In this paper, we prove a Carleman estimate for fully-discrete approximations of parabolic operators in which the discrete parameters $h$ and $\triangle t$ are connected to the large Carleman parameter. We use this estimate to obtain relaxed observability inequalities which yield, by duality, controllability results for fully-discrete linear and semilinear parabolic equations.
In the discrete setting of one-dimensional finite-differences we prove a Carleman estimate for a semi-discretization of the parabolic operator $\partial_t-\partial_x (c\partial_x)$ where the diffusion coefficient $c$ has a jump. As a consequence of this Carleman estimate, we deduce consistent null-controllability results for classes of semi-linear parabolic equations.
We consider a fully-discrete approximations of 1-D heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions for which we provide a controllability result. The proof of this result is based on a relaxed observability inequality for the corresponding adjoint system. This is done by using a suitable Carleman estimate for such models where the discrete parameters $h$ and $Δt$ are connected to the one of the large Carleman parameters.
We show Carleman estimates, observability inequalities and null controllability results for parabolic equations with non smooth coefficients degenerating at an interior point.
In this paper we consider a degenerate population equation in divergence form depending on time, on age and on space and we prove a related null controllability result via Carleman estimates.
Carleman estimate for full-discrete approximations of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with dynamic boundary conditions and applications to controllability
In this paper, we study the null controllability of weakly degenerate coupled parabolic systems with two different diffusion coefficients and one control force. To obtain this aim, we develop first new global Carleman estimates for degenerate parabolic equations with weight functions different from the ones in the previous works.
We deal with a degenerate model describing the dynamics of a population depending on time, on age and on space. We assume that the degeneracy can occur at the boundary or in the interior of the space domain and we focus on null controllability problem. To this aim, we prove first Carleman estimates for the associated adjoint problem, then, via cut off functions, we prove the existence of a null control function localized in the interior of the space domain.
In this article we consider a control problem of a linear Euler-Bernoulli damped beam equation with potential in dimension one with periodic boundary conditions. We derive a new Carleman estimate for an adjoint of the equation under consideration. Then using a well known duality argument we obtain explicitly the control function which can be used to drive the solution trajectory of the control problem to zero state.
By using some deep tools from microlocal analysis, J. Le Rousseau and L. Robbiano (Invent. Math., 183 (2011), 245--336) established several Carleman estimates for parabolic operators with isotropic diffusion coefficients which have jumps at interfaces. In this paper, we revisit the same problem but for the general case of anisotropic diffusion coefficients. Our main tools are a pointwise estimate for parabolic operators and a suitable chosen weight function.
We consider a parabolic problem with degeneracy in the interior of the spatial domain, and we focus on controllability results through Carleman estimates for the associated adjoint problem. The novelty of the present paper is that the degeneracy is also in the interior of the control region, so that no previous result can be adapted to this situation.
In this work, we prove a Carleman estimate for a parabolic problem which has a dissipative degenerate term. The prove relies on choose a suitable weight function that change of sign inside the control domain.
This work is devoted to the strong unique continuation problem for second order parabolic equations with nonsmooth coefficients. Introduction and bibliography have been revised.
In this article, We investigate an inverse problem of determining the time-dependent source factor in parabolic integro-differential equations from boundary data. We establish the uniqueness and the conditional stability estimate of Hölder type for the inverse source problem in a cylindrical shaped domain. Our methodology is based on the Bukhgeim-Klibanov method by means of the Carleman estimate. Here we also derive the "time-like" Carleman estimate for parabolic integro-differential equations.
In this paper we prove a Hölder propagation of smallness for solutions to second order parabolic equations whose general anisotropic leading coefficient has a jump at an interface. We assume that the leading coefficient is Lipschitz continuous with respect to the parabolic distance on both sides of the interface. The main effort consists in proving a local Carleman estimate for this parabolic operator.
We establish Carleman estimates for singular/degenerate parabolic Dirichlet problems with degeneracy and singularity occurring in the interior of the spatial domain. Our results are completely new, since this situation is not covered by previous contributions for degeneracy and singularity on the boundary. In addition, we consider non smooth coefficients, thus preventing the use of standard calculations in this framework.
In this paper, we present a new Carleman estimate for the adjoint equations associated to a class of super strong degenerate parabolic linear problems. Our approach considers a standard geometric imposition on the control domain, which can not be removed in the general situations. Additionally, we also apply the aformentioned main inequality in order to investigate the null controllability of two nonlinear parabolic systems. The first application is concerned a global null controllability result obtained for some semilinear equations, relying on a fixed point argument. In the second one, a loc…
We consider non smooth general degenerate/singular parabolic equations in non divergence form with degeneracy and singularity occurring in the interior of the spatial domain, in presence of Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. In particular, we consider well posedness of the problem and then we prove Carleman estimates for the associated adjoint problem.
In this paper we investigate on a new strategy combining the logarithmic convexity (or frequency function) and the Carleman commutator to obtain an observation estimate at one time for the heat equation in a bounded domain. We also consider the heat equation with an inverse square potential. Moreover, a spectral inequality for the associated eigenvalue problem is derived.
