We present a generalized definition of subspace occupancy matrices in ab initio methods for strongly correlated materials, such as DFT+U and DFT+DMFT, which is appropriate to the case of nonorthogonal projector functions. By enforcing the tensorial consistency of all matrix operations, we are led to a subspace projection operator for which the occupancy matrix is tensorial and accumulates only contributions which are local to the correlated subspace at hand. For DFT+U in particular, the resulting contributions to the potential and ionic forces are automatically Hermitian, without resort to symmetrization, and localized to their corresponding correlated subspace. The tensorial invariance of the occupancies, energies and ionic forces is preserved. We illustrate the effect of this formalism in a DFT+U study using self-consistently determined projectors.
On the basis of a new ab initio, all-electron response scheme, formulated within time-dependent density-functional theory, we solve the puzzle posed by the anomalous dispersion of the plasmon linewidth in K. The key damping mechanism is shown to be decay into particle-hole pairs involving empty states of d-symmetry. While the effect of many-particle correlations is small, the correlations built into the "final-state" -d-bands play an important, and novel, role ---which is related to the phase-space complexity associated with these flat bands. Our case study of plasmon lifetime in K illustrates…
We describe an ab initio theory of finite temperature magnetism in strongly-correlated electron systems. The formalism is based on spin density functional theory, with a self-interaction corrected local spin density approximation (SIC-LSDA). The self-interaction correction is implemented locally, within the KKR multiple-scattering method. Thermally induced magnetic fluctuations are treated using a mean-field `disordered local moment' (DLM) approach and at no stage is there a fitting to an effective Heisenberg model. We apply the theory to the 3d transition metal oxides, where our calculations …
The accurate ab-initio simulation of periodic solids with strong correlations is one of the grand challenges of condensed matter. While mature methods exist for weakly correlated solids, the ab-initio description of strongly correlated systems is an active field of research. In this work, we show results for the single particle spectral function of the two correlated $d$-electron solids NiO and MnO from self-energy embedding theory. Unlike earlier work, the theory does not use any adjustable parameters and is fully ab-initio, while being able to treat both the strong correlation and the non-lo…
We present results of ab initio theoretical investigations of the excitation spectra of correlated electrons in metals (Al, K, and Li) and their interplay with inelastic scattering experiments. We resolve various anomalies contained in the data, which were originally viewed as signatures of strong dynamical electronic correlations; we show that, instead, the anomalies are due to band-structure effects. The underlying theoretical framework in our density-response calculations is time-dependent density-functional theory; with this scheme we discuss the lifetime of the K plasmon, and the dynamica…
The electronic states of selected nanosystems are discussed within the Exact Diagonalization Ab Initio (EDABI) method. In particular, incipient Mott--Hubbard localization effects and associated with it properties analyzed in detail.
The recently discovered two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals magnet NiPS$_3$ provides a new route to examine many-body quasiparticles under 2D confinement. Excitons are of particular interest due to their strong coupling to the magnetic ground state in this material. Here, by using a first-principles based approach, we find bright excitons between 1.4 eV to 1.7 eV, similar to the sharp coherent and band edge excitons experimentally observed. Our analysis shows that each exciton in NiPS$_3$ is composed of a combination of $d$-$d$ and charge-transfer character, where the relative ratio of each pai…
We present the TRIQS/DFTTools package, an application based on the TRIQS library that connects this toolbox to realistic materials calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). In particular, TRIQS/DFTTools together with TRIQS allows an efficient implementation of DFT plus dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations. It supplies tools and methods to construct Wannier functions and to perform the DMFT self-consistency cycle in this basis set. Post-processing tools, such as band-structure plotting or the calculation of transport properties are also implemented. The package comes wit…
We derive an effective low-energy Hamiltonian for potassium loaded zeolite A, a unique ferromagnet from non-magnetic elements. We perform ab initio density functional calculations and construct maximally localized Wannier functions for low-energy states made from potassium s electrons. The resulting Wannier orbitals, spreading widely in the alminosilicate cage, are found to be the superatomic s and p orbitals in the confining potential formed by the host cage. We then make a tight-binding model for these superatomic orbitals and introduce interaction parameters such as the Hubbard U. After mea…
