A time-discrete approach avoids the assumption of an 'integration sense'. New path increments (in a short time step) are complete in the order of that step, and not Gaussian distributed when the noise is multiplicative; this eliminates an existing mismatch with the Fokker-Planck equations. By the Markov property these increments can be accumulated in consecutive intervals, to yield the solution for any times. In one dimension, more generally also under a certain condition, it is shown that the limit of continuous time exists and results in the 'anti-Ito' intrgral for the paths; the time step can therefore be diminished arbitrarily. The numerical computation of the paths is particularly accurate, due to increments that agree with the FPE by the mode, in addition to the mean. Under the above condition the FPE takes a simple form and can explicitly be solved for short times; this allows the computation of the density function for any times, by use of the Markov property.
In this paper, we focus on non-asymptotic bounds related to the Euler scheme of an ergodic diffusion with a possibly multiplicative diffusion term (non-constant diffusion coefficient). More precisely, the objective of this paper is to control the distance of the standard Euler scheme with decreasing step ({usually called Unadjusted Langevin Algorithm in the Monte Carlo literature}) to the invariant distribution of such an ergodic diffusion. In an appropriate Lyapunov setting and under {uniform} ellipticity assumptions on the diffusion coefficient, we establish (or improve) such bounds for Tota…
We study the convergence of Langevin-Simulated Annealing type algorithms with multiplicative noise, i.e. for $V : \mathbb{R}^d \to \mathbb{R}$ a potential function to minimize, we consider the stochastic differential equation $dY_t = - σσ^\top \nabla V(Y_t) dt + a(t)σ(Y_t)dW_t + a(t)^2Υ(Y_t)dt$, where $(W_t)$ is a Brownian motion, where $σ: \mathbb{R}^d \to \mathcal{M}_d(\mathbb{R})$ is an adaptive (multiplicative) noise, where $a : \mathbb{R}^+ \to \mathbb{R}^+$ is a function decreasing to $0$ and where $Υ$ is a correction term. Allowing $σ$ to depend on the position brings faster convergence…
Consider the Langevin process, described by a vector (position, momentum) in $\mathbb{R}^{d}\times\mathbb{R}^d$. Let $\mathcal O$ be a $\mathcal{C}^2$ open bounded and connected set of $\mathbb{R}^d$. We prove the compactness of the semigroup of the Langevin process absorbed at the boundary of the domain $D:=\mathcal{O}\times\mathbb{R}^d$. We then obtain the existence of a unique quasi-stationary distribution (QSD) for the Langevin process on $D$. We also provide a spectral interpretation of this QSD and obtain an exponential convergence of the Langevin process conditioned on non-absorption tow…
We provide a complete elaboration of the $L^2$-Hilbert space hypocoercivity theorem for the degenerate Langevin dynamics with multiplicative noise, studying the longtime behaviour of the strongly continuous contraction semigroup solving the abstract Cauchy problem for the associated backward Kolmogorov operator. Hypocoercivity for the Langevin dynamics with constant diffusion matrix was proven previously by Dolbeault, Mouhot and Schmeiser in the corresponding Fokker-Planck framework, and made rigorous in the Kolmogorov backwards setting by Grothaus and Stilgenbauer. We extend these results to …
One proves here the backward uniqueness of solutions to stochastic semilinear parabolic equations and also for the tamed Navier-Stokes equations driven by linearly multiplicative Gaussian noises. Applications to approximate controllability of nonlinear stochastic parabolic equations with initial controllers are given. The method of proof relies on the logarithmic convexity property known to hold for solutions to linear evolution equations in Hilbert spaces with self-adjoint principal part.
In this paper, we show the existence and uniqueness of a strong solution to stochastic 3D tamed Navier-Stokes equations driven by multiplicative Levy noise with periodic boundary conditions. Then we establish the large deviation principles of the strong solution on the state space $\mathcal{D}([0,T];\mathbb{H}^1)$, where the weak convergence approach plays a key role.