For an initial-boundary value problem for a parabolic equation in the spatial variable $x=(x_1,.., x_n)$ and time $t$, we consider an inverse problem of determining a coefficient which is independent of one spatial component $x_n$ by extra lateral boundary data. We apply a Carleman estimate to prove a conditional stability estimate for the inverse problem. Also we prove similar results for the corresponding inverse source problem.
We consider a parabolic problem with degeneracy in the interior of the spatial domain and Neumann boundary conditions. In particular, we will focus on the well-posedness of the problem and on Carleman estimates for the associated adjoint problem. The novelty of the present paper is that for the first time it is considered a problem with an interior degeneracy and Neumann boundary conditions so that no previous result can be adapted to this situation. As a consequence new observability inequalities are established.
We prove null controllability for linear and semilinear heat equations with dynamic boundary conditions of surface diffusion type. The results are based on a new Carleman estimate for this type of boundary conditions.
The goal of this article is to show a local exact controllability to smooth (C2) trajectories for the 2-d density dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Our controllability result requires some geometric condition on the ow of the target trajectory, which is remanent from the transport equation satisfied by the density. The proof of this result uses a fixed point argument in suitable spaces adapted to a Carleman weight function that follows the ow of the target trajectory. Our result requires the proof of new Carleman estimates for heat and Stokes equations.
In this paper we present a null controllability result for a degenerate semilinear parabolic equation with first order terms. The main result is obtained after the proof of a new Carleman inequality for a degenerate linear parabolic equation with first order terms.
We are interested by the controllability of a fluid-structure interaction system where the fluid is viscous and incompressible and where the structure is elastic and located on a part of the boundary of the fluid's domain. In this article, we simplify this system by considering a linearization and by replacing the wave/plate equation for the structure by a heat equation. We show that the corresponding system coupling the Stokes equations with a heat equation at its boundary is null-controllable. The proof is based on Carleman estimates and interpolation inequalities. One of the Carleman estima…
This paper is dedicated to approximate controllability for Grushin equation on the rectangle $(x,y) \in (-1,1) \times (0,1)$ with an inverse square potential. This model corresponds to the heat equation for the Laplace-Beltrami operator associated to the Grushin metric on $\mathbb{R}^2$, studied by Boscain and Laurent. The operator is both degenerate and singular on the line $\{ x=0 \}$. The approximate controllability is studied through unique continuation of the adjoint system. For the range of singularity under study, approximate controllability is proved to hold whatever the degeneracy is.…
In this paper, we study some controllability and observability properties for a coupled system of time-discrete fourth- and second-order parabolic equations. This system can be regarded as a simplification of the well-known stabilized Kumamoto-Sivashinsky equation. Unlike the continuous case, we can prove only a relaxed observability inequality which yields a $ϕ(\triangle t)$-controllability result. This result tells that we cannot reach exactly zero but rather a small target whose size goes to 0 as the discretization parameter $\triangle t$ goes to 0. The proof relies on a known Carleman esti…
In this paper, we analyze the null controllability property for a degenerate parabolic equation involving memory terms with a locally distributed control. We first derive a null controllability result for a nonhomogeneous degenerate heat equation via new Carleman estimates with weighted time functions that do not blow up at t= 0. Then this result is successfully used with a classical fixed point to obtain null controllability for the initial memory system.
Let $s \in {\mathbb N}$, $T_1,T_2 \in {\mathbb R}$, $T_1<T_2$, and let $Ω, ω$ be bounded domains in ${\mathbb R}^n$, $n \geq 1$ such that $ω\subset Ω$ and the complement $Ω\setminus ω$ have no non-empty compact components in $Ω$. We investigate the problem of approximation of solutions to parabolic Lamé type system from the Lebesgue class $L^2(ω\times (T_1,T_2))$ in a cylinder domain $ω\times (T_1,T_2) \subset {\mathbb R}^{n+1}$ by more regular solutions in a bigger domain $Ω\times (T_1,T_2)$. As an application of the obtained approximation theorems we construct Carleman's formulas for recover…
In this paper, we prove the small-time global null-controllability of forward (resp. backward) semilinear stochastic parabolic equations with globally Lipschitz nonlinearities in the drift and diffusion terms (resp. in the drift term). In particular, we solve the open question posed by S. Tang and X. Zhang, in 2009. We propose a new twist on a classical strategy for controlling linear stochastic systems. By employing a new refined Carleman estimate, we obtain a controllability result in a weighted space for a linear system with source terms. The main novelty here is that the Carleman parameter…
This paper deals with the hierarchical control of the anisotropic heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions and drift terms. We use the Stackelberg-Nash strategy with one leader and two followers. To each fixed leader, we find a Nash equilibrium corresponding to a bi-objective optimal control problem for the followers. Then, by some new Carleman estimates, we prove a null controllability result.
In this article, we present a novel Carleman estimate for ultrahyperbolic operators, in $ \mathbb{R}^m_t \times \mathbb{R}^n_x $. Then, we use a special case of this estimate to obtain improved observability results for wave equations with time-dependent lower order terms. The key improvements are: (1) we obtain smaller observation regions compared to standard Carleman estimate results, and (2) we also prove observability when the observation point lies inside the domain. Finally, as a corollary of the observability result, we obtain improved interior controllability for the wave equation.
