Evaluation of diffuse mismatch model for phonon scattering at disordered interfaces

Diffuse phonon scattering strongly affects the phonon transport through a disordered interface. The often-used diffuse mismatch model assumes that phonons lose memory of their origin after being scattered by the interface. Using mode-resolved atomic Green's function simulation, we demonstrate that diffuse phonon scattering by a single disordered interface cannot make a phonon lose its memory and thus the applicability of diffusive mismatch model is limited. An analytical expression for diffuse scattering probability based on the continuum approximation is also derived and shown to work reasonably well at low frequencies.

Phase Transition of the Uniaxial Disordered Ferroelectric Sr$_{0.61}$Ba$_{0.39}$Nb$_2$O$_6$

We report a neutron scattering study of a ferroelectric phase transition in Sr$_{0.61}$Ba$_{0.39}$Nb$_2$O$_6$ (SBN-61). The ferroelectric polarization is along the crystallographic $c$-axis but the transverse acoustic branch propagating along the $<$1, 1, 0$>$ direction does not show any anomaly associated with the this transition. We find no evidence for a soft transverse optic phonon. We do, however, observe elastic diffuse scattering. Thermal conductance of one dimensional disordered harmonic chains

We study heat conduction mediated by longitudinal phonons in one dimensional disordered harmonic chains. Using scaling properties of the phonon density of states and localization in disordered systems, we find non-trivial scaling of the thermal conductance with the system size. Our findings are corroborated by extensive numerical analysis. We show that a system with strong disorder, characterized by a `heavy-tailed' probability distribution, and with large impedance mismatch between the bath and the system satisfies Fourier's law. Fabrication of mesoscale polymeric templates for three-dimensional disordered photonic materials

We report on the mesoscale fabrication and characterization of polymeric templates for isotropic photonic materials derived from hyper- uniform point patterns using direct laser writing in a polymer photoresist. Effect of annealing on Raman scattering spectra of monolayer graphene samples gradually disordered by ion irradiation

The Raman scattering spectra (RS) of two series of monolayer graphene samples irradiated with various doses of C$^{+}$ and Xe$^{+}$ ions were measured after annealing in high vacuum, and in forming gas (95\%Ar+5\%H$_{2}$). It was found that these methods of annealing have dramatically different influence on the RS lines. Effect of phonon dispersion on thermal conduction across Si/Ge interfaces

We report finite-volume simulations of the phonon Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) for heat conduction across the heterogeneous interfaces in SiGe superlattices. The diffuse mismatch model incorporating phonon dispersion and polarization is implemented over a wide range of Knudsen numbers. The results indicate that the thermal conductivity of a Si/Ge superlattice is much lower than that of the constitutive bulk materials for superlattice periods in the submicron regime. The development of four-dimensional (4D) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) using fast detectors has opened-up new avenues for addressing some of long-standing challenges in electron imaging. Thermal conductivity of III-V semiconductor superlattices

This paper presents a semiclassical model for the anisotropic thermal transport in III-V semiconductor superlattices (SLs). An effective interface rms roughness is the only adjustable parameter. Thermal boundary conductance across epitaxial ZnO/GaN interfaces: Assessment of phonon gas models and atomistic Green's function approaches for predicting interfacial phonon transport

We present experimental measurements of the thermal boundary conductance (TBC) from $77 - 500$ K across isolated heteroepitaxially grown ZnO films on GaN substrates. These data provide an assessment of the assumptions that drive the phonon gas model-based diffuse mismatch models (DMM) and atomistic Green's function (AGF) formalisms for predicting TBC.
