The coherent potential approximation (CPA) within full counting statistics (FCS) formalism is shown to be a suitable method to investigate average electric conductance, shot noise as well as higher order cumulants in disordered systems. We develop a similar FCS-CPA formalism for phonon transport through disordered systems. As a byproduct, we derive relations among coefficients of different phonon current cumulants. We apply the FCS-CPA method to investigate phonon transport properties of graphene systems in the presence of disorders. For binary disorders as well as Anderson disorders, we calculate up to the $8$-th phonon transmission moments and demonstrate that the numerical results of the FCS-CPA method agree very well with that of the brute force method. The benchmark shows that the FCS-CPA method achieves $20$ times more speedup ratio. Collective features of phonon current cumulants are also revealed.
Diffuse phonon scattering strongly affects the phonon transport through a disordered interface. The often-used diffuse mismatch model assumes that phonons lose memory of their origin after being scattered by the interface. Using mode-resolved atomic Green's function simulation, we demonstrate that diffuse phonon scattering by a single disordered interface cannot make a phonon lose its memory and thus the applicability of diffusive mismatch model is limited. An analytical expression for diffuse scattering probability based on the continuum approximation is also derived and shown to work reasona…
It appears feasible with nanostructures to perform calorimetry at the level of individual thermal phonons. Here I outline an approach employing monocrystalline mesoscopic insulators, which can now be patterned from semiconductor heterostructures into complex geometries with full, three- dimensional relief. Successive application of these techniques also enables definition of integrated nanoscale thermal transducers; coupling these to a dc SQUID readout yields the requisite energy sensitivity and temporal resolution with minimal back action. The prospect of phonon counting opens intriguing expe…
The full counting statistics of the charge transport through an undoped graphene sheet in the presence of smooth disorder is studied. At the Dirac point both in clean and diffusive limits, transport properties of a graphene sample are described by the universal Dorokhov distribution of transmission probabilities. In the crossover regime, deviations from universality occur which can be studied analytically both on ballistic and diffusive sides. In the ballistic regime, we use a diagrammatic technique with matrix Green functions. For a diffusive system, the sigma model is applied. Our results ar…
The full counting statistics of a molecular level weakly interacting with a local phonon mode is derived. We find an analytic formula that gives the behavior of arbitrary irreducible moments of the distribution upon phonon excitation. The underlying competition between quasi-elastic and inelastic processes results in the formation of domains in parameter space characterized by a given sign in the jump of the irreducible moments. In the limit of perfect transmission, the corresponding distribution is distorted from Gaussian statistics for electrons to Poissonian transfer of holes above the inel…
We investigate quantum corrections to the conductivity due to the interference of electron-electron (electron-phonon) scattering and elastic electron scattering in weakly disordered conductors. The electron-electron interaction results in a negative $T^2 \ln T$-correction in a 3D conductor. In a quasi-two-dimensional conductor, $d < v_F/T$ ($d$ is the thickness, $v_F$ is the Fermi velocity), with 3D electron spectrum this correction is linear in temperature and differs from that for 2D electrons (G. Zala et. al., Phys. Rev.B {\bf 64}, 214204 (2001)) by a numerical factor. In a quasi-one-dimens…
Relaxation of soft modes (e.g. charge density in gated semiconductor heterostructures, spin density in the presence of magnetic field) slowed down by disorder may lead to giant enhancement of energy transfer (cooling power) between overheated electrons and phonons at low bath temperature. We show that in strongly disordered systems with time-reversal symmetry broken by external or intrinsic exchange magnetic field the cooling power can be greatly enhanced. The enhancement factor as large as $10^{2}$ at magnetic field $B \sim 10$ Tesla in 2D {\rm InSb} films is predicted. A similar enhancement …
We compute both electron- and phonon transmissions in thin disordered silicon nanowires. Our atomistic approach is based on tight-binding and empirical potential descriptions of the electronic and phononic systems, respectively. Surface disorder is modeled by including surface silicon vacancies. It is shown that the average phonon- and electron transmissions through long SiNWs containing many vacancies can be accurately estimated from the scattering properties of the isolated vacancies using a recently proposed averaging method [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 076803 (2007)]. We apply this averaging meth…
