A Boolean power S of a commutative ring R has the structure of a commutative R-algebra, and with respect to this structure, each element of S can be written uniquely as an R-linear combination of orthogonal idempotents so that the sum of the idempotents is 1 and their coefficients are distinct. In order to formalize this decomposition property, we introduce the concept of a Specker R-algebra, and we prove that the Boolean powers of R are up to isomorphism precisely the Specker R-algebras. We also show that these algebras are characterized in terms of a functorial construction having roots in the work of Bergman and Rota. When R is indecomposable, we prove that S is a Specker R-algebra iff S is a projective R-module, thus strengthening a theorem of Bergman, and when R is a domain, we show that S is a Specker R-algebra iff S is a torsion-free R-module. For an indecomposable R, we prove that the category of Specker R-algebras is equivalent to the category of Boolean algebras, and hence is dually equivalent to the category of Stone spaces. In addition, when R is a domain, we show that the category of Baer Specker R-algebras is equivalent to the category of complete Boolean algebras, and hence is dually equivalent to the category of extremally disconnected compact Hausdorff spaces. For a totally ordered R, we prove that there is a unique partial order on a Specker R-algebra S for which it is an f-algebra over R, and show that S is equivalent to the R-algebra of piecewise constant continuous functions from a Stone space X to R equipped with the interval topology.
In the present work, a procedure for determining idempotents of a commutative ring having a sequence of ideals with certain properties is presented. As an application of this procedure, idempotent elements of various commutative rings are determined. Several examples are included illustrating the main results.
We prove that the variety V of commutative multiplicatively idempotent semirings satisfying x + y + xyz = x + y is generated by single semirings. Moreover, we describe a normal form system for terms in V and we show that the word problem in V is solvable. Although V is locally finite, it is residually big.
Motivated by Hirano-Tominaga's work \cite{HT} on rings for which every element is a sum of two idempotents and by de Seguins Pazzis's results \cite{de} on decomposing every matrix over a field of positive characteristic as a sum of idempotent matrices, we address decomposing every matrix over a commutative ring as a sum of three idempotent matrices and, respectively, as a sum of three involutive matrices.
The resultant plays a crucial role in (computational) algebra and algebraic geometry. One of the most important and well known properties of the resultant is that it is equal to the determinant of the Sylvester matrix. In 2008, Odagiri proved that a similar property holds over the tropical semiring if one replaces subtraction with addition. The tropical semiring belongs to a large family of algebraic structures called commutative idempotent semiring. In this paper, we prove that the same property (with subtraction replaced with addition) holds over an \emph{arbitrary\/} commutative idempotent …
Let $R$ be a commutative additively idempotent semiring. In this paper, some properties and characterizations for permanents of matrices over $R$ are established, and several inequalities for permanents are given. Also, the adjiont matrices of matriecs over $R$ are considered. Partial results obtained in this paper generalize the corresponding ones on fuzzy matrices, on lattice matrices and on incline matrices.
Constructing a fuzzy subset logic L with Boolean properties is notoriously difficult because under a handful of "reasonable" conditions, we have the following three debilitating constraints: (1) Bellman and Giertz in 1973 showed that if L is distributive, then it must be idempotent. (2) Dubois and Padre in 1980 showed that if L has the excluded middle or the non-contradiction property or both, then it must be non-idempotent. (3) Bellman and Giertz also demonstrated in 1973 that even if L is idempotent, then the only choice available for the (meet, join) logic operator pair is the (min, max) oper…
Here we characterize the linear operators that preserve rank of matrices over additively idempotent and multiplicatively cancellative semirings. The main results in this article generalize the corresponding results on the two element Boolean algebra and on the max algebra; and holds on max-plus algebra and some other tropical semirings.