We study the convergence of Langevin-Simulated Annealing type algorithms with multiplicative noise, i.e. for $V : \mathbb{R}^d \to \mathbb{R}$ a potential function to minimize, we consider the stochastic equation $dY_t = - σσ^\top \nabla V(Y_t) dt + a(t)σ(Y_t)dW_t + a(t)^2Υ(Y_t)dt$, where $(W_t)$ is a Brownian motion, where $σ: \mathbb{R}^d \to \mathcal{M}_d(\mathbb{R})$ is an adaptive (multiplicative) noise, where $a : \mathbb{R}^+ \to \mathbb{R}^+$ is a function decreasing to $0$ and where $Υ$ is a correction term. This setting can be applied to optimization problems arising in Machine Learn…
We consider Gaussian multiplicative chaos measures defined in a general setting of metric measure spaces. Uniqueness results are obtained, verifying that different sequences of approximating Gaussian fields lead to the same chaos measure. Specialized to Euclidean spaces, our setup covers both the subcritical chaos and the critical chaos, actually extending to all non-atomic Gaussian chaos measures.
We consider the stochastic heat equation $$\frac{\partial Y_t(x)}{\partial t} = \frac{1}{2} Δ_x Y_t(x) + Y_{t-}(x)^β \dot{L}^α$$ with $t \ge 0$, $x \in \mathbb{R}$ and $L^α$ being an $α$-stable white noise without negative jumps. Under appropriate non-negative initial conditions, when $α\in (1,2)$ and $β\in (\frac{1}α, 1)$ we prove that weak uniqueness holds for the above using the approximating duality approach developed by Mytnik (Ann. Probab. (1998) 26 968-984).
We consider a class of semilinear Volterra type stochastic evolution equation driven by multiplicative Gaussian noise. The memory kernel, not necessarily analytic, is such that the deterministic linear equation exhibits a parabolic character. Under appropriate Lipschitz-type and linear growth assumptions on the nonlinear terms we show that the unique mild solution is mean-$p$ Hölder continuous with values in an appropriate Sobolev space depending on the kernel and the data. In particular, we obtain pathwise space-time (Sobolev-Hölder) regularity of the solution together with a maximal type bou…
We discuss the ergodic properties of quasi-Markovian stochastic differential equations, providing general conditions that ensure existence and uniqueness of a smooth invariant distribution and exponential convergence of the evolution operator in suitably weighted $L^{\infty}$ spaces, which implies the validity of central limit theorem for the respective solution processes. The main new result is an ergodicity condition for the generalized Langevin equation with configuration-dependent noise and (non-)conservative force.
We study the statistically invariant structures of the nonlinear generalized Langevin equation (GLE) with a power-law memory kernel. For a broad class of memory kernels, including those in the subdiffusive regime, we construct solutions of the GLE using a Gibbsian framework, which does not rely on existing Markovian approximations. Moreover, we provide conditions on the decay of the memory to ensure uniqueness of statistically steady states, generalizing previous known results for the GLE under particular kernels as a sum of exponentials.
We prove pathwise uniqueness and strong existence of solutions for stochastic reaction-diffusion systems with locally Lipschitz continuous reaction term of polynomial growth and Hölder continuous multiplicative noise. Under additional assumptions on the coefficients, we also prove positivity of the solutions.
The definition and manipulation of Langevin equations with multiplicative white noise require special care (one has to specify the time discretisation and a stochastic chain rule has to be used to perform changes of variables). While discretisation-scheme transformations and non-linear changes of variable can be safely performed on the Langevin equation, these same transformations lead to inconsistencies in its path-integral representation. We identify their origin and we show how to extend the well-known Itō prescription ($dB^2=dt$) in a way that defines a modified stochastic calculus to be u…
We investigate the regularizing effect of certain additive continuous perturbations on SDEs with multiplicative fractional Brownian motion (fBm). Traditionally, a Lipschitz requirement on the drift and diffusion coefficients is imposed to ensure existence and uniqueness of the SDE. We show that suitable perturbations restore existence, uniqueness and regularity of the flow for the resulting equation, even when both the drift and the diffusion coefficients are distributional, thus extending the program of regularization by noise to the case of multiplicative SDEs. Our method relies on a combina…
We consider strong uniqueness and thus also existence of strong solutions for the stochastic heat equation with a multiplicative colored noise term. Here, the noise is white in time and colored in q dimensional space ($q \geq 1$) with a singular correlation kernel. The noise coefficient is Hölder continuous in the solution. We discuss improvements of the sufficient conditions obtained in Mytnik, Perkins and Sturm (2006) that relate the Hölder coefficient with the singularity of the correlation kernel of the noise. For this we use new ideas of Mytnik and Perkins (2011) who treat the case of str…
A stochastic affine evolution equation with bilinear noise term is studied where the driving process is a real-valued fractional Brownian motion. Stochastic integration is understood in the Skorokhod sense. Existence and uniqueness of weak solution is proved and some results on the large time dynamics are obtained
We establish the existence and uniqueness of solutions to an abstract nonlinear equation driven by a multiplicative noise of Lévy type, which covers many hydrodynamical models including 2D Navier-Stokes equations, 2D MHD equations, the 2D Magnetic Bernard problem, and several Shell models of turbulence. In the existing literature on this topic, besides the classical Lipschitz and one sided linear growth conditions, other assumptions, which might be untypical, are also required on the coefficients of the stochastic perturbations. This paper is to get rid of these untypical assumptions. Our assu…
We prove pathwise uniqueness for solutions of parabolic stochastic pde's with multiplicative white noise if the coefficient is Hölder continuous of index $γ>3/4$. The method of proof is an infinite-dimensional version of the Yamada-Watanabe argument for ordinary stochastic differential equations.