We study the electron-phonon relaxation (dephasing) rate in disordered semiconductors and low-dimensional structures. The relaxation is determined by the interference of electron scattering via the deformation potential and elastic electron scattering from impurities and defects. We have found that in contrast to the destructive interference in metals, which results in the Pippard ineffectiveness condition for the electron-phonon interaction, the interference in semiconducting structures substantially enhances the effective electron-phonon coupling. The obtained results provide an explanation …
We study the full-counting statistics of charges transmitted through a single-level quantum dot weakly coupled to a local Einstein phonon which causes fluctuations in the dot energy. An analytic expression for the cumulant generating function, accurate up to second order in the electron-phonon coupling and valid for finite voltages and temperatures, is obtained in the extended wide-band limit. The result accounts for nonequilibrium phonon distributions induced by the source-drain bias voltage, and concomitantly satisfies the fluctuation theorem. Extending the counting field to the complex plan…
Many-body localization (MBL) has attracted significant attention due to its immunity to thermalization, role in logarithmic entanglement entropy growth, and opportunities to reach exotic quantum orders. However, experimental realization of MBL in solid-state systems has remained challenging. Here we report evidence of a possible phonon MBL phase in disordered GaAs/AlAs superlattices. Through grazing-incidence inelastic X-ray scattering, we observe a strong deviation of the phonon population from equilibrium in samples doped with ErAs nanodots at low temperature, signaling a departure from ther…
We present a theoretical investigation for the full counting statistics of the Andreev tunneling through a quantum dot (QD) embedded between superconducting (SC) and normal leads in the presence of a strong on-site electron-phonon interaction using nonequilibrium Green function method. For this purpose, we generalize the dressed tunneling approximation (DTA) recently developed in dealing with inelastic tunneling in a normal QD system to the Andreev transport issue, which takes account of vibrational effect in evaluation of electronic tunneling self energy in comparison with other simple approa…
We study effects of strong impurities on the heat transfer in a coupled electron-phonon system in disordered graphene. A detailed analysis of the electron-phonon heat exchange assisted by such an impurity through the 'resonant supercollision' mechanism is presented. We further explore the local modification of heat transfer in a weakly disordered graphene due to a resonant scatterer and determine spatial profiles of the phonon and electron temperature around the scatterer under electrical driving. Our results are consistent with recent experimental findings on imaging resonant dissipation from…
We investigate electron and phonon transport through edge disordered zigzag graphene nanoribbons based on the same methodological tool of nonequilibrium Green functions. We show that edge disorder dramatically reduces phonon thermal transport while being only weakly detrimental to electronic conduction. The behavior of the electronic and phononic elastic mean free paths points to the possibility of realizing an electron-crystal coexisting with a phonon-glass. The calculated thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) values qualify zigzag graphene nanoribbons as a very promising material for thermoele…
Hierarchical material nanostructuring is considered to be a very promising direction for high performance thermoelectric materials. In this work we investigate thermal transport in hierarchically nanostructured silicon. We consider the combined presence of nanocrystallinity and nanopores, arranged under both ordered and randomized positions and sizes, by solving the Boltzmann transport equation using the Monte Carlo method. We show that nanocrystalline boundaries degrade the thermal conductivity more drastically when the average grain size becomes smaller than the average phonon mean free path…
Using the weak-localization method, we have measured the electron-phonon scattering times $τ_{ep}$ in Pd$_{60}$Ag$_{40}$ thick films prepared by DC- and RF-sputtering deposition techniques. In both series of samples, we find an anomalous $1/τ_{ep} \propto T^2\ell$ temperature and disorder dependence, where $\ell$ is the electron elastic mean free path. This anomalous behavior cannot be explained in terms of the current concepts for the electron-phonon interaction in impure conductors. Our result also reveals that the strength of the electron-phonon coupling is much stronger in the DC than RF s…
Charge and thermal conductivities are the most important parameters of carbon nanomaterials as candidates for future electronics. In this paper we address the effects of Anderson type disorder in long semiconductor carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to electron charge conductivity and lattice thermal conductivity using the atomistic Green function approach. The electron and phonon transmissions are analyzed as a function of the length of the disordered nanostructures. The thermal conductance as a function of temperature is calculated for different lengths. Analysis of the transmission probabilities as a …