For a commutative ring $R$ with identity, a Specker $R$-algebra is a commutative unital $R$-algebra generated by a Boolean algebra of idempotents, each nonzero element of which is faithful. Such algebras have arisen in the study of $\ell$-groups, idempotent-generated rings, Boolean powers of commutative rings, Pierce duality, and rings of continuous real-valued functions. We trace the origin of this notion from early studies of subgroups of bounded integer-valued functions to a variety of current contexts involving ring-theoretic, topological, and homological aspects of idempotent-generated al…
We prove that a commutative parasemifield S is additively idempotent provided that it is finitely generated as a semiring. Consequently, every proper commutative semifield T that is finitely generated as a semiring is either additively constant or additively idempotent. As part of the proof, we use the classification of finitely generated lattice-ordered groups to prove that a certain monoid associated to the parasemifield S has a distinguished geometrical property called prismality.
Spectral spaces, introduced by Hochster, are topological spaces homeomorphic to the prime spectra of commutative rings. In this paper we study spectral spaces in perspective of idempotent semirings which are algebraic structures receiving a lot of attention due to its several applications to tropical geometry. We first prove that a space is spectral if and only if it is the \emph{prime $k$-spectrum} of an idempotent semiring. In fact, we enrich Hochster's theorem by constructing a subcategory of idempotent semirings which is antiequivalent to the category of spectral spaces. We further provide…
The Lifting Idempotent Property ($LIP$) of ideals in commutative rings inspired the study of Boolean lifting properties in the context of other concrete algebraic structures ($MV$-algebras, commutative l-groups, $BL$-algebras, bounded distributive lattices, residuated lattices, etc.), as well as for some types of universal algebras (C. Muresan and the author defined and studied the Congruence Boolean Lifting Property ($CBLP$) for congruence modular algebras). A lifting ideal of a ring $R$ is an ideal of $R$ fulfilling $LIP$. In a recent paper, Tarizadeh and Sharma obtained new results on liftin…
We adapt the construction of the Grothendieck group associated to a commutative monoïd to handle idempotent monoïds. Our construction works for a restricted class of commutative monoïds, it agrees with the Grothendieck group construction in many cases and yields a hypergroup which solves the universal problem for morphisms to hypergroups. It gives the expected non-trivial hypergroup construction in the case of idempotent monoïds.
We show that, if S is a finite semiring, then the free profinite S-semimodule on a Boolean Stone space X is isomorphic to the algebra of all S-valued measures on X, which are finitely additive maps from the Boolean algebra of clopens of X to S. These algebras naturally appear in the logic approach to formal languages as well as in idempotent analysis. Whenever S is a (pro)finite idempotent semiring, the S-valued measures are all given uniquely by continuous density functions. This generalises the classical representation of the Vietoris hyperspace of a Boolean Stone space in terms of continuou…
By a "Boolean inverse semigroup" we mean an inverse semigroup whose semilattice of idempotents is a Boolean algebra. We study representations of a given inverse semigroup S in a Boolean inverse semigroup which are "tight" in a certain well defined technical sense. These representations are supposed to preserve as much as possible any trace of "Booleannes" present in the semilattice of idempotents of S. After observing that the Vagner-Preston representation is not tight, we exhibit a canonical tight representation for any inverse semigroup with zero, called the "regular representation". We then…
An element $a\in R$ is provided that there exists an idempotent $e\in R$ such that $a-e\in U(R), ae=ea$ and $eae\in J(eRe)$. In this article, we investigate strongly rad-clean matrices over a commutative local ring. We completely determine when a $2\times 2$ matrix over a commutative local ring is strongly rad-clean.