We propose a self-consistent method for electronic structure calculations of correlated systems, which combines the local spin-density approximation (LSDA) and the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The LSDA part is based on the exact muffin-tin orbital approach, meanwhile the DMFT uses a perturbation scheme that includes the T matrix with fluctuation exchange approximation. The current LSDA+DMFT implementation fulfills both self-energy and charge self-consistency requirements. We present results on the electronic structure calculations for bulk 3d transition metals (Cr, Fe, and Ni) and for F…
In view of the continuous theoretical efforts aimed at an accurate microscopic description of the strongly correlated transition metal oxides and related materials, we show that with continuum quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations it is possible to obtain the value of the spin superexchange coupling constant of a copper oxide in a quantitatively excellent agreement with experiment. The variational nature of the QMC total energy allows us to identify the best trial wave function out of the available pool of wave functions, which makes the approach essentially free from adjustable parameters an…
The influence of dynamical correlation effects on the magneto-optical properties of ferromagnetic Fe and Ni has been investigated. In addition the temperature dependence of the self-energy and its influence on the DOS and optical conductivity is considered. Magneto-optical properties were calculated on the basis of the one-particle Green's function, which was obtained from the DMFT-SPTF procedure. It is shown that dynamical correlations play a rather important role in weakly correlated Fe and substantially change the spectra for moderately correlated Ni. Magneto-optical properties obtained for…
To determine the strength of essential electronic and magnetic interactions in the iridates Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and Ba$_2$IrO$_4$ - potential platforms for high-temperature superconductivity - we use many-body techniques from wavefunction-based electronic-structure theory. Multiplet physics, spin-orbit interactions, and Ir-O hybridization are all treated on equal footing, fully {\it ab initio}. Our calculations put the lowest d-d excitations of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$/Ba$_2$IrO$_4$ at 0.69/0.64 eV, substantially lower than in isostructural cuprates. Charge-transfer excitations start at 3.0/1.9 eV and the magn…
With wavefunction-based electronic-structure calculations we determine the Cu d-d excitation energies in quasi-one-dimensional spin-chain and ladder copper oxides. A complete set of local excitations has been calculated for cuprates with corner-sharing (Sr2CuO3 and SrCuO2) and edge-sharing (LiVCuO4, CuGeO3, LiCu2O2 and Li2CuO2) CuO4 plaquettes, with corner-sharing CuF6 octahedra (KCuF3), for the ladder system CaCu2O3, and for multiferroic cupric oxide CuO. Our data compare well with available results of optical absorption measurements on KCuF3 and the excitation energies found by resonant inel…
Engineering effective electronic parameters is a major focus in condensed matter physics. Their dynamical modulation opens the possibility of creating and controlling physical properties in systems driven out of equilibrium. In this work, we demonstrate that the Hubbard $U$, the on-site Coulomb repulsion in strongly correlated materials, can be modified on femtosecond time scales by a strong nonresonant laser excitation in the prototypical charge transfer insulator NiO. Using our recently developed time-dependent density functional theory plus self-consistent $U$ (TDDFT+U) method, we demonstra…
An efficient computational scheme devised for investigations of ground state properties of the electronically correlated systems is presented. As an example, $(H_{2})_{n}$ chain is considered with the long-range electron-electron interactions taken into account. The implemented procedure covers: (i) single-particle Wannier wave-function basis construction in the correlated state, (ii) microscopic parameters calculation, and (iii) ground state energy optimization. The optimization loop is based on highly effective process-pool solution - specific root-workers approach. The hierarchical, two-lev…

ComDMFT is a massively parallel computational package to study the electronic structure of correlated-electron systems (CES). Our approach is a parameter-free method based on ab initio linearized quasiparticle self-consistent GW (LQSGW) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The non-local part of the electronic self-energy is treated within ab initio LQSGW and the local strong correlation is treated within DMFT. In addition to ab initio LQSGW+DMFT, charge self-consistent LDA+DMFT methodology is also implemented, enabling multiple methods in one open-source platform for the electronic structur…