Semilinear stochastic evolution equations with multiplicative Poisson noise and monotone nonlinear drift are considered. We do not impose coercivity conditions on coefficients. A novel method of proof for establishing existence and uniqueness of the mild solution is proposed. Examples on stochastic partial differential equations and stochastic delay differential equations are provided to demonstrate the theory developed.
We consider the existence and pathwise uniqueness of the stochastic heat equation with a multiplicative colored noise term on IR^d for d greater or equal to 1. We focus on the case of non-Lipschitz noise coefficients and singular spatial noise correlations. In the course of the proof a new result on Hoelder continuity of the solutions near zero is established.
Existence, uniqueness and non-explosion of the mild solution are proved for a class of semi-linear functional SPDEs with multiplicative noise and Dini continuous drifts. In the finite-dimensional and bounded time delay setting, the log-Harnack inequality and $L^2$-gradient estimate are derived. As the Markov semigroup is associated to the functional (segment) solution of the equation, one needs to make analysis on the path space of the solution in the time interval of delay.
In this paper we prove several results related to the existence and uniqueness of solution to coupled highly nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations (PDEs). These equations are motivated by the dynamics of nematic liquid crystals under the influence of stochastic external forces. Firstly, we prove the existence of global weak solution (in sense of both stochastic analysis and PDEs). We show the pathwise uniqueness of the solution in 2D domain. Secondly, we establish the existence and uniqueness of local maximal solution which is strong in sense of both PDEs and stochastic analysis.…
We consider the Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb R^d$ ($d=2,3$) with a stochastic forcing term which is white noise in time and coloured in space; the spatial covariance of the noise is not too regular, so Itô calculus cannot be applied in the space of finite energy vector fields. We prove existence of weak solutions for $d=2,3$ and pathwise uniqueness for $d=2$.
We present general existence and uniqueness results for marked models with pair interactions, exemplified through Gibbs point processes on path space. More precisely, we study a class of infinite-dimensional diffusions under Gibbsian interactions, in the context of marked point configurations: the starting points belong to $\mathbb{R}^d$, and the marks are the paths of Langevin diffusions. We use the entropy method to prove existence of an infinite-volume Gibbs point process and use cluster expansion tools to provide an explicit activity domain in which uniqueness holds.
We study the solutions of the stochastic heat equation driven by spatially inhomogeneous multiplicative white noise based on a fractal measure. We prove pathwise uniqueness for solutions of this equation when the noise coefficient is Hölder continuous of index $γ>1-\fracη{2(η+1)}$. Here $η\in(0,1)$ is a constant that defines the spatial regularity of the noise.
We establish well-posedness in the mild sense for a class of stochastic semilinear evolution equations with a polynomially growing quasi-monotone nonlinearity and multiplicative Poisson noise. We also study existence and uniqueness of invariant measures for the associated semigroup in the Markovian case. A key role is played by a new maximal inequality for stochastic convolutions in $L_p$ spaces.
We prove existence, uniqueness and Lipschitz dependence on the initial datum for mild solutions of stochastic partial differential equations with Lipschitz coefficients driven by Wiener and Poisson noise. Under additional assumptions, we prove Gateaux and Frechet differentiability of solutions with respect to the initial datum. As an application, we obtain gradient estimates for the resolvent associated to the mild solution. Finally, we prove the strong Feller property of the associated semigroup.
We prove non-uniqueness in law of the three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics system that is forced by random noise of an additive and a linear multiplicative type and has viscous and magnetic diffusion, both of which are weaker than a full Laplacian. We apply convex integration to both equations of velocity and magnetic fields in order to obtain the non-uniqueness in law in the class of probabilistically strong solutions.
