We study heat conduction mediated by longitudinal phonons in one dimensional disordered harmonic chains. Using scaling properties of the phonon density of states and localization in disordered systems, we find non-trivial scaling of the thermal conductance with the system size. Our findings are corroborated by extensive numerical analysis. We show that a system with strong disorder, characterized by a `heavy-tailed' probability distribution, and with large impedance mismatch between the bath and the system satisfies Fourier's law. We identify a dimensionless scaling parameter, related to the temperature scale and the localization length of the phonons, through which the thermal conductance for different models of disorder and different temperatures follows a universal behavior.
We show theoretically and experimentally that the conductance of small disordered samples exhibits random oscillations as a function of temperature. The amplitude of the oscillations decays as a power law of temperature, and their characteristic period is of the order of the temperature itself.
Introduction of optical gain to a disordered system results in enhanced fluctuations [$F_{(2)}=var(\tilde{g})/< \tilde{g} >^2$] of dimensionless conductance $\tilde{g}$, similar to the effect of Anderson localization in passive medium. Using numerical simulations we demonstrate that despite of such qualitative similarity, the whole distribution of conductance of amplifying random media is drastically different from that of passive system with the same value of $F_{(2)}$.
We study numerically the charge conductance distributions of disordered quantum spin-Hall (QSH) systems using a quantum network model. We have found that the conductance distribution at the metal-QSH insulator transition is clearly different from that at the metal-ordinary insulator transition. Thus the critical conductance distribution is sensitive not only to the boundary condition but also to the presence of edge states in the adjacent insulating phase. We have also calculated the point-contact conductance. Even when the two-terminal conductance is approximately quantized, we find large flu…
We study the conductance of disordered graphene superlattices with short-range structural correlations. The system consists of electron- and hole-doped graphenes of various thicknesses, which fluctuate randomly around their mean value. The effect of the randomness on the probability of transmission through the system of various sizes is studied. We show that in a disordered superlattice the quasiparticle that approaches the barrier interface almost perpendicularly transmits through the system. The conductivity of the finite-size system is computed and shown that the conductance vanishes when t…
The probability distribution of the mesoscopic local density of states (LDOS) for a single-channel disordered quantum wire with chiral symmetry is computed in two different geometries. An approximate ansatz is proposed to describe the crossover of the probability distributions for the conductance and LDOS between the chiral and standard symmetry classes of a single-channel disordered quantum wire. The accuracy of this ansatz is discussed by comparison with a large-deviation ansatz introduced by Schomerus and Titov in Phys. Rev. B \textbf{67}, 100201(R) (2003).
We show that off-diagonal nearest neighbor disorder in quasi-one-dimensional single particle tight-binding coupled chains leads to anomalies in the density of states and in the mean conductance, that can be interpreted as due to specific resonances of the band structure of the perfect system underlying the disordered one. We demonstrate that this phenomenology may appear not necessarily at the energy E=0 as reported so far in the literature and we show that also the even-odd chain number effect on the mean conductance is ruled by the same resonances. For different cases we provide a series exp…
Employing techniques recently developed in the context of the Fokker--Planck approach to electron transport in disordered systems we calculate the conductance length correlation function $< δg(L) δg(L+ΔL) >$ for quasi 1d wires. Our result is valid for arbitrary lengths L and $ΔL$. In the metallic limit the correlation function is given by a squared Lorentzian. In the localized regime it decays exponentially in both L and $ΔL$. The correlation length is proportional to L in the metallic regime and saturates at a value approximately given by the localization length $ξ$ as $L\ggξ$.
