Fe$_2$P alloys have been identified as promising candidates for magnetic refrigeration at room-temperature and for custom magnetostatic applications. The intent of this study is to accurately characterize the magnetic ground state of the parent compound, Fe$_2$P, with two spectroscopic techniques, $μ$SR and NMR, in order to provide solid bases for further experimental analysis of Fe$_2$P-type transition metal based alloys. We perform zero applied field measurements using both techniques below the ferromagnetic transition $T_C=220~\mathrm K$. The experimental results are reproduced and interpreted using first principles simulations validating this approach for quantitative estimates in alloys of interest for technological applications.
[Fe(phen)2(NCS)2] is a prototype transition metal complex material, which undergoes a phase transition between low-spin (LS) and high-spin (HS) phases, induced by temperature, pressure or light. Vibrational modes play a key role for spin-state switching both in thermal and photo-induced cases, by contributing to vibrational entropy for thermal equilibrium transitions or driving the fast structural trapping of the photoinduced high spin state. Here we study the crystal phonon modes of [Fe(phen)2(NCS)2], by combining THz, IR, and Raman spectroscopies sensitive to modes in different frequency ran…

We present and discuss results of a density functional theory (DFT) study of a perfect UO2 crystals and He atoms in octahedral interstitial positions. We have calculated basic bulk crystal properties and He incorporation energies into the low temperature anti-ferromagnetic UO2 phase using several exchange-correlation functionals within the spin-polarized local density (LDA) and generalized gradient (GGA) approximations. In all these DFT calculations we included the on-site correlation corrections using the Hubbard model (DFT+U approach). We analysed a potential crystalline symmetry reduction a…
Ab-initio crystal structure prediction depends on accurate calculation of the energies of competing structures. Many DFT codes are available that utilize different approaches to solve the Kohn-Sham equation. We evaluate the consistency of three software packages (WIEN2k, VASP and MuST) that utilize three different methods (FL-APW, plane-wave pseudopotential and the KKR-Green's Function methods) by comparing the relative total energies obtained for a set of BCC and FCC binary metallic alloys. We focus on the impact of choices such as muffin-tin $vs.$ full-potential, angular momentum cutoff and …
A shell model for ferroelectric perovskites fitted to results of first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations is strongly affected by approximations made in the exchange-correlation functional within DFT, and in general not as accurate as a shell model derived from experimental data. We have developed an isotropic shell model for BaTiO3 based on the PBEsol exchange-correlation functional, which was specifically designed for crystal properties of solids. Our shell model for BaTiO3 agrees with groundstate DFT properties and the experimental lattice constants at finite temperatur…
We investigate the long-standing problem of the hole localization at the Al impurity in quartz SiO$_2$, using a relatively recent DFT hybrid-functional method in which the exchange fraction is obtained \emph{ab initio}, based on an analogy with the static many-body COHSEX approximation to the electron self-energy. As the amount of the admixed exact exchange in hybrid functionals has been shown to be determinant for properly capturing the hole localization, this problem constitutes a prototypical benchmark for the accuracy of the method, allowing one to assess to what extent self-interaction ef…
A binary embedded-atom method (EAM) potential is optimized for Cu on Ag(111) by fitting to ab initio data. The fitting database consists of DFT calculations of Cu monomers and dimers on Ag(111), specifically their relative energies, adatom heights, and dimer separations. We start from the Mishin Cu-Ag EAM potential and first modify the Cu-Ag pair potential to match the FCC/HCP site energy difference then include Cu-Cu pair potential optimization for the entire database. The optimized EAM potential reproduce DFT monomer and dimer relative energies and geometries correctly. In trimer calculation…
Phase diagram of Np-U-Zr, a key ternary alloy system of relevance for metallic nuclear fuels, is still largely undetermined. Here a thermodynamic model for the Np-U-Zr system is developed based on Muggianu extrapolation of our models for the U-Zr, Np-Zr, and Np-U binary systems, all employing the CALculation of PHAse Diagrams (CALPHAD) method. This model reproduces available experimental data for the high temperature phases reasonably well, but is uncertain for the lower temperature phases for which experimental data are scarce. Ab initio calculations are performed on the BCC phase of the Np-U…
The DFT calculations were performed of densities of states of semiconductor GaAs and magnetic semiconductor Ga0.9375Mn0.0625As. It is obtained that a part of Mn3d- states is hybridized with valence band at Fermi level. The exchange integrals of Anderson impurity model were calculated making use of atomic Hartree-Fock package and angular momentum coupling technique. Theoretical Tc of Ga0.9375Mn0.0625As obtained in the multiscale ab initio method is in reasonable agreement with experiment. The application of Hubbard parameters in DFT calculations using ultrasoft pseudopotentials is discussed.
