We study a discretization technique for the parabolic fractional obstacle problem in bounded domains. The fractional Laplacian is realized as the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for a nonuniformly elliptic equation posed on a semi-infinite cylinder, which recasts our problem as a quasi-stationary elliptic variational inequality with a dynamic boundary condition. The rapid decay of the solution suggests a truncation that is suitable for numerical approximation. We discretize the truncation with a backward Euler scheme in time and, for space, we use first-degree tensor product finite elements. We present an error analysis based on different smoothness assumptions
A linearized numerical scheme is proposed to solve the nonlinear time fractional parabolic problems with time delay. The scheme is based on the standard Galerkin finite element method in the spatial direction, the fractional Crank-Nicolson method and extrapolation methods in the temporal direction. A novel discrete fractional Grönwall inequality is established. Thanks to the inequality, the error estimate of fully discrete scheme is obtained. Several numerical examples are provided to verify the effectiveness of the fully discrete numerical method.
For time-fractional parabolic equations with a Caputo time derivative of order $α\in(0,1)$, we give pointwise-in-time a posteriori error bounds in the spatial $L_2$ and $L_\infty$ norms. Hence, an adaptive mesh construction algorithm is applied for the L1 method, which yields optimal convergence rates $2-α$ in the presence of solution singularities.
Boundary value problem for a fractional power of an elliptic operator is considered. An integral representation by means of a standard solution problem for parabolic equations is used to solve such problems. Quadrature generalized Gauss-Laguerre formulas are constructed. We examine the effect of key parameters on the accuracy of the approximate solution: the number of nodes of the quadrature and fractional power of the operator. Computational experiments were performed to model two-dimensional problem with a fractional power of an elliptic operator.
The problem of determining the initial condition from noisy final observations in time-fractional parabolic equations is considered. This problem is well-known to be ill-posed and it is regularized by backward Sobolev-type equations. Error estimates of Holder type are obtained with a priori and a posteriori regularization parameter choice rules. The proposed regularization method results in a stable noniterative numerical scheme. The theoretical error estimates are confirmed by numerical tests for one- and two-dimensional equations
We study the parabolic $p$-Laplacian system in a bounded domain. We deduce optimal convergence rates for the space-time discretization based on an implicit Euler scheme in time. Our estimates are expressed in terms of Nikolskii spaces and therefore cover situations when the (gradient of) the solution has only fractional derivatives in space and time. The main novelty is that, different to all previous results, we do not assume any coupling condition between the space and time resolution $h$ and $τ$. The theoretical error analysis is complemented by numerical experiments.
Time-fractional parabolic equations with a Caputo time derivative are considered. For such equations, we explore and further develop the new methodology of the a-posteriori error estimation and adaptive time stepping proposed in [7]. We improve the earlier time stepping algorithm based on this theory, and specifically address its stable and efficient implementation in the context of high-order methods. The considered methods include an L1-2 method and continuous collocation methods of arbitrary order, for which adaptive temporal meshes are shown to yield optimal convergence rates in the presen…
An initial-boundary value problem with a Caputo time derivative of fractional order $α\in(0,1)$ is considered, solutions of which typically exhibit a singular behaviour at an initial time. An L2-type discrete fractional-derivative operator of order $3-α$ is considered on nonuniform temporal meshes. Sufficient conditions for the inverse-monotonicity of this operator are established, which yields sharp pointwise-in-time error bounds on quasi-graded temporal meshes with arbitrary degree of grading. In particular, those results imply that milder (compared to the optimal) grading yields optimal con…
We obtain regularity results in weighted Sobolev spaces for the solution of the obstacle problem for the integral fractional Laplacian. The weight is a power of the distance to the boundary. These bounds then serve us as a guide in the design and analysis of an optimal finite element scheme over graded meshes.
We apply the Monte Carlo method to solving the Dirichlet problem of linear parabolic equations with fractional Laplacian. This method exploit- s the idea of weak approximation of related stochastic differential equations driven by the symmetric stable Lévy process with jumps. We utilize the jump- adapted scheme to approximate Lévy process which gives exact exit time to the boundary. When the solution has low regularity, we establish a numeri- cal scheme by removing the small jumps of the Lévy process and then show the convergence order. When the solution has higher regularity, we build up a hi…
We present a unified framework to efficiently approximate solutions to fractional diffusion problems of stationary and parabolic type. After discretization, we can take the point of view that the solution is obtained by a matrix-vector product of the form $f^{\boldsymbolτ}(L)\mathbf{b}$, where $L$ is the discretization matrix of the spatial operator, $\mathbf{b}$ a prescribed vector, and $f^{\boldsymbolτ}$ a parametric function, such as the fractional power or the Mittag-Leffler function. In the abstract framework of Stieltjes and complete Bernstein functions, to which the functions we are int…
The backwards diffusion equation is one of the classical ill-posed inverse problems, related to a wide range of applications, and has been extensively studied over the last 50 years. One of the first methods was that of {\it quasireversibility\/} whereby the parabolic operator is replaced by a differential operator for which the backwards problem in time is well posed. This is in fact the direction we will take but will do so with a nonlocal operator; an equation of fractional order in time for which the backwards problem is known to be ``almost well posed.'' We shall look at various possible …
This paper considers optimal control of fractional parabolic PDEs with both state and control constraints. The key challenge is how to handle the state constraints. Similarly, to the elliptic case, in this paper, we establish several new mathematical tools in the parabolic setting that are of wider interest. For example, existence of solution to the fractional parabolic equation with measure data on the right-hand-side. We employ the Moreau-Yosida regularization to handle the state constraints. We establish convergence, with rate, of the regularized optimal control problem to the original one.…