We overview the EDABI method developed recently and combining the exact diagonalization and ab initio aspects of electron states in correlated systems and apply it to nanoscopic systems. In particular, we discuss the localization-delocalization transition for the electrons that corresponds to the Mott-Hubbard transition in bulk systems. We show, that, the statistical distribution function for electrons in a nanochain evolves from the Fermi-Dirac-like to the Luttinger-liquid-like with the increasing interatomic distance. The concept of Hubbard subbands is introduced to nanoclusters, and corresp…
The hydrogen molecules $H_2$ and $(H_2)_2$ are analyzed with electronic correlations taken into account between the $1s$ electrons exactly. The optimal single-particle Slater orbitals are evaluated in the correlated state of $H_2$ by combining their variational determination with the diagonalization of the full Hamiltonian in the second-quantization language. All electron--ion coupling constants are determined explicitly and their relative importance is discussed. Sizable zero-point motion amplitude and the corresponding energy are then evaluated by taking into account the anharmonic contribut…
We present a first-principles method for deriving effective low-energy models of electrons in solids having entangled band structure. The procedure starts with dividing the Hilbert space into two subspaces, the low-energy part ("$d$ space'') and the rest of the space ("$r$ space''). The low-energy model is constructed for the $d$ space by eliminating the degrees of freedom of the $r$ space. The thus derived model contains the strength of electron correlation expressed by a partially screened Coulomb interaction, calculated in the constrained random-phase-approximation (cRPA) where screening ch…
Quantitative prediction of electronic properties in correlated materials requires simulations without empirical truncations and parameters. We present a method to achieve this goal through a new ab initio formulation of dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Instead of using small impurities defined in a low-energy subspace, which require complicated downfolded interactions which are often approximated, we describe a full cell $GW$+DMFT approach, where the impurities comprise all atoms in a unit cell or supercell of the crystal. Our formulation results in large impurity problems, which we treat h…
The accurate description of electrons at extreme density and temperature is of paramount importance for, e.g., the understanding of astrophysical objects and inertial confinement fusion. In this context, the dynamic structure factor $S(\mathbf{q},ω)$ constitutes a key quantity as it is directly measured in X-ray Thomson (XRTS) scattering experiments and governs transport properties like the dynamic conductivity. In this work, we present the first \textit{ab initio} results for $S(\mathbf{q},ω)$ by carrying out extensive path integral Monte Carlo simulations and developing a new method for the …
Modern extensions of density functional theory such as the density functional theory plus U and the density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory require choices, including selection of variable (charge vs spin density) for the density functional and specification of the correlated subspace. This paper examines these issues in the context of the "plus U" extensions of density functional theory, in which additional correlations on specified correlated orbitals are treated using a Hartree-Fock approximation. Differences between using charge-only or spin-density-dependent exchange-co…
The reliable {\it ab-initio} description of strongly correlated materials is a long-sought capability in condensed matter physics. The $GW$+EDMFT method is a promising scheme, which provides a self-consistent description of correlations and screening, and does not require user-provided parameters. In order to test the reliability of this approach we apply it to the experimentally well characterized perovskite compound Ca$_2$RuO$_4$, in which a temperature-dependent structural deformation drives a paramagnetic metal-insulator transition. Our results demonstrate that the nonlocal polarization an…
We characterize experimentally and theoretically the high-energy dielectric screening properties of the prototypical correlated metal SrVO$_3$. The dynamical structure factor measured by inelastic x-ray scattering spectroscopy as a function of momentum transfer is in very good agreement with first-principles calculations in the adiabatic local density approximation to time-dependent density-functional theory. Our results reveal the crucial importance of crystal local fields in the charge response function of correlated materials: They lead to depolarization effects for localised excitations an…
We present an ab initio based method which gives clear insight into the interplay between the hybridization, the coulomb exchange, and the crystal-field interactions, as the degree of 4f localization is varied across a series of strongly correlated cerium systems. The results for the ordered magnetic moments, magnetic structure, and ordering temperatures are in excellent agreement with experiment, including the occurence of a moment collapse of non-Kondo origin. In contrast, standard ab initio density functional calculations fail to predict, even qualitatively, the trend of the unusual magenti…