This article deals mostly with the following question: when is the classical ring of quotients of a commutative ring a ring of stable range 1? We introduce the concepts of a ring of (von Neumann) regular range 1, a ring of semihereditary range 1, a ring of regular range 1, a semihereditary local ring, a regular local ring. We find relationships between the introduced classes of rings and known ones, in particular, it is established that a commutative indecomposable almost clean ring is a regular local ring. A commutative any ring of idempotent regular range 1 is an almost clean ring. It is sho…
We generalize the Boolean power construction to the setting of compact Hausdorff spaces. This is done by replacing Boolean algebras with de Vries algebras (complete Boolean algebras enriched with proximity) and Stone duality with de Vries duality. For a compact Hausdorff space $X$ and a totally ordered algebra $A$, we introduce the concept of a finitely valued normal function $f:X\to A$. We show that the operations of $A$ lift to the set $FN(X,A)$ of all finitely valued normal functions, and that there is a canonical proximity relation $\prec$ on $FN(X,A)$. This gives rise to the de Vries powe…
The aim of the present paper is to extend the dualizing object approach to Stone duality to the non-commutative setting of skew Boolean algebras. This continues the study of non-commutative generalizations of different forms of Stone duality initiated in recent papers by Bauer and Cvetko-Vah, Lawson, Lawson and Lenz, Resende, and also the current author. In particular, we construct a series of dual adjunctions between the categories of Boolean spaces and skew Boolean algebras, unital versions of which are induced by dualizing objects ${0,1,..., n+1}$, $n\geq 0$. We describe Eilenberg-Moore cat…
Let $R$ be a commutative local finite ring. In this paper, we construct the complete set of pairwise orthogonal primitive idempotents of $R[X]/<g>$ where $g$ is a regular polynomial in $R[X]$. We use this set to decompose the ring $R[X]/<g>$ and to give the structure of constacyclic codes over finite chain rings. This allows us to describe generators of the dual code $\mathcal{C}^\bot$ of a constacyclic code $\mathcal{C}$ and to characterize non-trivial self-dual constacyclic codes over finite chain rings.
In this paper using the connections between some subvarieties of residuated lattices, we investigated some properties of the lattice of ideals in commutative and unitary rings. We give new characterizations for commutative rings $A$ in which $Id(A)$ is an MV-algebra, a Heyting algebra or a Boolean algebra and we establish connections between these types of rings. We are very interested in the finite case and we present summarizing statistics. We show that the lattice of ideals in a finite commutative ring of the form $A=% \mathbb{Z}_{k_{1}}\times \mathbb{Z}_{k_{2}}\times ...\times \mathbb{Z}% …
We extend Stone duality between generalized Boolean algebras and Boolean spaces, which are the zero-dimensional locally-compact Hausdorff spaces, to a non-commutative setting. We first show that the category of right-handed skew Boolean algebras with intersections is dual to the category of surjective etale maps between Boolean spaces. We then extend the duality to skew Boolean algebras with intersections, and consider several variations in which the morphisms are restricted. Finally, we use the duality to construct a right-handed skew Boolean algebra without a lattice section.
Let $A_1,\ldots,A_s$ be unitary commutative rings which do not have non-trivial idempotents and let $A=A_1\oplus\cdots\oplus A_s$ be their direct sum. We describe all idempotents in the $2\times 2$ matrix ring $M_2(A[[X]])$ over the ring $A[[X]]$ of formal power series with coefficients in $A$ and in arbitrary set of variables $X$. We apply this result to the matrix ring $M_2({\mathbb Z}_n[[X]])$ over the ring ${\mathbb Z}_n[[X]]$ for an arbitrary positive integer $n$ greater than 1. Our proof is elementary and uses only the Cayley-Hamilton theorem (for $2\times 2$ matrices only) and, in the s…
A classification of all four-dimensional power-commutative real division algebras is given. It is shown that every four-dimensional power-commutative real division algebra is an isotope of a particular kind of a quadratic division algebra. The description of such isotopes in dimension four and eight is reduced to the description of quadratic division algebras. In dimension four this leads to a complete and irredundant classification. As a special case, the finite-dimensional power-commutative real division algebras that have a unique non-zero idempotent are characterised.
In this article, we introduce the concept of weakly $I$-clean ring, for any ideal $I$ of a ring $R$. We show that, for an ideal $I$ of a ring $R$, $R$ is uniquely weakly $I$-clean if and only if $R/I$ is semi boolean and idempotents can be lifted uniquely weakly modulo $I$ if and only if for each $a\in R$, there exists a central idempotent $e\in R$ such that either $a-e\in I$ or $a+e\in I$ and $I$ is idempotent free. As a corollary, we characterize weakly $J$-clean ring. Also we study various properties of weakly $I$-clean ring.
