A log Calabi-Yau surface with maximal boundary, or Looijenga pair, is a pair $(Y,D)$ with $Y$ a smooth rational projective complex surface and $D=D_1+\dots + D_l \in |-K_Y|$ an anticanonical singular nodal curve. Under some positivity conditions on the pair, we propose a series of correspondences relating five different classes of enumerative invariants attached to $(Y,D)$:
1) the log Gromov-Witten theory of the pair $(Y,D)$,
2) the Gromov-Witten theory of the total space of $\bigoplus_i \mathcal{O}_Y(-D_i)$,
3) the open Gromov-Witten theory of special Lagrangians in a Calabi-Yau 3-fold determined by $(Y,D)$,
4) the Donaldson-Thomas theory of a symmetric quiver specified by $(Y,D)$, and
5) a class of BPS invariants considered in different contexts by Klemm-Pandharipande, Ionel-Parker, and Labastida-Marino-Ooguri-Vafa.
We furthermore provide a complete closed-form solution to the calculation of all these invariants.
Choosing a normal crossings anticanonical divisor of $\mathbb{P}^2$ leads to four log Calabi-Yau surfaces, three of which are Looijenga pairs. In this survey article, I describe how to count rational curves in these that intersect each component of the divisor in one point of maximal tangency.
In arXiv:2011.08830 we established a series of correspondences relating five enumerative theories of log Calabi-Yau surfaces, i.e. pairs $(Y,D)$ with $Y$ a smooth projective complex surface and $D=D_1+\dots +D_l$ an anticanonical divisor on $Y$ with each $D_i$ smooth and nef. In this paper we explore the generalisation to $Y$ being a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack with projective coarse moduli space of dimension 2, and $D_i$ nef $\mathbb{Q}$-Cartier divisors. We consider in particular three infinite families of orbifold log Calabi-Yau surfaces, and for each of them we provide closed form solutio…
The moduli space of stable relative maps to the projective line combines features of stable maps and admissible covers. We prove all standard Gromov-Witten classes on these moduli spaces of stable relative maps have tautological push-forwards to the moduli space of curves. In particular, the fundamental classes of all moduli spaces of admissible covers push-forward to tautological classes. Consequences for the tautological rings of the moduli spaces of curves include methods for generating new relations, uniform derivations of the socle and vanishing statements of the Gorenstein conjectures fo…
Inspired by his vanishing results of tautological classes and by Harer's computation of the virtual cohomological dimension of the mapping class group, Looijenga conjectured that the moduli space of smooth Riemann surfaces admits a stratification by affine subsets with a certain number of layers. Similarly, Roth and Vakil extended the conjecture to the moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces of compact type, of Riemann surfaces with rational tails and of Riemann surfaces with at most k rational components. As a consequence of Lefschetz's theorem, Roth-Vakil's conjecture would also imply that the pre…
We describe a compactification by stable pairs (also known as KSBA compactification) of the $4$-dimensional family of Enriques surfaces which arise as the $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-covers of the blow up of $\mathbb{P}^2$ at three general points branched along a configuration of three pairs of lines. Up to a finite group action, we show that this compactification is isomorphic to the toric variety associated to the secondary polytope of the unit cube. We relate the KSBA compactification considered to the Baily-Borel compactification of the same family of Enriques surfaces. Part of the KSBA boundary has …
We develop a theory for stable maps to curves with divisible ramification. For a fixed integer $r>0$, we show that the condition of every ramification locus being divisible by $r$ is equivalent to the existence of an $r$th root of a canonical section. We consider this condition in regards to both absolute and relative stable maps and construct natural moduli spaces in these situations. We construct an analogue of the Fantechi-Pandharipande branch morphism and when the domain curves are genus zero we construct a virtual fundamental class. This theory is anticipated to have applications to $r$-s…
In this article we define stable supercurves and super stable maps of genus zero via labeled trees. We prove that the moduli space of stable supercurves and super stable maps of fixed tree type are quotient superorbifolds. To this end, we prove a slice theorem for the action of super Lie groups on Riemannian supermanifolds and discuss superorbifolds. Furthermore, we propose a Gromov topology on super stable maps such that the restriction to fixed tree type yields the quotient topology from the superorbifolds and the reduction is compact. This would, possibly, lead to the notions of super Gromo…
The evaluation stack for minimal logarithmic stable maps is constructed, parameterizing families of standard log points in the target log scheme. This construction provides the ingredients necessary to define appropriate evaluation maps for minimal log stable maps and establish the logarithmic Gromov-Witten theory of a log-smooth Deligne- Faltings log scheme.