In material sciences, spectroscopic approaches combining ab initio calculations with experiments are commonly used to accurately analyze the experimental spectral data. Most state-of-the-art first-principle calculations are usually performed assuming an equilibrium static lattice. Yet, nuclear motion affects spectra even when reduced to the zero-point motion at 0 K. We propose a framework based on Density-Functional Theory that includes quantum thermal fluctuations in theoretical X- ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES) and solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopies and a…
A degenerate perturbation $k\cdot p$ approach for effective mass calculations is implemented in the all-electron density functional theory (DFT) package WIEN2k. The accuracy is tested on major group IVA, IIIA-VA, and IIB-VIA semiconductor materials. Then, the effective mass in graphene and CuI with defects is presented as illustrative applications. For states with significant Cu-d character additional local orbitals with higher principal quantum numbers (more radial nodes) have to be added to the basis set in order to converge the results of the perturbation theory. Caveats related to a differ…
It is essential to know the arrangement of the atoms in a material in order to compute and understand its properties. Searching for stable structures of materials using first-principles electronic structure methods, such as density functional theory (DFT), is a rapidly growing field. Here we describe our simple, elegant and powerful approach to searching for structures with DFT which we call ab initio random structure searching (AIRSS). Applications to discovering structures of solids, point defects, surfaces, and clusters are reviewed. New results for iron clusters on graphene, silicon cluste…
Density functional theory (DFT) and thermal DFT (thDFT) calculations were used to evaluate the energy band structure, bandgap, and the total energy of various graphene quantum dots (GQDs). The DFT calculations were performed using local density approximation for the exchange-correlation functional and norm-conserving pseudopotentials. We consider the triangular and hexagonal GQDs with zigzag and armchair edges and 1-3 nm dimensions with many hundred atoms. The simulation results show that all of these GQDs are direct bandgap semiconductors with a flat band structure, and they are suitable for …
We investigate the pressure-induced metal-insulator transition from diamond to beta-tin in bulk Silicon, using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) and density functional theory (DFT) approaches. We show that it is possible to efficiently describe many-body effects, using a variational wave function with an optimized Jastrow factor and a Slater determinant. Variational results are obtained with a small computational cost and are further improved by performing diffusion Monte Carlo calculations and an explicit optimization of molecular orbitals in the determinant. Finite temperature corrections and zero p…
We present the TRIQS/DFTTools package, an application based on the TRIQS library that connects this toolbox to realistic materials calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). In particular, TRIQS/DFTTools together with TRIQS allows an efficient implementation of DFT plus dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations. It supplies tools and methods to construct Wannier functions and to perform the DMFT self-consistency cycle in this basis set. Post-processing tools, such as band-structure plotting or the calculation of transport properties are also implemented. The package comes wit…

Based on the van der Waals density functional theory (vdW-DFT)+U scheme, we carry out the ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) study of the interaction dynamics for H$_{2}$ impingement against the stoichiometric PuO$_{2}$(111), the reduced PuO$_{2}$(111), and the stoichiometric $α$-Pu$_{2}$O$_{3}$(111) surfaces. The hydrogen molecular physisorption states, which can not be captured by pure DFT+\textit{U} method, are obtained by employing the vdW-DFT+\textit{U} scheme. We show that except for the weak physisorption, PuO$_{2}$(111) surfaces are so difficult of access that almost all of the H$_{2}…
Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations show a weak interaction between hydrogen and helium in iron, in contrast to previous reports of a strong trapping of hydrogen at helium. The strong preference of He and H to occupy regions with low electronic density (such as vacancies) explains this discrepancy, with vacancy-He and vacancy-H binding forces concealing the repulsive interaction between He and H. Furthermore, Rate Theory simulations based on our DFT-calculated V$_n$He$_m$H$_p$ cluster energetics predict, as it is observed in some experiments, that synergetic effects could be expected …
By means of ab initio calculations within the density functional theory (DFT) electronic and magnetic properties of BaTiO3/LaMnO3 interface were investigated. An impact of ferroelectric overlayer thickness onto the interface properties was analysed through the spin-polarized density of states.
