Regarding the question of how idempotent elements affect reversible property of rings, we study a version of reversibility depending on idempotents. In this perspective, we introduce {\it right} (resp., {\it left}) {\it $e$-reversible rings}. We show that this concept is not left-right symmetric. Basic properties of right $e$-reversibility in a ring are provided. Among others it is proved that if $R$ is a semiprime ring, then $R$ is right $e$-reversible if and only if it is right $e$-reduced if and only if it is $e$-symmetric if and only if it is right $e$-semicommutative. Also, for a right $e$-reversible ring $R$, $R$ is a prime ring if and only if it is a domain. It is shown that the class of right $e$-reversible rings is strictly between that of $e$-symmetric rings and right $e$-semicommutative rings.
A ring $R$ is said to be i-reversible if for every $a,b$ $\in$ $R$, $ab$ is a non-zero idempotent implies $ba$ is an idempotent. It is known that the rings $M_n(R)$ and $T_n(R)$ (the ring of all upper triangular matrices over $R$) are not i-reversible for $n \geq 3$. In this article, we provide a non-trivial i-reversible subring of $M_n(R)$ when $n \geq 3$ and $R$ has only trivial idempotents. We further provide a maximal i-reversible subring of $T_n(R)$ for each $n\geq 3$, if $R$ is a field. We then give conditions for i-reversibility of Trivial, Dorroh and Nagata extensions. Finally, we give…
Let $R$ be a ring and $σ$ an endomorphism of $R$. In this note, we study skew polynomial rings and skew power series rings over idempotent reflexive rings and abelian rings. Also, we introduce the concept of right (resp., left) $σ$-idempotent reflexive rings which generalizes right (resp., left) idempotent reflexive rings and $σ$-abelian rings. Certain results are obtained as corollaries from our results.
Idempotents dominate the structure theory of rings. The Peirce decomposition induced by an idempotent provides a natural environment for defining and classifying new types of rings. This point of view offers a way to unify and to expand the classical theory of semiperfect rings and idempotents to much larger classes of rings. Examples and applications are included.
In this paper, we study the non trivial idempotents of the $2 \times 2$ matrix ring over the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Z}_{pqr}[x]$ for distinct primes $p, q $ and $r$ greater than $3$. We have classified all the idempotents of this matrix ring into several classes such that any idempotent must belong to one of these classes. This work is extension of the work done in $[1]$.
We study a ring containing a complete set of orthogonal idempotents as a generalized matrix ring via its Peirce decomposition. We focus on the case where some of the underlying bimodule homomorphisms are zero. Upper and lower triangular generalized matrix rings are pertinent examples of the class of rings which we study. The triviality of the particular bimodule homomorphisms motivates the introduction of three new types of idempotents, namely inner Peirce trivial idempotents, outer Peirce trivial idempotents and Peirce trivial idempotents. These idempotents provide the main tools in our inves…
In this paper, several equivalent conditions on the Drazin invertibility of product and difference of idempotents are obtained in a ring. Some results in Banach algebra are extended to the ring case.
We present some formulae for the Drazin inverse of difference and product of idempotents in a ring. A number of results of bounded linear operators in Banach spaces are extended to the ring case.
A ring $R$ is a UU ring if every unit is unipotent, or equivalently if every unit is a sum of a nilpotent and an idempotent that commute. These rings have been investigated in Călugăreanu \cite{C} and in Danchev and Lam \cite{DL}. In this paper, two generalizations of UU rings are discussed. We study rings for which every unit is a sum of a nilpotent and an idempotent, and rings for which every unit is a sum of a nilpotent and two idempotents that commute with one another.
A ring R is a strongly 2-nil-clean if every element in R is the sum of two idempotents and a nilpotent that commute. A ring R is feebly clean if every element in R is the sum of two orthogonal idempotents and a unit. In this paper, strongly 2-nil-clean rings are studied with an emphasis on their relations with feebly clean rings. This work shows new interesting connections between strongly 2-nil-clean rings and weakly exchange rings
We present new characterizations of the rings in which every element is the sum of two idempotents and a nilpotent that commute, and the rings in which every element is the sum of two tripotents and a nilpotent that commute. We prove that such rings are completely determined by the additive decompositions of their square elements.
We define the concepts of weakly precious and precious rings which generalize the notions of weakly clean and nil-clean rings. We obtain some fundamental properties of these rings. We also obtain certain subclasses of such rings and then offer new kinds of weakly clean rings and nil-clean rings.
Motivated by Hirano-Tominaga's work \cite{HT} on rings for which every element is a sum of two idempotents and by de Seguins Pazzis's results \cite{de} on decomposing every matrix over a field of positive characteristic as a sum of idempotent matrices, we address decomposing every matrix over a commutative ring as a sum of three idempotent matrices and, respectively, as a sum of three involutive matrices.