We analyze the relationship between two compactifications of the moduli space of maps from curves to a Grassmannian: the Kontsevich moduli space of stable maps and the Marian--Oprea--Pandharipande moduli space of stable quotients. We construct a moduli space which dominates both the moduli space of stable maps to a Grassmannian and the moduli space of stable quotients, and equip our moduli space with a virtual fundamental class. We relate the virtual fundamental classes of all three moduli spaces using the virtual push-forward formula. This gives a new proof of a theorem of Marian-Oprea-Pandha…
In this note we give a definition of stable maps into the classifying stack $\BGL_r$ of the general linear group. To support our belief that the definition is the correct one, we show that there are natural boundary morphisms between the moduli groupoids parameterizing stable maps to $\BGL_r$.
We prove a virtual localization formula for Bumsig Kim's space of logarithmic stable maps. The formula is closely related and can in fact recover the relative virtual localization formula of Graber and Vakil.
It is known that the main component of the Kontsevich's moduli space of elliptic stable maps is singular. There are two different desingularizations. One is Vakil-Zinger's desingularization and the other is the moduli space of logarithmic stable maps. When the degree is less then or equal to 3 and the target is $\mathbb{P}^{n}$, we show that the moduli space of logarithmic stable maps can be obtained by blowing up Vakil-Zinger's desingularization.
By using Oprea's Bialynicki-Birula decomposition for the stack of genus zero stable maps to flag manifolds. We calculate the Poincaré polynomial of the moduli space in degree one and degree two.
We prove that the orbifold desingularization of the moduli space of stable maps of genus g = 1 recently constructed by Vakil and Zinger has vanishing rational cohomology groups in odd degree k < 10.
Let $L\subset X$ be a not necessarily orientable relatively $Pin$ Lagrangian submanifold in a symplectic manifold $X$. Evaluation maps of moduli spaces of $J$-holomorphic disks with boundary in $L$ may not be relatively orientable. To deal with this problem, we introduce the notion of an orientor. Interactions between the natural operations on orientors are governed by orientor calculus. Orientor calculus gives rise to a family of orientors on moduli spaces of $J$-holomorphic stable disk maps with boundary in $L$ that satisfy natural relations. In a sequel, we use these orientors and relations…
Using the equivariant virtual cycle of the moduli space of stable maps to [C/Z_r], or equivalently, the vanishing of high-degree Chern classes of a certain vector bundle over the moduli space of stable maps to BZ_r, we derive relations in the Chow ring of Mbar_{g,n}(BZ_r,0). These push forward to yield tautological relations on Mbar_{g,n}.
In this paper, we prove the moduli spaces of genus zero stable log maps to a large class of wonderful compactifications are irreducible and unirational.
We present a localization proof of the fact that the cohomology of the moduli spaces of genus zero stable maps to projective spaces is entirely tautological. In addition, we obtain a description of a Bialynicki-Birula stratification in the context of Gathmann's moduli spaces of maps with prescribed contact order to a fixed hyperplane.
We introduce the notion of a logarithmic stable map from a minimal log prestable curve to a log twisted semi-stable variety of form $xy=0$. We study the compactification of the moduli spaces of such maps and provide a perfect obstruction theory, applicable to the moduli spaces of (un)ramified stable maps and stable relative maps. As an application, we obtain a modular desingularization of the main component of Kontsevich's moduli space of elliptic stable maps to a projective space.