The dynamical and thermodynamic phase stabilities of the stoichiometric compound CrN including different structural and magnetic configurations are comprehensively investigated using a first-principles density-functional-theory (DFT) plus U approach in conjunction with experimental measurements of the thermal expansion. Comparing DFT and DFT+U results with experimental data reveals that the treatment of electron correlations using methods beyond standard DFT is crucial. The non-magnetic face-centered cubic B1-CrN phase is both, elastically and dynamically unstable, even under high pressure, wh…
We discuss the binding energy E_b of impurities in semiconductors within density functional theory (DFT) and the GW approximation, focusing on donors in nanowires as an example. We show that DFT succeeds in the calculation of E_b from the Kohn-Sham (KS) hamiltonian of the ionized impurity, but fails in the calculation of E_b from the KS hamiltonian of the neutral impurity, as it misses most of the interaction of the bound electron with the surface polarization charges of the donor. We trace this deficiency back to the lack of screened exchange in the present functionals.
While the success of density functional theory (DFT) has led to its use in a wide variety of fields such as physics, chemistry, materials science and biochemistry, it has long been recognised that conventional methods are very inefficient for large complex systems, because the memory requirements scale as $N^2$ and the cpu requirements as $N^3$ (where $N$ is the number of atoms). The principles necessary to develop methods with linear scaling of the cpu and memory requirements with system size ($\mathcal{O}(N)$ methods) have been established for more than ten years, but only recently have prac…
Structural, elastic and electronic band structure properties of A-15 type Nb-based intermetallic compounds Nb3B (B = Os, Pt, Au) have been revisited using first principles calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT). All these show excellent agreement with previous reports. More importantly, electronic bonding, charge density distribution and Fermi surface features have been studied in detail for the first time. Vickers hardness of these compounds is also studied. The Fermi surfaces of Nb3B contain both hole- and electron-like sheets, the features of which change systematically a…
We present a Density Functional Theory (DFT) based study of the structural and magnetic properties of the (001) surface of the semiconducting oxide ZnFe2O4 (spinel structure). The calculations were performed using the DFT based ab initio plane wave and pseudopotential method as implemented in the Quantum Espresso code. The all electron Full-potential linearized-augmented-plane-wave method (FP-LAPW) was also employed to check the accuracy of plane wave method. In both calculations the DFT+U methodology was employed and different (001) surface terminations of ZnFe2O4 were studied: We find that t…
A roadblock in utilizing InGaAs for scaled-down electronic devices is its anomalous dopant diffusion behavior; specifically, existing models are not able to explain available experimental data on beryllium diffusion consistently. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive model, taking self-interstitial migration and Be interaction with Ga and In into account. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are first used to calculate the energy parameters and charge states of possible diffusion mechanisms. Based on the DFT results, continuum modeling and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations are then p…
Density functional theory (DFT) primarily provides a good description of the electronic structure. Thus, DFT primarily deals with length scales as those of a chemical bond, i.e. 10^-10 meter, and with time scales of the order of atomic vibrations, i.e. 10^-13 seconds. However, several interesting phenomena happen and/or become observable on different scales, namely meso- or macroscopic lengths and on time scales of seconds or even minutes. To bridge the gap between 10^-13 seconds and a second or between 10^-10 meter and 10 and more nano meters is one of the important challenges we are facing t…
Structural stability and vibrational properties of KN$_3$ have been studied under pressure using the first principles calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) as well as with semi empirical dispersion correction to the DFT to treat van der Waals interactions. The structural properties calculated through the dispersion correction are in good agreement with the experimental results when compared with the standard density functional theory. The lattice mode and the azide ion bending mode frequencies are found to be well reproduced by our calculations. As pressure increases, the E…