We numerically simulate the low-energy properties of interacting electrons in a random potential using the Hartree-Fock based exact diagonalization method. In particular, we investigate how the transport properties are influenced by the combined effects of disorder and correlations in the presence of the electron spin. To this end we calculate the participation number of many-particle states in Fock space, the return probability of single-particle excitations, and the Kubo-Greenwood conductance. It turns out that in the strongly localized regime interactions increase the conductance whereas fo…
A quantum wire is spatially displaced by suitable electric fields with respect to the scatterers inside a semiconductor crystal. As a function of the wire position, the low-temperature resistance shows reproducible fluctuations. Their characteristic temperature scale is a few hundred millikelvin, indicating a phase-coherent effect. Each fluctuation corresponds to a single scatterer entering or leaving the wire. This way, scattering centers can be counted one by one.
Sample-to-sample fluctuations of the time-dependent conductance of a system with static disorder have been studied by means of diagrammatic theory and microwave pulsed transmission measurements. The fluctuations of time-dependent conductance are not universal, i.e., depend on sample parameters, in contrast to the universal conductance fluctuations in the steady-state regime. The variance of normalized conductance, determined by the infinite-range intensity correlation C_3(t), is found to increase as a third power of delay time from an exciting pulse, t. C_3(t) grows larger than the long-range …
We study the intrinsic and extrinsic Hall effects in disordered magnetic Weyl semimetals numerically. We show that in Weyl metals, where the Fermi energy deviates from the Weyl point, the Hall and longitudinal conductances exhibit a specific relation, which is distinguished from the well-known relation in integer quantum Hall systems. Around the Weyl point, the Hall conductance increases with increasing longitudinal conductance. This increasing behavior indicates the existence of additional contributions to the Hall conductance from the subbands of Weyl cones besides that from the bulk Berry c…
We develop a systematic perturbative method to obtain analytic solution of the Generalized Dorokhov-Mello-Pereyra-Kumar (DMPK) equation in the strongly disordered regime which describes the evolution of the joint probability distribution of the transmission eigenvalues with system size. The solution allows us to obtain the distribution of conductance analytically in the insulating regime. Our results are consistent with existing numerical simulations of the three dimensional tight binding Anderson model, and suggests a possible description of the Anderson transition in the presence of a very b…
Dependence of hopping conductance on temperature and voltage for an ensemble of modestly long one-dimensional wires is studied numerically using the shortest-path algorithm. In a wide range of parameters this dependence can be approximated by a power-law rather than the usual stretched-exponential form. Relation to recent experiments and prior analytical theory is discussed.
In this paper, we study the full conductance statistics of disordered one dimensional wire under the application of light. We develop the transfer matrix method for periodically driven systems to analyze the conductance of large system with small frequency of light, where coherent photon absorptions play important role to determine not only the average but also the shape of conductance distributions. The average conductance under the application of light results from the competition between dynamic localization and effective dimension increase, and shows non-monotonic behavior as a function of…
The transfer matrix method is applied to finite quasi-1D disordered samples attached to perfect leads. The model is described by structured band matrices with random and regular entries. We investigate numerically the level spacing distribution for finite-length Lyapunov exponents as well as the conductance and its fluctuations for different channel numbers and sample sizes. A comparison is made with theoretical predictions and with numerical results recently obtained with the scattering matrix approach. The role of the coupling and finite size effects is also discussed.