We consider families of curve-to-curve maps that have no singularities except those of genus 0 stable maps and that satisfy a versality condition at each singularity. We provide a universal expression for the cohomology class Poincaré dual to the locus of any given singularity. Our expressions hold for any family of curve-to-curve maps satisfying the above properties.
Moduli spaces of stable maps to a smooth projective variety typically have several components. We express the virtual class of the moduli space of genus one stable maps to a smooth projective variety as a sum of virtual classes of the components. The key ingredient is a generalised functoriality result for virtual classes. We show that the natural maps from 'ghost' components of the genus one moduli space to moduli spaces of genus zero stable maps satisfy the strong push forward property. As a consequence, we give a cycle-level formula which relates standard and reduced genus one Gromov--Witte…
This paper provides a GIT construction of the Moduli Space of Stable Maps as a GIT quotient of the Graph Space by SL(2,C). As a corollary, we get a birational map from the 0-pointed Moduli Space to a projective variety.
Generators for the module of vector fields liftable over corank 1 stable complex analytic maps from an n-manifold to an (n+1)-manifold are found. This is applied to the classification of the singularities occuring in generic one-parameter families of maps between these spaces.
We show that the moduli space of genus zero stable maps is a real projective variety if the target space is a smooth convex real projective variety. We show that evaluation maps, forgetful maps are real morphisms. We analyze the real part of the moduli space.
In this paper we compute the multiple cover Gromov-Witten integrals (analog of the Aspinwall-Morrison formula) for the unramified compactification of the moduli space of stable maps to an embedded $\PO$ in a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ with the normal bundle $\mathcal{O}_{\PO}(-1) \bigoplus \mathcal{O}_{\PO}(-1)$.
We introduce a new compactification of the space of relative stable maps. This new method uses logarithmic geoemtry in the sense of Kato-Fontaine-Illusie rather than the expanded degeneration. The underlying structure of our log stable maps is stable in the usual sense.
Let X be a smooth projective Deligne-Mumford stack over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0. In this paper we construct the moduli stack of very twisted stable maps, extending the notion of twisted stable maps by Abramovich and Vistoli to allow for generic stabilizers on the source curves. We also consider the Gromov-Witten theory given by this construction.
We calculate a generating series for the virtual Euler-Poincaré characteristics of the spaces of stable maps of genus zero to flag spaces using the summation over trees technique.
We determine generators for the codimension 1 Chow group of the moduli spaces of genus zero stable maps to flag varieties G/P. In the case of SL flags, we find all relations between our generators, showing that they essentially come from $\bar M_{0,n}$. In addition, we analyze the codimension 2 classes on the moduli spaces of stable maps to Grassmannians and prove a new codimension 2 relation. This will lead to a partial reconstruction theorem for the Grassmannian of 2 planes.
We introduce and compute the class of a number of effective divisors on the moduli space of stable maps $\bar M_{0,0}(P^{r},d)$, which, for small d, provide a good understanding of the extremal rays and the stable base locus decomposition for the effective cone. We also discuss various birational models that arise in Mori's program, including the Hilbert scheme, the Chow variety, the space of $k$-stable maps, the space of branchcurves and the space of semi-stable sheaves.
Consider the (formal/analytic/algebraic) map-germs Maps(X,(k^p,o)). Let G be the group of right/contact/left-right transformations. I extend the following (classical) results from the real/complex-analytic case to the case of arbitrary field k. * A separable unfolding is locally trivial iff it is infinitesimally trivial. * An unfolding is locally versal iff it is infinitesimally versal. * The criterion of factorization of map-germs in zero characteristic. * Criteria of trivialization of unfoldings over affine base. * Fibration of K-orbits into A-orbits. * A map is locally stable iff it is infi…
In a previous paper, the author and David Swinarski constructed the moduli spaces of stable maps, \bar M_g,n(P^r,d), via geometric invariant theory (GIT). That paper required the base field to be the complex numbers, a restriction which this paper removes: here the coarse moduli spaces of stable maps are constructed via GIT over a more general base.