We present a generalized definition of subspace occupancy matrices in ab initio methods for strongly correlated materials, such as DFT+U and DFT+DMFT, which is appropriate to the case of nonorthogonal projector functions. By enforcing the tensorial consistency of all matrix operations, we are led to a subspace projection operator for which the occupancy matrix is tensorial and accumulates only contributions which are local to the correlated subspace at hand. For DFT+U in particular, the resulting contributions to the potential and ionic forces are automatically Hermitian, without resort to sym…
Over the last few years, $ab~initio$ methods have become an increasingly popular tool to evaluate intrinsic carrier transport properties in 2D materials. The lack of experimental information, and the progress made in the development of DFT tools to evaluate electronic band structures, phonon dispersions, and electron-phonon scattering matrix-elements, have made them a favored choice. However, a large discrepancy is observed in the literature among the $ab~initio$ calculated carrier mobility in 2D materials. Some of the discrepancies are a result of the physical approximations made in calculati…
By carrying out density functional theory (DFT) analysis within the Keldysh non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) framework, we investigate the quantum transport properties of Au-C60-Au molecular junctions from the first principles. We briefly review the NEGF-DFT formalism and present some of our data. We found that at small electrode separations (9-13 Angstrom), the Au-C60-Au junctions show metallic behaviour with conductance G ~ 2e^{2}/h and current I ~ 1-3 microAmpere in the linear regime (bias voltage V < 0.3 Volt). The physical mechanism is the resonance tunnelling through partially occ…
We present a comprehensive ab initio investigation on Mg$_3$Bi$_2$, a promising Mg-ion battery anode material with high rate capacity. Through combined DFT (PBE, HSE06) and $G_0W_0$ electronic structure calculations, we find that Mg$_3$Bi$_2$ is likely to be a small band gap semiconductor. DFT-based defect formation energies indicate that Mg vacancies are likely to form in this material, with relativistic spin-orbit coupling significantly lowering the defect formation energies. We show that a transition state searching methodology based on the hybrid eigenvector-following approach can be used …
Zirconolite, CaZrTi2O7, is a proposed ceramic for the use in disposal of highly active nuclear waste. Density functional theory (DFT) has been used, in conjunction with a random search technique, to identify the stable interstitial sites for the intrinsic defects in zirconolite. There is a significant dependence on charge states for the vacancy defect structures, with the formation of an O2 molecule in certain charge states of Ti and Zr vacancies. The low coordination of the oxygen ions provided sites on which DFT localised holes associated with the cation vacancies. The Frenkel defect energie…
Epitaxial thin films of the half-metallic Xa-compound Mn2CoGa (Hg2CuTi prototype) were prepared by dc magnetron co-sputtering with different heat treatments on MgO (001) substrates. High-quality films with a bulk magnetization of 1.95(5)μ_B per unit cell were obtained. The L3,2 x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra agree with calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) and reveal the antiparallel alignment of the two inequivalent Mn moments. X-ray magnetic linear dichroism, in good agreement with theory as well, allows to distinguish between itinerant and local Mn moments. Based …
The nonlinear optical properties and electro-optic effects of some oxygen-octahedric ferroelectrics are studied by the density functional theory (DFT) in the local density approximation (LDA) expressions based on first principle calculations without the scissor approximation. We present calculations of the frequency- dependent complex dielectric function and the second harmonic generation response coefficient \c{hi}(2)(-2ω,ω,ω) over a large frequency range in tetragonal and rhombohedral phases. We report calculated, electronic and related properties of wurtzite and zinc blende gallium nitrides (w-GaN, zb-GaN). We employed a local density approximation (LDA) potential and the linear combination of atomic orbital (LCAO) formalism. The implementation of this formalism followed the Bagayoko, Zhao, and Williams (BZW) method, as enhanced by Ekuma and Franklin (BZW-EF). The calculated electronic and related properties, for both structures of GaN, are in good agreement with corresponding, experimental data, unlike results from most previous ab initio calculations utilizing a density function…
In this paper we investigate the effect of Cd doping at ultra-low concentrations in SnO$_2$ both experimentally, by measuring the temperature dependence of the electric quadrupole hyperfine interactions with time-differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) spectroscopy using $^{111}$Cd as probe nuclei, and theoretically, by performing first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory. TDPAC spectra were successfully analyzed with a time-dependent on-off model for the perturbation factor. These results show combined dynamic plus static interactions whose electric-field…