Realistic electronic-structure calculations for correlated Mott insulators are notoriously hard. Here we present an ab initio multiconfiguration scheme that adequately describes strong correlation effects involving Cu 3d and O 2p electrons in layered cuprates. In particular, the O 2p states giving rise to the Zhang-Rice band are explicitly considered. Renormalization effects due to nonlocal spin interactions are also treated consistently. We show that the dispersion of the lowest band observed in photoemission is reproduced with quantitative accuracy. Additionally, the evolution of the Fermi s…
We discuss a general approach to a realistic theory of the electronic structure in materials containing correlated d- or f- electrons. The main feature of this approach is the taking into account the energy dependence of the electron self-energy with the momentum dependence being neglected (local approximation). In the case of strong interactions (U/W>>1 - rare-earth system) the Hubbard-I approach is the most suitable. Starting from an exact atomic Green function with the constrained density matrix the band structure problem is formulated as the functional problem on Nmm' for f-electrons and t…
In existing theoretical approaches to core-level excitations of transition-metal ions in solids relaxation and polarization effects due to the inner core hole are often ignored or described phenomenologically. Here we set up an ab initio computational scheme that explicitly accounts for such physics in the calculation of x-ray absorption and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra. Good agreement is found with experimental transition-metal $L$-edge data for the strongly correlated $d^9$ cuprate Li$_2$CuO$_2$, for which we determine the absolute scattering intensities. The newly developed m…
We show that the physical subspace in the Z2-slave-spin theory is conserved under the time evolution of the system. Thus, when restricted to the physical subspace, this representation gives a complete and consistent description of the original problem. In addition, we review two known examples from the existing literature in which the projection onto the physical subspace can be relaxed: (i) the non-interacting limit in any dimension at half filling and (ii) the interacting model in the infinite dimensional limit at half filling. In both cases, physical observables are correctly obtained witho…
We used quantum chemical ab initio methods to determine the effective parameters of Hubbard and $t-J$ models for the $\rm Na_{x}CoO_2$ compounds (x=0 and 0.5). As for the superconducting compound we found the $a_{1g}$ cobalt orbitals above the $e_g^\prime$ ones by a few hundreds of meV due to the $e_g^\prime$--$e_g$ hybridization of the cobalt $3d$ orbitals. The correlation strength was found to increase with the sodium content $x$ while the in-plane AFM coupling decreases. The less correlated system was found to be the pure $CoO_2$, however it is still strongly correlated and very close to th…
Ab-initio relativistic dynamical mean-field theory is applied to resolve the long-standing controversy between theory and experiment in the "simple" face-centered cubic phase of plutonium called delta-Pu. In agreement with experiment, neither static nor dynamical magnetic moments are predicted. In addition, the quasiparticle density of states reproduces not only the peak close to the Fermi level, which explains the large coefficient of electronic specific heat, but also main 5f features observed in photoelectron spectroscopy.
Recent progress of quantum simulators provides insight into the fundamental problems of strongly correlated systems. To adequately assess the accuracy of these simulators, the precise modeling of the many-body physics, with accurate model parameters, is crucially important. In this paper, we introduce an \emph{ab intio} exact diagonalization framework to compute the correlated physics of a few electrons in artificial potentials. We apply this approach to a quantum-dot system and study the magnetism of the correlated electrons, obtaining good agreement with recent experimental measurements. Thr…
Recent trends of ab initio studies and progress in methodologies for electronic structure calculations of strongly correlated electron systems are discussed. The interest for developing efficient methods is motivated by recent discoveries and characterizations of strongly correlated electron materials and by requirements for understanding mechanisms of intriguing phenomena beyond a single-particle picture. A three-stage scheme is developed as renormalized multi-scale solvers (RMS) utilizing the hierarchical electronic structure in the energy space. It provides us with an ab initio downfolding …

In this paper I give a detailed account of an ab initio methodology for describing strong electronic correlations in nanoscale devices hosting transition metal atoms with open $d$- or $f$-shells. The method combines Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory for treating the weakly interacting electrons on a static mean-field level with non-perturbative many-body methods for the strongly interacting electrons in the open $d$- and $f$-shells. An effective description of the strongly interacting electrons in terms of a multi-orbital Anderson impurity model is obtained by projection onto the strongly co…