We present a new compactification $M(d,n)$ of the moduli space of self-maps of $\mathbb{CP}^1$ of degree $d$ with $n$ markings. It is constructed via GIT from the stable maps moduli space $\ ar M_{0,n}(\mathbb{CP}^1 \times \mathbb{CP}^1, (1,d))$. We show that it is the coarse moduli space of a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack and we compute its rational Picard group. Using the recursive boundary structure inherited from the stable maps space, we give an explicit algorithm for computing top-intersection numbers of divisors on $M(d,n)$. We also study the $m$-fold iteration map $M(d,n) \dashrightarro…
We construct moduli spaces of rational covers of an arbitrary smooth tropical curve in R^r as tropical varieties. They are contained in the balanced fan parametrizing tropical stable maps of the appropriate degree to R^r. The weights of the top-dimensional polyhedra are given in terms of certain lattice indices and local Hurwitz numbers.
We define two equivalent notions of twisted stable map from a curve to a Deligne-Mumford stack with projective moduli space, and we prove that twisted stable maps of fixed degree form a complete Deligne-Mumford stack with projective moduli space.
We define tautological relations for the moduli space of stable maps to a target variety. Using the double ramification cycle formula for target varieties of Janda-Pandharipande-Pixton-Zvonkine, we construct nontrivial tautological relations parallel to Pixton's double ramification cycle relations for the moduli of curves. Examples and applications are discussed.
Let $X$ be a projective normal toric variety and $T_0$ a rank one subtorus of the defining torus of $X$. We show that the normalization of the Chow quotient $X//T_0$, in the sense of Kapranov-Sturmfels-Zelevinsky, coarsely represents the moduli space of stable log maps to $X$ with discrete data given by $T_0\subset X$.
We describe an algebro-geometric approach to Vakil-Zinger's desingularization of the main component of the moduli of genus one stable maps to projective space. The new approach provides complete local structural results for this moduli space as well as for the desingularization of the entire moduli space and should fully extend to higher genera.
The moduli space of stable maps with divisible ramification uses $r$-th roots of a canonical ramification section to parametrise stable maps whose ramification orders are divisible by a fixed integer $r$. In this article, a virtual fundamental class is constructed while letting domain curves have a positive genus; hence removing the restriction of the domain curves being genus zero. We apply the techniques of virtual localisation and obtain the $r$-ELSV formula as an intersection of the virtual class with a pullback via the branch morphism.
We formulate a notion of stability for maps between polarised varieties which generalises Kontsevich's definition when the domain is a curve and Tian-Donaldson's definition of K-stability when the target is a point. We give some examples, such as Kodaira embeddings and fibrations. We prove the existence of a projective moduli space of canonically polarised stable maps, generalising the Kontsevich-Alexeev moduli space of stable maps in dimensions one and two. We also state an analogue of the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture in this setting, relating stability of maps to the existence of certain ca…
We give a short direct proof for the degeneration formula of Gromov-Witten invariants including its cycle version for degenerations with smooth singular locus in the setting of minimal/basic stable log maps of Abramovich-Chen, Chen, Gross-Siebert.
We characterize transversality, non-transversality properties on the moduli space of genus 0 stable maps to a semipositive symplectic manifold of dimension 4, when GW([point],...,[point]) is enumerative. In particular, we show that the intersection theoretic property depends on the existence of a critical point on a stable map.