We extend the analysis of the conductance fluctuations in disordered metals by Altshuler, Kravtsov, and Lerner (AKL) to disordered superconductors with broken time-reversal symmetry in $d=(2+ε)$ dimensions (symmetry classes C and D of Altland and Zirnbauer). Using a perturbative renormalization group analysis of the corresponding non-linear sigma model (NL$σ$M) we compute the anomalous scaling dimensions of the dominant scalar operators with $2s$ gradients to one-loop order. We show that, in analogy with the result of AKL for ordinary, metallic systems (Wigner-Dyson classes), an infinite numbe…
We are interested in the out of equilibrium phenomena observed in the electrical conductance of disordered insulators at low temperature, which may be signatures of the electron coulomb glass state. The present work is devoted to the occurrence of ageing, a benchmark phenomenon for the glassy state. It is the fact that the dynamical properties of a glass depend on its age, i.e. on the time elapsed since it was quench-cooled. We first critically analyse previous studies on disordered insulators and question their interpretation in terms of ageing. We then present new measurements on insulating …
We present results of conductance-noise experiments on disordered films of crystalline indium oxide with lateral dimensions 2microns to 1mm. The power-spectrum of the noise has the usual 1/f form, and its magnitude increases with inverse sample-volume down to sample size of 2microns, a behavior consistent with un-correlated fluctuators. A colored second spectrum is only occasionally encountered (in samples smaller than 40microns), and the lack of systematic dependence of non-Gaussianity on sample parameters persisted down to the smallest samples studied (2microns). Moreover, it turns out that …
We develop a simple systematic method, valid for all strengths of disorder, to obtain analytically the full distribution of conductances P(g) for a quasi one dimensional wire within the model of non-interacting fermions. The method has been used in [1-3] to predict sharp features in P(g) near g=1 and the existence of non-analyticity in the conductance distribution in the insulating and crossover regimes, as well as to show how P(g) changes from Gaussian to log-normal behavior as the disorder strength is increased. Here we provide many details of the method, including intermediate results that …
We develop a simple systematic method, valid for all strengths of disorder, to obtain analytically for the first time the full distribution of conductance P(g) for a quasi one dimensional wire in the absence of electron-electron interaction. We show that in the crossover region between the metallic and insulating regimes, P(g) is highly asymmetric, given by an essentially `one sided' log-normal distribution. For larger disorder, the tail of the log-normal distribution for g > 1 is cut off by a Gaussian.
We discuss the conditions under which an anomaly occurs in conductance and localization length of Anderson model on a lattice. Using the ladder hamiltonian and analytical calculation of average conductance we find the set of resonance conditions which complements the $π$-coupling rule for anomalies. We identify those anomalies that might vanish due to the symmetry of the lattice or the distribution of the disorder. In terms of the dispersion relation it is known from strictly one-dimensional model that the lowest order (i.e., the most strong) anomalies satisfy the equation $E(k)=E(3k)$. We sho…
In both research and textbook literature one often finds two ``different'' Kubo formulas for the zero-temperature conductance of a non-interacting Fermi system. They contain a trace of the product of velocity operators and single-particle (retarded and advanced) Green operators: $\text{Tr} (\hat{v}_x \hat{G}^r \hat{v}_x \hat{G}^a)$ or $\text{Tr} (\hat{v}_x \text{Im} \hat{G} \hat{v}_x \text{Im} \hat{G})$. The study investigates the relationship between these expressions, as well as the requirements of current conservation, through exact evaluation of such quantum-mechanical traces for a nanosca…
Superconducting wires with broken time-reversal and spin-rotational symmetries can exhibit two distinct topological gapped phases and host bound Majorana states at the phase boundaries. When the wire is tuned to the transition between these two phases and the gap is closed, Majorana states become delocalized leading to a peculiar critical state of the system. We study transport properties of this critical state as a function of the length $L$ of a disordered multichannel wire. Applying a non-linear supersymmetric sigma model of symmetry class D with two replicas, we identify the average conduc…