An interacting lattice model describing the subspace spanned by a set of strongly-correlated bands is rigorously coupled to density functional theory to enable ab initio calculations of geometric and topological material properties. The strongly-correlated subspace is identified from the occupation number band structure as opposed to a mean-field energy band structure. The self-consistent solution of the many-body model Hamiltonian and a generalized Kohn-Sham equation exactly incorporates momentum-dependent and crystal-symmetric correlations into electronic structure calculations in a way that…
The consequences of dynamical screening of Coulomb interaction among correlated electrons in realistic materials have not been widely considered before. In this letter we try to incorporate a frequency dependent Coulomb interaction into the state-of-the-art ab initio electronic structure computing framework of local density approximation plus dynamical mean-field theory, and then choose SrVO3 as a prototype material to demonstrate the importance of dynamical screening effect. It is shown to renormalise the spectral weight near the Fermi level, to increase the effective mass, and to suppress th…
Ab initio calculation of the electronic properties of materials is a major challenge for solid state theory. Whereas the experience of forty years has proven density functional theory (DFT) in a suitable, e.g. local approximation (LDA) to give a satisfactory description in case electronic correlations are weak, materials with strongly correlated, say d- or f-electrons remain a challenge. Such materials often exhibit colossal responses to small changes of external parameters such as pressure, temperature, and magnetic field, and are therefore most interesting for technical applications. Encoura…
We propose silver-based oxides with layered perovskite structure as candidates of exhibiting intriguing feature of strongly correlated electrons. The compounds show unique covalence between Ag d and O p orbitals with the strong electron correlation of their antibonding orbital similar to the copper oxide high-temperature superconductors, but stronger covalency and slightly smaller correlation strength. We examine $A_2$AgO$_2X_2$ with $A$ =Sr and Ba and $X$ =F, I and Cl in detail. Among them, Sr$_2$AgO$_2$F$_2$ has the largest effective onsite Coulomb repulsion and shows an antiferromagnetic in…
We introduce an approach to treat localized correlated electronic states in the otherwise weakly correlated host medium. Here, the environment is dynamically downfolded on the correlated subspace. It is captured via renormalization of one and two quasiparticle interaction terms which are evaluated using many-body perturbation theory. We outline the strategy on how to take the dynamical effects into account by going beyond the static limit approximation. Further, we introduce an efficient stochastic implementation that enables treating the host environment with a large number of electrons at a …
We propose a streamlined combination scheme of the transcorrelation (TC) and coupled cluster (CC) theory, which not only increases the convergence rate with respect to the basis set, but also extends the applicability of the lowest order CC approximations to strongly correlated regimes in the three dimensional uniform electron gas (3D UEG). With the correct physical insights built into the correlator used in TC, highly accurate ground state energies with errors $\leq 0.001 $ a.u./electron relative to the state-of-the-art quantum Monte Carlo results can be obtained across a wide range of densit…
Ab initio determination of model Hamiltonian parameters for strongly correlated materials is a key issue in applying many-particle theoretical tools to real narrow-band materials. We propose a self-contained calculation scheme to construct, with an ab initio approach, and solve such a Hamiltonian. The scheme uses a Wannier-function-basis set, with the Coulomb interaction parameter U obtained specifically for these Wannier functions via constrained Density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The Hamiltonian is solved by Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT) with the effective impurity problem tr…
While the traditional local-density approximation (LDA) cannot describe Mott insulators, {\it ab-initio} determination of the Hubbard $U$, for example, limits LDA-plus dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) approaches. Here, we attempt to overcome these bottlenecks by achieving fusion of the quantum chemistry (QC) approach with DMFT. QC+DMFT supplants the LDA bandstructure by its QC counterpart as an input to DMFT. Using QC+DMFT, we show that undoped $La_{2}CuO_{4}$ is a $d$-Mott insulator, and qualitatively discuss the circulating current- and incoherent metal phase, at small but finite hole dopi…