In this paper, we present foundational material towards the development of a rigorous enumerative theory of stable maps with Lagrangian boundary conditions, ie stable maps from bordered Riemann surfaces to a symplectic manifold, such that the boundary maps to a Lagrangian submanifold. Our main application is to a situation where our proposed theory leads to a well-defined algebro-geometric computation very similar to well-known localization techniques in Gromov-Witten theory. In particular, our computation of the invariants for multiple covers of a generic disc bounding a special Lagrangian su…
We construct a moduli space of stable maps with fields associated to a triple $(X,E,s)$ of a projective variety (or a DM stack with projective moduli space) a vector bundle and a section. We show the class coincides up to a sign with the virtual fundamental class on the moduli space of stable maps to $Z=Z(s)\subset X$. We show that this gives a generalization of the Quantum Lefschetz hyperplane principle. This generalizes similar comparison results of Chang--Li, Kim--Oh and Chang--Li and presents a different approach from Chen--Janda--Webb.
We use the theory of twisted stable maps to Deligne-Mumford stacks to construct compactifications of the moduli space of pairs $(X \to C, S + F)$ where $X \to C$ is a fibered surface, $S$ is a sum of sections, $F$ is a sum of marked fibers, and $(X, S + F)$ is a stable pair in the sense of the minimal model program. This generalizes the work of Abramovich-Vistoli, who compactified the moduli space of fibered surfaces without marked fibers. Furthermore, we compare our compactification to Alexeev's space of stable maps and the KSBA compactification of stable pairs. As an application, we describe…
These are notes from a jointly taught class at the University of Chicago and lectures by the first author in Santa Cruz. Topics covered include: construction of moduli spaces of stable maps, Gromov-Witten invariants, quantum cohomology, and examples. These notes will appear in the proceedings of the 1995 Santa Cruz conference.
Given a semistable degeneration with a simple normal crossings central fiber, Abramovich-Chen-Gross-Siebert [3] proved a degeneration formula that relates the moduli spaces of stable maps in smooth fibers to certain moduli spaces of log-smooth maps in the central fiber. In this paper, we study the same problem from an analytic point of view. We prove that the limiting stable maps in the central fiber satisfy specific combinatorial and analytical conditions. Furthermore, we explain the deformation-obstruction theory of the moduli spaces arising from these conditions, derive a degeneration formu…
This informal note provides some elementary examples to motivate the local structural results of [1] on the moduli space of genus one stable maps to projective space. The hope is that these examples will be helpful for graduate students to learn this important subject.
We generalize the results of Chang-Li, Kim-Oh and Chang-Li on the moduli of $p$-fields to the setting of (quasi-)maps to complete intersections in arbitrary smooth Deligne-Mumford stacks with projective coarse moduli. In particular, we show that the virtual cycle of stable (quasi-)maps to a complete intersection can be recovered by the cosection localized virtual cycle of the moduli of $p$-fields of the ambient space.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve with genus $g\geq3$. Let $\mathcal{N}$ be the moduli space of stable rank two vector bundles on $X$ with a fixed determinant $\mathcal{O}_X(-x)$ for $x\in X$. In this paper, as a generalization of Kiem and Castravet's works, we study the stable maps in $\mathcal{N}$ with genus $0$ and degree $3$. Let $P$ be a natural closed subvariety of $\mathcal{N}$ which parametrizes stable vector bundles with a fixed subbundle $L^{-1}(-x)$ for a line bundle $L$ on $X$. We describe the stable map space $\mathbf{M}_0(P,3)$. It turns out that the space $\mathbf{M}_0(P,3)$ …
We study the Berkovich analytification of the space of genus $0$ logarithmic stable maps to a toric variety $X$ and present applications to both algebraic and tropical geometry. On algebraic side, insights from tropical geometry give two new geometric descriptions of this space of maps -- (1) as an explicit toroidal modification of $\overline M_{0,n}\times X$ and (2) as a tropical compactification in a toric variety. On the combinatorial side, we prove that the tropicalization of the space of genus $0$ logarithmic stable maps coincides with the space of tropical stable maps, giving a large new…