We present a scattering theory of transport through noncollinear disordered magnetic insulators. For concreteness, we study and compare the random field model (RFM) and the random anisotropy model (RAM). The RFM and RAM are used to model random spin disorder systems and amorphous materials, respectively. We utilize the Landauer-Buttiker formalism to compute the transmission probability and spin conductance of one-dimensional disordered spin chains. The RFM and the RAM both exhibit Anderson localization, which means that the transmission probability and spin conductance decay exponentially with…
We obtain the statistics of the intensity, transmission and conductance for scalar electromagnetic waves propagating through a disordered collection of scatterers. Our results show that the probability distribution for these quantities, x, follow a universal form x^a Exp(-x^m) . This family of functions includes the Rayleigh distribution (when a=0, m=1) and the Dirac delta function (a -> Infinity), which are the expressions for intensity and transmission in the diffusive regime neglecting correlations. Finally, we find simple analytical expressions for the nth moment of the distributions and f…
We study localization in two- and three channel quasi-1D systems using multichain tight-binding Anderson models with nearest-neighbour interchain hopping. In the three chain case we discuss both the case of free- and that of periodic boundary conditions between the chains. The finite disordered wires are connected to ideal leads and the localization length is defined from the Landauer conductance in terms of the transmission coefficients matrix. The transmission- and reflection amplitudes in properly defined quantum channels are obtained from S-matrices constructed from transfer matrices in Bl…
We address the controversy concerning the necessary conditions for the observation of Berry phases in disordered mesoscopic conductors. For this purpose we calculate the spin-dependent conductance of disordered two-dimensional structures in the presence of inhomogeneous magnetic fields. Our numerical results show that for both, the overall conductance and quantum corrections, the relevant parameter defining adiabatic spin transport scales with the square root of the number of scattering events, in generalization of Stern's original proposal [Phys. Rev. Lett. 68, 1022 (1992)]. This could hinder…
This paper extends an earlier analytical scattering matrix treatment of conductance and localization in coupled two- and three Anderson chain systems for weak disorder when evanescent states are present at the Fermi level. Such states exist typically when the interchain coupling exceeds the width of propagating energy bands associated with the various transverse eigenvalues of the coupled tight-binding systems. We calculate reflection- and transmission coefficients in cases where, besides propagating states, one or two evanescent states are available at the Fermi level for elastic scattering o…
We study heat conduction in quantum disordered harmonic chains connected to general heat reservoirs which are modeled as infinite collection of oscillators. Formal exact expressions for the thermal current are obtained and it is shown that, in some special cases, they reduce to Landauer-like forms. The asymptotic system size dependence of the current is analysed and is found to be similar to the classical case. It is a power law dependence and the power depends on the spectral properties of the reservoirs.
We study the non-linear conductance $\mathcal{G}\sim\partial^2I/\partial V^2|_{V=0}$ in coherent quasi-1D weakly disordered metallic wires. The analysis is based on the calculation of two fundamental correlators (correlations of conductance's functional derivatives and correlations of injectivities), which are obtained explicitly by using diagrammatic techniques. In a coherent wire of length $L$, we obtain $\mathcal{G}\sim0.006\,E_\mathrm{Th}^{-1}$ (and $\langle\mathcal{G}\rangle=0$), where $E_\mathrm{Th}=D/L^2$ is the Thouless energy and $D$ the diffusion constant; the small dimensionless fac…
We discuss intrinsic inhomogeneities of superconductive properties of uniformly disordered thin films with large dimensionless conductance g. It is shown that mesoscopic fluctuations, which usually contain a small factor 1/g, are crucially enhanced near the critical conductance g_c >> 1 where superconductivity is destroyed at T=0 due to Coulomb suppression of the Cooper attraction. This leads to strong spatial fluctuations of the local transition temperature and thus to percolative nature of the thermal superconductive transition.