A ring $R$ is nil-clean if every element in $R$ is the sum of an idempotent and a nilpotent. A ring $R$ is abelian if every idempotent is central. We prove that if $R$ is abelian then $M_n(R)$ is nil-clean if and only if $R/J(R)$ is Boolean and $M_n(J(R))$ is nil. This extend the main results of Breaz et al. ~\cite{BGDT} and that of Koşan et al.~\cite{KLZ}.
We prove that the category of left-handed strongly distributive skew lattices with zero and proper homomorphisms is dually equivalent to a category of sheaves over local Priestley spaces. Our result thus provides a non-commutative version of classical Priestley duality for distributive lattices and generalizes the recent development of Stone duality for skew Boolean algebras. From the point of view of skew lattices, Leech showed early on that any strongly distributive skew lattice can be embedded in the skew lattice of partial functions on some set with the operations being given by restrictio…
The Peirce decomposition of a Jordan algebra with respect to an idempotent is well known. This decomposition was taken one step further and generalized recently by Hall, Rehren and Shpectorov, withtheir introduction of {\it axial algebras}, and in particular {\it primitive axial algebras of Jordan type} (PJs for short). It turns out that these notions are closely related to $3$-transposition groups and vertex operator algebras. De Medts, Peacock, Shpectorov, and M. Van Couwenberghe generalized axial algebrasto {\it decomposition algebras} which, in particular, are not necessarily commutative. …
We introduce the notions of pre-morphism and pre-derivation for arbitrary non-associative algebras over a commutative ring $k$ with identity. These notions are applied to the study of pre-Lie $k$-algebras and, more generally, Lie-admissible $k$-algebras. Associating with any algebra $(A,\cdot)$ its sub-adjacent anticommutative algebra $(A,[-,-])$ is a functor from the category of $k$-algebras with pre-morphisms to the category of anticommutative $k$-algebras. We describe the commutator of two ideals of a pre-Lie algebra, showing that the condition (Huq=Smith) holds for pre-Lie algebras. This a…
An algebraic structure with two constants and one ternary operation, which is not completely commutative, is put forward to accommodate ternary Boolean algebras. When the ternary operation is interpreted as Church's conditioned disjunction, Boolean algebras are characterized as a subvariety. Different interpretations for the ternary operation lead to distinct subvarieties. Rings and near-rings of characteristic 2 are used to illustrate the procedure.
We investigate the algebra of a Hausdorff ample groupoid, introduced by Steinberg, over a commutative semiring S. In particular, we obtain a complete characterization of congruence-simpleness for such Steinberg algebras, extending the well-known characterizations when S is a field or a commutative ring. We also provide a criterion for the Steinberg algebra of the graph groupoid associated to an arbitrary graph to be congruence-simple. Motivated by a result of Clark and Sims, we show that, over the Boolean semifield, the natural homomorphism from the Leavitt path algebra to the Steinberg algebr…
An incline is an additively idempotent semiring in which the product of two elements is always less than or equal to either factor. By making use of prime numbers, this paper proves that A^{11} is less than or equal to A^5 for all 3x3 matrices A over an arbitrary commutative incline, thus giving an answer to an open problem "For 3x3 matrices over any incline (even noncommutative) is X^5 greater than or equal to X^{11}?", proposed by Cao, Kim and Roush in a monograph Incline Algebra and Applications, 1984.
A ring $R$ is said to be clean if each element of $R$ can be written as the sum of a unit and an idempotent. $R$ is said to be weakly clean if each element of $R$ is either a sum or a difference of a unit and an idempotent, and $R$ is said to be feebly clean if every element $r$ can be written as $r=u+e_1-e_2$, where $u$ is a unit and $e_1,e_2$ are orthogonal idempotents. Clearly clean rings are weakly clean rings and both of them are feebly clean. In a recent article (J. Algebra Appl. 17 (2018), 1850111(5 pages)), McGoven characterized when the group ring $\mathbb Z_{(p)}[C_q]$ is weakly clea…
In [8, 9] M. G. Corrales Garcia, D. M. Barquero, C. Martin Gonzalez, M. Siles Molina, J. F Solanilla Hernandez described the center of a Leavitt path algebra and characterized it in terms of the underlying graph. We offer a different characterization of the center. In particular, we prove that the Boolean algebra of central idempotents \ of a Leavitt path algebra of a finite graph is isomorphic to the Boolean algebra of finitary annihilator hereditary subsets of the graph.
