For a commutative ring $R$ with identity, a Specker $R$-algebra is a commutative unital $R$-algebra generated by a Boolean algebra of idempotents, each nonzero element of which is faithful. Such algebras have arisen in the study of $\ell$-groups, idempotent-generated rings, Boolean powers of commutative rings, Pierce duality, and rings of continuous real-valued functions. We trace the origin of this notion from early studies of subgroups of bounded integer-valued functions to a variety of current contexts involving ring-theoretic, topological, and homological aspects of idempotent-generated algebras.
By de Vries duality [9], the category ${\sf KHaus}$ of compact Hausdorff spaces is dually equivalent to the category ${\sf DeV}$ of de Vries algebras. In [5] an alternate duality for ${\sf KHaus}$ was developed, where de Vries algebras were replaced by proximity Baer-Specker algebras. The functor associating with each compact Hausdorff space a proximity Baer-Specker algebra was described by generalizing the notion of a boolean power of a totally ordered domain to that of a de Vries power. It follows that ${\sf DeV}$ is equivalent to the category ${\sf PBSp}$ of proximity Baer-Specker algebras.…
A Boolean power S of a commutative ring R has the structure of a commutative R-algebra, and with respect to this structure, each element of S can be written uniquely as an R-linear combination of orthogonal idempotents so that the sum of the idempotents is 1 and their coefficients are distinct. In order to formalize this decomposition property, we introduce the concept of a Specker R-algebra, and we prove that the Boolean powers of R are up to isomorphism precisely the Specker R-algebras. We also show that these algebras are characterized in terms of a functorial construction having roots in t…
We investigate the possibility of constructing Kochen-Specker uncolorable sets of idempotent matrices whose entries lie in various rings, including the rational numbers, the integers, and finite fields. Most notably, we show that there is no Kochen-Specker coloring of the $n \times n$ idempotent integer matrices for $n \geq 3$, thereby illustrating that Kochen-Specker contextuality is an inherent feature of pure matrix algebra. We apply this to generalize recent no-go results on noncommutative spectrum functors, showing that any contravariant functor from rings to sets (respectively, topologic…
We generalize the Boolean power construction to the setting of compact Hausdorff spaces. This is done by replacing Boolean algebras with de Vries algebras (complete Boolean algebras enriched with proximity) and Stone duality with de Vries duality. For a compact Hausdorff space $X$ and a totally ordered algebra $A$, we introduce the concept of a finitely valued normal function $f:X\to A$. We show that the operations of $A$ lift to the set $FN(X,A)$ of all finitely valued normal functions, and that there is a canonical proximity relation $\prec$ on $FN(X,A)$. This gives rise to the de Vries powe…
There is an extensive recent literature on the graded, non-graded, prime, primitive, maximal ideals of Leavitt path algebras. In this introductory level survey, we will be giving an overview of different types of ideals and the correspondence between the lattice of ideals and the lattice of hereditary and saturated subsets of the graph over which the Leavitt path algebra is constructed.
This is a survey of the known properties of Iwasawa algebras, which are completed group rings of compact p-adic analytic groups with coefficients the ring Zp of p-adic integers or the field Fp of p elements. A number of open questions are also stated.
This is a survey of results that extend notions of the classical invariant theory of linear actions by finite groups on $k[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ to the setting of finite group or Hopf algebra $H$ actions on an Artin-Schelter regular algebra $A$. We investigate when $A^H$ is AS regular, or AS Gorenstein, or a "complete intersection" in a sense that is defined. Directions of related research are explored briefly.
This survey of the recent developments in the investigations of a Leavitt path algebra L of an arbitrary graph E over a field K consists of two parts. In the first part describes how very often a single graph property of E implies multiple ring properties of L, thus making Leavitt path algebras effective tools in constructing rings of various desirable properties. The second part describes methods of constructing simple modules over L and characterizes Leavitt path algebras all of whose simple modules possess some specific properties such as being flat, finitely presented, being graded, injecti…
In this paper we present some basic results of the Universal Algebra of $\mathcal{C}^\infty$-rings which were nowhere to be found in the current literature. The outstanding book of I. Moerdijk and G. Reyes,[24], presents the basic (and advanced) facts about $\mathcal{C}^\infty$-rings, however such a presentation has no universal algebraic "flavour". We have been inspired to describe $\mathcal{C}^\infty$-rings through this viewpoint by D. Joyce in [15]. Our main goal here is to provide a comprehensive material with detailed proofs of many known "taken for granted" results and constructions used…
A brief survey of some aspects of noetherian Hopf algebras is given, concentrating on structure, homology, and classification, and accompanied by a panoply of open problems.
Leibniz algebras are certain generalization of Lie algebras. In this paper we survey the important results in Leibniz algebras which are analogs of corresponding results in Lie algebras. In particular we highlight the differences between Leibniz algebras and Lie algebras.
Let L be the Leavitt path algebra of an arbitrary directed graph E over a field K. This survey article describes how this highly non-commutative ring L shares a number of the characterizing properties of a Dedekind domain or a Prüfer domain expressed in terms of their ideal lattices. Special types of ideals such as the prime, the primary, the irreducible and the radical ideals of L are described by means of the graphical properties of E. The existence and the uniqueness of the factorization of a non-zero ideal of L as an irredundant product of prime or primary or irreducible ideals is establis…
We give simple and unified proofs of the known stability and rigidity results for Lie algebras, Lie subalgebras and Lie algebra homomorphisms. Moreover, we investigate when a Lie algebra homomorphism is stable under all automorphisms of the codomain (including outer automorphisms).
This is a brief survey on the current state of play on the programs to classify infinite dimensional Hopf algebras of Gel'fand-Kirillov dimension one or two. We list a number of open questions and suggest directions for future work.
This paper presents an overview of the current state of knowledge in the field of equivariant map algebras and discusses some open problems in this area.
For the Lie algebra $\g$ of a connected infinite-dimensional Lie group~$G$, there is a natural duality between so-called semi-equicontinuous weak-*-closed convex Ad^*(G)-invariant subsets of the dual space $\g'$ and Ad(G)-invariant lower semicontinuous positively homogeneous convex functions on open convex cones in $\g$. In this survey, we discuss various aspects of this duality and some of its applications to a more systematic understanding of open invariant cones and convexity properties of coadjoint orbits. In particular, we show that root decompositions with respect to elliptic Cartan suba…
Recent work using the model theory of differentially closed fields to answer questions having to do with the Dixmier-Moeglin equivalence for (noncommutatve) finitely generated noetherian algebras, and for (commutative) finitely generated Poisson algebras, is here surveyed, with an emphasis on the model-theoretic and differential-algebraic-geometric antecedents.
In this paper, we review deformation, cohomology and homotopy theories of relative Rota-Baxter Lie algebras, which have attracted quite much interest recently. Using Voronov's higher derived brackets, one can obtain an $L_\infty$-algebra whose Maurer-Cartan elements are relative Rota-Baxter Lie algebras. Then using the twisting method, one can obtain the $L_\infty$-algebra that controls deformations of a relative \RB Lie algebra. Meanwhile, the cohomologies of relative Rota-Baxter Lie algebras can also be defined with the help of the twisted $L_\infty$-algebra. Using the controlling algebra ap…