We study clean group rings and also the group rings whose every element is a sum of two units. We also prove that if R is an Abelian exchange ring and G is a locally finite group, then the group ring RG has stable range one.
A ring $R$ is (strongly) 2-nil-clean if every element in $R$ is the sum of two idempotents and a nilpotent (that commute). Fundamental properties of such rings are discussed. Let $R$ be a 2-primal ring. If $R$ is strongly 2-nil-clean, we show that $M_n(R)$ is 2-nil-clean for all $n\in {\Bbb N}$. We also prove that the matrix ring is 2-nil-clean for a strongly 2-nil-clean ring of bounded index. These provide many classes of rings over which every matrix is the sum of two idempotents and a nilpotent.
Let $\mathfrak{A}$ be a unital ring with a nontrivial idempotent. In this paper, it is shown that under certain conditions every multiplicative generalized Jordan $n$-derivation $Δ:\mathfrak{A}\rightarrow\mathfrak{A}$ is additive. More precisely, it is proved that $Δ$ is of the form $Δ(t)=μt+δ(t),$ where $μ\in\mathcal{Z}(\mathfrak{A})$ and $δ:\mathfrak{A}\rightarrow\mathfrak{A}$ is a Jordan $n$-derivation. The main result is then applied to some classical examples of unital rings with nontrivial idempotents such as triangular rings, matrix rings, prime rings, nest algebras, standard operator a…
In the present work, a procedure for determining idempotents of a commutative ring having a sequence of ideals with certain properties is presented. As an application of this procedure, idempotent elements of various commutative rings are determined. Several examples are included illustrating the main results.
Let $A_1,\ldots,A_s$ be unitary commutative rings which do not have non-trivial idempotents and let $A=A_1\oplus\cdots\oplus A_s$ be their direct sum. We describe all idempotents in the $2\times 2$ matrix ring $M_2(A[[X]])$ over the ring $A[[X]]$ of formal power series with coefficients in $A$ and in arbitrary set of variables $X$. We apply this result to the matrix ring $M_2({\mathbb Z}_n[[X]])$ over the ring ${\mathbb Z}_n[[X]]$ for an arbitrary positive integer $n$ greater than 1. Our proof is elementary and uses only the Cayley-Hamilton theorem (for $2\times 2$ matrices only) and, in the s…
We prove that every non-finitely generated projective module over the integral group ring of a polycyclic-by-finite group G is free if and only if G is polycyclic.
Let $\Re$ and $\Re'$ unital $2$,$3$-torsion free alternative rings and $φ: \Re \rightarrow \Re'$ be a surjective Lie multiplicative map that preserves idempotents. Assume that $\Re$ has a nontrivial idempotents. Under certain assumptions on $\Re$, we prove that $φ$ is of the form $ψ+ τ$, where $ψ$ is either an isomorphism or the negative of an anti-isomorphism of $\Re$ onto $\Re'$ and $τ$ is an additive mapping of $\Re$ into the centre of $\Re'$ which maps commutators into zero.
In [Comput. Math. Appl. 59 (2010) 764-778], Baksalary and Trenkler characterized some complex idempotent matrices of the form $(I-PQ)^†P(I-Q)$, $(I-QP)^†(I-Q)$ and $P(P+Q-QP)^†$ in terms of the column spaces and null spaces of $P$ and $Q$, where $P, Q\in \mathbb{C}^{\textsf{OP}}_n = \{L\in \mathbb{C}_{n,n}\ |\ L^2 = L = L^*\}$. We generalize these results from $\mathbb{C}_{n,n}$ to any *-reducing rings.
{Generalizing the notion of nil cleanness from \cite{D13}, in parallel to \cite{DM14}, we define the concept of {\it weak nil cleanness} for an arbitrary ring. Its comprehensive study in different ways is provided as well. A decomposition theorem of a weakly nil-clean ring is obtained. It is completely characterized when an abelian ring is {\it weakly nil-clean}.} It is also completely determined when a matrix ring over a division ring is weakly nil-clean.
We show that a ring $\,R\,$ has two idempotents $\,e,e'\,$ with an invertible commutator $\,ee'-e'e\,$ if and only if $\,R \cong {\mathbb M}_2(S)\,$ for a ring $\,S\,$ in which $\,1\,$ is a sum of two units. In this case, the "anti-commutator" $\,ee'+e'e\,$ is automatically invertible, so we study also the broader class of rings having such an invertible anti-commutator. Simple artinian rings $\,R\,$ (along with other related classes of matrix rings) with one of the above properties are completely determined. In this study, we also arrive at various new criteria for {\it general\} $\,2\times 2…
We gather some classical results and examples that show strict inclusion between the families of unital rings, rings with enough idempotents, rings with sets of local units, locally unital rings, s-unital rings and idempotent rings.