We consider stochastic non-linear diffusion equations with a highly singular diffusivity term and multiplicative gradient-type noise. We study existence and uniqueness of non-negative variational solutions in terms of stochastic variational inequalities. We also show extinction in finite time with probability one. These kind of equations arise, e.g. in the use for simulation of image restoring techniques or for modeling turbulence.
Semilinear stochastic evolution equations with Lévy noise and monotone nonlinear drift are considered. The existence and uniqueness of the mild solutions in $L^p$ for these equations is proved and a sufficient condition for exponential asymptotic stability of the solutions is derived. The main tool in our study is an Itô type inequality for the $p$th power of stochastic convolution integrals in Hilbert spaces.
For the deterministic dyadic model of turbulence, there are examples of initial conditions in $l^2$ which have more than one solution. The aim of this paper is to prove that uniqueness, for all $l^2$-initial conditions, is restored when a suitable multiplicative noise is introduced. The noise is formally energy preserving. Uniqueness is understood in the weak probabilistic sense.
In this paper we are concerned with the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Slonczewski equation (LLS) that describes magnetisation of an inifnite nanowire evolving under current driven spin torque. The current brings into the system a multiplicative gradient noise that appears as a transport term in the equation. We prove the existence, uniqueness and regularity of pathwise solutions to this equation.
For a prescribed deterministic kinetic energy we use convex integration to construct analytically weak and probabilistically strong solutions to the 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations driven by a linear multiplicative stochastic forcing. These solutions are defined up to an arbitrarily large stopping time and have deterministic initial values, which are part of the construction. Moreover, by a suitable choice of different kinetic energies which coincide on an interval close to time 0, we obtain non-uniqueness.
A linear stochastic transport equation with non-regular coefficients is considered. Under the same assumption of the deterministic theory, all weak $L^\infty$-solutions are renormalized. But then, if the noise is nondegenerate, uniqueness of weak $L^\infty$-solutions does not require essential new assumptions, opposite to the deterministic case where for instance the divergence of the drift is asked to be bounded. The proof gives a new explanation why bilinear multiplicative noise may have a regularizing effect.
Existence and uniqueness of solutions to the stochastic heat equation with multiplicative spatial noise is studied. In the spirit of pathwise regularization by noise, we show that a perturbation by a sufficiently irregular continuous path establish wellposedness of such equations, even when the drift and diffusion coefficients are given as generalized functions or distributions. In addition we prove regularity of the averaged field associated to a Lévy fractional stable motion, and use this as an example of a perturbation regularizing the multiplicative stochastic heat equation.
In this paper, we develop a new general approach to the existence and uniqueness theory of infinite dimensional stochastic equations of the form dX+A(t)Xdt = XdW in (0;T)xH, where A(t) is a nonlinear monotone and demicontinuous operator from V to V', coercive and with polynomial growth. Here, V is a reflexive Banach space continuously and densely embedded in a Hilbert space H of (generalized) functions on a domain $O\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ and V' is the dual of V in the duality induced by H as pivot space. Furthermore, W is a Wiener process in H. The new approach is based on an operatorial refor…
The generalized Langevin equation (GLE) is a stochastic integro-differential equation that has been used to describe the velocity of microparticles in viscoelastic fluids. In this work, we consider the large-time asymptotic properties of a Markovian approximation to the GLE in the presence of a wide class of external potential wells. The qualitative behavior of the GLE is largely determined by its memory kernel $K$, which summarizes the delayed response of the fluid medium on the particles past movement. When $K$ can be expressed as a finite sum of exponentials, it has been shown that long-ter…
We study the asymptotic behavior of solutions to stochastic evolution equations with monotone drift and multiplicative Poisson noise in the variational setting, thus covering a large class of (fully) nonlinear partial differential equations perturbed by jump noise. In particular, we provide sufficient conditions for the existence, ergodicity, and uniqueness of invariant measures. Furthermore, under mild additional assumptions, we prove that the Kolmogorov equation associated to the stochastic equation with additive noise is solvable in $L_1$ spaces with respect to an invariant measure.