We present M-SPARC: MATLAB-Simulation Package for Ab-initio Real-space Calculations. It can perform pseudopotential spin-polarized and unpolarized Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations for isolated systems such as molecules as well as extended systems such as crystals, surfaces, and nanowires. M-SPARC provides a rapid prototyping platform for the development and testing of new algorithms and methods in real-space DFT, with the potential to significantly accelerate the rate of advancements in the field. It also provides a convenient avenue for the accurate first principles study…
It is generally accepted that the effective magnetic field acting on a magnetic moment is given by the gradient of the energy with respect to the magnetization. However, in ab initio spin dynamics within the adiabatic approximation, the effective field is also known to be exactly the negative of the constraining field, which acts as a Lagrange multiplier to stabilize an out-of-equilibrium, non-collinear magnetic configuration. We show that for Hamiltonians without mean-field parameters both of these fields are exactly equivalent, while there can be a finite difference for mean-field Hamiltonia…

We have developed a method that can analyze large random grain boundary (GB) models with the accuracy of density functional theory (DFT) calculations using active learning. It is assumed that the atomic energy is represented by the linear regression of the atomic structural descriptor. The atomic energy is obtained through DFT calculations using a small cell extracted from a huge GB model, called replica DFT atomic energy. The uncertainty reduction (UR) approach in active learning is used to efficiently collect the training data for the atomic energy. In this approach, atomic energy is not req…
Ab initio modelling of point defects in the cubic phase of magnetite faces two problems: the cubic structure becomes unstable below the Verwey temperature and there is no consensus on the electronic structure of the cubic phase (if there is a band gap, what type of symmetry of the wavefunction should be considered and how to describe strong electronic correlations). In this paper, we show that the comparison of the experimental data on the band gap and the Frenkel pair formation energy with the first-principles calculations allows to determine a consistent DFT+U model of cubic Fe$_3$O$_4$.
We have employed the improved Peierls-Nabarro (P-N) equation to study the properties of 1/2<110> edge dislocation in {111} plane in FCC metals Al, Cu, Ir, Pd, and Pt. The generalized-stacking-fault energy (GSFE) surface entering the equation is calculated by using first-principles density functional theory (DFT). The accuracy of the method has been tested by calculating values for various stacking fault energies which favorably compare with the previous theoretical and experimental results. The core structures, including the core widths both of the edge and screw components, dissociation behav…
Transient X-ray spectroscopies have become ubiquitous in studying photoexcited dynamics in solar energy materials due to their sensitivity to carrier occupations and local chemical or structural dynamics. The interpretation of solid-state photoexcited dynamics, however, is complicated by the core-hole perturbation and the resulting many-body dynamics. Here, an ab initio, Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) approach is developed that can incorporate photoexcited state effects for solid-state materials. The extreme ultraviolet (XUV) absorption spectra for the ground, photoexcited, and thermally expand…
The marriage of density functional theory (DFT) and deep learning methods has the potential to revolutionize modern computational materials science. Here we develop a deep neural network approach to represent DFT Hamiltonian (DeepH) of crystalline materials, aiming to bypass the computationally demanding self-consistent field iterations of DFT and substantially improve the efficiency of ab initio electronic-structure calculations. A general framework is proposed to deal with the large dimensionality and gauge (or rotation) covariance of DFT Hamiltonian matrix by virtue of locality and is reali…
Using first principles calculations, we have studied the structural and elastic properties of SrTMO3 (TM = Rh, Ti, Mo, Zr) under pressure by the plane wave pseudopotential method based on the density functional theory (DFT) within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The optical properties have been investigated under zero pressure. It is observed that the calculated lattice parameters are in good agreement with the available experimental result and previous theoretical results.