It is well-known that each left ideals in a matrix rings over a finite field is generated by an idempotent matrix. In this work we compute the number of left ideals in these rings, the number of different idempotents generating each left ideal, and give explicitly a set of idempotent generators of all left ideals of a given rank.
We describe isomorphisms between strongly triangular matrix rings that were defined earlier in Berkenmeier et al. (2000) as ones having a complete set of triangulating idempotents, and we show that the so-called triangulating idempotents behave analogously to idempotents in semiperfect rings. This study yields also a way to compute theoretically the automorphism groups of such rings in terms of corresponding automorphism groups of certain subrings and bimodules involved in their structure.
This paper introduces and studies nil-reversible rings wherein we call a ring R nil-reversible if the left and right annihilators of every nilpotent element of R are equal. Reversible rings (and hence reduced rings) form a proper subclass of nil-reversible rings and hence we provide some conditions for a nil-reversible ring to be reduced. It turns out that nil-reversible rings are abelian, 2-primal, weakly semicommutative and nil-Armendariz. Further, we observe that the polynomial ring over a nil-reversible ring R is not necessarily nil-reversible in general, but it is nil-reversible if R is A…
In this note we answer the question raised by Han et al. in J. Korean Math. Soc (2014) whether an idempotent isomorphic to a semicentral idempotent is itself semicentral. We show that rings with this property are precisely the Dedekind-finite rings. An application to module theory is given.
In this paper, we explore the nature of central idempotents of Schur rings over finite groups. We introduce the concept of a lattice Schur ring and explore properties of these kinds of Schur rings. In particular, the primitive, central idempotents of lattice Schur rings are completely determined. For a general Schur ring $S$, $S$ contains a maximal lattice Schur ring, whose central, primitive idempotents form a system of pairwise orthogonal, central idempotents in $S$. We show that if $S$ is a Schur ring with rational coefficients over a cyclic group, then these idempotents are always primitiv…
A ring R is a Zhou nil-clean ring if every element in R is the sum of two tripotents and a nilpotent that commute. In this paper, Zhou nil-clean rings are further discussed with an emphasis on their relations with polynomials, idempotents and 2- idempotents. any a \in R, there exists e 2 Z[a] such that a-e \in R is nilpotent and e^5 = 5e^3 -4e, if and only if for any a 2 R, there exist idempotents e; f; g; h 2 Z[a] and a nilpotent w such that a = e+f +g+h+w, if and only if for any a 2 R, there exist 2-idempotents e; f 2 Z[a] and a nilpotent w 2 R such that a = e + f + w, if and only if for any…
We obtain criteria for when a ring with enough idempotents is left/right artinian or noetherian in terms of local criteria defined by the associated complete set of idempotents for the ring. We apply these criteria to object unital category graded rings in general and, in particular, to the class of skew category algebras. Thereby, we generalize results by Nastasescu-van Oystaeyen, Bell, Park and Zelmanov from the group graded case to groupoid, and in some cases category, gradings.
We introduce the concept of a weak nil clean ring, a generalization of nil clean ring, which is nothing but a ring with unity in which every element can be expressed as sum or difference of a nilpotent and an idempotent. Further if the idempotent and nilpotent commute the ring is called weak* nil clean. We characterize all $n\in \mathbb{N}$, for which $\mathbb{Z}_n$ is weak nil clean but not nil clean. We show that if $R$ is a weak* nil clean and $e$ is an idempotent in $R$, then the corner ring $eRe$ is also weak* nil clean. Also we discuss $S$-weak nil clean rings and their properties, where…
In this article, we introduce the concept of weakly $I$-clean ring, for any ideal $I$ of a ring $R$. We show that, for an ideal $I$ of a ring $R$, $R$ is uniquely weakly $I$-clean if and only if $R/I$ is semi boolean and idempotents can be lifted uniquely weakly modulo $I$ if and only if for each $a\in R$, there exists a central idempotent $e\in R$ such that either $a-e\in I$ or $a+e\in I$ and $I$ is idempotent free. As a corollary, we characterize weakly $J$-clean ring. Also we study various properties of weakly $I$-clean ring.