The combined influence of disorder and interactions on the transport properties of electrons in one dimension is investigated. The numerical simulations are carried out by means of the Hartree-Fock-based diagonalization (HFD), a very efficient method to determine the low-energy properties of a disordered many-particle system. We find that the conductance of a strongly localized system can become considerably enhanced by the interactions. The enhancement for long-range interactions is significantly larger than for short-range interactions. In contrast, the conductance of weakly localized system…
A global phase diagram of disordered weak and strong topological insulators is established numerically. As expected, the location of the phase boundaries is renormalized by disorder, a feature recognized in the study of the so-called topological Anderson insulator. Here, we report unexpected quantization, i.e., robustness against disorder of the conductance peaks on these phase boundaries. Another highlight of the work is on the emergence of two subregions in the weak topological insulator phase under disorder. According to the size dependence of the conductance, the surface states are either …
We study the conductance $G$ of 2D Dirac semimetal nanowires at the presence of disorder. For an even nanowire length $L$ determined by the number of unit cells, we find non-integer values for $G$ that are independent of $L$ and persist with weak disorder, indicated by the vanishing fluctuations of $G$. The effect is created by a combination of the scattering effects at the contacts(interface) between the leads and the nanowire, an energy gap present in the nanowire for even $L$ and the topological properties of the 2D Dirac semimetals. Unlike conventional materials the reduced $G$ due to the …
We have developed an efficient order-N real-space Kubo approach for the calculation of the phonon conductivity which outperforms state-of-the-art alternative implementations based on the Green's function formalism. The method treats efficiently the time-dependent propagation of phonon wave packets in real space, and this dynamics is related to the calculation of the thermal conductance. Without loss of generality, we validate the accuracy of the method by comparing the calculated phonon mean free paths in disordered carbon nanotubes (isotope impurities) with other approaches, and further illus…

It is straightforward to calculate the conductance of a quantum device once all its scattering centers are fully specified. However, to do this in reverse, i.e., to find information about the composition of scatterers in a device from its conductance, is an elusive task. This is particularly more challenging in the presence of disorder. Here we propose a procedure in which valuable compositional information can be extracted from the seemingly noisy spectral conductance of a two-terminal disordered quantum device. In particular, we put forward an inversion methodology that can identify the natu…
In this paper, thermal transport in bond-disordered harmonic chains is revisited in detail using a nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. For strong bond disorder, thermal conductivity is independent of the system size. However, kinetic temperatures described by the local number of states coupling to external heat reservoirs are anomalous since they form a nonlinear profile in the interior of the system. Both results are accounted for in a unified manner in terms of the frequency-dependent localization length. From this argument, we derive a generic formula describing the asymptotic profil…
The single parameter scaling hypothesis is the foundation of our understanding of the Anderson transition. However, the conductance of a disordered system is a fluctuating quantity which does not obey a one parameter scaling law. It is essential to investigate the scaling of the full conductance distribution to establish the scaling hypothesis. We present a clear cut numerical demonstration that the conductance distribution indeed obeys one parameter scaling near the Anderson transition.
The spin conductance of two-dimensional topological insulators (2D TIs) is not expected to be quantized in the presence of perturbations that break the spin-rotational symmetry. However, the deviation from the pristine-limit quantization has yet to be studied in detail. In this paper, we define the spin current operator for the helical edge modes of a 2D TI and introduce a four-terminal setup to measure spin conductances. Using the developed formalism, we consider the effects of disorder terms that break spin-rotational symmetry or give rise to edge-to-edge coupling. We identify a key role pla…
We present a numerical study of the quasi-particle density of states (DoS) of two-dimensional d-wave superconductors in the presence of disorder, focusing on the influence of the range of the disorder. We find qualitatively different behavior for smooth and short-ranged disorder. In the former case, we find power law scaling of the DoS with an exponent depending on the strength of the disorder and the superconducting order parameter in quantitative agreement with the theory of Nersesyan {\em et al.}. For strong disorder, a qualitative change to an energy independent DoS occurs. In contrast, fo…