In this paper, we prove the existence and uniqueness of maximally defined strong solutions to SDEs driven by multiplicative noise on general space-time domains $Q\subset\mathbb{R}_+\times\mathbb{R}^d$, which have continuous paths on the one-point compactification $Q\cup\partial$ of $Q$ where $\partial \notin Q$ and $Q\cup\partial$ is equipped with the Alexandrov topology. If the SDE is of gradient type (see (2.5) below) we prove that under suitable Lyapunov type conditions the life time of the solution is infinite and its distribution has sub-Gaussian tails. This generalizes earlier work \cite…
This paper studies the stochastic heat equation with multiplicative noises of the form uW, where W is a mean zero Gaussian noise and the differential element uW is interpreted both in the sense of Skorohod and Stratonovich. The existence and uniqueness of the solution are studied for noises with general time and spatial covariance structure. Feynman-Kac formulas for the solutions and for the moments of the solutions are obtained under general and different conditions. These formulas are applied to obtain the Hölder continuity of the solutions. They are also applied to obtain the intermittency …
We study the solutions of the stochastic heat equation with multiplicative space-time white noise. We prove a comparison theorem between the solutions of stochastic heat equations with the same noise coefficient which is Hölder continuous of index $γ>3/4$, and drift coefficients that are Lipschitz continuous. Later we use the comparison theorem to get sufficient conditions for the pathwise uniqueness for solutions of the stochastic heat equation, when both the white noise and the drift coefficients are Hölder continuous.
Strong existence and pathwise uniqueness of solutions with $L^{\infty}$-vorticity of 2D stochastic Euler equations is proved. The noise is multiplicative and involves first derivatives. A Lagrangian approach is implemented, where a stochastic flow solving a nonlinear flow equation is constructed. Stability under regularization is also proved.
We consider a $p$-Laplace evolution problem with multiplicative noise on a bounded domain $D \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions for $1<p< \infty$. The random initial data is merely integrable. Consequently, the key estimates are available with respect to truncations of the solution. We introduce the notion of renormalized solutions for multiplicative stochastic $p$-Laplace equations with $L^1$-initial data and study existence and uniqueness of solutions in this framework.
We prove pathwise uniqueness for solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with conservative multiplicative noise on compact 3D manifolds. In particular, we generalize the result by Burq, Gérard and Tzvetkov (N. Burq, P. Gérard, and N. Tzvetkov. Strichartz inequalities and the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on compact manifolds. American Journal of Mathematics, 126 (3):569--605, 2004) to the stochastic setting. The proof is based on deterministic and stochastic Strichartz estimates and the Littlewood-Paley decomposition.
We study parabolic stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs), driven by two types of operators: one linear closed operator generating a $C_0-$semigroup and one linear bounded operator with Wick-type multiplication, all of them set in the infinite dimensional space framework of white noise analysis. We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions for this class of SPDEs. In particular, we also treat the stationary case when the time-derivative is equal to zero.
We consider a transport-diffusion equation forced by random noise of three types: additive, linear multiplicative in It$\hat{\mathrm{o}}$'s interpretation, and transport in Stratonovich's interpretation. Via convex integration modified to probabilistic setting, we prove existence of a divergence-free vector field with spatial regularity in Sobolev space and corresponding solution to a transport-diffusion equation with spatial regularity in Lebesgue space, and consequently non-uniqueness in law at the level of probabilistically strong solutions globally in time.
We consider the modified Surface Quasi-Geostrophic (mSQG) equation on the 2D torus $\mathbb{T}^2$, perturbed by multiplicative transport noise. The equation admits the white noise measure on $\mathbb{T}^2$ as the invariant measure. We first prove the existence of white noise solutions to the stochastic equation via the method of point vortex approximation, then, under a suitable scaling limit of the noise, we show that the solutions converge weakly to the unique stationary solution of the dissipative mSQG equation driven by space-time white noise. The weak uniqueness of the latter equation is …
The Dean-Kawasaki model consists of a nonlinear stochastic partial differential equation featuring a conservative, multiplicative, stochastic term with non-Lipschitz coefficient, and driven by space-time white noise; this equation describes the evolution of the density function for a system of finitely many particles governed by Langevin dynamics. Well-posedness for the Dean-Kawasaki model is open except for specific diffusive cases, corresponding to overdamped Langevin dynamics. There, it was recently shown by Lehmann, Konarovskyi, and von Renesse that no regular (non-atomic) solutions exist.…
In this paper we prove the local existence and uniqueness of solutions for a class of stochastic fractional partial differential equations driven by multiplicative noise. We also establish that for this class of equations adding linear multiplicative noise provides a regularizing effect: the solutions will not blow up with high probability if the initial data is sufficiently small, or if the noise coefficient is sufficiently large. As applications our main results are applied to various types of SPDE such as stochastic reaction-diffusion equations, stochastic fractional Burgers equation, stoch…