In this work, a simple and fundamental numeric scheme dubbed as ab-initio optimization principle (AOP) is proposed for the ground states of translational invariant strongly-correlated quantum lattice models. The idea is to transform a nondeterministic-polynomial-hard ground state simulation with infinite degrees of freedom into a single optimization problem of a local function with finite number of physical and ancillary degrees of freedom. This work contributes mainly in the following aspects: 1) AOP provides a simple and efficient scheme to simulate the ground state by solving a local optimi…
We used fully correlated ab initio calculations to determine the effective parameters of Hubbard and t - J models for the thermoelectric misfit compound $\rm Ca_3Co_4O_9$. As for the $\rm Na_xCoO_2$ family the Fermi level orbitals are the $a_{1g}$ orbitals of the cobalt atoms ; the $e'_g$ being always lower in energy by more than 240\,meV. The electron correlation is found very large $U/t\sim 26$ as well as the parameters fluctuations as a function of the structural modulation. The main consequences are a partial $a_{1g}$ electrons localization and a fluctuation of the in-plane magnetic exchan…
We introduce a novel computational approach for the investigation of complex correlated electron materials which makes it possible to evaluate interatomic forces and thereby determine atomic displacements and structural transformations induced by electronic correlations. It combines \textit{ab initio} band structure and dynamical mean-field theory and is implemented with the linear-response formalism regarding atomic displacements. We apply this new technique to explore structural transitions of prototypical correlated systems such as elemental hydrogen, SrVO$_3$, and KCuF$_3$.
We formulate an ab initio downfolding scheme for electron-phonon coupled systems. In this scheme, we calculate partially renormalized phonon frequencies and electron-phonon coupling, which include the screening effects of high-energy electrons, to construct a realistic Hamiltonian consisting of low-energy electron and phonon degrees of freedom. We show that our scheme, which we call constrained density-functional perturbation theory (cDFPT), can be implemented by slightly modifying the conventional DFPT, which is one of the standard methods to calculate phonon properties from first principles.…
The quantitative description of correlated electron materials remains a modern computational challenge. We demonstrate a numerical strategy to simulate correlated materials at the fully ab initio level beyond the solution of effective low-energy models, and apply it to gain a detailed microscopic understanding across a family of cuprate superconducting materials in their parent undoped states. We uncover microscopic trends in the electron correlations and reveal the link between the material composition and magnetic energy scales via a many-body picture of excitation processes involving the bu…
The present paper reviews recent achievements on the ab initio determination of effective model Hamiltonians aimed at the description of strongly correlated materials. These models (Heisenberg, $t-J$, extended Hubbard, Kondo, etc) are crucial to solid state physicists for the description and understanding of the electronic remarkable properties such as magnetic orders, photo-induced magnetism, transport properties, high $t\_c$ super conductivity, etc. We will see how the association and the control of embedding techniques, fragment spectroscopy, effective or intermediate Hamiltonian theories, …
Efficient ab initio calculations of correlated materials at finite temperature require compact representations of the Green's functions both in imaginary time and Matsubara frequency. In this paper, we introduce a general procedure which generates sparse sampling points in time and frequency from compact orthogonal basis representations, such as Chebyshev polynomials and intermediate representation (IR) basis functions. These sampling points accurately resolve the information contained in the Green's function, and efficient transforms between different representations are formulated with minim…
We present a detailed discussion of both theoretical and experimental evidence in favour of the existence of states of ``confined coherence'' in metals of sufficiently high anisotropy and with sufficiently strong correlations. The defining property of such a state is that single electron coherence is confined to lower dimensional subspaces (planes or chains) so that it is impossible to observe interference effects between histories which involve electrons moving between these subspaces. The most dramatic experimental manifestation of such a state is the coexistence of incoherent, non-metallic …
The discovery of superconductivity in hole-doped infinite-layer NdNiO$_2$ -- a transition metal (TM) oxide that is both isostructural and isoelectronic to cuprate superconductors -- has lead to renewed enthusiasm in the hope of understanding the origin of unconventional superconductivity. Here, we investigate the electron-removal states in infinite-layered Ni$^{1+}$ oxide, NdNiO$_2$, which mimics hole-doping, with the state-of-the-art many-body multireference quantum chemistry methods. From the analysis of the many-body wavefunction, we find that the hole-doped $d^8$ ground state of NdNiO$_2$ …