Structural, elastic, electronic, bonding, thermo-mechanical and optical properties of predicted NbAlB MAB phase in comparison to MoAlB: DFT based ab-initio insights
Group I/II materials exhibit unexpected structural phase transitions at high pressures, providing potential insight into the origins of elemental superconductivity. We present here a computational study of elemental barium and binary sodium-calcium alloys to identify both known and unknown phases of barium under pressure, as well as stable high-pressure compounds in the immiscible Na-Ca system. To predict stability, we performed density functional theory calculations on randomly generated structures and evolved them using a genetic algorithm. For barium, we observed all of the expected phases …
By including a fraction of exact exchange (EXX), hybrid functionals reduce the self-interaction error in semi-local density functional theory (DFT), and thereby furnish a more accurate and reliable description of the electronic structure in systems throughout biology, chemistry, physics, and materials science. However, the high computational cost associated with the evaluation of all required EXX quantities has limited the applicability of hybrid DFT in the treatment of large molecules and complex condensed-phase materials. To overcome this limitation, we have devised a linear-scaling yet form…
The non-resonant tunneling regime for charge transfer across nanojunctions is critically dependent on the so-called β parameter, governing the exponential decay of the current as the length of the junction increases. For periodic materials, this parameter can be theoretically evaluated by computing the complex band structure (CBS) -- or evanescent states -- of the material forming the tunneling junction. In this work we present the calculation of the CBS for organic polymers using a variety of computational schemes, including standard local, semilocal, and hybrid-exchange density functionals, …
We present an ab initio approach to electronic transport in nanoscale systems which includes electronic correlations through the GW approximation. With respect to Landauer approaches based on density-functional theory (DFT), we introduce a physical quasiparticle electronic-structure into a non-equilibrium Green's function theory framework. We use an equilibrium non-selfconsistent $G^0W^0$ self-energy considering both full non-hermiticity and dynamical effects. The method is applied to a real system, a gold mono-atomic chain. With respect to DFT results, the conductance profile is modified and …
A general set of methods is presented for calculating chemical potentials in solid and liquid mixtures using {\em ab initio} techniques based on density functional theory (DFT). The methods are designed to give an {\em ab initio} approach to treating chemical equilibrium between coexisting solid and liquid solutions, and particularly the partitioning ratio of solutes between such solutions. For the liquid phase, the methods are based on the general technique of thermodynamic integration, applied to calculate the change of free energy associated with the continuous interconversion of solvent an…
This paper shows that the oxygen vacancies observed experimentally in thin films of LaCoO3 subject to tensile strain are thermodynamically stable according to ab initio calculations. By using DFT calculations, we show that oxygen vacancies on the order of 6 % forming chains perpendicular to the (001) direction are more stable than the stoichiometric solution. These lead to magnetic Co2+ ions surrounding the vacancies that couple ferromagnetically. The remaining Co3+ cations in an octahedral environment are non magnetic. The gap leading to a ferromagnetic insulating phase occurs naturally and w…
We present ab-initio density functional (DFT) calculations of the vibrational spectra of neutral Magnesium phthalocyanine (MgPc) molecule and of its Raman scattering intensities.
We report ab initio calculations of the melting curve and Hugoniot of molybdenum for the pressure range 0-400 GPa, using density functional theory (DFT) in the projector augmented wave (PAW) implementation. We use the ``reference coexistence'' technique to overcome uncertainties inherent in earlier DFT calculations of the melting curve of Mo. Our calculated melting curve agrees well with experiment at ambient pressure and is consistent with shock data at high pressure, but does not agree with the high pressure melting curve from static compression experiments. Our calculated P(V) and T(P) Hugo…