Microscopic description of Raman spectra in nanopowders of nonpolar crystals is accomplished by developing the theory of disorder-induced broadening of optical vibrational eigenmodes. Analytical treatment of this problem is performed, and line shape and width are determined as functions of phonon quantum numbers, nanoparticle shape, size, and the strength of disorder. The results are found to be strongly dependent on either the broadened line is separated or it is overlapped with other lines of the spectrum. Three models of disorder, i.e. weak point-like impurities, weak smooth random potentia…
We have developed an efficient order-N real-space Kubo approach for the calculation of the phonon conductivity which outperforms state-of-the-art alternative implementations based on the Green's function formalism. The method treats efficiently the time-dependent propagation of phonon wave packets in real space, and this dynamics is related to the calculation of the thermal conductance. Without loss of generality, we validate the accuracy of the method by comparing the calculated phonon mean free paths in disordered carbon nanotubes (isotope impurities) with other approaches, and further illus…
We have measured directly the thermal conductance between electrons and phonons in ultra-thin Hf and Ti films at millikelvin temperatures. The experimental data indicate that electron-phonon coupling in these films is significantly suppressed by disorder. The electron cooling time $τ_ε$ follows the $T^{-4}$-dependence with a record-long value $τ_ε=25ms$ at $T=0.04K$. The hot-electron detectors of far-infrared radiation, fabricated from such films, are expected to have a very high sensitivity. The noise equivalent power of a detector with the area $1\mum^2$ would be $(2-3)10^{-20}W/Hz^{1/2}$, w…
We calculate the heat flux and electron-phonon thermal conductance in a disordered graphene sheet, going beyond a Fermi's Golden rule approach to fully account for the modification of the electron-phonon interaction by disorder. Using the Keldysh technique combined with standard impurity averaging methods in the regime $k_F l >> 1$ (where $k_F$ is the Fermi wavevector, l the mean free path), we consider both scalar potential (i.e. deformation potential) and vector potential couplings between electrons and phonons. We also consider the effects of electronic screening at the Thomas-Fermi level. …
Disorder-induced broadening of optical vibrational eigenmodes in nanoparticles of nonpolar crystals is studied numerically. The methods previously used to treat phonons in defectless particles are adjusted for numerical evaluation of the disordered problem. Imperfections in the form of Gaussian and binary disorders as well as surface irregularities are investigated thoroughly in a wide range of impurity concentrations and disorder strengths. For dilute and weak point-like impurities the regimes of separated and overlapped phonon levels are obtained and the behavior of the linewidth predicted t…
Phononless plasmon assisted thermally activated transport through a long disordered array of finite length quantum wires is investigated analytically. Generically strong electron plasmon interaction in quantum wires results in a qualitative change of the temperature dependence of thermally activated resistance in comparison to phonon assisted transport. At high temperatures, the thermally activated resistance is determined by the Luttinger liquid interaction parameter of the wires.
An efficient order$-N$ real-space Kubo approach is developed for the calculation of the thermal conductivity of complex disordered materials. The method, which is based on the Chebyshev polynomial expansion of the time evolution operator and the Lanczos tridiagonalization scheme, efficiently treats the propagation of phonon wave-packets in real-space and the phonon diffusion coefficients. The mean free paths and the thermal conductance can be determined from the diffusion coefficients. These quantities can be extracted simultaneously for all frequencies, which is another advantage in compariso…
The elastic collective modes of a moiré superlattice arise not from vibrations of a rigid crystal but from the relative displacement between the constituent layers. Despite their similarity to acoustic phonons, these modes, called phasons, are not protected by any conservation law. Here, we show that disorder in the relative orientation between the layers and thermal fluctuations associated with their sliding motion degrade the propagation of sound in the moiré superlattice. Specifically, the phason modes become overdamped at low energies and acquire a finite gap, which displays a universal de…
We propose an extension to the original result derived by Simoncelli et al. (https://doi.org/10.1038/s41567-019-0520-x) to encompass the effects of a space and time dependent heat source. Via a Fourier Transfrom, we obtain closed form expressions for the dynamics of the phonon population and coherence as a function of heat source.
