derivation method is based on the analysis of respective integral identities and purely functional arguments. Therefore, the estimates do not contain mesh-dependent constants and are valid for any approximation from the admissible (energy) class. In particular, they provide computable error bounds for norms associated with stabilised space-time IgA…
We propose a two-point flux approximation finite-volume scheme for a stochastic non-linear parabolic equation with a multiplicative noise. The time discretization is implicit except for the stochastic noise term in order to be compatible with stochastic integration in the sense of Itô. We show existence and uniqueness of solutions to the scheme and the appropriate measurability for stochastic integration follows from the uniqueness of approximate solutions.
In this paper, we prove a Carleman estimate for fully-discrete approximations of parabolic operators in which the discrete parameters $h$ and $\triangle t$ are connected to the large Carleman parameter. We use this estimate to obtain relaxed observability inequalities which yield, by duality, controllability results for fully-discrete linear and semilinear parabolic equations.
We consider the Dynamical Low Rank (DLR) approximation of random parabolic equations and propose a class of fully discrete numerical schemes. Similarly to the continuous DLR approximation, our schemes are shown to satisfy a discrete variational formulation. By exploiting this property, we establish stability of our schemes: we show that our explicit and semi-implicit versions are conditionally stable under a parabolic type CFL condition which does not depend on the smallest singular value of the DLR solution; whereas our implicit scheme is unconditionally stable. Moreover, we show that, in cer…
A discretization of an optimal control problem of a stochastic parabolic equation driven by multiplicative noise is analyzed. The state equation is discretized by the continuous piecewise linear element method in space and by the backward Euler scheme in time. The convergence rate $ O(τ^{1/2} + h^2) $ is rigorously derived.
Numerical methods for the optimal transport problem is an active area of research. Recent work of Kitagawa and Abedin shows that the solution of a time-dependent equation converges exponentially fast as time goes to infinity to the solution of the optimal transport problem. This suggests a fast numerical algorithm for computing optimal maps; we investigate such an algorithm here in the 1-dimensional case. Specifically, we use a finite difference scheme to solve the time-dependent optimal transport problem and carry out an error analysis of the scheme. A collection of numerical examples is also…
The existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to dynamical low-rank evolution problems for parabolic partial differential equations in two spatial dimensions is shown, covering also non-diagonal diffusion in the elliptic part. The proof is based on a variational time-stepping scheme on the low-rank manifold. Moreover, this scheme is shown to be closely related to practical methods for computing such low-rank evolutions.
We present a stochastic numerical method for solving fully non-linear free boundary problems of parabolic type and provide a rate of convergence under reasonable conditions on the non-linearity.
We present a method for the numerical approximation of distributed optimal control problems constrained by parabolic partial differential equations. We complement the first-order optimality condition by a recently developed space-time variational formulation of parabolic equations which is coercive in the energy norm, and a Lagrangian multiplier. Our final formulation fulfills the Babuška-Brezzi conditions on the continuous as well as discrete level, without restrictions. Consequently, we can allow for final-time desired states, and obtain an a-posteriori error estimator which is efficient and…
The Keller-Segel equations are widely used for describing chemotaxis in biology. Recently, a new fully discrete scheme for this model was proposed in [46], mass conservation, positivity and energy decay were proved for the proposed scheme, which are important properties of the original system. In this paper, we establish the error estimates of this scheme. Then, based on the error estimates, we derive the finite-time blowup of nonradial numerical solutions under some conditions on the mass and the moment of the initial data.
We propose an approximation scheme for a class of semilinear parabolic equations that are convex and coercive in their gradients. Such equations arise often in pricing and portfolio management in incomplete markets and, more broadly, are directly connected to the representation of solutions to backward stochastic differential equations. The proposed scheme is based on splitting the equation in two parts, the first corresponding to a linear parabolic equation and the second to a Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The solutions of these two equations are approximated using, respectively, the Feynman-Kac …
The parallel full approximation scheme in space and time (PFASST) is a parallel-in-time integrator that allows to integrate multiple time-steps simultaneously. It has been shown to extend scaling limits of spatial parallelization strategies when coupled with finite differences, spectral discretizations, or particle methods. In this paper we show how to use PFASST together with a finite element discretization in space. While seemingly straightforward, the appearance of the mass matrix and the need to restrict iterates as well as residuals in space makes this task slightly more intricate. We der…
In this work we investigate the numerical identification of the diffusion coefficient in elliptic and parabolic problems using neural networks. The numerical scheme is based on the standard output least-squares formulation where the Galerkin finite element method (FEM) is employed to approximate the state and neural networks (NNs) act as a smoothness prior to approximate the unknown diffusion coefficient. A projection operation is applied to the NN approximation in order to preserve the physical box constraint on the unknown coefficient. The hybrid approach enjoys both rigorous mathematical fo…
This work presents and analyzes space-time finite element methods on fully unstructured simplicial space-time meshes for the numerical solution of parabolic optimal control problems. Using Babuška's theorem, we show well-posedness of the first-order optimality systems for a typical model problem with linear state equations, but without control constraints. This is done for both continuous and discrete levels. Based on these results, we derive discretization error estimates. Then we consider a semilinear parabolic optimal control problem arising from the Schlögl model. The associated nonlinear …

In this paper we extend the adaptive gradient descent (AdaGrad) algorithm to the optimal distributed control of parabolic partial differential equations with uncertain parameters. This stochastic optimization method achieves an improved convergence rate through adaptive scaling of the gradient step size. We prove the convergence of the algorithm for this infinite dimensional problem under suitable regularity, convexity, and finite variance conditions, and relate these to verifiable properties of the underlying system parameters. Finally, we apply our algorithm to the optimal thermal regulation…
This paper considers optimal control of fractional parabolic PDEs with both state and control constraints. The key challenge is how to handle the state constraints. Similarly, to the elliptic case, in this paper, we establish several new mathematical tools in the parabolic setting that are of wider interest. For example, existence of solution to the fractional parabolic equation with measure data on the right-hand-side. We employ the Moreau-Yosida regularization to handle the state constraints. We establish convergence, with rate, of the regularized optimal control problem to the original one.…