In this paper, we recover the boundary null controllability for the degenerate heat equation by analyzing the asymptotic behavior of an eligible family of state-control pairs $((u_{\varepsilon}, h_{\varepsilon}))_{\varepsilon >0}$ solving corresponding singularly perturbed internal null controllability problems. As in other situations studied in the literature, our approach relies on Carleman estimates and meticulous weak convergence results. However, for the degenerate parabolic case, some specific trace operator inequalities must be obtained, in order to justify correctly the passage to the …
We establish new Carleman estimates for the wave equation, which we then apply to derive novel observability inequalities for a general class of linear wave equations. The main features of these inequalities are that (a) they apply to a fully general class of time-dependent domains, with timelike moving boundaries, (b) they apply to linear wave equations in any spatial dimension and with general time-dependent lower-order coefficients, and (c) they allow for significantly smaller time-dependent regions of observations than allowed from existing Carleman estimate methods. As a standard applicat…
We consider a system of two parabolic equations with a forcing term present in one equation and a cubic coupling term in the other one. We prove that the system is locally null controllable.
The approach to Lipschitz stability for uniformly parabolic equations introduced by Imanuvilov and Yamamoto in 1998 based on Carleman estimates, seems hard to apply to the case of Grushin-type operators studied in this paper. Indeed, such estimates are still missing for parabolic operators degenerating in the interior of the space domain. Nevertheless, we are able to prove Lipschitz stability results for inverse coefficient problems for such operators, with locally distributed measurements in arbitrary space dimension. For this purpose, we follow a strategy that combines Fourier decomposition …
In this paper we focus on the null controllability problem for the heat equation with the so-called inverse square potential and a memory term. To this aim, we first establish the null controllability for a nonhomogeneous singular heat equation by a new Carleman inequality with weights which do not blow up at t=0. Then the null controllability property is proved for the singular heat equation with memory under a condition on the kernel, by means of Kakutani's fixed-point Theorem.
We consider a parabolic equation in a bounded domain $\OOO$ over a time interval $(0,T)$ with the homogeneous Neumann boundary condition. We arbitrarily choose a subboundary $Γ\subset \ppp\OOO$. Then, we discuss an inverse problem of determining a zeroth-order spatially varying coefficient by extra data of solution $u$: $u\vert_{Γ\times (0,T)}$ and $u(\cdot,t_0)$ in $\OOO$ with $t_0=0$ or $t=T$. First we establish a conditional Lipschitz stability estimate as well as the uniqueness for the case $t_0=T.$ Second, under additional condition for $Γ$, we prove the uniqueness for the case $t_0=0$. T…
In this paper, we shall prove a Carleman estimate for the so-called Zaremba problem. Using some techniques of interpolation and spectral estimates, we deduce a result of stabilization for the wave equation by means of a linear Neumann feedback on the boundary. This extends previous results from the literature: indeed, our logarithmic decay result is obtained while the part where the feedback is applied contacts the boundary zone driven by an homogeneous Dirichlet condition. We also derive a controllability result for the heat equation with the Zaremba boundary condition.
Let us consider a nonlinear degenerate reaction-diffusion equation with application to climate science. After proving that the solution remains nonnegative at any time, when the initial state is nonnegative, we prove the approximate controllability between nonnegative states at any time via multiplicative controls, that is, using as control the reaction coefficient.
This paper is addressed to studying the exact controllability for stochastic transport equations by two controls: one is a boundary control imposed on the drift term and the other is an internal control imposed on the diffusion term. By means of the duality argument, this controllability problem can be reduced to an observability problem for backward stochastic transport equations, and the desired observability estimate is obtained by a new global Carleman estimate. Also, we present some results about the lack of exact controllability, which show that the action of two controls is necessary. T…
In this paper, we study the global approximate multiplicative controllability for nonlinear degenerate parabolic Cauchy-Neumann problems. First, we will obtain embedding results for weighted Sobolev spaces, that have proved decisive in reaching well-posedness for nonlinear degenerate problems. Then, we show that the above systems can be steered in $L^2$ from any nonzero, nonnegative initial state into any neighborhood of any desirable nonnegative target-state by bilinear piecewise static controls. Moreover, we extend the above result relaxing the sign constraint on the initial date.
We consider a $2\times 2$ system of parabolic equations with first and zeroth coupling and establish a Carleman estimate by extra data of only one component without data of initial values. Then we apply the Carleman estimate to inverse problems of determining some or all of the coefficients by observations in an arbitrary subdomain over a time interval of only one component and data of two components at a fixed positive time $θ$ over the whole spatial domain. The main results are Lipschitz stability estimates for the inverse problems. For the Lipschitz stability, we have to assume some non-deg…
The goal of this article is to present a local exact controllability result for the 2 and 3-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations on a constant target trajectory when the controls act on the whole boundary. Our study is then based on the observability of the adjoint system of some linearized version of the system, which is analyzed thanks to a subsystem for which the coupling terms are somewhat weaker. In this step, we strongly use Carleman estimates in negative Sobolev spaces.