We perform a detailed numerical study of the conductance $G$ through one-dimensional (1D) tight-binding wires with on-site disorder. The random configurations of the on-site energies $ε$ of the tight-binding Hamiltonian are characterized by long-tailed distributions: For large $ε$, $P(ε)\sim 1/ε^{1+α}$ with $α\in(0,2)$. Our model serves as a generalization of 1D Lloyd's model, which corresponds to $α=1$. First, we verify that the ensemble average $\left\langle -\ln G\right\rangle$ is proportional to the length of the wire $L$ for all values of $α$, providing the localization length $ξ$ from $\…
The study explores perpendicular transport through macroscopically inhomogeneous three-dimensional disordered conductors using mesoscopic methods (real-space Green function technique in a two-probe measuring geometry). The nanoscale samples (containing $\sim1000$ atoms) are modeled by a tight-binding Hamiltonian on a simple cubic lattice where disorder is introduced in the on-site potential energy. I compute the transport properties of: disordered metallic junctions formed by concatenating two homogenous samples with different kinds of microscopic disorder, a single strongly disordered interfa…
A general formulation is developed to study heat conduction in disordered harmonic chains with arbitrary heat baths that satisfy the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. A simple formal expression for the heat current J is obtained, from which its asymptotic system-size (N) dependence is extracted. It is shown that the ``thermal conductivity'' depends not just on the system itself but also on the spectral properties of the fluctuation and noise used to model the heat baths. As special cases of our heat baths we recover earlier results which reported that for fixed boundaries $J \sim 1/N^{3/2}$, wh…
The curvatures of two-particle energy levels with respect to the enclosed magnetic flux in mesoscopic disordered rings are investigated numerically. We find that the typical value of the curvatures is increased by interactions in the localised regime and decreased in the metallic regime. This confirms a prediction by Akkermans and Pichard (Eur. Phys. J. B 1, 223 (1998)). The interaction-induced changes of the typical curvatures at different energies and disorder strengths exhibit one-parameter scaling with a conductance-like single parameter. This suggests that interactions could influence the…
Recent numerical simulations have shown that the distribution of conductance P(g) in 3D strongly localized regiem differs significally from the expected log normal distribution. To understand the origin of this difference analytically, we used a generalized DMPK equation for the joint probablity distribution of the transmission eigenvalues which includes a phenomenological (disorder and dimensionality dependent) matrix K containing certain correlations of the transfer matrices. We first of all examine the assumptions made in the derivation if the generalized DMPK and find that to a good approx…
The role of quadratic onsite pinning potentials on determining the size (N) dependence of the disorder averaged steady state heat current <J>, in a isotopically disordered harmonic chain connected to stochastic heat baths, is investigated. For two models of heat baths, namely white noise baths and Rubin's model of baths, we find that the N dependence of <J> is the same and depends on the number of pinning centers present in the chain. In the absence of pinning, <J> ~ 1/N^{1/2} while in presence of one or two pins <J> ~ 1/N^{3/2}. For a finite (n) number of pinning centers with 2 <= n << N, we …
We investigate the steady state heat current in two and three dimensional isotopically disordered harmonic lattices. Using localization theory as well as kinetic theory we estimate the system size dependence of the current. These estimates are compared with numerical results obtained using an exact formula for the current given in terms of a phonon transmission function, as well as by direct nonequilibrium simulations. We find that heat conduction by high-frequency modes is suppressed by localization while low-frequency modes are strongly affected by boundary conditions. Our {\color{black}heur…
Using the transfer matrix method, we study the conductance of the chiral particles through a monolayer graphene superlattice with long-range correlated disorder distributed on the potential of the barriers. Even though the transmission of the particles through graphene superlattice with white noise potentials is suppressed, the transmission is revived in a wide range of angles when the potential heights are long-range correlated with a power spectrum $S(k)\sim1/k^β$. As a result, the conductance increases with increasing the correlation exponent values gives rise a metallic phase. We obtain a …
The localization lengths of ultrathin disordered Au and Ag nanowires are estimated by calculating the wire conductances as functions of wire lengths. We study Ag and Au monoatomic linear chains, and thicker Ag wires with very small cross sections. For the monoatomic chains we consider two types of disorder: bounded random fluctuations of the interatomic distances, and the presence of random substitutional impurities. The effect of impurity atoms on the nanowire conductance is much stronger. Our results show that electrical transport in ultrathin disordered wires may occur in the strong localiz…