Generation of non-Gaussian quantum states of macroscopic mechanical objects is key to a number of challenges in quantum information science, ranging from fundamental tests of decoherence to quantum communication and sensing. Heralded generation of single-phonon states of mechanical motion is an attractive way towards this goal, as it is, in principle, not limited by the object size. Here we demonstrate a technique which allows for generation and detection of a quantum state of motion by phonon counting measurements near the ground state of a 1.5 MHz micromechanical oscillator. We detect scatte…
The Full Counting Statistics (FCS) is studied for a one-dimensional system of non-interacting fermions with and without disorder. For two unbiased $L$ site lattices connected at time $t=0$, the charge variance increases as the natural logarithm of $t$, following the universal expression $<δN^2> \approx \frac{1}{π^2}\log{t}$. Since the static charge variance for a length $l$ region is given by $<δN^2> \approx \frac{1}{π^2}\log{l}$, this result reflects the underlying relativistic or conformal invariance and dynamical exponent $z=1$ of the disorder-free lattice. With disorder and strongly locali…
We study heat conduction mediated by longitudinal phonons in one dimensional disordered harmonic chains. Using scaling properties of the phonon density of states and localization in disordered systems, we find non-trivial scaling of the thermal conductance with the system size. Our findings are corroborated by extensive numerical analysis. We show that a system with strong disorder, characterized by a `heavy-tailed' probability distribution, and with large impedance mismatch between the bath and the system satisfies Fourier's law. We identify a dimensionless scaling parameter, related to the t…
We study the heat relaxation in current biased metallic films in the regime of strong electron-phonon coupling. A thermal gradient in the direction normal to the film is predicted, with a spatial temperature profile determined by the temperature-dependent heat conduction. In the case of strong phonon scattering the heat conduction occurs predominantly via the electronic system and the profile is parabolic. This regime leads to the linear dependence of the noise temperature as a function of voltage bias, in spite of the fact that all the dimensions of the film are large compared to the electron…
We propose a general framework that unifies the point of view of counting statistics of transmitted (fermionic) charges as it is commonly used in the quantum transport community to the point of view of counting statics of phonons (bosons) as it is known from the field of quantum optics. As a particular example, we study on the same footing the counting statistics of electrons transfered through a molecular junction and the corresponding population dynamics of the associated molecular vibrational mode. In the tunnel limit, non-perturbative results in the electron-phonon interaction are derived …
We investigate the influence of low-dimensionality and disorder in phonon transport in ultra-narrow armchair graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) using non-equilibrium Greens function (NEGF) simulation techniques. We specifically focus on how different parts of the phonon spectrum are influenced by geometrical confinement and line edge roughness. With the introduction of line edge roughness, the phonon transmission is reduced, but non-uniformly throughout the spectrum. We identify four distinct behaviors within the phonon spectrum in the presence of disorder: i) the low-energy, low-wavevector acoustic …
Attractive negative-$U$ interactions between electrons facilitated by strong electron-phonon interaction are common in highly polarizable and disordered materials such as amorphous chalcogenides, but there is no direct evidence for them in large-band-gap insulators. Here we report how such negative-$U$ centers are responsible for widespread insulator-to-metal transitions in amorphous HfO$_2$ and Al$_2$O$_3$ thin films with a 10$^9$-fold resistance drop. Triggered by a static hydraulic pressure or a 0.1 ps impulse of magnetic pressure, the transition can proceed at such low pressure that there …
We analyze the effect of electron-phonon coupling on the full counting statistics of a molecular junction beyond the lowest order perturbation theory. Our approach allows to take into account analytically the feedback between the non-equilibrium phonon and electronic distributions in the quantum regime. We show that even for junctions with high transmission and relatively weak electron-phonon coupling this feedback gives rise to increasingly higher nonlinearities in the voltage dependence of the cumulants of the transmitted charges distribution.
We performed direct calculations of carrier hopping rates in strongly disordered conjugated polymers based on the atomic structure of the system, the corresponding electronic states and their coupling to all phonon modes. We found that the dependence of hopping rates on distance and the dependence of the mobility on temperature are significantly different than the ones stemming from the simple Miller-Abrahams model, regardless of the choice of the parameters in the model. A new model that satisfactorily describes the hopping rates in the system and avoids the explicit calculation of electron-p…
We investigate the effects of phonon scattering on the electronic current noise through nanojunctions using the non-equilibrium Green's functions formalism extended to include the counting field. In the case of weak electron-phonon coupling and a single broad electronic level we derive an analytic expression for the current noise at arbitrary temperature and identify physically distinct contributions based on their voltage dependence. We apply our theory to the experimentally relevant case of a deuterium molecule placed in a break-junction and predict a significant inelastic contribution to th…
We analyze the nonequilibrium transport properties of a quantum dot with a harmonic degree of freedom (Holstein phonon) coupled to metallic leads, and derive its full counting statistics (FCS). Using the Lang-Firsov (polaron) transformation, we construct a diagrammatic scheme to calculate the cumulant generating function. The electron-phonon interaction is taken into account exactly, and the employed approximation represents a summation of a diagram subset with respect to the tunneling amplitude. By comparison to Monte Carlo data the formalism is shown to capture the basic properties of the st…