Marks showed that $\mathbb{F}_2Q_8$, the $\mathbb{F}_2$ group algebra over the quaternion group, is a reversible nonsymmetric ring, then questioned whether or not this ring is minimal with respect to cardinality. In this work, it is shown that the cardinality of a minimal reversible nonsymmetric ring is indeed 256. Furthermore, it is shown that although $\mathbb{F}_2Q_8$ is a duo ring, there are also examples of minimal reversible nonsymmetric rings which are nonduo.
For a commutative ring $R$ with identity, a Specker $R$-algebra is a commutative unital $R$-algebra generated by a Boolean algebra of idempotents, each nonzero element of which is faithful. Such algebras have arisen in the study of $\ell$-groups, idempotent-generated rings, Boolean powers of commutative rings, Pierce duality, and rings of continuous real-valued functions. We trace the origin of this notion from early studies of subgroups of bounded integer-valued functions to a variety of current contexts involving ring-theoretic, topological, and homological aspects of idempotent-generated al…
The separability tensor element of a separable extension of noncommutative rings is an idempotent when viewed in the correct endomorphism ring; so one speaks of a separability idempotent, as one usually does for separable algebras. It is proven that this idempotent is full if and only the H-depth is 1 (H-separable extension). Similarly, a split extension has a bimodule projection; this idempotent is full if and only if the ring extension has depth 1 (centrally projective extension). Separable and split extensions have separability idempotents and bimodule projections in 1 - 1 correspondence vi…
We prove that if an involution in a ring is the sum of an idempotent and a nilpotent then the idempotent in this decomposition must be 1. As a consequence, we completely characterize weakly nil-clean rings introduced recently in [Breaz, Danchev and Zhou, Rings in which every element is either a sum or a difference of a nilpotent and an idempotent, J. Algebra Appl., DOI: 10.1142/S0219498816501486].
An element of a ring is unique clean if it can be uniquely written as the sum of an idempotent and a unit. A ring $R$ is uniquely $π$-clean if some power of every element in $R$ is uniquely clean. In this article, we prove that a ring $R$ is uniquely $π$-clean if and only if for any $a\in R$, there exists an $m\in {\Bbb N}$ and a central idempotent $e\in R$ such that $a^m-e\in J(R)$, if and only if $R$ is abelian; every idempotent lifts modulo $J(R)$; and $R/P$ is torsion for all prime ideals $P$ containing the Jacobson radical $J(R)$. Further, we prove that a ring $R$ is uniquely $π$-clean an…
We compute the rank of the group of central units in the integral group ring $\Z G$ of a finite strongly monomial group $G$. The formula obtained is in terms of the strong Shoda pairs of $G$. Next we construct a virtual basis of the group of central units of $\Z G$ for a class of groups $G$ properly contained in the finite strongly monomial groups. Furthermore, for another class of groups $G$ inside the finite strongly monomial groups, we give an explicit construction of a complete set of orthogonal primitive idempotents of $\Q G$. Finally, we apply these results to describe finitely many gene…
Let G be a finite group, let p be a prime number, and let K be a field of characteristic 0 and k be a field of characteristic p, both large enough. In this note we state explicit formulae for the primitive idempotents of K\otimes pp_k(G), where pp_k(G) is the ring of p-permutation kG-modules.
The paper develops further the theory of quandle rings which was introduced by the authors in a recent work. Orderability of quandles is defined and many interesting examples of orderable quandles are given. It is proved that quandle rings of left or right orderable quandles which are semi-latin have no zero-divisors. Idempotents in quandle rings of certain interesting quandles are computed and used to determine sets of maximal quandles in these rings. Understanding of idempotents is further applied to determine automorphism groups of these quandle rings. Also, commutator width of quandle ring…
For an acyclic quiver Q, we solve the Clebsch-Gordan problem for the projective representations by computing the multiplicity of a given indecomposable projective in the tensor product of two indecomposable projectives. Motivated by this problem for arbitrary representations, we study idempotents in the representation ring of Q (the free abelian group on the indecomposable representations, with multiplication given by tensor product). We give a general technique for constructing such idempotents and for decomposing the representation ring into a direct product of ideals, utilizing morphisms be…
We determine the blocks, i.e., the primitive central idempotents, of the bifree double Burnside ring $B^Δ(G,G)$ and the left-free double Burnside ring $B^{\trl}(G,G)$, as well as the primitive central idempotents of the algebras arising from scalar extension to $\QQ$.
A ring $R$ is nil-clean if every element in $R$ is the sum of an idempotent and a nilpotent. A ring $R$ is abelian if every idempotent is central. We prove that if $R$ is abelian then $M_n(R)$ is nil-clean if and only if $R/J(R)$ is Boolean and $M_n(J(R))$ is nil. This extend the main results of Breaz et al. ~\cite{BGDT} and that of Koşan et al.~\cite{KLZ}.