We define a formal framework for the study of algebras of type Max-plus, Min-Plus, tropical algebras, and more generally algebras over a commutative idempotent semi-field. This work is motivated by the increasingly diversified use of these algebras which occur also in control theory, automata theory as well as in algebraic geometry, and in more specific ways in other parts of mathematics such as the theory of monoids. In this first article, we expecially re-examine linear algebra over idempotent semi-fields: the most delicate, but undoubtedly the most interesting point is the notion of a singu…
We use computer algebra to study the 512-dimensional associative algebra Q B_3, the rational monoid algebra of 3 x 3 Boolean matrices. We obtain a basis for the radical in bijection with the 42 non-regular elements of B_3. The center of the 470-dimensional semisimple quotient has dimension 14; we use a splitting algorithm to find a basis of orthogonal primitive idempotents. We show that the semisimple quotient is the direct sum of simple two-sided ideals isomorphic to d x d rational matrix algebras for d = 1, 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 6, 6, 7, 9, 9, 12. We construct the irreducible representations …
A ring $R$ is called strongly clean if every element of $R$ is the sum of a unit and an idempotent that commute. By {\rm SRC} factorization, Borooah, Diesl, and Dorsey \cite{BDD051} completely determined when ${\mathbb M}_n(R)$ over a commutative local ring $R$ is strongly clean. We generalize the notion of {\rm SRC} factorization to commutative rings, prove that commutative $n$-{\rm SRC} rings $(n\ge 2)$ are precisely the commutative local rings over which ${\mathbb M}_n(R)$ is strongly clean, and characterize strong cleanness of matrices over commutative projective-free rings having {\rm ULP…
We introduce an abstract definition of a Hamming space that generalizes standard Hamming spaces $( \mathbb{Z}/ 2 \mathbb{Z})^n $. We classify countable locally standard Hamming spaces and show that each of them can be realized as the Boolean algebra of idempotents of a Cartan subalgebra of a locally matrix algebra.
The purpose of this paper is to give a systematic study of two new classes of commutative nonassociative algebras, the so-called isospectral and medial algebras. An isospectral algebra $\mathbb{A}$ is a generic commutative nonassociative algebra whose idempotents have the same Peirce spectrum. A medial algebra is algebra with identity $(xy)(zw)=(xz)(yw)$. We show that these two classes are essentially coincide. We also prove that any medial spectral algebra is isomorphic to a certain isotopic deformation of the commutative associative quotient algebra $\mathbf{K}[z]/(z^n-1)$.

In ring theory, the lifting idempotent property (LIP) is related to some important classes of rings: clean rings, exchange rings, local and semilocal rings, Gelfand rings, maximal rings, etc. Inspired by LIP, there were defined lifting properties for other algebraic structures: MV-algebras, BL- algebras, residuated lattices, abelian l-groups, congruence distributive universal algebras, etc. In this paper we define a lifting property (LP) in quantales, structures that constitute a good abstraction of the lattices of ideals, filters or congruences. LP generalizes all the lifting properties existin…
Let $K$ be a field of characteristic zero, $\mathcal A$ a $K$-algebra and $δ$ a $K$-derivation of $\mathcal A$ or $K$-$\mathcal E$-derivation of $\mathcal A$ (i.e., $δ=\operatorname{Id}_A-ϕ$ for some $K$-algebra endomorphism $ϕ$ of $\mathcal A$). Motivated by the Idempotent conjecture proposed in [Z4], we first show that for every idempotent $e$ lying in both the kernel ${\mathcal A}^δ$ and the image $\operatorname{Im}δ\!:=δ({\mathcal A})$ of $δ$, the principal ideal $(e)\subseteq \operatorname{Im} δ$ if $δ$ is a locally finite $K$-derivation or a locally nilpotent $K$-$\mathcal E$-derivation …