The Anderson delocalization-localization transition is studied in multilayered systems with randomly placed interlayer bonds of density $p$ and strength $t$. In the absence of diagonal disorder (W=0), following an appropriate perturbation expansion, we estimate the mean free paths in the main directions and verify by scaling of the conductance that the states remain extended for any finite $p$, despite the interlayer disorder. In the presence of additional diagonal disorder ($W > 0$) we obtain an Anderson transition with critical disorder $W_c$ and localization length exponent $ν$ independentl…
In the previous paper [Yamada, Chaos, Solitons $\&$ Fractals, {\bf 109},99(2018)], we investigated localization properties of one-dimensional disordered electronic system with long-range correlation generated by modified Bernoulli (MB) map. In the present paper, we report localization properties of phonon in disordered harmonic chains generated by the MB map. Here we show that Lyapunov exponent becomes positive definite for almost all frequencies $ω$ except $ω=0$, and the $B-$dependence changes to exponential decrease for $B > 2 $, where $B$ is a correlation parameter of the MB map. The distri…
We calculate the conductance of tubular-shaped nanowires having many potential scatterers at random positions. Our approach is based on the scattering matrix formalism and our results analyzed within the scaling theory of disordered conductors. When increasing the energy the conductance for a big enough number of impurities in the tube manifests a systematic evolution from the localized to the metallic regimes. Nevertheless, a conspicuous drop in conductance is predicted whenever a new transverse channel is open. Comparison with the semiclassical calculation leading to purely ohmic behavior is…
We experimentally investigate spectral statistics in Anderson localization in two-dimensional amorphous disordered media. Intensity distributions captured over an ultrabroad wavelength range of $\sim 600$~nm and averaged over numerous configurations provided the Ioffe-Regel parameter to be $\sim2.5$ over the investigated wavelength range. The spectra of the disordered structures provided access to several quasimodes, whose widths and separations allowed to directly estimate the optical Thouless conductance $g_{Th}$, consistently observed to be below unity. The probability distribution of $g_{T…
The localization length for isotopically disordered harmonic one-dimensional chains is calculated for arbitrary impurity concentration and scattering cross section. The localization length depends on the scattering cross section of a single scatterer, which is calculated for a discrete chain having a wavelength dependent pulse propagation speed. For binary isotopically disordered systems composed of many scatterers, the localization length decreases with increasing impurity concentration, reaching a mimimum before diverging toward infinity as the impurity concentration approaches a value of on…
We introduce a variant of the Banded Random Matrix ensemble and show, using detailed numerical analysis and theoretical arguments, that the phonon heat current in disordered quasi-one-dimensional lattices obeys a one-parameter scaling law. The resulting beta-function indicates that an anomalous Fourier law is applicable in the diffusive regime, while in the localization regime the heat current decays exponentially with the sample size. Our approach opens a new way to investigate the effects of Anderson localization in heat conduction, based on the powerful ideas of scaling theory.
The probability distribution of the conductance p(g) of disordered 2d and 3d systems is calculated by transfer matrix techniques. As expected, p(g) is Gaussian for extended states while for localized states it is log-normal. We find that at the mobility edge p(g) is highly asymmetric and universal.
We demonstrate in microwave measurements the broadband enhancement of transmission through an opaque barrier due to mirror symmetry. This enhancement relies on constructive interference between mirror scattering paths resulting from strong internal reflections at the left and right interfaces of a multichannel cavity. We observe a strong sensitivity of the conductance to a shift of the barrier from the center of the cavity. Remarkably, the impact of mirror symmetry can be further increased by tuning the degree of disorder within the cavity. We report an additional enhancement of the conductanc…
An extensive numerical study is reported on disorder effect in two-dimensional d-wave superconductors with random impurities in the unitary limit. It is found that a sharp resonant peak shows up in the density of states at zero energy and correspondingly the finite-size spin conductance is strongly enhanced which results in a non-universal feature in one-parameter scaling. However, all quasiparticle states remain localized, indicating that the resonant density peak alone is not sufficient to induce delocalization. In the weak disorder limit, the localization length is so long that the spin con…