We introduce a technique to calculate thermal conductivity in disordered nanostructures: a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) solution of the elastic wave equation combined with the Green-Kubo formula. The technique captures phonon wave behavior and scales well to nanostructures that are too large or too surface disordered to simulate with many other techniques. We investigate the role of Rayleigh waves and surface disorder on thermal transport by studying graphenelike nanoribbons with free edges (allowing Rayleigh waves) and fixed edges (prohibiting Rayleigh waves). We find that free edges …
Optomechanical arrays are a promising future platform for studies of transport, many-body dynamics, quantum control and topological effects in systems of coupled photon and phonon modes. We introduce disordered optomechanical arrays, focusing on features of Anderson localization of hybrid photon-phonon excitations. It turns out that these represent a unique disordered system, where basic parameters can be easily controlled by varying the frequency and the amplitude of an external laser field. We show that the two-species setting leads to a non-trivial frequency dependence of the localization l…
Self-assembled supramolecular aggregates are excellent candidates for the design of efficient excitation transport devices. Both artificially prepared and natural photosynthetic aggregates in plants and bacteria present an important degree of disorder that is supposed to hinder excitation transport. Besides, molecular excitations couple to nuclear motion affecting excitation transport in a variety of ways. We present an exhaustive study of exciton dynamics in disordered nanorings with long-range interactions under the influence of a phonon bath and take the LH2 system of purple bacteria as a m…
Amorphous solids, as well as many disordered lattices, display remarkable universality in their low temperature acoustic properties. This universality is attributed to the attenuation of phonons by tunneling two-level systems (TLSs), facilitated by the interaction of the TLSs with the phonon field. TLS-phonon interaction also mediates effective TLS-TLS interactions, which dictates the existence of a glassy phase and its low energy properties. Here we consider KBr:CN, the archetypal disordered lattice showing universality. We calculate numerically, using conjugate gradients method, the effectiv…
Quantum transport in disordered systems is studied using a polaron-based master equation. The polaron approach is capable of bridging the results from the coherent band-like transport regime governed by the Redfield equation to incoherent hopping transport in the classical regime. A non-monotonic dependence of the diffusion coefficient is observed both as a function of temperature and system-phonon coupling strength. In the band-like transport regime, the diffusion coefficient is shown to be linearly proportional to the system-phonon coupling strength, and vanishes at zero coupling due to Ande…
Optical phonons in nanoparticles with the randomness of interatomic bonds are considered both analytically and numerically. For weak dilute disorder two qualitatively different regimes of separated and overlapped levels are observed, resembling the case of random atomic masses investigated previously. At stronger and/or more dense disorder, the particles become essentially inhomogeneous, thus constituting the minimal model to describe an amorphous phase, where the picture of vibrational modes becomes more subtle. We concentrate here on the experimentally relevant case of strong disorder locate…
Amorphous solids manifest puzzling effects of mysterious degrees of freedom that give rise to a heat capacity and phonon scattering in great excess over what would be expected for a solid that has a unique vibrational ground state. Of particular conceptual importance is the apparent near universality of phonon scattering in amorphous solids made by quenching a liquid. To rationalise this universality, scale-free scenarios have been proposed that either hinge on there being long-range interactions between bare structural degrees of freedom or that invoke long-range criticality stemming from the…
Short-range order in strongly disordered structures plays an important role in their heat conduction property. Using numerical and analytical methods, we show that short-range spatial correlation (with a correlation length of $Λ_{m}$) in the mass distribution of the one-dimensional (1D) alloy-like random binary lattice leads to a dramatic enhancement of the high-frequency phonon transmittance but also increases the low-frequency phonon opacity. High-frequency semi-extended states are formed while low-frequency modes become more localized. This results in ballistic heat conduction at finite len…
Using a simple quantum master equation approach, we calculate the Full Counting Statistics of a single electron transistor strongly coupled to vibrations. The Full Counting Statistics contains both the statistics of integrated particle and energy currents associated to the transferred electrons and phonons. A universal as well as an effective fluctuation theorem are derived for the general case where the various reservoir temperatures and chemical potentials are different. The first relates to the entropy production generated in the junction while the second reveals internal information of the…
We have used symmetric normal metal-insulator-superconductor (NIS) tunnel junction pairs, known as SINIS structures, for ultrasensitive thermometry in the temperature range 50 - 700 mK. By Joule heating the electron gas and measuring the electron temperature, we show that the electron-phonon (e-p) scattering rate in the simplest noble metal disordered thin films (Cu,Au) follows a $T^4$ temperature dependence, leading to a stronger decoupling of the electron gas from the lattice at the lowest temperatures. This power law is indicative e-p coupling mediated by vibrating disorder, in contrast to …
We provide a full quantum mechanical analysis of a weak energy measurement of a driven mechanical resonator. We demonstrate that measurements too weak to resolve individual mechanical Fock states can nonetheless be used to unambiguously detect the non-classical energy fluctuations of the driven mechanical resonator, i.e. "phonon shot noise". We also show that the third moment of the oscillator's energy fluctuations provides a far more sensitive probe of quantum effects than the second moment, and that measuring the third moment via the phase shift of light in an optomechanical setup directly y…
